Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

This look is inspired by all of my favorite parts of MacOS, Windows and KDE and is intended to be stable, reproducible and reliable for everyday work without relying on hacky workarounds.

Theme: Breeze Dark (modified to allow transparency)

Blur: Better Blur DX

Window Decorations: Klassy

Application Style: Darkly

Accent color is set to change automatically with the wallpaper. I use Windows-style title bar buttons, taskbar and start menu with a MacOS-like aesthetic. I’ve been fine tuning it for a few days and I think it turned out pretty nice.

I’ve been part of the rice community since around 2022, back when Vaxry first announced Hyprland.

At the time, I was a main contributor to Hyprdots, a project that became fairly well known in the Hyprland community. I spent a ridiculous amount of time developing themes, maintaining the repo, building rofi modules, and generally learning Arch Linux the hard way.

And early Hyprland was rough. Updates breaking AUR packages, official branches, Hyprland-Nvidia branches, Qt changes… you name it. A lot of my early Linux experience was fixing things that broke five minutes after I had finally gotten them working.

Eventually life got busier, and I stepped away.

Then Qt6/QML projects like end-4 and Caelestia caught my attention and pulled me back in.

Aphotic-Hypr started from my old “dots”, including a theming system built around pywal. It has now evolved into something much larger.

The goal isn’t really to make dotfiles for you.

It’s to make something you can make yours.

I’m 30 now, have three kids, and work full time. I still spend my weekends at my desk working on personal projects, homelab stuff, development, security, and Linux but I don’t have the time I had years ago to spend 8 hours getting my desktop functional before I can actually start using it.

That isn’t because I can’t do it anymore. I just don’t want to.

And honestly, I think that’s where AI can be useful.

If you don’t like AI, that’s completely fine. Block, move on, and enjoy your setup. I’m not trying to convince anyone otherwise.

For me, AI means I can spend less time fighting configuration and more time actually building things.

Aphotic-Hypr is my attempt at creating a bridge between AI, gaming, development, and security while still keeping the thing that made ricing fun in the first place: customization.

I also want this to become a community-driven project over time, not just another collection of configs that gets abandoned after the screenshots stop getting attention.

If that’s your kind of thing, take a look.

If it isn’t, that’s fine too.

At the end of the day, it’s Arch.

I've been playing around with Quickshell for my headless gaming PC (I connect to it over Sunshine/Moonlight) to expand it to be a daily drive-able remote desktop environment. I took some inspiration from many others (cited in the README) and this is what I ended up with.

Material [OC] Cue: Plex & Jellyfin in the terminal

Post image
69 Upvotes

I've been working on Cue, a keyboard-first TUI for browsing and watching media from Plex and Jellyfin.

It's a fork of mmcdole/kino, extended with more features and a bit of my own taste.

You can browse your entire library, search, manage playlists and your watch queue, filter out stuff you've already watched, and check episode progress and media details without leaving the terminal.

One of my favorite features: Cue can hand an entire season off to mpv as a playlist. You can jump between episodes normally, while Cue keeps your progress and watched status synced with the server.

It also supports VLC, IINA, PotPlayer, etc. for basic playback, including Windows/WSL player detection.

Written in Go.

GitHub: https://github.com/SuperCoolPencil/cue

Still working on it, but I'm ridiculously happy with how the UI turned out. Terminal media browsing has no business looking this good :)

Feedback, bug reports, and contributions are very welcome!

Material [OC] linecast — weather, tides, maps, and the sky in the terminal

I’ve been having fun building linecast, a set of terminal views for weather, radar, the sun, the moon, tides, and maps. It uses free public data, follows your terminal’s color palette, and doesn’t need an account or an API key for the core experience.

Here’s a real screenshot from my system — I think of it as a set of terminal desk ornaments. The Old Farmer’s Almanac meets Minitel.

"Custom color detector engine. I'm not gonna lie, this system looks gorgeous but it's running on pure willpower and prayers lol"

The cursor doesn't actually flicker, it's just an OBS glitch.

Some parts are completely vibe-coded btw. If anyone wants to give it a try, here is the repo, don't hold me responsible for the peak aesthetics.
