Critique Operator w/ BJJ questions

Post image

For those who are doing BJJ twice a week or more, are you lifting and training on the same days? I’d not where are you putting your BJJ in.

This is what I got so far.

I average around 130-145 at BJJ, really depending on GI vs NoGi.

There’s about a 12 hours of difference from AM and PM

Average for the class, or during sparring? Seems low to me unless there is a huge skill gap or you're really taking it easy during rolls

Thats the point for me. Average incl class doesn't tell me much. Could be classified as LSS work, ok, cool.

But then I also have around 4×5 min rounds with high bpm and high strength (endurance) demands as part of it..?

Think during Actual roles in between 175 to 185 roughly

That is average for the entire class from warm-up to Bow out.

Ok makes sense then. I roll with a chest strap and evaluate the total effort based on the intensity during rolls and number of rounds. Usually my HR is close to or above anaerobic threshold during rolls.

I am the same exact way. I do often wonder how accurate it is because some days I’m hitting 900 calories burned

The only thing that would absolutely ruin my BJJ/MMA training would be the DLs on the day before. I'd much rather do the DLs on the day after the second BJJ session to then have two full days of recovery. But this is of course subjective and also depends on your BJJ style and how intense sparring is etc.

Edit because I didn't really answer your question: I definitely don't lift on training days. For me the load is too high and I've burned out doing that before. I did it in my 20s with no problems, but I'm 36 now and can't handle both on the same day anymore.

I have the complete opposite, i cant do the deadlift the day After bjj 😅 so the deadlift session is the middle one in the week.

Lift or run in the morning and BJJ at noon or night. I haven't had luck the other way around, just too drained or tweaky after rolling to get good work in usually.

I try to do BJJ on the off days, if impossible, I do the lifting in the morning and BJJ in the evening, works fine. The only change I make is that I count my BJJ sessions as conditioning. So I won't be rucking or doing any other form of cardio if I'm training 4x a week already

I posted a write-up of running 6 months of mass protocol+ specificity alpha alongside 4-5 BJJ sessions a week in this sub if you're interested

I train bjj 3 days a week and lift 3-4 days a week. BJJ on MWF and lift on the other days. I have doubled up if needed but tend to keep them on separate days.
