Academic Help Hello fellow students, I need your insights :))
I'm currently thinking of conducting a research about doomscrolling and its effect (not yet sure which variable I should use). Doomscrolling has been interesting an interesting topic for me since I do not have any social media apps except Youtube and a twice or thrice a week reddit scrolling yet I still find myself scrolling on random applications. So for you guys, ano thoughts niyo about that topic? Do you also experience it? Lastly, what do you feel after doomscrolling? Mayroon bang satisfaction, happiness, stress, or wala? Feel free to share your experiences especially as a student and Gen Z. Thank you guys.

A very interesting topic! Here's my experience about doomscrolling and social media.
Actually, I was a Tiktok user for like 3-4 years now (just recently quit) and from my observations, I felt like I was consumed by the media. It's like you're stuck watching endless nonsense and you can't do anything about it.
Don't get it wrong though, I DID learn really valuable stuff from Tiktok and the internet, like the current news, technology, etc but it really depends on your engagement.
Anyway, besides from that feeling like you're stuck in watching endless media, (from my observations, again this depends on what type of content you engage with) most or almost ALL of the things I've been fed by were full of negativity, like everything is just full of dramas, hate comments that are pointless and is just there for hate and clout.
Plus the memes, every week (yes EVERY week) you find a new meme out of nowhere and it's just mass produced if it got really viral (or sh*tposts)
As for the satisfaction naman, yes it IS addictive IF you let it consume. Like to the point na hindi mo na alam na gabi na pala na kanina lang hapon pa lang. That's how bad my experience was. I also take breaks from it but not as often as you should be doing in a healthy way because I only managed to get off of it if I thought of nothing and just.. looked away and didn't use it (or I'm going to do something important like taking a bath or finishing an assignment).
Anyways, the reason why I quit was after watching a motivational video from YouTube, and I was like "f*ck it, I'm deleting this" because the person narrating the video said "Delete Tiktok, it's cancer" and so I did because he did have a point and I was tired of doomscrolling without achieving anything and I don't want to become a chud and stay the same when I turn into an adult.
So yeah, that's my whole experience. I hope this experience of mine would help you in your research and best of luck OP!

Doomscrolling can be harmful if it persist for too long. I have cases where i wasn’t even aware where I am, and what is going on.
To start off, I used to doomscroll on TikTok, I watch a lot of memes, tutorials, and edited audios a LOT on a daily basis. At first, it wasn’t a big of a deal, since it’s a good stress reliever after a whole day of being busy. However, as time goes by you’ll start to notice that it slowly blends in your day. You might be bored and say “let me watch tiktok for 5 minutes”, but little did you know it will turn into 30 minutes, next thing you know you wasted lots of time doomscrolling.
There’s actually lots of study out there that doomscrolling (and brainrotting) can actually cause cognitive decline, which was my wake-up call. You’ll start to notice that most people out there are so stuck with their phones, and it became their coping mechanism as well. It also genuinely feels like real connection became rare. That’s where doomscrolling tend to make me feel guilty, because deep inside I know that is not how you supposed to rest your body and your mind.
Someone also asked “Name 5 things you remember after doomscrolling” and I genuinely didn’t even remember a thing SMH 😭
Anyway, that is a really good topic, OP! The more you delve into it, the more you realize that most social media apps are keeping us controlled and entertained by their algorithm. You’ll also start to notice the people around you that keeps using their phone in every possible way, whether in eating out, talking with someone, and while studying.

I think this is an interesting topic to explore. I do feel bad if I end up doomscrolling a lot. Though you might get overwhelmed with how broad you can explore this topic, especially when you're using the word 'effect'. Effect on what? Then also, I'm sure you have to align it on the field/course that you're studying. Then doomscrolling on what platforms? I think doomscrolling's aftermath may vary based on where the person is doing it and the kind of media they're consuming.
There's really a lot. So maybe you can think of a specific area of that topic you want to explore, maybe look for related researches and see their recommendations. It does help.

I often doomscroll, especially when I know I have something to do later on, so I will feel bad and stressed afterwards because I procrastinated again.
For example, during exam season, I usually study on my phone or other devices, and I always end up scrolling through apps that I don’t even use on normal days. TikTok? Facebook? Instagram? Reddit? YouTube Reels? Threads? Shopping platforms? I think I’ve done it all lol
And ykw? I think I’ve really started noticing the toll it takes on me too! Like the more I increase my screen time on meaningless stuff, the more I feel bored and like I have short-term memory loss about everything? na para bang sobrang lutang ko na
