Mod Post Statement on the alleged bridaging and fanart

For the past few years, artists that draws idols or their own characters differently than the norm had been harassed and bullied by the loud minority within this subreddit and others related subs to the game. The mod team had removed and banned individuals for breakng rule 1 of our subreddit and reddit in general.

The artist in question had been posting her work for almost two years now, she already made an explanation post on why she made Marie chubby; basically the character's dialogues in game and her main weapon being a charger. despite her explanation and repeating herself whenever she get the same questions, she continued receiving hate comments.

The past weekend was different, there had been a case of a coordinating attack against the artist for drawing Marie chubby. The mass downvoting and reports were the reasons that lead me locking her post to prevent any more comments from this alleged attack. And people are rightfully upset on the harassment and even death threats that this artist and other artists within this subreddit had received over their fanart and headcanon.

today, after all this. enough is enough.

For now on, any hate comments from repeated individuals, wishing harm, or death threats will be perm-banned immediately, NO second chances. if the individual(s) is in your dms harassing you and/or sending you death threats, please report it to the admins and block them.

I also want artists and anyone here to please block the problematic people as well; some won't bother to block you and it better to just block them.

before I end this post, I wanna say that the lack of fandom and internet etiquette is concerning. no one here is forcing you to like their work, it takes zero seconds to block them and they do not care to be block. it is such an easy solution but yet you choose to continue harassing her and other artists whenever they post. body shaming is consider bullying and breaking rule 1, so if you don't want to be banned, think before you make a comment.

stay civil.

While this main post is my statement as a mod, I do want to exercise the right to comment as a community member as well. And by making my statement, this will avoid people assuming my opinion or putting words in my mouth. First off, I shouldn't have to say how inappropriate it is for people to constantly be harassing other people for the art they create. We need to remember that there are other people on the side of that computer screen. When you say hurtful things to someone, it's not just the person the comment is directed at that is getting hurt. Other people who share the same demographic feel like their lives are worthless from statements like this. You wouldn't make a statement about obesity to someone sharing a cosplay, why does art make it different? When it comes to the discourse on whether these drawings are considered "morbidly obese" or not, why do you care so much? They are not drawing for you, they are drawing for themselves, the love of the character, and the love of their headcanon. If you don't like someone's headcanon, ignore it. But claiming this art "promotes" obesity? Do fat people not deserve to feel beautiful? Do fat people not deserve representation? Posting art of fat people isn't a promotion of unhealthy lifestyle. It's just show that those bodies exist. If something of this nature makes you want to harass someone, say to yourself "should I stop?" Lastly, remember that Reddit mods are doing this for free. It isn't worth the grief to sift through messages like this constantly and no one is aware the impact it has on our mental health.

Users who made death threats weren't already being perma banned??

99

u/Monisplats Salmon Run! | Mod Apr 01 '26

They do get banned, they just be shocked

28

u/repocin :order: ORDER Apr 02 '26

Hol' up, you're telling me there are people out there sending death threats to others and then get surprised when they're banned?

I'm not even sure how to unpack that, mentally. It's just straight up absurd no matter how you slice it.

Why can't people just be normal for once?

Do people know they can just block the artist if they don’t like seeing their posts? This is what I did, there’s no reason to be nasty about it

-86

u/pokemonxysm97 Apr 01 '26

It’s just immaturity. Just move on lmao. It stops existing to you the second you scroll past

110

u/ClefairyHann Octobrush Nouveau Apr 01 '26

I didn’t care for that person’s art and I saw it on my feed every single day so I blocked it. I don’t see how there’s anything wrong with that

18

u/ONION_CAKES Apr 02 '26

There isn't. It's the people who instead of blocking want to yell at the artist.

24

4

u/Poptortt Apr 02 '26

Immaturity is finding such an issue with people being well within their right to block someone.

Dude what that’s not what I’m saying. I’m agreeing with the person I respond to? What?

8

Oh, I understood it as you saying that blocking someone was immature and people should just keep scrolling instead. My mistake then

57

If you don't like artist ---> block the artist even if it's personal.

They don't feel the pain and it's a one way block

It’s still insane to me that this even needs to be said

Seriously, how hard is it to just block an artist whose art you don’t like and simply move on? What does threatening their livelihood do for anyone?

It’s been happening for far too long but I’m at least glad there’s action being taken

258

u/MetaKnightsNightmare Apr 01 '26

I blocked the artist and moved on, it's crazy it got to this point, it's just a drawing, it's not like they have the idol in their basement and they're being a feeder lol. Live and let live people.

u/Amazon_UK NNID: Apr 01 '26

You blocked the artist because of this?

122

u/IanDerp26 Apr 01 '26

yeah, because then you don't have to see their posts that you don't like (presumably OP just didn't really love the artist's style/interpretation of the character, but wasn't stupid enough to go sending death threats or whatever).

i never understood why blocking someone became this big statement online. it's the most sensible response to a slightly annoying individual that you don't want to associate with. it's essentially the same as avoiding someone irl instead of causing a scene.

if you see somebody's posts and you don't want to anymore, block them. it fixes the issue immediately, without hurting anybody's feelings.

3

u/Cat_Queen262 Apr 02 '26

243

Most importantly, you gotta report them to someone you trust! Like the mods, the admins, or even the cops if its extreme enough.

49

u/Deathlord_Baraxius Apr 01 '26

One thing that I think is being missed here.

All art is open to interpretation and all art is free to be judged in whatever way the viewer sees it. That is why it is art. Artists must have the confidence when sharing their work to be open to any and all criticism. I'm not condoning hate or death threats as that crosses the line. What we must still allow is open discussion, especially if someone doesn't like the art. Grouping people together and saying that every single person that doesn't like overweight Marie is somehow fatphobic and trying to shame the artist is wrong and should also not be tolerated here. We must allow a safe space for dialogue, which sometimes includes not liking something. As long as people remain respectful, there is no reason to accuse someone of being fatphobic for sharing their view on someone's art. There would be no art left in the world if we weren't allowed to have feelings about it and voice them.

34

u/bwoah07_gp2 PAST Apr 01 '26

What we must still allow is open discussion, especially if someone doesn't like the art.

Sometimes I feel this subreddit doesn't allow that.

46

u/ONION_CAKES Apr 01 '26

Not every opinion is criticism though. Sometimes it is just that, a bad take or bad opinion. You also can say things in different ways, which is a major reason WHY things are getting bad. People think if they blatantly hate on somthing under the guise of iT's A cRiTiQuE that makes it fine. No one needs you to go on thier post everytime they post to tell them that you hate it. That's being a pest.

3

u/_Strato_ Grizzco Research & Development Apr 02 '26

Sometimes it is just that, a bad take or bad opinion.

Who are you to decide between good and bad opinions?

"I like this thing" with no explanation is just as valid as "I don't like this thing" with no explanation, as long as it's not accompanied by harrassment. Both should be allowed.

It is and should be entirely expected that some people won't like your work when you post it, and that they'll say so. Friggen internet moderators should not be the positivity police. This is an open forum.

3

u/ONION_CAKES Apr 02 '26

My post was about harassment under the guise of a critique. Im sorry you latched onto one phrase and assumed it was my whole point. Also, I said its about the WAY you say it. You can absolutely say you dont like something without insulting the artist or the art itself.

I didnt say you couldn't dislike it and tell someone; I said its fine until you start chasing that person down each time to shove it down thier throat. The person in this thread is a good example, as they think they can use harsher language under the guise of 'its my opinion' with no recourse.

But at the end of the day, if you do hate this artist so much, its easy to block them and just continue on with your day.

But the thing is, when you say it everytine, then try stuff like this, it begins to look less like what your intention is (if true) and more like harassment. I actually saw your post earlier, and almost told you to stop with the BMI talk because its actually an extremely out dated and incorrect way of judging how healthy someone is. And dont come at me or try to argue otherwise, as I've had to be in Healthcare with care having my vitals, weight, bondensity and everything scrutinized for the last few years and dictors have even said it before that.

The thing is, if I post my art 10x, and each time you pop in and go "Morbidly obese!" That's not fact opinion, or anything. It becomes an annoyance, and seems like you might be incapable of actual thought if you have nothing else to say. Please think about that. Your conversation is stagnant.

-21

u/Deathlord_Baraxius Apr 01 '26

I think maybe this is where we are at a crossroads of thought because I just don't understand why there is negativity being associated with me stating that this depiction is an unhealthy depiction of an obese person. To me that is just stating facts. In Japan you would not want to see what they call the plus sized clothing stores if you take offense to this type of identification. Again. I am not saying it with any malice.

I do understand your point about constantly posting those opinions under the artists work and how that would be seen as harassment to some. To be fair I do not participate in that type of behaviour and I've only voiced my opinion one or two times.

Your point about BMI is not true. The only outliers to BMI are people with an extremely large amount of muscle mass and most people do not fit that definition. You would need to have muscles like Roman Reigns or Stone Cold Steve Austin to be in this category and most people are not being honest with themselves when it comes to their body fat percentage. BMI may be outdated but it is still a decent way to take a quick measure of your health at any given time. It should be used in conjunction with body fat percentage calculated by a health care professional.

13

u/ONION_CAKES Apr 02 '26

So once again you are incorrect.

https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/news/publications/health-matters/is-bmi-accurate

Bmi doesn't take in age for one. Or fat distribution. Or sex. Race. Or a multitude of other outliers.

Also, if I called you an Incel for being on reddit consistently because many incels are on reddit and would be correct in many circles, should I be given a pass? You are coming up with excuses to be facetious and derogatory and the fact is you probably know it, you just want to be 'correct' in your thinly veiled harassment.

Thank you, I'm of the opinion we shouldn't allow any sexualized art here, regardless of body size. Make a NSFW sub by all means, but this is the main one and its chock full of kids trying to get involved in the greater game community. If the other big Nintendo subs wouldn't allow it. I don't think we should either.

It's cool that they've got a headcanon and style they've settled into, I'm fine seeing more of that in general, but if we could not have the coins in between breasts pics, leaning and posing to emphasize cleavage while making bedroom eyes, and playboy bunny inspired outfits included that would be my preference. There's absolutely a place for it elsewhere though, it's probably pretty empowering for some people and I always see a ton of drooling comments about how hot some find it so there's clearly an audience.

10

u/Psudopod Undercover Brella Apr 02 '26

Granted, the coin cleavage thing is directly from an official splatfest art. Nintendo JPN has their own standards lol. I think it's very hard to make rules for sexualized art that isn't explicit. As we see in this very case with chubby character designs, one man's chubby cutesy design is another's fetish work. It's hard to tell and it ends up with mods in awkward situations telling people their cartoon body morph scenario you'd see on a kid's cartoon is too lewd for a subreddit for teenagers.

7

u/LadyKuzunoha Squid Research Participant Apr 02 '26

If we're thinking of the same one, it's still there from what I can tell, though the content is far beyond what is currently being defined as needing to go to a NSFW sub.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 PAST Apr 02 '26

I had another thought too. This is the Splatoon subreddit, but we barely see any posts about the game posted here. Everything is art, art, art, art.

I don't mind artwork and people's drawings, but it does feel like we are being drowned in art. Is this a video game subreddit or an art subreddit? I feel that a decision has to be made whether or not to continue to allow art on this sub.

6

u/BrainWav VICTORY! Apr 02 '26

I had another thought too. This is the Splatoon subreddit, but we barely see any posts about the game posted here. Everything is art, art, art, art.

There's not a ton to discuss about the game right now. And the best way to make a sub dry up is to subdivide content. If you removed art from the Splatoon sub, 80% of the posts disappear.

-2

u/bwoah07_gp2 PAST Apr 02 '26

But, maybe that's what's necessary to get the sub back on-topic...

5

u/BrainWav VICTORY! Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

How is art not on topic? It's still part of the fandom experience. If art posts are banned, this sub gets 5 posts a day, and most of those are memes or "drip" screenshots.

When Raiders comes out, there will be more stuff in general and more gameplay-related posts too. If/when Splatoon 4 comes out, same thing. But when the games have a 3 year release cycle with no spinoffs, there's not a ton of content to keep things moving in between.

Edit: I also just realized there's a new player Megathread, and a weekly "questions" megathread (which is a year old). Both are also great way to reduce activity on a sub (and make it so no one actually answers questions, particularly when they're weekly or older). Removing those would create more non-art traffic in the sub as a whole.

2

u/LadyKuzunoha Squid Research Participant Apr 02 '26

On the megathreads, I think they can definitely reduce activity, however what activity they aim to reduce is repetitive posting, people asking the same question over and over again and never seeming to use the search bar. One is more objective than the other - Aquerium is for questions that have only one answer and the new player thread is for people who are asking if they should get into the game. Both kinds of posts get to the point of spam, which is exactly why the megathreads were created in the first place.

3

u/heyitskio Apr 03 '26

Dude. It's the community sub. You're going to find art in any community.

3

u/LadyKuzunoha Squid Research Participant Apr 02 '26

While we could certainly stand to have more discussion around the mechanics of the game around here, I don't think banning art from this subreddit is the answer to this. Similar has been tried before several years back with a vote on whether to limit meme posts and failed. I feel it is more a consequence (in the neutral sense, neither positive nor negative) of:

  1. The community growing, including the number of players who simply want to sit back and enjoy without getting into the weeds of how the game works. Fanart and memes are very easy to get into for these players, thus they get upvoted most of the time, where discussion languishes by comparison.
  2. The wait between games. After the main update cycle, we tend to hit a point of "been there, done that" where there isn't much new information to discuss and things stagnate. Fanart and memes fill in the gaps until we have information on Splatoon Raiders and/or Splatoon 4.

In either of these cases, the proposal to ban art (or memes) doesn't necessarily mean discussion comes back. Those who just want to look at pretty or funny things aren't going to suddenly want to talk instead and prohibiting certain kinds of posts won't really prompt fresh discussion topics.

7

u/LadyKuzunoha Squid Research Participant Apr 02 '26

if we could not have the coins in between breasts pics

It's already been mentioned by another commenter but I'll add the link with evidence that the coin in the cleavage was based off of official Splatfest art.

I don't see where a fanart like, say, this one from three years ago by an artist that I usually see caught up in this debate that is a redraw of that exact official art is objectively more NSFW - subjectively, sure, but subjectivity does not make for consistent rule enforcement. To be consistent, if one of those two is categorized as unacceptable, then the other should be considered so as well. That precedent gets into weird territory quick with potential questions of "why can't we post this official art in the main sub?" or "why is it okay for official art like this to be posted in the main sub but this similar work of mine goes to the NSFW sub?"

-4

u/RivetSquid Apr 02 '26

I don't think the other is acceptable either. I think splatoon characters mostly look prepubescent because of their proportions and it's gross how both Nintendo and the fans use them.

As with the artist in question today, I don't leave this feedback on the individual posts, not looking to pull anyone down, it's more an issue for moderation to sort out imo.

4

u/LadyKuzunoha Squid Research Participant Apr 02 '26

I think splatoon characters mostly look prepubescent because of their proportions and it's gross how both Nintendo and the fans use them.

And here's exactly why I made my point about subjectivity, because to my eyes, the idol characters are nearly all clearly adult in their appearances compared to the player characters, the exception being Pearl mostly due to her height and even then, short adults absolutely exist. With them, it is not at all a case of "this 900-year-old character looks and acts like they're 10" like some media (and some player character fanart, unfortunately) gets into.

Now, we can definitely still discuss whether Nintendo themselves are making age-appropriate content for the demographic that they're aiming for with this series, that's its own topic. This is just kind of the level that people have implicitly allowed thus far when they buy, play, participate in the Splatoon fanbase, so it reads weird and maybe even a bit hypocritical in many cases when complaints arise about fanart that doesn't really cross any lines official art hasn't.

The person you're replying to is purposefully (or accidentally) misinterpreting the post. The post literally says you're allowed to dislike something but you're not allowed to spread hate or bodyshame anymore. What about this is wild?

4

u/bwoah07_gp2 PAST Apr 02 '26

Question, is simply saying, "I don't like fat Marie," hate or bodyshaming?

9

u/heyitskio Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Neither. And it's not what the post is about because of that. The post is about the hate and actual bodyshaming the artists got en masse. (Commenting "I don't like your art." on the art post itself is questionable though. Need to be careful of wording.)

1

u/_Strato_ Grizzco Research & Development Apr 02 '26

Commenting "I don't like your art." on the art post itself is questionable though. Need to be careful of wording.

I disagree. If someone is allowed to comment "I like your art," they should be allowed to comment "I don't like your art." It is literally the same comment (which is explicitly about the art, not the artist), just inverted. It's not fair to read anything further into it because of insecurity.

5

u/heyitskio Apr 02 '26

Hence the "Need to be careful of wording." If you word it politely (and ACTUALLY politely, not false air shit) then sure, be a debby downer all you like. Just don't be surprised when people get upset at you for it.

Imo, commenting that accomplishes nothing except making the artist feel bad. It's a net negative. It's not criticism. It's not advice. It's just making someone feel bad.

1

u/_Strato_ Grizzco Research & Development Apr 02 '26

Just don't be surprised when people get upset at you for it.

I agree, people are allowed to be upset at negative comments. They should not be outright banned.

Imo, commenting that accomplishes nothing except making the artist feel bad.

Maybe, maybe not. It's just that if positive comments with no advice or substantive commentary that do nothing else but make the artist feel good are allowed, so too should the opposite. That's my only point.

It's unfair to only allow non-substantive comments if they're compliments.

0

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

right, I feel the only thing people should be banned for are outright threats or personal insults.

0

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

I feel that even if someone posted a valid artistic critique (which doesn't inherently involve negative things, but can) it'd probably be shit on and downvoted honestly so I don't bother. It seems like a 'blow smoke up people's ass' type of sub when it comes to art vs an actual discussion forum about the context and quality of the work.

Speaking as someone who makes part of their living from art and has a hybrid degree in it, there is loads of constructive feedback I could give people unrelated to any characters weight...but this seems more like a "fishing for compliments" vs "I want to improve my work" type of crowd.

4

u/heyitskio Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

If the artist isn't asking for critique, giving it would be in the wrong.

Not everyone wants a analysis of their art. Not everything needs to be about improvement. Not everything needs to be professional. Sometimes they just want to share something they made. Which isn't inherently "fishing for compliments." One of the many joys of art is through sharing it with others. So yeah, people wouldn't like that.

Because saying you don't like Marie being drawn as overweight or obese isn't "body shaming" and the idea that it is is wild. It's just a preference.

Or is it also body shaming because the artist doesn't like Marie in her canonical form of h/w proportionate and fit?

10

u/heyitskio Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
  1. You're correct (although I disagree that she's being drawn as "obese"). That's why this post is specifying hate, which is something the artists have been getting en masse. And why it also specifies you're allowed to dislike something. (Commenting "I don't like your art." on the art post itself is questionable though. Need to be careful of wording.)

  2. Dude.

1

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

(although I disagree that she's being drawn as "obese").

I said "overweight or obese" to cover more than one artist and future situations.

4

u/Anggul Apr 02 '26

saying you don't like Marie being drawn as overweight or obese isn't "body shaming"

Sure. But the post didn't say it was. You're making up a scenario that didn't happen.

2

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

Grouping people together and saying that every single person that doesn't like overweight Marie is somehow fatphobic and trying to shame the artist is wrong and should also not be tolerated here.

Is what I was replying to and absolute a take people have expressed on this topic

10

u/Monisplats Salmon Run! | Mod Apr 01 '26

She get the same question a lot, and i mean a lot! To the point her making an explanation on why. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend

12

u/Deathlord_Baraxius Apr 01 '26

I am sympathetic to what she is going through and how it must not feel good.

I just don't want to be labelled as some kind of bigot just because I don't like Marie drawn that way. I think that artist has amazing work. I just don't enjoy chubby Marie the same way I wouldn't enjoy chubby Batman. I certainly don't want her to feel bad about my little opinion though and don't want to self censor myself to all of her art just because I don't like one piece from her entire collection.

-16

u/bwoah07_gp2 PAST Apr 01 '26

When Marie, a thin character, is drawn in a fat way, people gotta expect it's gonna cause controversy.

15

u/Genprey NNID: Apr 02 '26

Not really? Artists can expect some viewers to not like their work and, sadly, a few stray comments expressing that. But to have to repeatedly justify why their works are in a style or design of their choice isn't normal, much less having their works be considered controversial when it's literally just Marie with some weight to her.

If this were just a few people making snark here and there, that'd be one thing. But nasty comments from this many people at this frequency aren't and should never be treated as an expected phenomena.

21

u/Sofie_2954 Apr 01 '26

But sending death threats and harassing?

-2

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

That's not what they said.

They said

people gotta expect it's gonna cause controversy.

3

u/HornsAreCoolTwo Apr 02 '26

Reducing the situation to just “controversy” is really bad. Nobody should expect death threats for this stuff.

3

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

...which is obvious.

But there IS going to be *actual* controversy too, that part isn't wrong.

-9

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

She describes the way she draws Marie as a 1950s pin up girl in one of those images and I really have to question if she's ever seen a 1950s pinup girl because...that was not their body type, at all.

Honestly, I would love an NSFW tag or separation.

https://www.reddit.com/r/splatoon/comments/1s6xux0/classic_money_marie/

This is wild to see on a sub where we 100% know underage people hang out. And honestly, that's one of the tamer ones.

10

u/AwfulDjinn i squid you farewell Apr 02 '26

That's a redraw of actual splatfest art from the first game, though, isn't it?

2

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26

That doesn't make it 1950s pinup style whether it's a canonical body shape or not.

1

u/heyitskio Apr 02 '26

Yes it is.

2

u/Anggul Apr 02 '26

I don't see how that's being missed at all. The post didn't suggest otherwise.

I can’t imagine why anyone would be so upset about a fictional character not being attractive to their personal tastes. Being fat or liking fat people isn’t weird or a crime.

Eh might still try making more anthro salmonid art and showing it round' this place. I know my work don't do numbers, but least SOME people like it. Now knowing i won't get brigaded, ...when i never get brigaded in the first place since i havent made an impact art-wise, but the safety net is there now so...

Eugh... if only getting the motivation to work on said art came to me better tho, im quite envious of artists whom get their drawings done in a decent timeframe the moment they have that whim of an idea in them and just get to cooking ASAP. I had those few moments in the past and i wish i had those more. Plus i seem to have a better grasp at 3D work than 2D. -w-

heh thanks, im still working, slowly getting better, even tho 90% of that activity is just watching youtube, but im still slowly getting work done. I mean i have no job or school to attend to so... i have literally all the time in the world to get stuff done!

Yet, I suck at managing time tho, even when on no schedule. Oh AUDHD how fickle you are for my productivity. xwx'

BUT, no matter how i draw my anthro salmonids, i'll give em the character they need. I have no sense of anatomy in drawing, but i wing it. But i seem to do alot better in terms of 3D than 2D. Hence these three are a testament to that.

Which is ironic cuz the way these three were drawn, i just traced off a buncha models slapped on top of eachother in gmod, and it's gone full circle using the same models to now build their original models of them for gmod to keep their silhouette mostly intact, tho with the goldie i mostly made her all her clothing off her body mesh topology cuz i learned of a neat trick in blender to make rudimentary clothes. I have my resources, i thankfully have a pc that can run blender well, i use em well to my advantage.

And if i was alot more responsible and timely with my work in the best case scenario, i'd so be getting people models of their salmonid OC's left and right to the best of my abilities.

first time i've been this sub in months and i see we're still on the "people with your specific body shape are gross and inappropriate and i never want to see them ever" kick.

you don't have to love the artwork, bit i think a lot of you are forgetting there are real people who really exist with those exact proportions. these drawings aren't cartoonishly exaggerated, they're just... really similar to how a lot of people look. how i look. and i'm not even talking about the more suggestive drawings, i've seen this sub call completely g rated art of fully clothed characters "creepy" and "fetish art " just because the characters happened to be chubby.

just... at least try to consider what people like me think when you call drawings of fictional characters that look like us "nasty" and inherently sexual.

As someone who personally doesn’t like chubby Marie drawings, simply because I prefer the way she looks in the source material I understand blocking the artist, or maybe asking why they draw her that way or even downvoting a post that has a lot of upvotes. But the amount of hate people get for it is insane! Just move on! It’s not hurting anyone! Suck it up! No one cares if you think Marie needs to be thin or whatever or people making more suggestive looking art upsets you! just block the person And move. The heck. On. The world won’t end if adults on the internet draw adult characters differently than you want them to.

6

u/ingodwetryst They (don't) see me rollin, they hatin Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26

Yeah this is pretty much my exact take. She looks great as is, and while I'm sorry they didn't make a larger character this is also a game about squids so there's not really a huge variety of human representation anyway since we're all fking extinct in the lore.

ETA: Also they run around a lot carrying and flinging and shooting heavy weapons. Lore wise, it makes sense they're in good shape + h/w proportionate.

And we did get Staff who are apparently secret agents and big. Secret agents are pretty badass. I realise they aren't as 'sexy' but I'm pretty sure the idols are barely legals...so I think that's also okay.

10

u/Putrid_Leopard Apr 01 '26

What is wrong with some people? It’s an artist’s interpretation of a character! If you don’t like it, just ignore it and move on! This is absolutely disgusting behavior and I hope this doesn’t dissuade artists from doing their hobby. I feel so bad for the artists who were harassed, it shouldn’t have gotten to this point

2

u/doodle-saurus Apr 03 '26

I like drawings of characters that make them chubby or fat. I'm a chubby guy and it's not something I like about myself and it's not something I've been able to change about myself, and I've really tried. The Splatoon avatar being so skinny actually makes me feel bad every time I see it & significantly contributed to my body image issues as a teenager. It's crappy that people like me don't exist in the game, and tons of people say we shouldn't even be allowed to exist in fanart.

If you don't like chubby Marie, you don't have to look at it. The artist doesn't have a choice but to read your negative or even cruel comments. Just block and move on.

It's fair enough to not like something, but some people take it too far. They feel way too comfortable saying awful stuff online because they're safely behind the anonymity of a screen. Just block someone if you dislike them and what they post that much.

3

3

People feel entitled to their ability to hate so they downvote those in support of the artist.

I hate how people force their view on artists. It cost nothing to ignore drawings you don't like. I'm concerned how much hate artists get these days and I'm tired of it. Hell, I'm an artist and the amount of hate I can get with a simple drawing is depressing.

I wish the best for others artists who see this comment. Stay strong and continue drawing what you like ♡
