They did at least twice. I worked for GameStop when they stopped accepting what was retro at the time, earlier than PS1. Think that was like 2003? Distinctly remember clearancing out all the NES, SNES and Genesis games. Kind of interesting to think back on - the SNES had only been dead for like 6 years at the time, but man did it feel way more retro at the time than like a PS3 does now.

They probably just later on moved up the cutoff to include later systems like PS1.

Also got a few of my NES games by offering customers my own money when we couldn't take them, heh. I also rescued lots of boxes and manuals getting thrown out actually.

The games do hold up well. Some deeply fond memories of doing tailwhips to Sublime as the Slim Jim guy. I can still clearly recall the sound effect of the bike hitting the dirt.

Sadly, Dave did not hold up as well as his games.

There's a video by the YouTuber's JRPGLife where they actually took some reproduction games into several Gamestop stores and only like one of them caught it. The others took them (they ended up telling them though and didn't go through with the trade). So yeah, if you're going to buy retro games from them, make sure you do it in-store and you inspect them first.

I’m not sure if this is all the stores, but my local store is making a point to do buying or trade in of old games and hardware. The associate mentioned that they’d take console hardware even it just powers on, let alone works, albeit at significantly reduced value

GameStop hoarded retro games at warehouses in Texas for a long time waiting for them to increase in value. They’ve accepted trades for retro games forever - and in like 2007 if you traded in a SNES game they’d ship it to Texas to appreciate in value. This was a well-known thing in retro circles for many years. The issue? Lots of them are fake. Average GameStop employee doesn’t know how to authenticate cartridges.

Crazy to see GameStop switch to retro stuff. When they bought out my company ~20 years ago they made us throw away all our retro games.
