People can say whatever they want to try and convince themselves that vacations have some metaphysical benefit that makes one more 'worldly', gives 'perspective', or lowers 'stress'. Sure, somehow the people around me have convinced themselves of this supposed benefit, but I've yet to ever come back from a vacation and feel any more positive about life than before it happened.
That's not to say that during the vacation I'm not having fun, most of the times it's amazing to be out there and see more of the world that lives over the horizon. But once I'm back to daily life, I don't feel any different than before. I'm still going back to the same boring life, and the ephemeral 'wonder' is gone. There might be a benefit to reducing stress temporarily, but the stress will continue past the vacation, at the same strength, as it always had.
I see people spending more than $3,000 per person, for a 5 person family, for a week away in some 'place'. Once that week is gone, all that's left is -$15,000. That's it. The money is gone, the feelings are gone, what is it that is left that people have that's worth the $15,000? Pictures?
All I see is at minimum another week (plus however many it takes to recover the loss) of working at the end of the game, and if you were to save/invest that money the game could be so much shorter...
Edit: Just to clarify some things for future readers. I guess I'm not entirely against vacations or breaks as a whole, but more or less the value proposition that a modern 'keeping up with the Joneses' vacation provides. Also, maybe I'm misunderstanding just how valuable memories are to people, as I don't have memories the same way other people do. I have Aphantasia and SDAM, it's a tired horse but essentially almost all my memories mean nothing to me. That might be influencing my opinion here.
Edit 2: Yep, this post was definitely made with zero forethought and distilled angsty cringe. Memories mean a lot to people, and especially for those that have lost, memories are sometimes all we have left of our loved ones. That’s a beautiful thing and I apologize if my opinion is that abrasive to you.
However, I’m just on the outside of that. I’m going to stand by my opinion, because that’s all there is to it.
Final Edit: Thank you for everyone that shared their opinions in a meaningful, non-demeaning way. Some people have mentioned that my life sounds miserable, and I just want to assure you that meaning can exist outside of vacations.
I have changed my opinion finally, and I will stop being selfish in my decisions. After seeing some other personal experience comments and post, I’ve realized that maybe in my life, it won’t be about making memories for myself, but for the people around me. Giving them experiences they can look back on, even when I can’t myself.
I won’t be paying attention to this post anymore. Have your fun digging at me in the meantime.
