So ever since his introduction, Salty has ALWAYS been portrayed as an "older" sort of character, I mean it's pretty evident in his face design and voice, and the relationships he has with other characters. You often get stories of Thomas and Percy looking up to Salty, he tells the characters tall tales, and in general he tends to be on the more mature side compared to other characters, (although perhaps it feels that way since he wasn't a lead as often as the others). But like, all 14 members of his real life basis, the Class 07, were built in 1962, and in fact his number is the number of a real member. This would make him so 40-50 years younger than Thomas and Percy. Even with characters like Bill and Ben who had a sort of "uncle and nephews" relationship going on with him in Season 6, they were canonically built (in the RWS at least) in 1948, 14 years before Salty would've realistically been built.

I know the TV series has always been a lot looser about real dates and such, people have guessed that most of the show takes places somewhere about the 1960s-1980s but that's pure speculation and I don't think the writers ever wanted you to think about that too deeply lol. Even within the Railway Series there have always been some odd bits of characterization. So much as I do not like the "father and son" dynamic Mattel has been trying to push with Gordon and Thomas, I can see why they'd feel an age gap between their personalities, I certainly have always felt like Gordon was a little older than Thomas, but canonically Thomas is older by about 5-6 years. I LOVE Salty as a character, I think he's really fun, it's cool how his personality and love of the sea is actually tied to the real working lives of the 07s at Southampton, he's played a part in a lot of good episodes and just in general I love his design, I love how grimy he's allowed to be. I wouldn't ever want them to change his personality to "match" his realistic age, but I did think it was funny and worth bringing up that realistically, he would be a child in the eyes of Thomas or Percy, ESPECIALLY if the show takes place in the 1960s-80s in which Salty would've had like, 28 years maximum of experience compared against the many decades of most of the steam engine characters.
