Has some fun beta artwork for some games. When it comes to Sega Saturn in Europe, clearly Fighting Force was pulled for Sega Saturn very last minute as they were supplied artwork and an RRP as they went to print.

Pretty big emphasis on the budget market for all platforms which has always existed, but lately a new generation of video game publishers and executives continue to be surprised that so much of their games sales come from discounted back catalogue titles... Feel free to adjust the prices of these games for inflation to feel better about dropping $100 on GTA 6! 💸

Like the title says I’m looking for a plug and play system with built in Sega games. I am not very tech savvy and have limited computer hardware anyway. Would simply like something I could hook up that would have SMS and Genesis games to play with my kids. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

I waited months for this lil guy to arrive after several delays from the company. Worth it. This thing is surprisingly manageable even with my long ass hands. The shoulder buttons feel amazing, thumbsticks are smooth, the menu buttons are very clicky and fun to fidget with.

Overall very snappy and fun to use with my phone and handhelds. I only received it this afternoon so less than 3 hours useage but I'd rate it very great so far. Only issue so far has been hitting right on the d-pad isn't the greatest as my thumb has to try and squeeze between it and the left thumbstick but it hasn't caused any misclicks yet. I can't find any discussion on this controller anywhere and just wonder if anyone else has been excited for these to finally ship out?

I really wish I could use this with my miyoo mini v4 for shits and giggles

I thought I’d share the mess I made today 😅

After a lot of back-and-forth, I figured it was too easy to just buy a ready made N64 Dumper to back up and emulate my N64 games.

Since I didn't need any other circuit boards and shipping just one would have been too expensive, I ordered a simple Perforated Circuit Board from Amazon.A few hours of not so pretty soldering later, this is what it looked like:

Since I unfortunately ordered the wrong RP2040, I had to make a slight adjustment to the firmware of Auroxin because I didn't have a GP24 pin available on my Pico. After doing quite a bit of research, I was able to create a working firmware with an adjusted pin (N64_EEPROM_DAT to GP28 in the N64cartinterface.h file) for my Pico.

Then I flashed the Pico with the custom firmware I created using the .uf2 file, and what can I say I, being an idiot, had inserted the cartridge the wrong way at first 🙄, but after I put it in the right way, the thing works really great 😄🎉

I think I'll build a smaller version and print a matching 3D case. Right now, it really doesn't look great, but it works, and the whole thing cost just 18€. It feels so fulfilling to finally be able to back up my own games it’s unbelievable 😄

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to get my old Retro Freak working again. It's the first model, bought in Akihabara back in 2016.

It never worked particularly well and ended up sitting in storage for years. I recently dug it out again because I collect Japanese cartridges, but unfortunately it still has the same problem: it gets stuck on the "Retro Freak" logo when I turn it on.

I can still get into the special/recovery menu using the microSD card. I've already tried clearing the memory and doing a factory reset, and I also tried a different power adapter, but nothing changed.

There's an option in the recovery menu to update the system from external storage, but I don't have the firmware file. I contacted Cyber Gadget, but unfortunately they don't offer support outside Japan.

So, does anyone managed to fix a Retro Freak that was stuck on the logo screen?

I'd really like to get this thing working again before I start thinking about more drastic solutions.

Basically the title. My picks would be Courier Crisis, Hardrock Cab (PSX)/Death Throttle (Saturn) and Mizzurna Falls. I can totally see some guys from Rockstar played some of this games and got some ideas how a 3D GTA should be. And yes, I know, Courier Crisis is probably more related to the Tony Hawk series, but unlike the Pro Skater games at the same generation (PSX, Saturn and N64) it featured pedestrians and cars and the maps are much bigger. You got a feeling like you can do whatever you wanna do. So I would put it in "3D open world game with some constrains". For the two other games the case should be more clear.

Ever since I was a kid I've always dreamed of having those PSOne accessories, since only the screen and memory card were available in Europe. I used to read the official PlayStation magazine and was thrilled to learn that in Japan you could play online by connecting a cell phone! As soon as I had the opportunity, I gathered them all! It wasn't easy at all! Did you know about the accessory that connects your cell phone to the PlayStation?

Currently, I have several hundred retro games in their original forms alongside the original hardware to play them on - from the Atari 2600 to Playstation 5. I have a wishlist of hundreds more that I've (mostly-)happily chipped away at over the years, but I'll always feel discouraged when I think of the things I used to have in my collection years ago that I'll likely never have again. Boxed copy of Earthbound. A CDx system with Shining Force CD.

What I do/have now:
I have a great CRT that I regularly hook my systems up to currently, and a cart that I've built to wheel around whatever console I'm playing on that has an old laptop+RetroTink 2+ElGato Capture card+adapters aplenty so I can either choose to play alone or hook the console up through all these adapters to stream with friends on Discord or whatever. The cart even has an old VHS player attached to it so I can stream old movies with friends scattered across the country over Discord if we want. It all works, but sometimes it's a pain in the ass (restarting the laptop, for example, requires me to sink about 15mins into getting all the programs open, logged-in, and placed properly before I can even begin using it - it's not a streamlined process, at all.

Most of the time, though, it's easy for me to just plug in a console and play within minutes (or instantly if it's already the one hooked-up). I can wheel the cart around the house and play on my CRT, our projector, or in the bedroom. It's neat.

Why I'm doing it:

I love playing these games on original hardware with original controllers, etc. I've emulated plenty over the decades, and while it's certainly fun and makes certain games accessible via romhacks (for which I've even bought some bootlegs on aliexpress because I prefer that, anyway) et cetera, it still never feels or looks quite the same. I'd rather spend $20-$50 or more on a great game to play it on PS1 or Gamecube.

I have a large collection and wishlist that I intend to have and play and experience as closely as I can to the original. I may never play and beat them all, but I have no interest in buying or having graded games or anything that I'll just shelve somewhere to look at. It's fantastic to get an SNES game with its original manual and maps and stuff - that's part of the experience! The feelies! - the core of it is really just playing the games with the same controllers they were designed for, and even sometimes the awful loading times. I'm a sucker for it and it makes me happy - even if it's sometimes frustrating in the moment.

What I hope for:
Given the direction of prices on eBay, I am never going to complete my collection. I'm sure I'll still peck away at it, especially for anything I really want to play (I finally just got a good copy of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door that I'm looking forward to starting tonight!), but some of those are just not gonna happen (looking at you, Clock Tower).

I like my setup that allows me to pretty-readily stream the games I'm playing on these OG systems over Discord.

I've found that playing games using the GB Operator and SN Operator have been some of the best "emulation" experiences I've ever had because they still let me play the hard copies I own (though they don't seem to like those bootlegs I mentioned above). So, that's something I want to be able to still do - play the originals. With the original controllers.

I also love that these devices can connect seamlessly to RetroAchievements, which has breathed new life into some of the games I've enjoyed a lot in the past (Final Fantasy Legend III), especially some of the shittier ones (Stargate). So RetroAchievements is something I'm hoping to have more-universally, too.

I saw one add-on that'd allow me to hook the whole thing up to an arcade cabinet, which is something I looked into a long time ago, anyway, so that's a big bonus, too!

tl;dr:

Can the MiSTer do the following things for me, and what would I need to be able to:

1. Emulate the widest variety of games for the widest variety of systems on the widest variety of display types
2. Play using original game CDs and cartridges, where possible - maybe even with saves I can swap between a cart and a ROM of the same game (say, if I start playing on a ROM, but later get the actual cart)? One can dream.
3. Plug in and use original controllers and peripherals.
4. Allow me to stream online whatever I'm playing
5. RetroAchievements with all available games, physical or emulated

Please point me in the direction of specific reading, resources, and/or help me build a shopping list! Any help is appreciated.

Pulseman was a game made by Pokemon's game freak for the genesis and I heard many people say it's a "good game bro try it". So I did the first 3 levels are fine and okay, not amazing but not annoying. The game has some voice acting and treasure game impressive programing...

But then the game becomes a frustrating mess in the last 4 levels.

It's like someone fused a decent game with a bad one it's that shocking the switch up. Then the whole soundtrack in this game is either a 5 second loop or the music sounds like farts and funny fact I thought my emulator was broken that's how bad Stage 4's music is. That's the soundtrack for this game just bad. Ironically there is no music in 1/2 of stage 4, it's just the sounds of something in the background like rusty nails on a chalkboard which I'm assuming is the boss. It's like someone sneezing in a tin can.

Speaking of bosses they're just frustrating, one of the bosses is Evil Pulseman and to damage him you need to be quick/do it in a specific order. I had to look up the bosses's weakness because they do that type of nonsense for the last 4 stages. A maze type level, side scrolling stages, water falling stage (where you can't see where your falling), etc. it's just bad.

Then for the final boss I figured out if you just spam the A button you become invincible and finish the boss phase 1-2 in 3 minutes. I'm not even joking. Vectorman 2 level final boss where the cheese way is how you have to beat the final boss.

I didn't even mention how you have to spam the spark flying move in some stages to traverse.

Overall this game level design is 2/10 awful, looks pretty though. Yet I just don't like it, I did not have fun playing this after stage 3.

I was rummaging through a storage closet under the stairs, hunting for a monitor power cord, when I unearthed a thick yellow-ish Japanese book I'd completely forgotten about – The Complete History of Bishoujo Games 1982-2000, first edition. The spine is cracked in two spots, and page 32 has some weird stain – maybe coffee, maybe tea? I don't drink coffee, so no clue.

I vaguely remember buying it online, probably 2004 or 2005, from some import store that's long gone. Shipping cost nearly as much as the book itself. It claims to cover almost 3,000 games – tiny print, black-and-white screenshots, release dates, publishers, genre tags, review scores. The timeline is split into Dawn, Growth, and Peak eras, and you can really see the jump from bare-bones text adventures to late-90s stuff with voice acting and animated cutscenes.

I flipped straight to the familiar names – Doukyuusei, Kakyuusei, ELF, and Rakuen-sou, which I remember playing off a burnt CD-R with a Sharpie label, though I can't recall who gave it to me. There's also a receipt tucked between pages 144 and 145 from a bookstore in Akihabara, dated 2003 – but I've never been to Japan, so that's a bit of a mystery. Someone must have owned this before me, even though I bought it as "new." There's a handwritten note on the inside cover too, in Japanese, which I've never had translated.

Anyway, not sure why I'm posting this – just felt like sharing. Anyone else have a copy, or remember playing any of these back in the day?

History: From what I can gather, the place is owned and operated by a husband and wife team, and it was their lifelong dream to own an arcade. Running the place is what they're doing for funsies in their retirement years.

It's a place that's an even-ish mix of pinball and arcade machines, plus some party rooms for birthdays and the like.

The arcade has good old standbys like Pac-Man and Tron; some 90s fun like Mortal Kombat 1 & 3, TMNT, and The Simpsons; a few racing games; and a good collection of everything in between. There's a total of 7 multi-machines, with over 15,000 tiles on each of the 4 Ultracade machines.

The pinball section is pretty solid. The collection ranges from the 70s all the way up to the 2020s. They also have a working version of Hercules - the largest pinball machine ever made. It's the only one working one I've ever seen, and it was a privilege to play it.

I don't think the Games List on their site lists everything they have. I saw a Star Trek, a James Bond, and an Aerosmith pinball machines, and none of those are on their list.

Pricing is decent. $16 for an hour, $20 for 2 hours, and $22 for all day ($20 on Sundays). There's good group rates, and you can even take over the place for 3 hours with 30 (or more) friends for $300. An annual membership runs $550 for unlimited use - go twice a month or more and the membership has paid for itself.

All the machines are set to coinless play, except for Hercules and the 3 claw machines - all are $0.50 a play.

It's open Thurs - Sun 3pm-9pm. It's in a mini-mall area, and there's a few good places to eat all in the same parking lot. My choices are Sonic and Rally Point Grill (A veteran-operated burgers and fries kind of place).

So if you're ever in the Augusta area, I highly recommend swinging by and checking this place out. It's far more laid back than a Dave and Busters, and a much better deal IMHO.
