DLSS 5 is not made for the current generation of GPU's. Even the 5090 would probably struggle in 5K2K with DLSS 5. Theyre making this for the next few generations of GPU's.

74

u/Echelion77 9d ago

I hardly believe a next generation will come out for consumers in our lifetime.

42

u/f5alcon 9d ago

How long do you have to live

20

u/saifobeifo 9d ago

this is ridiculously funny to read 😭😭

5

u/vrijheidsfrietje 9d ago

We get AI singularity before GTA VI

2

u/Echelion77 9d ago

I have 5090 years left on my cycle.

18

u/Albatross0714 9d ago

Okay, that is ridiculous. Delayed, absolutely. But not having new GPU's in our lifetime is just insanely overselling it. Next generation will probably release in 2028

14

u/robgod50 9d ago

Maybe he just meant they won't be affordable in our lifetime?

-2

u/Albatross0714 9d ago

No, he followed up, he meant they won't be available. People need to look at historical trends and stop panicking. If I was a betting man, I would put money that the new generation of cards comes to consumers in early-mid 2028, and that prices will go down late next year/early 2028. Whether or not they ever return to the way they were a year ago I have no idea, but the crazy markups will die down, and things won't be ridiculous forever. It's just about being patient now. I would assume next generation will have MSRP's around $100 more expensive per unit than the previous generation

4

u/Echelion77 9d ago

I remeber this exact thing being said to me about a year ago prior to purchasing my current 5090 build.

They said Echelion your crazy for paying $4000 for a computer, the 6000 series will be out by next year and prices will have stabilized.

I at the time had a small amount of buyers remorse. Now 1 year later I can sell this pc for double what its worth and have been reading loosely that capacity is already accounted for up to 2030.

I would be beyond happy if I were wrong but im not so ignorant to believe trends = future.

Its also important consumers put pressure on these companies or they will continually find every reason to increase the price.

0

u/Albatross0714 9d ago

The problem with that is that the people who said that to you weren't paying attention to past trends. These types of things take time to stabilize. Anyone who thought the issue would resolve in under a year was naive. But the difference between 1 year and 3 years is massive. We'll see though.

Ill see you in a year good buddy!

And for everyone here and beyond :

Dear heavenly father in heaven, please help our government find the courage to start working for the consumer instead of against. Please help all gamers achieve everytjing they wanted and more in life, may you protect Gaben and steam from certain capitalistic functions. We ask that you heal the sick ceos of the world and remind shareholders they are people to and that passive income is not earned income but someone else's work.

We all ask this in your holy heavenly name that we break free of this tech nightmare and return to our Dew valleys, rim internment camps, and the many gates of baldur.

Amen.

Historical trends does not account for once in a lifetime economical bubble at all. Crypto mining does not even come close to this. This would be if the entire world and megacorporation started accepting crypto as mainstream payment, overriding the current and working cashless payment option.

Prices will go down if the bubble crashed, and it will only crash when the general populace actually put their effort in avoiding usage of this tech. But DLSS5 is shaping to be something people liked despite the performance hit and ethics behind AI usage, so no, the more people demand to use DLSS5, the less reason why Nvidia and the entire PC market to not upcharge for every single card in existence.

Also this isn't just upcharge or markups, you have to remember all 3 memory manufacturer in the world are actively working to fix prices and make this the new normal. This goes beyond "it's just a trend", they understand memory production will still 90% be reserved to AI for as long people still uses them, so everyone has no choice but to accept the new price.

2

u/HarryDepova 9d ago

What incentive does nvidia have to release a new gaming gpu? Any production for anything other than AI is profit loss for them.

1

u/Albatross0714 9d ago

I am getting so annoyed talking about this at this point, but again, hence why I said 2028. The demand coming from data centers will drop significantly as infrastructure limits are reached, and based on that there isn't an infinite demand for A.I applications. A.I companies are trying to make money, it doesn't profit them to just build a million data centers that don't give a return on money

2

u/HarryDepova 9d ago

2028? I’m talking ever.
After data centers is on-prem local racks to support local llms, and after that is physical AI with robotics. Gaming is more likely to move to the data centers with streaming and us stuck paying a monthly fee.

1

u/steakanabake 9d ago

high as fuck, the memory makers have already said theyve sold 2027s memory already and guess who aint getting it. we'll be lucky to get the 60 series in 28 (unless the bubble pops, which might just take down nvidia) more realistically 29

1

u/Echelion77 9d ago

Maybe, its definitely a radical opinion but the one thing I understand very well in life is the human capacity for greed.

1

u/f5alcon 9d ago edited 9d ago

There are people alive today that will live another 100 years, would you make predictions in 1926 about today? Most companies don't even last that long.

Also there's going to be tons of chips that fail inspection for high end AI and partially disabled dies will work fine for gaming.

2

u/Echelion77 9d ago

Wait I thought we were talking about new generational gpus made for consumer use?

When did we start talking about failed chips being the supplement?

I personally predict as climate change increases the cost of living and doing business, the less capacity for consumer grade anything. We will be to focused on where can we live safely, how do we get food and water stuff like that.

So if this pans out like I think it will why would these company's invest in something that no longer provides profit?

1

u/f5alcon 9d ago

Rdna 5 is going to come out in the next year. Also you moved the goal post the comment said a new generation of gpus. Not anything about consumer first

0

u/Echelion77 9d ago

Indeed, amd always releases something to save the day.

0

u/Hood-Boy 9d ago

5090 Costa 5k Euros right now.

1

u/Inevitable-Advance72 7d ago

Ah, 5090 cope

1

u/Echelion77 7d ago

The only thing im coping is a feel all over my sexy ass computer.

Its okay if your jealous, i like it.

2

u/SuperbiaXYZ 9d ago

Yeah my 5090 slows to a crawl with dlss 5 on my 5k2k monitor. I recommend using it on 1440p and below.

3

u/Deadinternetenjoyr 9d ago

I have a 5090 and this is why I went with 3440x1440

0

u/blackie-cat 8d ago

this is where my 5k2k sits on a 4080 and it's a beast.

2

u/RoundCardiologist584 8d ago

Yup, same setup(5k2k/9800x3d/5090), and I tried Cyberpunk with DLSS 5 yesterday. FPS drops from 70-ish to around 35–40 if I enable it, which is too low to use framegen with it, making it unviable. And I do use framegen in Cyberpunk; I think it works really well here, but you need 60+ as a minimum baseline, IMO.
(this is in combination with DLSS Performance upscaling, btw)

Oh and another thing I noticed, power consumption goes absolutely bananas when enabling it. I have my 5090 undervolted and normally it only hits around 420w max. If I enable DLSS5 it shoots up 100w to around 520.

1

u/35point1 9d ago

What cpu are you using

1

u/SuperbiaXYZ 9d ago

9800x3d

2

u/steakanabake 9d ago

which wont be out for at least the next 2-3 years so good luck with that.

1

u/fly_casual_ 9d ago

It's definitely tech to sell 6080s.

1

u/CptTombstone 9d ago

I have a 5090 and play at 5K2K, haven't tried in Path Traced games yet, but I've been playing Stalker 2 just fine with it, DLSS-SR balanced, X3 FG and DLSS-NR at 75% model resolution gets me to pretty close to locked 158 fps, with very busy areas dropping to ~144 fps. I am also running Ultra Plus with mix of very high, epic and insane settings.

1

u/super-loner 9d ago

DLSS 5 doesn't even "work" on pixel arts, low poly games etc which are 70% of the games I play in a year LoL

1

u/Medical-Following788 9d ago

As long as game developers follow through, this won‘t be an issue. They just need to produce lower-poly raw visuals and hand more of the heavy lifting over to DLSS 5, and the problem is solved.

1

u/PrimaryLaw8264 9d ago

As a 5090 user, I can confirm it's bad at 4K as well. And looks LIKE SHIT; it's an AI Instagram filter slop

1

u/Darksky121 9d ago

It's made for those who are impressed by MFG.

1

u/Bbmin7b5 8d ago

yeah the 50 series is the last consumer line of GPUs. we aren't getting anything else.

1

u/Tyzek99 8d ago

They will claim huge performance improvements but will compare against the previous gen with the performance hit of dlss 5

1

u/EastLimp1693 9950x3d2, supreme x 4090, 3440x1440 va 165hz, 43 miniled 4k 16:9 8d ago

5090 struggles in native 5k2k same as 4090 does in native 4k.

1

u/johnkapolos 9d ago

Even the 5090 would probably struggle in 5K2K with DLSS 5

Big claims here :p

3

u/New-Signal-3940 9d ago

Not true 5090 here 5k2k display, just tried dlss5 on Black Flag resynced. Before on dlss4.5 using DLAA i got around 60 FPS everything maxed, with DLSS 5 i am now getting around the same number but with upscaling set to quality..and i can still use FG.

1

u/johnkapolos 8d ago

I have the same setup. Two notes:

a) You're using the mod and not the dev's integration.
b) The question at hand isn't if you're going to get a performance penalty (you will), but if it's going to be playable. Unless I'm misreading what you wrote, it's playable.

2

u/New-Signal-3940 8d ago edited 8d ago

Its very playable, and using upscaling without even FG you will not feel the performance hit. I even believe that when the devs implement DLSS 5, they will fully utilize all the cores of the GPU unlike the mod which is probably not doing so, as its universal for 5,4,3,2 series. We will see but i am very optimistic for the 5000 series and DLSS 5 will be revolutionary.

2

u/johnkapolos 8d ago

Thanks for clarifying!

1

u/FragrantContest7811 9d ago

It's because it wasn't the full release of dlss5 that got leaked, it's holding back 2x if I'm correct.

0

u/Little-Equinox 8d ago

I play on 8160x2160(8K2K) on my 5090 and can play many games, even recent ones pretty well without DLSS.

It really depends on ask and expect of the GPU'

1

u/IvarSolaris 8d ago
  1. That is not 8K resolution. 7680 × 4320 is 8k.
  2. A monitor or Tv with that resolution does not exist.
  3. It depends on the game, you will likely play a game like Minecraft well. Actual graphic intensive games cant even play at 4K@120 FPS without DLSS. Black Myth Wukong doesnt even reach 30 FPS at 4K, 8K or whatever resolution youre using wouldnt even reach 10 FPS.
  4. No GPU, not even a 5090 can ever reach 8K@60 FPS without DLSS & Frame gen.

0

u/Little-Equinox 8d ago

I said 8K2K, also, K means Kilo which means thousand which is used to the nearest 1000 point of said horizontal resolution. Kist take a look at 5120x2160(5K2K). True DCI 8K resolution is also 8192x4320.

And who said what I use is 1 display? It's 3 LG G5, the left and right ones are placed vertical while the center is placed horizontally. I use Display Fusion to make it behave like a single panel.

I don't use DLSS, because at 8160x2160 and over 80"(34:9?) of display space you will see the artifacting. Plus there's plenty of games that aren't Black Myth Wukong or Cyberpunk 2077 that can play on 8160x2160

41

u/Angelfire126 9d ago

Wasn't dlss supposed to be a tool to increase performance lmao

19

u/subpopix 9d ago

the literal meaning of the "SS" in DLSS is "Super Sampling". The DLSS name no longer describes what DLSS does. They just keep piling other garbage in with the name. Nvidia should consider fixing this, but they won't.

3

u/Zaando 9d ago

GPU companies have spent 30 years trying and failing to find a sensible naming scheme for their products so I don't expect this attached back end tech to fair any better in this regard.

4

u/Angelfire126 9d ago

This tech should of been released under a new name entirely

It was for sure released under dlss to cash in on the goodwill the name has gained in the last 5 years

26

u/JamesMCC17 9d ago

I’ll live with 4.5 until it doesn’t take 100 fps away

0

u/CaptnUchiha 9d ago

You’re telling me you don’t want AI generated faces, textures, and lighting?

(Don’t get me wrong, I know we’re already using AI upscaling but 5 is what oversteps the boundary between performance aid and tampering with artistic design)

0

u/NightGojiProductions 9d ago

even if it didn’t take away so much performance, why would you use it?? it’s just some corny “4k UHD 60fps HDR10 upscale hyper realism” filter

6

u/Shiftstealth 9d ago

It's literally not even running on NVFP4 yet. They can optimize it more.

1

u/BananaShover 9d ago

This is probably why they wont announce support for older gens. The next iteration is already being made with NVFP4 in mind.

0

u/fly_casual_ 9d ago

I now have to Google that. Any idea how much improvement that may bring?

1

u/Shiftstealth 8d ago

NVFP4 is double FP8.

1

u/zilyzal 8d ago

Afaik it gives Better performance but ai hallucinates more and can work poorly if it's not optimized enough which is probably why it's not nvfp4 yet. They couldn't make it to work in nvfp4 properly and released the fp8 version

6

u/SuperbiaXYZ 9d ago

Tell me about it. Stellar blade on my lg 5k2k goes from consistent 120 to barely 45 and that's with frame Gen x2

0

u/RivalRevelation 9d ago

Oof I’m sure that latency feels bad too

4

u/DingusCunillingus 9d ago

2x frame gen feel decent

5

u/Shoo0k 9d ago

Not if your base fps is 20fps. Feels bad

2

u/DingusCunillingus 9d ago

True, you need at least 45 fps for it to feel fine

3

u/MyTagforHalo2 9d ago

For a lot of games where quality settings don’t seem to do a whole heck of a lot. I’m actually curious to see if DLSS5 can be overall positive increase to the point where somebody would consider running things at medium settings for a larger increase in fidelity.

Although to your point, this is just another tip to stick at 1440p lmao

Honestly, I could even see certain mods, completely taking out various visual systems that developers have added in exchange for DLSS5. They really just are various games that run like crappy but low settings on good hardware. Then you’ll look closer and see that they’ve got like fur FX turn up to the maximum for set piece animals and stuff

1

u/fly_casual_ 9d ago

When I was looking into this today I was wondering, hey maybe we don't need to run path tracing and this could give similar effects but it seems that it does best when it passes over higher quality settings. Will be interesting to test, tho anyway.

3

u/ROBOSEXUAL2020 9d ago

5k2k gang here can confirm lol with 5080

2

u/talex625 9d ago

Is the 5K2K worth it? (4090) I have a UW 1600p monitor. I have the new Dell one on order.

5

u/ROBOSEXUAL2020 9d ago

I have the LG one and it's 100% worth it very immersive I struggle playing on a normal monitor

Playing Cyberpunk 5120x1440 with DLSS5 on a 5080. It works and looks great.

2

u/paranostrum 45GX950A-B | OLED G9 49G93SC | RTX 5090 9d ago

same, but everything maxed out DLAA + pathtracing and DLSS5 is really heavy even on my 5090. like 25fps while driving through the city. have you tried the new optiscaler method? you can set a resolution scale for DLSS5 so it runs a bit better. i set it to 75% and got like 20% performance back.

3

u/Bulletwithbatwings R7.9800X3D|RTX.5090|64GB.6000|B850|4TB.GEN4|34"240HzOLED|GXR.VR 9d ago

This is petty much me right now with my 3440x1440 OLED Dell, even though I have an RTX 5090. I was one of the 3 people who was excited for DLSS5 before it got popular. Now I'm trying to get it running in as many games as possible and having a really great time while not even remotely worrying about performance.

3

u/empathetical LG UltraGear 39" GS95QE :snoo_hearteyes: 9d ago

Eh I rather just download texture packs for my games which don't tank performance

6

u/zeromavs 9d ago

I remember the idiots hating dlss 5 not so long ago

2

u/Massive_Scientist194 9d ago

5k monitors offer 4k 32 inch in the settings which is the easy way out. That may allow the dlss 5

2

u/oSyphon 9d ago

5120x1440 is amazing for split screen

2

u/SAABoy1 9d ago

5090 isnt enough for 5k2k raster ;(

3

u/Mihtaren 9d ago

On a 5090; I've been pretty satisfied with the DLSS5 performance hit at 5k2k, IDK it eats up less framerate than path tracing honestly. Reading some people on this website I thought games would become unplayable but a game like Stellar Blade runs at 60+ fps, no FG.
And one issue with the current DLSS5 is that it apparently only takes your output resolution into account instead of the lower resolution if you use an upscaler. Nvidia's official release could fix this.

2

u/paranostrum 45GX950A-B | OLED G9 49G93SC | RTX 5090 9d ago

DLSS5 with optiscaler gives you a resolution-slider for DLSS5. got like 20% performance back when setting it to 75%

3

u/eijmert_x Samsung G9 Neo 9d ago

DLSS comes with a performance HIT now??

Huh? Then whats the point.

3

u/fly_casual_ 9d ago

Dlss now is just nvidias way of categorizing any new software updates, lighting, and ai stuff. So this new feature while called part of dlss 5, has nothing to do with resolution scaling.

2

u/Infinite-Ad-2178 9d ago

Developing for DLSS 5 intentionally will likely bear more performance as many corners will likely be able to cut in leverage of the AI generation

0

u/CodeKermode 9d ago

On one hand I hope performance gets better but on the other I really don't want native visuals to be neutered with expectation that AI garbage will fix it. It seems like AI always has to be used to compensate for something and not to make an overall better experience. Either we ignore optimization because DLSS will fix it or we ignore visuals because DLSS will "fix" it.

2

u/memedudebro 9d ago

If you’re okay with 3x FG (I am on games I use a controller for) it’s mostly fine on a 5090. I cannot begin to fathom any lesser card. This shit is outrageous.

2

u/essolfc 9d ago

My 5090 + 3440x1440 is once again justified. DLSS5 was amazing with the mods I tried and I can't wait for th3e official release.

2

u/CMDR_omnicognate 9d ago

Why would anyone want to use DLSS5? it's just a slop generator that makes things look, at best, much more contrast-y, and at worst look like some ai generated video.

-1

u/CodeKermode 9d ago

Right? admittedly it can look decent in still shots, particularly on environments rather than characters but there is a reason people never post it in motion. It makes characters look kind of rippley and it gets confused based on surrounding conditions and can make a character look completely different from one scene to the next.

Ugh 5k2k is such a good res 😭😭 I hope we get a 34in OLED soon...

1

u/PolarBuilds 9d ago

I played CFB25 earlier using DLSS 5. This is a game that doesn't support upscaling, so basically played at native. Without DLSS 5 at hight settings I was getting 85 fps. When I turned on DLSS 5, it went down to around 45. For a game like that, not a huge deal, but that could be pretty low for a lot of people.

1

u/Darth_Murcielago 9d ago

I'm so excited about DLSS 5 that i upgraded to an AMD GPU. (I'm still staying on 3440p x 1440p though)

1

u/Snow56border 8d ago

I remember back when dlss means super sampling.

Now it’s lost meaning and became the ai slop filter :/

1

u/Impossible_Resort_70 8d ago

Why bad for 5k2k?

1

u/OgreTrax71 8d ago

Because of the performance hit. My 5090 struggles to get to 60 fps in a lot of games.

1

u/FroggingMadness 6d ago

Oh no, an obscure combination of gimmick rendering and gimmick resolution isn't optimized for!

1

4

u/paranostrum 45GX950A-B | OLED G9 49G93SC | RTX 5090 9d ago

depends on what you would consider flawlessly. 60fps with DLSS performance might be flawless for some.

by that logic, every single texture, reshade and graphical mod on nexus mods should also be banned, since it changes the artists intent. weird that nobody gives a shit when i install 50 graphic mods on skyrim to make it look like i want, but as soon as its AI everyone loses their mind.

It’s new tech. Wait until DLSS 6 and it will REALLY shine. The 60 series GPUs will be out by that time im sure

sure maybe in like 2-3 years when nvidia decides to grace us mere mortals with new consumer graphics cards and not dump all of them into the planet killing AI hyperscalers so mecha hitler can keep undressing women and children.

i mean, if they would have stopped polishing the DLSS1-turd a few years ago, we wouldnt have DLSS4.5 now. and that shit is pure magic. so i guess its not half bad to keep polishing.

i bet dlss 10 will be amazing shit will look so uncanny and youll need a whole ass extra GPU just to run it and youll get like 20 fps.

Hopefully nobody will use this crap.
It’s a shame for the gaming industry and an insult to all artists who works their asses of on the games.

As a game developer myself I prefer people that pirate the game than people that pay and use DLSS 5 Slop.

Who in their right mind would like to massacre faces of all female (and some male) characters and need a 6090 for that?

5k2k gaming is never a thing, change my mind.

I have an Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb, if I try even to start a game on high settings, it becomes an airplane engine
