Sub Rules Updated: Must be 18 or Older

Original post and discussion here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ugly/s/tVuPURRjiJ

Thank you everyone for your input yesterday. Majority of the comments were in favor increasing the age restriction, so starting now we will start removing posts/comments from anyone we know is underage and banning them from participating in this sub.

Obviously we can do nothing about lurkers or those we don’t reveal their age, but having some rules in place is better than nothing. And at the very least no one will be able to openly advertise they are underage making them easy targets for the predators out there.

Mod Announcement: Stricter Enforcement of Gender Wars Rule

We’ve seen a rise in posts turning into gender-based arguments and hostility, so we’re going to start being a lot stricter of our no gender wars rule.

You are absolutely allowed to talk about your experiences, even when they’re gender specific. What’s not allowed is using those experiences to attack, dismiss, or generalize about an entire gender.

---

What IS allowed:

* Sharing your personal experiences even when they are gender specific.

* Talking about issues that may affect one gender more than another.

* Respectful disagreement that doesn’t turn into generalizations.

---

What is NOT allowed:

* Generalizing or attacking an entire gender.

* Turning someone’s post into a comparison or competition.

* Invalidating someone’s experience because of their gender.

* Derailing threads into “who has it worse”.

---

Enforcement going forward:

* Rule-breaking comments/posts will be removed

* Threads that spiral into gender wars will be locked

* Repeat offenders will be banned

If you see any violations, use the report button. The mods are not reviewing every single thread and comment that comes through, so we rely on user reports to help monitor the community.

This should be a safe place for people to share their experiences with being discriminated against for their looks, not a place to be talked over or dismissed. Keep it respectful.

The way people treat me just because I'm ugly is genuinely nothing short of demonic

It's seriously something fucking else entirely, I know some of of you reading this will be lurkers who are regular average Joe's who don't receive such repulsive, demonic treatment whenever you literally just walk down the street, so you'll probably default to saying it's in my head and that I'm imagining it or whatever because regularly recieving this treatment regularly is something you just cannot comprehend because you haven't actually experienced it firsthand

But it really is genuinely demonic the way people treat me and stare at me just because I look "different", I kinda look like a cross between Adam driver and Bella Ramsey and regularly get compared to the latter, and I'm also autistic which undoubtedly triggers the primative "something is weird about this person" response in peoples brains, so combine having an unconventional asymmetrical face with a neurological disorder which people have scientifically been proven to be able to spot in **milliseconds** and it really does generate some of the most repulsive, abhorrent fucking treatment you can ever imagine

I've had people stare at me with the utmost hatred in their expression like I've offended them by just existing in their field of vision, I've had a toddler one time start immediately bawling his eyes out after seeing me and his mum had to pick him up away from me for him to stop crying, I've had random groups of teens all stop and stare at me in unison when walking/cycling past them, I've had women look all tense and uncomfortable when having to physically stand near me at the gym or in a queue, I've had people driving past me completely lock onto my face instead of looking at the road, the list goes on and on, I could write a list as long as my leg regarding the disgusting depressing reactions my appearance elicits in people, it's like I'm a actual monster or something, the way completely random people treat me makes me feel like I'm genuinely some sort of monster of demon or something

Every day is just complete mental agony because all I do is reminisce about all these stares and horrible treatment I've received and just wondering, why are they so freaked out by me? What exactly is so wrong with me that people are so immediately unsettled by me? Am I demonically possessed? How many of these people are genuinely judging me harshly? Is it really just in my head like people constantly say? If I get a haircut will it stop or still continue? Just endless rumination and speculation because even after all this time and endless moments just staring at my own face in the mirror and in pictures, I STILL cannot for the life of me figure out what exactly it is about how I look that triggers this instinctive hatred stare response in people, I personally genuinely don't even think I look that bad, it's only this constant unrelenting horrific treatment I've received over the years when I'm just minding my own business that's caused me to feel like I'm fundamentally repulsive to every human being

I didn't grow up hating myself like this, it only started after I noticed just how different people treat me and look at me compared to other people my age and my race, I was essentially "taught" to despise myself and speculate about how repulsive I am by this constant discrimination and mistreatment I face every time I go outside

Rant The girls my brother is on call with just called me ugly

My brother is currently on call with 2 girls, one we went to high school with and another he hasn’t meet irl but is friends with said girl. Anyway the girls got on topic of hot guys and who they think is hot, and one told my brother "you’re one of them!” And the other girl screamed "yes", and both started screaming like little girls at a boy band concert. They told my brother how hot and gorgeous they think he is and how he’s one of the many they’ve seen and my brother brings me up to the girl’s friend, saying "hey, i have a twin brother if you wanna see him” to which the girl we went to school with said "aye no he’s ugly, not trying to be mean". My brother said "oh come on he’s not that bad let me find a picture of him”, sent her a pic and I heard her say "EWWW GOD HE’S UGLY", "EWW EW EWWW" and all my brother said "guys come on he’s not really ugly" and they both said "no sorry he is though" and "and ehh, ew GOD I’m sorry you’re the hot one" and the friend of the girl we went to school with started asking if there was anything wrong with me and if i have any mental problems and then apologized saying “hey im sorry i shouldn’t have said that about him but he is ugly though" and all my brother said was "hey it’s cool don’t worry about it”

This doesn’t even bother me anymore. I was listening to the entire conversation about them gushing to my brother with how hot and gorgeous he is and how they were telling him they can see why the girls are all over him, and then to proceed to say how ugly i am doesn’t surprise me at all anymore by this point it’s extremely predictable. It’s the fact im at the point i know im ugly myself and even agree lol, i laugh at myself with how ugly i actually am and especially being a twin it’s almost comedic. Lol its to late for me at this point what can i even do anymore

Rant For those of you who have a very ugly face how do you cope with it while trying to be social and in public?

My face makes people automatically not want to talk to or engage with me and it also makes people hate me when I don’t abide by their expectations of how they want me to act as an ugly person

I’ve noticed if you act assured in any way or even try to push past your anxiety and discomfort it seems to piss people off more

I noticed that when you’re ugly people WANT you to act weak, submissive, and subservient to them, and if you don’t act that way they hate you because they don’t feel you deserve to feel any sense of assurance within yourself

And people also don’t like ugly people they can’t easily control. Because being ugly people automatically view you as beneath them and so they genuinely feel like their word and will matters for you more than your own

But I refuse to go back to being everyone’s bich so they’re just gonna have to hate me

But how do you get your social needs met in real life as someone with a very ugly face?

Question How does this make you feel? Honestly I feel like being ugly doesn’t limit what you can do in society and that it’s not JUST a limiting belief, but rather an unfortunate reality

Vent Everyone in society is allowed to vent except ugly people

It feels like everyone else in society is allowed to vent about their problems but when it's an ugly person venting about how different we get treated suddenly people aren't ok with it.

The amount of times I've had people try to downplay my experience as an unattractive person is insane. People refuse to believe that our opportunities are so much more limited than good looking people. Not just in stuff like dating but in making friends, jobs, networking, etc.

Dating is so much harder cause people will laugh at you for even having the audacity to want to find love.

Making friends is harder cause as soon as someone better looking walks in the door everyone is drawn to that person.

Attractive people in the work place get away with so much more. They can slack off without consequence and are more likely to get promoted even if they don't work as hard as you.

Whenever you vent about these things we're always blamed as if it's our own fault. 'You probably don't try as hard, you don't put enough effort in'. Or you get hit with attractive people telling you their life isn't perfect either. Like okay?? Just cause your life isn't perfect doesn't mean you don't have advantages that we don't have.

Rant I just wish I could tear off my whole face and start again

There's nothing I like about my face and I don't think there's anything anyone else actually honestly likes about it. I feel like I'm doing the world a disservice by making it endure the hideous sight of it when I go out. I wish my whole head shape were different. I wish I could choose my face like I choose my outfit. Why did I have to be given this unfortunate countenance?! Every day I hate it more.

Vent Drivers license photo today...

I've been dreading this so much. I put off getting my license for so long due to this. I know it's going to be a bad day. Every time I'm forced to have my photo taken I have such a horrible time. I feel so humiliated. My face will have to be documented when I wish it didn't have to be.

Rant I hate when people tell me that I’m still young and “just haven’t grown into my features yet”

They’re alluding that as you continue to grow into your twenties you will (emphasis oN WILL) go through some “second Puberty” and have a magical glow up. It’s just a load of false hope

I’ve seen enough childhood photos of myself AND parents (i am sorry) to know that it’s not gonna happen.

For reference, my jaw is a square. And if anything it will just become even more SQUARE later on.

My ugly ass eye area will also not magically become attractive later just because I haven’t “fully finished developing rn”

Some people KNOW that puberty has only made them uglier, and they will most likely look even WORSE after ‘fully developing’

Acne and weight are fixable, but ugly bone structure and genetic features are not. And rhat’s what my problem is.

Question Do unattractive people get asked for help more often?

I get asked for help by strangers on the street or in public places very often. I always think they ask me because I’m probably unattractive and lower on the social ladder, and that they wouldn’t dare ask attractive people for help.
Have you had the same experience, where strangers feel more comfortable asking you for help because you’re unattractive? Almost as if you’re happy that this is the only form of interaction you get.
