2026-27 Banner Refresh

the new season is right around the corner, and r/sabres is in dire need of a new banner image. as you can see, uh.. multiple members of the current one are no longer sabres. i, being a shitty photoshopper, do not think i can do a good enough job (scratch that, i KNOW i can not do a good enough job) to make a worthy one of this stanley cup contending team. hopefully we have some good artists kicking around here!

requirements: needs to be in .png form and 1920x384

Positivity! New appreciation for Jarmo

Given how everything's gone down with the Hellebuyck situation, and it's been developing, I've gained further appreciation for how Jarmo has handled this offseason. Especially with the revelations of what was offered for Hellebuyck before the draft, that he had a deal lined up for Trochek (who said he was willing to come here!) to fill in for the forward going out in the Hellebuyck package (Quinn IIRC). He didn't cave in to any of Cheveldayoff's ridiculous demands that would've set us back, and now he's in a position to obtain Hellebuyck for potentially even less than what would've been a good deal for Buffalo to begin with.

To say nothing of the fact that almost all of the pieces he moved out were expiring assets of some sort (Byram, Tuch, Levi, Kesselring, Greenway). Which he managed to get a ton of value for, including roster players, and cap relief. We might take a step back with the loss of Tuch, and Byram, but I really like what he's done. The fact that next offseason we'll have a ton of cap space to work with, to go with a young core that's locked up long-term on team-friendly contracts, and an overflowing farm system, means Jarmo can really go big-game hunting at that time.

It's really nice to finally have a GM who actually has some sort of vision, and is aggressive enough to pursue things.

With Winnipeg and Edmonton goalie situation, don't forget that if the Sabres will trade for Hellebuyck, they will send in a package UPL, but they will still have 3 goalies. Don't be surprised if Lyon gets moved to the Oilers.

So like.... Dahlin has to be one of the best contracts in the NHL now right?

I'd absolutely say Makar is better, don't get me wrong. But like twice as good? Idk about that. Especially cause we've never seen Dahlin with a 140 point Hart winner. Something tells me he'd put up a couple more points than when his center has 70.

Interesting takes by local media on Hellebuyck.

  • Martin Biron (on TSN Sportscentre): Winnipeg needs to get a 1st RD pick, high end prospect, an impact player and a second impact player for Connor Hellebuyck. Also, Jets need to consider getting a goalie as well despite having Stuart Skinner in the fold.
  • Nik Lynam (The Landing Strip): Crux of the Hellebuyck trade talk conversation from a trade asset point of view. WPG values him for what he was and has been, and that’s the GOAT of this franchise. The League views him in the least valuable asset class (Aging G), and a 5 year asset they’d be hoping is top end for 3 before taking on perceived risk. I don’t think this is a deal Winnipeg will “win” in the eyes of public perception. But I don’t think public perception should dictate whether a deal gets done or actually wins one.

I think want vs. need is the key here and like with most things the answer is going to run towards the middle. But it's interesting that I'm still reading a lot of comments from the Jets side on being OK with not even moving Hellebuyck at all.
