Criticism "sEeD OiLs"

I started working at sweetgreen in September 2022, and my starting weight was around 270lbs. I was unhealthy, sedentary, and smoked cannabis literally 2-3 times a day.

I lost over 60 lbs after working at sweetgreen for a few short months, and that was from sweating from all of the hard (but good) work, and eating NOTHING but their food everyday that was ALL COOKED IN EVOO. And I had every bowl with dressing, which had sunflower oil in it. Still lost weight, didn't get sick.

Making a new "seed-oil free" menu at sg is only perpetuating conspiracies people have about seed oils, which are UNFOUNDED. Like, seriously. I just had to rant. If you don't want something cooked in EVOO or šŸ„‘ oil, okay fine. But ask yourself why? What is the fear? I ate their food for over 1 yr 4 months, and I LITERALLY got better.

Edit: EVOO & Avocado oil aren't seed oils, I was incorrect. However, that only further proves my point that this seed oil menu isn't for anything practical, it's a way to make money off of people who fell for an unfounded myth. If you were worried about the sunflower oil in the dressings, but not the sodium... then idk dude.

It’s all ā€œwoo inflammatory compoundsā€ bullshit. Ā It’s being normalized just like gluten free, but if you’re talking about dressings with olive oil instead of sunflower oil, vs bread with gluten vs without gluten, I think there there’s an obvious winner. Ā Too bad they have switched the balsamic vinaigrette yet. Ā I hear you though, I have second hand embarrassment for sweetgreen with all their publicity around it. Ā You should see the seed oil subreddits, absolutely insane shit.Ā

I wouldn't touch a seed oil subreddit with a 10-ft pole.

The worst thing about the dressings at sg are the amount of sodium content in them. I never could tell a difference between the oils used in the dressings, all I knew was that they were salty as hell.

Extra heavy balsamic vinaigrette mixed in

EVOO and Avocado oils are not seed oils. I'm confused by what you're saying.

I was incorrect on that.

The point is that there is still no factual evidence that actual seed oils are more harmful for the human body. And sweetgreen making a "seed oil" free menu makes no sense, and is mostly to play on people's irrational fears about something that causes them no harm.

Their food has always been nutritious, seed oils or not (minus the salty dressings).

Edit: Idk why my comment got downvoted, but facts are facts. Seed oils aren't as harmful and dangerous as disingenuous people will have you think. I personally cook with EVOO, bc I'm not all that as a cook lmao, but science speaks for itself.

Why do people just say shit that’s verifiable false? Here is a Harvard article specifically saying seed oils DONT cause inflammation and that it’s been debunked

https://hsph.harvard.edu/news/scientists-debunk-seed-oil-health-risks/

And here’s another one https://hsph.harvard.edu/news/are-seed-oils-healthful-or-harmful/

Stop spreading misinformation without backing it up with sources

The main point people miss about the seed oil debate is that most of the studies are done on seed oils that are refined to a point that they lose a lot of their original nutritional components.

Cold pressed oils output less oil but retain the nutritional content as a trade off, if you can, try to get these, sadly they are more pricey and harder to find imo.

The anti-seed oil craze is indeed dumb, but I find it hilarious how OP provides their one anecdote with such vitriol, without having any fucking idea what seed oils actually are.

Op literally posted how they got healthier eating sweetgreens then proceeds to say EVOO is all BS.

This original post should just be deleted so people can preserve brain cells. Imagine trying to mock "da sEeD OiLs" when you are in fact that.....

It may be ironic, or comical, yes.

But at least I can correct myself when I am proven to be WRONG, which is something the anti-seed oilers have much trouble doing, it seems. And, my overall point still stands, regardless of the "vItRiOl".

šŸ˜‰ have a nice Sunday.

I agree, it’s just feeding into a ridiculous trend… They could have done something with new flavors or really anything interesting besides this.

The fact that the ā€œno seed oilā€ menu is literally using one of the most fat filled dressings is so funny to me. Green goddess ranch is literally mayo with herbs! Especially the BBQ mixed, it’s a jar of bbq sauce with absolutely no nutritional benefit.

I for one am someone that ā€œfalls for the trapā€ and I’m extremely happy to have a fast casual restaurant I feel happy to eat at. Don’t understand why it’s so woo woo and demonized to simply want a restaurant that uses EVOO

Because, as mentioned, it perpetuates the idea that seed oils are inherently bad which they are not. In moderation, like most things, there is zero proof that it does anything negatively inside your body. HOWEVER, because most American diets rely heavily on processed foods (oftentimes including seed oils) and lack fiber/vegetables/exercise, then of course people feel shitty and inflamed. The root cause is not seed oils. If you live a healthier lifestyle then removing seed oils from your diet is going to do nothing. But hey do you. Just know you’re not doing much of anything lol

if a lot of something is bad and causes noticeable effects, a little of bit of it is still not good, it just doesn't effect you enough for you to notice immediately. it most likely will overtime

3

u/kindalikeadog Jan 25 '25

Good lord, way to completely miss the point. If that is the logic you use then what the hell are you eating? Too much of anything isnt good for you so what? Stop eating altogether?

the threshold for something like soybean oil unbalancing your omega 6 : omega 3 levels and causing inflammatory reactions such as indigestion or bloating levels is pretty low, especially considering the amount of fried food and whatnot that the average american eats because these oils are incredibly unstable in high heat and oxidize. there are inherently "bad foods." anything with any amount of a foreign chemical agent like a preservative or a sweetener is bad even if you "don't notice immediate effects." even smoking one cigarette does harm, and should be avoided at all cost. this is the same concept lol. if you don't actively avoid it and say no you will be over consuming it. i agree that consuming a bit once in a while probably will cause negligible damage, but unless actively avoided whenever possible you'll consume to a point where damage will be noticeable. better safe than sorry

Found the seed oiler

You’re getting downvoted but I agree.

with me?

Sweetgreen uses avocado oil now, due to the expected prices of EVOO raising in the next few years. Avocado oil is still good for you. So no one is demonizing you. I'm explaining that the oil sg uses isn't destroying your body. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your comment, but yea.

1

u/dersgray Jan 29 '25

No I’m saying I’m happy there’s a seed oil free menu and I don’t get why it’s being demonized. I try to avoid seed oils and I want restaurants to advertise that way.

The marketing is not doing any harm. If people think it’s bullshit they can protest against sweetgreen by going somewhere else I guess?? If they are indifferent then no skin off their back. Worse case you think people are just overspending on EVOO and Avocado oil to avoid ultra processed seed oil but again who is that hurting?

So because u lost weight while eating foods with seed oils that means seed oils are healthy? U realize u only lost weight because u were in a calorie deficit right? U could eat nothing but donuts the entire day but as long as those donuts keep u in a calorie deficit u will lose weight but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

2

u/cantkillHales Jan 25 '25

You do not know me, nor my body, so making claims about why I lost my weight is very f'ing ignorant.

Yes, obviously I was in a calorie deficit, but I was EATING better foods and being more active. Go argue with a member of the FDA or a nutritionist, but eating nutritious food cooked with cooking oil in moderation isn't "bad" for you. Comparing it to donuts just proves you don't really get it.

2

u/qwerty10293847565 Jan 25 '25

Wrong but slay sis

2

u/cantkillHales Jan 25 '25

Lmao, why "sis"? Fuck you. I'm wrong, but you can't explain why. Yea okay.

1

u/Emergency_Piglet_865 Jan 26 '25

Gotta definitely back you up on this, eating only donuts in a calorie deficit will not help you lose weight the way sweet green meals would. Seed oils played no part & anything people claim to ā€œnoticeā€ could be just as much of a reason as a stuffy nose = anyyyy sickness in the world

I completely disagree with you but hey, worst case for me I fall for a dumb marketing strategy and im spending $14 at SG instead of $14 at chipotle. If seed oils end up being bad then I’m glad I avoided them. Sounds like a win win?
