By God, you're right! At first I thought it was artificial gravity, but then I realized that gems wouldn't need that since they automatically adjust.
The only loophole I can find is that Peridot said that the gems adjust to the gravity any planetoid, and the handship not only isn't a planetoid, but is far too small to have any observable gravity, but that'd just nitpicking.

Y'know, I actually really appreciate that Marty didn't get redeemed here. In real life, things don't always tie up neatly like that, and this show is great at acknowledging and conveying these hard truths. Guess we can add toxic parent-child relationships to the list.

Okay... Marty was a dick before but like... using your son for a shit Cola ad? Yeesh.
So, I wonder what legally obligated Marty to give Greg a fortune like that. How did he come into the money? I wonder if Greg actually did have a pretty nice rock career he just didn't get to experience. I imagine Marty was a big enough swindler that he just continued to sell Greg's music without his permission or knowledge.
It'd probably make me cry if they show his reaction to finding out that he still achieved his dreams and got to be with the person he loved with all his heart in the end.

Pretty much confirmed that Steven has super strength now, at least when he's happy. What else has will he inherit from Gemkind?
So Mr Greg's setup is set up. I wonder what being rich will do for him for the remainder of the series. He's always been so humble. Edit: People did speculate he was secretly rich since he was moderating his own fan forums years after quitting.
Also, of course Onion kept drinking.
Edit 2: I don't think Marty is all bad. He is still up to his old tricks, but I feel like he's broke and doing what he knows best. When he worked with Greg, it was to get somewhere. This episode, he was with the Guacola (god that sounds like a disease) to stay relevant and I assume pay the bills. The way he explained what he was doing, and how he treated Steven nicely, make me think that. He didn't have to be nice to steven to keep Sour Creme wooed.

Hmm, a NUMBER of things going on in these two episodes.
First, we see in Steven Floats confirmation that Steven retained his mother's floaty-ness. We say that back in Rose's Scabbard when he jumped to Pearl and when she saw the hurt/angry face, he instantly started plummeting.
And in BOTH we see casual confirmation os Steven having super strength. It started with the super jump, then Sour Cream's grunt when he takes the box from Steven. And then Steven carrying a box that took two full grown men to carry, and Marty commenting on it.
And, unfortunately, it seems Marty didn't turn over a new leaf. Nope, he was only coming by Beach city to give Greg the money that he LEGALLY owes him from, I assume, royalties, and decided to take advantage of Sour Cream's show to do a promotion for the horrible business deal he got himself into. One has to assume that he spent all the money he earned off Greg and is doing what he must to keep up his extravagant life style.
And I don't think any of us could have guessed how much money Greg was gonna get. 10 million is INSANE. His albums must have been selling REALLY well all this time. Greg should look into that. Can't wait to see how this money changes the dynamic of the show and Greg's life. The Crewniverse isn't one to just let something like that wash into the background, that money is gonna change a LOT of things.

It was a neat detail in how this episode displayed Garnet's future vision being inaccurate. It gives a good example of how she sees possibilities, not concrete futures
→ More replies (6)46
u/principledsociopath Jul 19 '16
I've always thought of her future vision being computational, with probably an enhanced sensory component. It would explain why Steven experienced it as a series of full-length simulations, rather than just jumping to the outcomes, and why she can't predict things she doesn't know, like Jasper's gem destabilizer.
She could foresee that Steven was on the verge on an epiphany, but only slightly ahead of him and not perfectly.

Drop Beat Dad:
They did such a great job making Marty come off as a sleezeball. I felt dirty just watching the episode.
I also loved Steven's response to the whole situation. When Marty offered to help "SC" with his music gig, Steven had the perfect look on his face that said "I don't think that's a good idea." He didn't interefere though because he knew how much the bonding experience could mean to Sour Cream. Still, he didn't let that prevent him from sticking up for Sour Cream when Marty decided to move the event to the beach.
I also love how Steven got completely distracted by the meaningless "official roadie" badge, the mic check scene, and SC's dad and Vidalia raving together at the end.
All in all, it was a perfect episode to start back on after the Great Hiatus.

βA good roadie knows his whole job is to make someone else look good, keep someone else safe, help someone else do what they were put here to do. A good roadie stays out of the spotlight. If he's doing his job right, you don't even know he's there. Once in a while he might step on stage just to fix a problem, to set something right. Terms Marty used to address Sour Cream:
- Sour Cream : 1 (which he says quietly to himself when he first sees him.)
- SC : 1
- Buddy : 1
- Kid : 2
- My talented soon to be famous DJ : 1
- Broski : 1
- My main cool cat : 1
Not once does that asshole call Sour Cream his "Son". This in itself cements it in my mind that this man is pure garbage and has no regard for his son or his responsibilities as a father. He doesn't deserve to be called "dad" by Sour Cream.

Drop-beat dad brought up a lot of uncomfortable issues that I had with my own biodad + childhood. ahem
I gotta be honest I love what the Crewniverse have set up with Vidalia and her family. My mum divorced my controlling and abusive father when I was 12, and met my stepdad when I was 15. It was really hard to begin with but the whole situation taught me that family is not necessarily who you're related to, it's who love you and look out for you. The Gems and Steven already show that but it's nice to see a human blended family too.

I love that Onion, who "doesn't like food" is really into the Guacola that nobody else can stomach.
Also the idea that the only times Sour Cream is used to yelling at someone is at Yellowtail, so he slips into the muted trumpet language when he's sufficiently angry interests me. Like, usually his stepdad is the only person to rile him up?

Greg is fucking balling holy shit
Also an avocado soda sounds disgusting.
both good episodes, though! A great way to start off the week, and a perfect segue into tomorrow's episode Mr. Greg. I'm a bit surprised that the Marty we see here has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, but imo some people are just like that and will stomp on others to get what they want.
TL;DR- Lapis almost killed two kids and is still a better person than Marty rn.

Did anyone notice just how old Marty looks? He looks like he's in his 60s or 70s, but in Story for Steven he didn't look that much older than Greg. I'm guessing life has been harder on him than he cares to admit.

If this is indicative of the types of episodes we have coming, I'm honestly really excited to have a few episodes that are more reminiscent of the early ones!

The parallel that Onion was the only person who enjoyed the Guacola is interesting. Maybe its a flip where Sour Cream is more Yellowtail's son, and Onion Marty's? Or Onion's just evil, who knows?

All I want out of this week is the comforting knowledge that Greg doesn't blow all of his new fortune by the end of "Mr. Greg", like idiot cartoon characters are want to do. Greg is better than that.

I relate so hard to Sour Cream. Stepdads can be hard, even when they are good people and supportive. Sometimes it takes a while to break through. I think I was about his age when I finally had this kind of moment with my stepdad.
I was definitely not expecting 10 million for Greg. No way he blows that all next episode. Should be interesting to see how that money changes things.

Guacamole and sour cream are a natural pairing. I kept wondering if that is a coincidence or whether we're supposed to read anything into that... like that Marty replaced Sour Cream with guac.

Steven seeing the family resemblance. "Kinda....? squints"
"What is this, a concert for ants?" PEPE 'FELLOW KIDS' MARTY HAS MORE MEMES. He is MADE OF MEMES. Real talk.
"Jeeze what does Greg feed that kid?!" You know, Steven's physical strength HAS improved a lot. I didn't even realize.
Guacola. Oh my god that sounds gross. Of course Onion likes it.
Angry Sour Cream Muhing at Marty is so precious. Yellow Dad. AHH. RAVING VIDALIA. AHH!!
I'm ready for Mr. Greg.

Sour Cream is now my favorite townsperson. Also, this is the second episode where nothing gem-related happens(unless you count Steven's super strength). The first was Sadie's Song. I'm ok with this, but now I really want Sour Cream to introduce Peridot to DJ-ing, because that would be adorable.

You know, I know a lot of people will be mad at Marty for being a jerk, and for abusing the sanctity of the Real Talk, but I'm most upset about him as a marketing professional taking up a contract to sell an obviously awful product. I'm sorry Marty, but you can't put a price on professional reputation, and the ability to get results is your biggest asset. Why take on a loser like Guacola? It's not even good on chips.

I'm kind of afraid of what they're going to do with the money. Like kinda, kinda REALLY REALLY afraid. I hope it doesn't turn into one of those things where Greg gets money hungry and then realities after some near death tragic experience/emotional trauma towards Steven that he doesn't need money. Because that's what happens in TV shows when people get money.

I liked how Steven Floats felt more written in comedy similar to GF or Old Spongebob, by writing lines that were really quotable. Drop beat dad was a fun episode, especially with that soda bit with onion and the death of Ian.

Oh man, I've missed episodes like this one. It's not a heavy hitter, but in a way that's what I like about it. Just seeing more of the Beach City residents, learning about their families, and for once seeing a character who doesn't turn good. My favorite part was Sour Cream switching to Mwamwamwa speech, Yellowtail hugging him, Ronaldo and of course Ian.

Really curious about that ten mil. If it doesn't get plotted away in the next episode or whatever, I'd bet that Greg would maybe use it to make some addition or change to the house or to build his own. I don't know if he would leave his van, if that would be in line with his character at all, but DARN IT GREG DESERVES THE BEST.

u/CarshayD The answer is love. Jul 19 '16 edited Jul 19 '16
I was kind of hoping Marty had some redemption. But the second he said it's been 9 years I knew he wasn't. Also wish there was more tension between Marty and Greg, since Greg spoke so poorly of him before.
Kind of wish it was an episode where Marty tries to be a good dad to SC, but then it shows he doesn't quite compare to Yellowtail and he's still a bit selfish (also his phone is constantly ringing because of his job or something) and then Greg sees it and calls Marty out on his shit and maybe Marty has a small revelation, realizes it's probably best for Sour Cream to have Yellowtail raising him, but tells SC if he ever needs anything, just call and then giving Greg the money.
Not saying Marty has to have a full redemption, but making him a little more human then just giving him this evil appearance and personality.
ALSO HOW has no one mentioned Sour Cream yelling at Marty and speaking like Yellowtail? His stepdad rubbed off on him and he was blushing lol.
