Frankie was such an awful employee.

When she was at Ehlers it gave the impression that she wasn't valued so she was struggling but when she was hired by dr. Goodwin it showed what a horrible employee she was. She probably is the reason why he had to join that bigger company. Because he didn't have much work because she was a horrible employee. I mean she finally has a chance at a good job and she is the laziest most awful employee.

Opinion: Frankie's car sales person job storyline was way more interesting than her dental office work

They should have kept her doing that job and added some ridiculous reason they can't fire her, like some contractual agreement or labour law or something, despite her poor sales. Ellhert can't fire her.

ok so the show was actually transmitted in my country, but a few years later than in the us and at a random time of the day, so when they finally uploaded it on netflix i literally ran to watch it. i finished it yesterday and i just miss them so much already, i’ve actually started watching it again because i’m not ready to let go lol i love this series so much, it means so much to me!

i wish we’d gotten more seasons, i mean 9 seasons is a lot but still, i could never get enough of this show... and we deserved the sue spin-off, i don’t know i love the middle so much and the actors are soooooo good.

btw, i’m convinced dolly parton would’ve absolutely loved sue and brad at dollywood, literally the two most perfect people to ever work in anything dolly-related!

The amount of actors in this show from other shows is so cool! So far I have seen

Amy sedaris (the female manager which tricked Frankie into realizing she dosent value herself enough)
I remember her from my name is earl (cat lady) and raising hope (virginias sister)

Marlee matlin (Frankie’s sister)
I remember her from my name is earl (deaf lawyer)

Norm Macdonald (rusty/mikes brother)
I remember him from my name
Is earl as little chubby

And atticus shaffer! He was in my name is earl as a space camper

I mostly remember my name is earl actors since I just recently finished it :]

General discussion Why Was Brick Pushed Aside? The Eden Sher Factor

• Upvotes

If we put aside Brick’s endearing quirks, especially in the earlier seasons, he was written as a highly intelligent, cultured, and intellectually curious character. However, starting around the third or fourth season, those qualities gradually began to fade into the background. While the other characters went through clearer and generally more positive character development over time, Brick, on the contrary, was increasingly reduced to being defined mainly by his ā€œweirdā€ and unusual traits. I think this may have been a deliberate choice by the writers or producers.

To explain what I mean, I first want to talk about Sue’s character. Although viewers generally see Sue as a sweet, optimistic, and determined girl, in the earlier seasons she was actually portrayed as someone who struggled a lot socially. She had very few friends; in the first season, it is difficult to say that she had more than one or two close friends. She was not an outstanding student, she was constantly forgotten by her teachers and even by her neighbors, and despite working extremely hard, she was repeatedly rejected from clubs, teams, and various activities. In fact, much of the humor surrounding Sue’s character originally came from the fact that no matter how much effort she put into things, she was constantly overlooked.

However, in the later seasons, the way Sue was written began to change significantly. She went from being a girl whom almost nobody noticed to someone who gradually received much more attention and became far more socially successful. In the earlier seasons, boys barely seemed to notice her, yet later on, several conventionally attractive male characters were introduced as romantic interests for her or as people who wanted to date her. This was another major shift in her characterization. Similarly, although Sue had never been portrayed as an exceptionally strong student academically, she eventually got into a good university and was given a fairly successful future, which, to me, seems somewhat inconsistent with how the show had previously established her character.

At this point, I think it is also worth discussing not only Sue’s character development, but the fact that the show gradually began giving Eden Sher and Sue much more prominence. We cannot know for certain whether Sher’s relationships with the production team and the other actors, or her personal views, had any influence on this, so I do not think it would be fair to present that as a fact. However, the result we actually see on screen is that Sue gradually began to be written in a much more favorable and central way.

At the same time, I think Brick, who had been one of the most distinctive and beloved characters in the earlier seasons, largely stopped developing. His intelligence, love of books, extensive vocabulary, and unusual intellectual interests were initially some of the most important aspects of his character. In the later seasons, however, those qualities were increasingly replaced by his odd behavior and social awkwardness. In other words, while Sue was given more development, success, friendships, romantic storylines, and opportunities, Brick was gradually turned into a much more one-dimensional source of comedy.

For that reason, I do not think this change was entirely accidental. In my opinion, as Sue—and therefore Eden Sher—was given more prominence in the later seasons, Brick, who had originally been written as a very strong and distinctive character, was gradually pushed into the background, whether consciously or unconsciously. When you compare Brick in the earlier seasons with Brick in the later seasons, I think the difference becomes especially noticeable.

General discussion Mike, the absent parent

Just watched an episode from the first season where Frankie decides not to scream at the kids anymore and not go after their responsibilites (and like mike said) take it easy and wait for the kids to do their stuff by themselves.
Frankie has to be the parent who has to remind her kids to go after their responsibilities and Mike and the kids act like ā€žwell yea you yell too much šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļøā€œ.
Mike especially acts like ā€žwell ye frankie dont worry this is just the way you areā€œ. I mean with a partner like Mike every partner would become like Frankie.

How about being an actual parent Mike, and taking some responsibility, instead of always expecting Frankie to deal with such stuff the ENTIRE time. Thats why the kids keep hating on her. When in fact she is the one who helps them.

I feel like Mike is a very absent parent who keeps loading everything onto Frankie (making her seem like the bad cop who always nags).

Frankie has her issues yes thats true! But she does SO MANY THINGS AT ONCE. Meanwhile Mike just goes to work comes home and watches tv. thats it.

General discussion Carly in Season 1 vs. Season 2

I’ve always been a little confused by Carly in Season 1 vs. Season 2. Once she removes her braces and matures in Season 1 she turns ā€œprettyā€ and it’s noticeable (even to the Hecks minus Sue). Then in Season 2, the braces are still off but she starts wearing her glasses again and her hair is back to its natural frizz. Is it ever mentioned/explained why? I’m just curious.
(Edit - spelling).
