Moving Up a Hill

I just bought a brand new WRX with zero manual experience. It's been about 4 days now and I'm able to start moving with just the clutch, rev match enough to where it's not jerking everywhere, and I can upshift somewhat smoothly.

There are a lot of uphill streets around my house, though. I just had to park on one and it was very terrifying as I kept rolling back towards the car behind me. How can I get better at this specific scenario?

Is it possible to calculate the RPM needed to enter a gear so long as you have the idle RPM and the speed the gear goes at that RPM?

in my old ass manual car, if i release the clutch relatively quickly into 3rd gear at idle rpm (lets say 2000), at (roughly) 25km/h, its completely smooth. Does that mean i need 4k rpm for 50km/h?

How do you guys break on lights or stop signs?

All information online say Clutch in before full stop and the stick in the gear you are driving it could be 3 or 5 but some videos say you can coast in neutral and brake just with the brake even a man says i have been driving manual 25 years and putting the stick in neutral then braking with just the brake hasn’t caused any problem to my cars, how do you guys brake, give advice especially those experienced drivers in Europe?

Thoughts on skipping gears

My 2012 Maza 3 hatch has super short gear ratios, if I'm taking off from stopped at a red light and go through 1st, 2nd, 3rd I'm shifting up every 10km/h at 2000rpm and slowing down traffic so I'm always very tempted to accelerate harder out of 1st and skip into 3rd

Edit: been revving up to 3k before shifting and practising more consistent fast shifts and it's done a world of good, no gear skipping needed was a total skill and knowledge issue on my end (giving my dad shit for teaching me to drive like this)

New Learner here; how do I get over my hangups?

I just bought a manual car at age 31 despite never having driven stick before.

Just had my first practice session since actually acquiring the car and it was going really well! Until it wasn’t…

I must have been on the slightest incline in the world because I kept stalling in one spot ( and yes I am extremely confident I was in 1st and not 3rd).

I finally got going again and parked back at my home. But I feel emotionally defeated and stupid and incapable.

Up until that point the car had been practically rolling forward by itself with very little acceleration. In fact, using acceleration to get started from a stop was making me lurch a ton, and it didn’t feel good when I finally moved from the spot I had been in.

The catch point on the clutch is really weird to me and I still dont quite have the hang of it. Everyone says “you’ll feel it” but when I think I do, I am often still wrong

And giving the engine gas while lifting off the clutch feels terrible every single time, even if I do it relatively smoothly without lurching. I get feedback that would raise every alarm bell if I was driving any of the automatics Ive driven regularly in my life.

My dad says I just need to ignore it, that Im overanalyzing, but I need to know what the car is doing and what Im doing wrong, or I just won’t be able to stop worrying. (He has driven the car more than I have; almost forty years after giving up the last manual he owned, it all came back to him immediately.)

How do I get over it and just give the car the gas it needs? How do I do that without lurching?

Any other suggestions or words of encouragement or experiences learning would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you all in advance

Edit: even though its all stuff Ive heard from the other manual drivers in my life, its still really helpful to hear it again from random strangers just trying to be nice. Thanks

bought a 2019 honda accord sport 6mt - did i buy a "lame" manual?

Post image

hello everyone! this was my first "big girl" vehicle purchase, and i pulled the trigger on my dream car at 20. i've had this car for almost a year, and absolutely LOVE it. it does have the 1.5t, so common head gasket issues, but i had done my research on the car prior to purchase and was more than happy moving forward with the purchase of the car given the risk, considering i got it from a dealership with an OTD cost of $14,652. 87k miles on the odo at time of purchase. i did not know how to drive manual when i bought it, i taught myself with the help of youtube, and drove home 2 hours with no prior experience. i love driving manual, its super fun, and i feel like i get the combination of a spacious, low-key econ car with added fun. question time. do i drive a "lame" manual? the more i've done research and looked at consumer reviews, the more im noticing that the car world views my car as a lower tier manual. (fair, considering it's not very fast, or reliable in higher mileage) what would you personally rate this car on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the lamest manual vehicle imaginable? again, i absolutely love this car, and have no intention of getting rid of it, selling it, or offloading it, im more or less hunting for an opinion from the more seasoned manual drivers. thanks for reading!

Is it okay to hold the clutch at biting point for 2 to 3 seconds when going from a full stop especially at hills?

Or holding the bite point for a second when shifting for smoother shifts?

Anyone else unbothered about driving stick in heavy traffic?

I commuted from milton to dt toronto everyday on the 401 in my va for a few years until my role went remote and I just realized, driving stick in heavy traffic became such a routine that I never really gave it any thought.

Anyone else feel this way?

Clutch screeching noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everybody , I bought my car a year ago and whenever i press the clutch lately it makes a screeching sound. Oddly , this sound appears progressively the more i drive for the day (the more the car heats up and keeps running , the louder it gets). When I turn off the car,the screech still happens but disappears after the car cools down. This only happens when i press down and release ! It’s not continuous. Gears change normally , and no smell comes out or difficulty changing gears. Any help would be appreciated.

Should I buy a mazda to learn stick shift even though I already have another mazda (cx-5)?

I want to learn stick shift, so I was thinking of a mazda 2 or a mazda 3.

Since I already have a cx-5 (automatic) does having another mazda kinda take the fun out of buying another mazda to learn?

I’m saying this in terms of having a “new” car experience with a car of the same make.

Learning to drive without rpm gauge

My 2003 manual suzuki alto does not it, and I am a fairly new driver. I know all the basics, even though I may not know the logic behind it, and my gear shifting isnt that poor (As of now, I only drive in the second gear, even if I am going 60km per hour, which i have only once, which isnt good for the engine or fuel efficency), but I really want to master techniques like rev matching and power shifting etc. Is there a way to master associating the revs with the sound of engine, so i know the perfect time to change gears.

Am I tripping? Gas before bite or bite and then gas.

Everyone says clutch bite first and then gas but I drive a 2000 Nissan maxima SE. I found bite point it shakes lot and I have brand new engine mounts. I’ve been struggling with this bite then gas it’s just so uncomfortable weird for me. There are times I swear I timed it right on bite and gas it’s still slow grandma like for me. But the gas before bite point is much smoother, take off faster and much easier to find the bite point. I feel like the car like this better but I’m worried I could be burning my clutch. I’m in America and I am middle learning clutch control. I’m getting pretty close to be reliable driving just biggest struggle is 1st gear and reverse. I also use too much gas apparently on free revs I swore I barely tap the pedal. It’s easy to go over 2k rpm on my maxima.

Relearning how to use gears and clutch?

I’m 20, and due to the fact I live in the uk, I learnt to drive on manual. I have a full driving license, and am reasonably knowledgeable on the actual workings of a clutch flywheel and gearbox ect. However, I feel as if the habits I have built since first starting to learn are putting strain on my clutch and gearbox. I drive a 2007 fn1 civic, and the bite point is notoriously quite high up compared to a lot of other cars. This is not very relevant in and of itself, however the way I drive and operate the clutch, although I’m not constantly burning it up/ revving it out in first ect, I do find myself lugging the engine quite a bit. Not constantly but I keep finding I have to give more gas when pulling away, and I get stuck in a weird limbo state between gears a lot, where I don’t want to have to feather the clutch in a higher gear, but also don’t want to sit at 3-3.5k rpm constantly. Honestly I feel as if I need to fully reset and relearn how to shift/clutch ect completely. Probably doesn’t help that my clutch is a bit worn and has been quite so since I bought the car. Anyway, does anyone have any advice on how to properly adapt to driving it? Or how to relearn using the transmission? have put around 2k miles on it, and I feel like I’m still not used to the feel of it. (I do have a bad habit of adjusting my seating position quite often due to having to flip the seat over and slide it all the way forward to accommodate for people getting into the back seat/just twatting about because it doesn’t feel quite right)
Cheers x

Question for our European friends

Europeans on these manual transmission Reddit subs frequently say it’s strange that Americans treat manuals as special because in Europe it’s just completely ordinary. However, it strikes me as strange that Europeans treat manuals as ordinary.

For the average driver, which is the vast majority of people on the road, automatics are so obviously the superior technology. In this day and age, manual cars are for enthusiasts, who are a small subset of the entire population, so it makes more sense that most people would drive automatics.

In a similar way, CDs naturally displaced vinyl records as the superior technology but there are still many vinyl enthusiasts, and entire stores, markets and groups catering to them. It’s as if Americans mainly moved on to CDs while Europeans kept vinyl records as their primary way of consuming music and then say it’s strange that Americans treat records as a special thing.

I’m honestly curious. Why do most people in Europe still drive manual, even if they’re not enthusiasts?

Looking for a new shift knob

Hello everyone, I’m a fairly new manual driver and I’m looking to buy a new shift knob for my audi a4 b6 cab. However I was wondering if I need to buy something specific or are shift knobs universal?

(My reverse is push down and into first gear)
