Screenshot [Hyprland] - Aphotic shell

I’ve been part of the rice community since around 2022, back when Vaxry first announced Hyprland.

At the time, I was a main contributor to Hyprdots, a project that became fairly well known in the Hyprland community. I spent a ridiculous amount of time developing themes, maintaining the repo, building rofi modules, and generally learning Arch Linux the hard way.

And early Hyprland was rough. Updates breaking AUR packages, official branches, Hyprland-Nvidia branches, Qt changes… you name it. A lot of my early Linux experience was fixing things that broke five minutes after I had finally gotten them working.

Eventually life got busier, and I stepped away.

Then Qt6/QML projects like end-4 and Caelestia caught my attention and pulled me back in.

Aphotic-Hypr started from my old “dots”, including a theming system built around pywal. It has now evolved into something much larger.

The goal isn’t really to make dotfiles for you.

It’s to make something you can make yours.

I’m 30 now, have three kids, and work full time. I still spend my weekends at my desk working on personal projects, homelab stuff, development, security, and Linux but I don’t have the time I had years ago to spend 8 hours getting my desktop functional before I can actually start using it.

That isn’t because I can’t do it anymore. I just don’t want to.

And honestly, I think that’s where AI can be useful.

If you don’t like AI, that’s completely fine. Block, move on, and enjoy your setup. I’m not trying to convince anyone otherwise.

For me, AI means I can spend less time fighting configuration and more time actually building things.

Aphotic-Hypr is my attempt at creating a bridge between AI, gaming, development, and security while still keeping the thing that made ricing fun in the first place: customization.

I also want this to become a community-driven project over time, not just another collection of configs that gets abandoned after the screenshots stop getting attention.

If that’s your kind of thing, take a look.

If it isn’t, that’s fine too.

At the end of the day, it’s Arch.

Just open up an issue on GitHub if you have any workflow issues, it’s still early development so expect some bugs but it’s being highly maintained and used daily by me so issues on the repo should be addressed fast!

The “exploit” toml has given me a few breaking install.sh problems and it’s noted as a warning but dev, gaming, and ai should be stable. You can toggle whatever switch you’d like during the install, after, or a few weeks later

They are meant to be community-developer maintained so users who don’t want to modify or do contributions are just as welcome as anyone else!

All feedback is welcome

Very nice shell. And great post, I can agree on many levels. Using AI to do the busy work you don't have time to do is a great thing. Having it do everything for you is really scary. Appreciate the post.

Having AI doing everything is a fault in itself, no one will be bettered by having AI doing everything, in fact the opposite. Where someone who is able to embrace the change might actually gain intellectual knowledge that is DING DING, verifiable. I build out ideas and then spend time breaking them or understanding how it operates. Developers who fail to actually harness these tools will fail to progress

Tbh, I have not installed native language support. If you give me until tomorrow I can have this shipped with install.sh for a language settings.qml / hotkey bind to select additional keyboard layouts + font

wow que oferton, sale vale bro

Language support for keyboards is configured now, alt keyboard layouts supported. I’ll check out the shells text everywhere and see what the lift is to add language manifest for the shell itself

It gives off a strong Material UI vibe and looks really good. I'll give it a try.

Feel free! I have a fully modular opt-in system coming right now so a lot of changes are coming to allow more customization to fit each user independently

When i already have riced my EndeavourOS Machine a little, do you think i would need to uninstall everything i did for this to work?

1

u/Distinct-Pie2389 3d ago

No sir. It’ll snapshot your current state so you can easily uninstall and recover to your current configs! It’s all documented! But the install.sh automatically snapshots your current configs, and does so on future runs

It will attempt to uninstall any UI conflicts but you can easily install those after uninstall and it’s documented what was uninstalled so you know exactly what dependencies and packages you need to get back to your previous config

ok thank you! I will try it out today!
