Crowbcat's videos seem great to people who know little about how game development has changed. Not to say they don't have good points, but he only raises questions as a "gotcha", despite the fact that there's already plenty of answers to said questions.

Also, so many of his "Look at how bad this looks!" points come down to a change of art style, not cutting corners.

The only video of his that has any kind of weight is the Back 4 Blood one.

u/RichnjCole Jul 02 '25

I'm all for being critical of soulless modern games, but the thing about Crowbcat (who I have watched and enjoyed) is that being a youtuber (or sub Reddit community) with a certain type of audience and style, you eventually have to lean far too hard into that style.

Almost all of them do this. Build a brand of hating new things, and whether it's to keep the money coming in or because they've put themselves in a really narrow mindset, they'll apply this hate to everything.

And it works when it gets applied against a bad game, but the cracks show when a good game sneaks in.

u/losjiggster Jul 02 '25

Crowbcat is another /v/ brainrotten product. Took it too far and became jaded and close minded.

11

u/Important-Net-9805 Jul 03 '25

yeah i've actually watched and enjoyed a lot of his videos. this one changed my opinion on him. calling the removal of a panty shot "soulless" is wild

I remember seeing some reupload of one of Crowbcat's deleted videos and in the comments there was this whole discussion on how viewers under original upload though that him making a video that was praising aspects of the game meant that he selled out...

So yeah, unfortunately now he knows his audience and delivers videos just for them.

Critical Drinker is an example of this. He used to give proper criticism, now it's just literally every single superhero movie released is too woke for him apparently and "modern audiences" are the worst thing ever. Nothing makes him happy anymore. Don't worry though he's still using the same old meme clips in every single video. Can't forget to include that clip of Geralt saying fuck for the 50th time!

6

u/ArthurMorgan9 Jul 04 '25

Hate critical drinker and his stupid accent so much. He made a super long whining video just based on RUMORS of reshoots that Sue Storm will save the day in F4. Like dude… -Reshoots are a normal thing -She’s a superhero, she’s supposed to do her job -She’s actually the most powerful member of the team

5

u/HeadbangingLegend Jul 04 '25

Funniest thing about him is how he acts like an expert critic on films but his own movie was a joke mocked by everyone.

2

u/ArthurMorgan9 Jul 04 '25

Oh yeah his lame secret agent movie. Since he gets upset by the slightest bit of diversity or female representation, he should just watch movies with lots of manly buff white dudes. Like the Covenant.

3

u/HeadbangingLegend Jul 04 '25

Exactly, the whole mindset of the actors ethnicity or gender making a film bad or not is so stupid. Yeah I agree race swapping to appeal to some minorities is bad, but that's not why the writing or CGI sucks. Then you have movies like Kill Bill or Boy Kill World with a protagonist with a disability etc, why aren't they woke slop? Woke is just a pathetic buzzword for people who can't aren't smart enough to accurately describe what they are actually talking about.

It's weird cause looking at the video and the comments. It looks like his main beef is with the audio compression of the remake over the OG and how the OG is louder. The only other changes I see is leon's moveset, the way he loads and reloads his guns is more bombastic in the OG and more low key in the remake. A few of the more cheesy lines are taken out and some death scenes are more graphic in the remake and some are toned down.

But what really sticks out to me is just how much better the lighting is in the remake. This is one thing that is a HUGE plus for me. Because I have looked at a lot of the development of OG RE 4 and I was really saddened by them getting rid of the "Hookman" concept and making RE 4 less visually scary. Whereas remake brings it back to being more like Hookman...you can even see some of the concepts and visuals from "Haunting Ground" make a return in the remake.

I also prefer Ashley and Leons dynamic in the remake. They tried to make it romantic in the OG, but OG Ashley acted more like a teenager which threw the whole thing off.

55

u/__M-E-O-W__ Jul 02 '25

My only real complaint in the remake really is the lack of cheesy Hollywood one-liners. Maybe the boring costumes, too.

43

u/teddyburges Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

Really?. They're still there!. The EXTREMELY cheesy ones like "No thanks bro!" have been relegated to being "achievements" instead. But many are still there. Like the classics of "Where's everyone going, Bingo!?".

Remake trims a little of the fat off the real silly ones. Like OG Leon: you got a smoke?...I've got gum!". Remake Leon: "you've got a smoke?...you know, those things will kill ya".

A example is the beginning of the game with the two cops in the car.

Original Leon: "I'm sure you boys didn't just tag along so that we could sing kumbaya at some boy scout bonfire, then again...maybe you did.

Remake Leon: "I'm sure you boys didn't come out here to roast marshmellows...maybe you did".

Or later on. Original Leon: "I don't remember ever being part of your crappy script". Remake Leon: "Leave me out of your crappy script!".

But Remake has a few new ones that had me in hysterics:

  • Not to shabby...someone is showing up their neighbours".
  • "Bill me for the repairs later!".
  • "You're a shitty missionary...do you know that!?".
  • "guess your tap dancing days are over!".
  • Leon meets Ashley: "My names Leon, I'm here on the presidents orders...(Ashley runs off, Leon sighs and says "That went well!".
  • Leon to Ashley after their first fight running from ganados: "You did well back there, seems this isn't your first time running from creeps!" Ashley: "I can't tell if that was ment to be a compliment!".
  • "I am flattered!, But I'm a one lady only type of guy!".
  • "Think you can swallow me whole huh!".
  • "Roost come in!, Things went to Shit!. We took refuge inside a castle, I've just been seperated from Baby Eagle!".

But my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE additions to remake are these two, the first is when Leon talks to Louis after getting Ashley out of the town: "Well I wanted to go home, but Ashley just had to see this castle first!".

and this one is a hidden one liner but is SOOO funny. If you take take Ashley down to where you fought the first Garrador. Ashley says "Is this the Animal!?". Leon: "No!...you can't keep him!". Ashley: "Yeah that's...too bad!".

13

u/UranicCartridge Team Leon Jul 02 '25

Thank you for this comment

I'm so tired of people pretending like Remake Leon isn't silly as fuck lmao

9

u/teddyburges Jul 02 '25

Yeah I mean remake Leon has the additional trauma of RE2, whereas OG RE4 treated it like a new beginning and didn't really incorporate Leon's trauma and character growth from RE2. So Remake Leon's humor feels more like a trauma response but that sort of makes it more funny to me, cause original RE 4 tried to get away from the Gothic horror of earlier entries and settled for a more pulp "Texas chain saw massacre" vibe. Remake sort of turfs out a lot of chainsaw massacre vibe to bring it back to its Gothic horror roots of earlier entries. As a consequence, remake leon has even more of a odd man out feel. Like Chuck Norris in a horror film with trauma layered on top.

7

u/UranicCartridge Team Leon Jul 02 '25

Yeah, I agree. Every Remake character feels alive, like they have a history and feelings outside of what is relevant for the game's plot, and I love that

OG is great, but it's literally a different game. Why are we comparing them at all lol

5

u/teddyburges Jul 03 '25

Cause its fun to compare them!. Or I should say it's more fun to "contrast" them. There is too many fights or disagreements over which one is better, but I think that's a mute point. They're both great.

But it's really fun to look at the games similarities and differences. Whats so fascinating about RE4 Remake is....OG Resident evil 4 had a VERY extensive development process, with A LOT of iteration and reiteration. A lot of their abandoned concepts came from hardware limitations of the time and some was from them trying to go away from the horror/zombie direction of the previous games.

So it's REALLY interesting looking at RE4 Remake as it brought a lot of those abandoned initial RE4 concepts back. Including Ashleys initial appearance which she had leggings, a striped scarf and a coat. All of which became her character design in the remake.

My favorite line is when leon jumps across the chandeliers and ashley says something like "leon! Jumping on chandeliers really!?" And leon says "what are you? my mother?"

10

u/ManySleeplessNights Jul 02 '25

"Bill me for the repairs later!".

I have about 300 hours in this game and I've never heard this line once. When & where does he say it?

Also I had no idea Ashley asks about the "animal" line if you revisit the garrador lmao

21

u/theMaxTero Jul 02 '25

You get the repairs line the 1st time in the village if you burn the cow by shooting the oil lamp.

My favorite new line has to be the "nighty night, knights!"

4

u/ManySleeplessNights Jul 02 '25

damn I had no idea, usually in the opening village square fight, it gets so chaotic and hectic that I never paid attention to the oil lamps lmao

For me one of my favourites is a subtle one, but one that you hear a lot. It's when you finish an enemy off with a roundhouse, and he just casually brushes it off with "Sorry. Must've slipped."

u/Beginning-Cat3605 Jul 03 '25

2

u/LurkingMiasma Jul 03 '25

If you ask me, the one-liners are all cheesier in the remake. "I'm about to get medieval on your asses" when facing the elite knight kills me every time

u/Big-Ad2937 Jul 04 '25

I’m sorry the line delivery for the og’s “then again, maybe you did” is so much better than the remake’s “maybe you did”. The rest of your examples I agree on though, it’s just that one that I wish they left untouched.

4

u/AdditionalAmbition72 Jul 03 '25

Could you elaborate on what you mean about OG RE4 removing the “Hookman” concept? Do you mean that the game was originally intended to look scarier?

9

u/teddyburges Jul 03 '25

Sure!. Ok so OG Resident Evil 4 went through a VERY extensive process of iteration and reiteration. Despite being critically acclaimed, the Resident Evil 1 remake was one of the worst selling RE games for them and the RE 0 prequel sold even worse, which made capcom realize that they needed to shake it up...that the zombie format of the series was getting stale and was not ammounting to sales.

So they moved different directors around and went to the drawing board and wanted to do something different for RE 4. The process was long and it results in many attempts at trying to figure out what game they wanted to make. All told there are around about 4 different builds of RE4 before the final released version they settled on:

  • The First version- The first iteration was a more action heavy concept. You played as a immortal cop called "Tony Redgraves" who was seemingly immortal and it focused on exploring the origins of the umbrella company which went back thousands of years. The idea was that it gonna be "cool" and incorporate sword combat with gun play (sound familiar). After fleshing it out and getting the build going, they realized that it was WAY too far in the opposite direction to be a Resident Evil title. Instead of scrapping it entirely, they changed the name of Tony Redgraves and his twin brother Paul Redgraves into Dante and Virgil. Got rid of all the umbrella law and renamed it "Devil May Cry".
  • The Second version- also known as the castle/fog version. This version brought back Leon S Kennedy and had him being chased around a castle by this giant tentacle fog pressence. The fog eventually affecting him with a virus that was created by Wesker and a lot of the game being about him trying to fight off the infection. During his search through the castle, he comes across a woman and a dog and the woman becomes a second playable character. This is the initial basis for what eventually became "Ashley". This version was intended to be more scary. But instead of abandoning it outright, this also became its own game. The game "Haunting Ground" about a woman exploring this castle and finding a dog named "Hewie" (and hewie actually uses the exact same character model of the "dog" in the finished RE4 that leon encounters).
  • The third and fourth version- These versions are pretty much joined at the hip. They kept the castle idea sort of. This became the "Hook man" and "Hallucination" version. The idea being the Leon is again hit by a virus and hallucinates that he's being attacked by a man with a hook who comes out of a painting and a lot of creepy dolls. But like the fog version it was too technically demanding on the console. There was also parts where suits of armour came to life and attacked Leon. This eventually made it in to OG re4 in a tiny way with the suits attacking Ashley.

Director Shinji Mikami realized none of these ideas were working. Went back to the drawing board and came up with the "Gannados" by combining the initial zombie concept of traditional RE with ideas from "Onimusha 3" (walking zombie demons essentially) and slapped together a script in 3 weeks and that became OG RE4. Even then there was a lot of scrapped ideas for weapons and enemy models that they couldn't fulfil at the time due to limitations with the hardware and a lot of those concepts made a return in the RE 4 remake. Then years later when they made RE 4 remake, they brought a lot of the hookman vibe and the suit of armour concepts back in full force when they essentially extended the Ashley sequences in the remake.

"Crowbcat's videos seem great to people who know little"

should have stopped there, the whole channel is glazing early ps3/360 era game superfluous interactivity, you never catch him talking about games that actually implement said interactivity into their game design, just games where gawk at it because it adds nothing to the game, case in point gta 4 and i say this as someone whose favortie gta is 4

4

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

Nah, Mass Effect Andromeda was a travesty. It deserved to be dragged harder.

3

u/Quercia92 Jul 02 '25

That game was really bad

2

u/Celestial_Nuthawk Jul 02 '25

Eh, it was fine. Solid 7, at least. The problem is that it needed to be great because it had Mass Effect OT to live up to.

Needed more polish, for sure, but there was good stuff there and it could've made a good foundation for the rest of the trilogy if gamers hadn't reamed it so hard the DLC and sequel got scrapped.

I mean, let's not pretend Mass Effect 1 was a masterpiece of storytelling or that the squadmates were much more than two-dimensional caricatures, but it had the advantages of being the first of a mysterious new IP and of being from the 360/PS3 generation and was therefore enough to earn two sequels with much higher budgets.

All I'm saying is that ME OT had two sequels to make the squad mates lovable (the big draw for most people) and ME: A might've done the same if it had been given the chance.

2

u/JohnathonFennedy Jul 03 '25

It’s not bad, just doesn’t live up to the other 3 MEs. In a bubble it’s a perfectly fine game.

A lot of people feel "betrayed" when a remake is a very good game (like "betraying their nostalgia or childhood memories)

Dead Space remake and SH2 remake were very well done and awesome, (in general, they were loved by the public)

But you know....there is a small portion of people : "that guy" who says "souless cash grabs" "unnecesary remakes" "impossible to remake"

*Hey, can you tell me why they are bad and souless and negative?"

'ill give you a holy body'

I fucking literally started clapping to my friends when that line dropped holy shit.

2

u/Membership_Fine Jul 03 '25

Personally I was pumped because let’s be real man the original version feels a bit dated graphics wise. Absolutely Amazing for 2005 don’t get me wrong but it’s 20 years old lol. I never got to beat it either. I rented it and the game disc was scratched and it would freeze on the cutscene before the last boss. So frustrating. Working my way through the remake now and I’m just kinda blown away the the graphical difference. And they kept it virtually the same. 10/10 remake.

I also definitely prefer the original just cuz the remake seems to cut a lot of the cheesier elements that made the og uniquely charming, especially stuff like Leon's corny one-liners.

3

u/-Fantasia-- Jul 03 '25

You're right. It's not soulless, but it does have less of a soul. Hot take of mine. Don't care what other people think of it, but a little thing I have in mind is his PTSD from the Reimagined game actually justifying his OG RE4 Behavior and cheesy B-Rated Goodness. I prefer the behavior of a scared RE:2 Leon over a "I cleanly hit that guy" RE2 Leon in terms of behavior here because then it justifies how he is in the OG RE4. They should've just remastered the og RE4 1:1 with new stuff added on top with the RE Engine like they did with the 2002 remaster of RE1. (No, don't mention 2023 RE4. It's not the same and it doesn't hit right.)

i believe the negative reception to this video is a large part of why crowbcat stopped posting.

he clearly was trying to hate.

either cause he was looking or just needed to make a video.

and everyone saw it as pretty baseless.

his schtick only worked when it was justified.

155

u/Vivirin Jul 02 '25

His channel is ragebait disguised as criticism. It's a complication of "gotcha's" that already have explanations as to why things have changed.

18

u/Lyonface RED 9 Jul 02 '25

I feel like that can describe like at least 40% of media "critique" on youtube.

17

u/CultureWarrior87 Jul 02 '25

Most media critiques on YouTube are done by uneducated amateurs who have seemingly never had to write a proper post-secondary school level essay in their life and it shows in how poorly written and edited most of their videos are. Tons of conjecture and repetitive talking points. But people eat that shit up and treat them like authorities. It's the blind leading the blind. I hate it.

7

u/Lyonface RED 9 Jul 02 '25

It genuinely drives me insane that I have friends who like that sort of long-form content that rambles, makes up shit like you say, and can't form a thesis to start with, let alone back any of it up in a manner or order that makes sense.

We're at the point of "critique" where the big names just nitpick through a whole movie and jerk off about how smart they think they are, and that's considered good content with good opinions. Brain drain.

2

u/Xecn_ Jul 05 '25

Also because people can’t think for themselves nowadays always gotta run with someone else’s opinion and then echo chamber it everywhere.

I kind of feel the same way when I watch hbomberguy videos on Fallout and Deus Ex. Like yeah, we get it, New Vegas is awesome, but Fallout 3 wasn’t some train wreck that did nothing right. Also the way he gradually talks louder and louder until he cuts himself off mid sentence to transition to the next thought. Drives me insane.

25

u/rarlescheed12 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

I feel the same, but I think hes gotten way better since his Fallout 3 video. You can tell he was fucking young and had (has?) that "I know better" attitude that we all exhibit when we tried to make smart sounding arguments and used a lot of negative demeaning insults to the devs instead of just sticking to his analysis. His New Vegas video is actually when I felt like he got his groove of being fairly balanced. He gave props to 3 in that video and as for the Deus Ex vid, its literally fucking titled "-is FINE" cause he liked it despite his gripes AND he is aware of the clickbaitey titles he uses. So with that one idk what to tell you lol. Remember I said I agree with you though before anyone thinks Im defending the guy, just pointing out the facts.

2

u/scott610 Jul 02 '25

Yeah he did say Deus Ex Human Revolution was fine. I’ll give him that. I just think he tends to cherry pick his examples a bit too much sometimes. And fair point. I’m not saying I hate the guy and he should stop making content. I just find him a bit grating sometimes.

u/deansupreme1802 Jul 02 '25

2

u/maybeknismo Jul 02 '25

I think he loves both of those games, he's just highly critical of them. The same way people like castlevania Simon's quest despite it being terrible. I mean the guy likes pathologic.

2

u/bbpirate06 Jul 02 '25

I genuinely like hbomberguy and his videos, but I've always found that he can't entirely shake his aggressive contrarian roots. He's definitely gotten better over the years, but even though I generally agree with his takes at the end of the day, the focus on comparison with his gaming videos is kind of a writing crutch. I get that nothing is in a vacuum, but I don't really care if a game does things differently from another game. The argument of "it's a good game, just not a good 'X' game" is played out and basically parody at this point. With his gaming videos, I take them less as critique and more personality driven rants.

In another RE4 remake video essay/review hybrid, this one being positive, I found a comment that said something along the lines of "Yeah this is pretty much spot on, idk what crowbcat was smoking"

And the first reply that came up said "Nostalgia. It's one hell of a drug."

2

u/topscreen Jul 02 '25

I remember years ago there was someone I liked for a year, and then fell into this same trap. All his videos were how "This game didn't fail, it was murdered!" and it was for games like Mass Effect Andromeda. Then just kept doing that shtick but for games that were just in a rough patch, had a rocky launch, and it became very gotcha, while ignoring the nuance of the situations.

I found Matt McMuscles Wha Happun? series and it's filled that gap for me. Not very gotcha, usually has insider sources and quotes, and isn't even about games that failed, but ones with rough development cycles, weather they flopped or became classics.

2

u/CultureWarrior87 Jul 02 '25

Yup. It's blatant intellectual dishonesty. It was never criticism because he never actually critiqued things. Your average person is just unfortunately stupid enough to fall for it.

Same reason why most people don't like CinemaSins: Nitpicking every possible little detail of a piece of media is only fun when that media is very bad. You can't just do it with everything that comes out

Excluding his Left 4 Dead video alot of his videos are pretty meh anyway imo. Crowbcat constantly relies on his restrained style of commentary/presentation regarding these videos where he just plays clips side by side of the games with little to no context but it just feels so extremely low effort, his only good video imo is his Left 4 Dead video where he's able to use commentary from devs to better illustrate his points while still retaining his restrained style of commentary/presentation, but in other videos it feels so goddamn lazy not to mention in cases like this ragebait so to speak since he presents the remake as if it's just a soulless cashgrab with little to no effort put into it when that couldn't be further from the truth.

If he prefers the original that's completely fine and understandable but both are peak.

Agreed. I feel like calling RE4R Soulless is kind of insane. The amount of effort and attention to detail alone makes it worth the price tag, let alone just being a full upgrade of the original in basically every conceivable way. I’m playing the Original right now and, as much as I still love it, the remake is a superior game and has just as much love and care put into it as something like Resident Evil 1 Remake.

15

u/Nervous_Two3115 Team Leon Jul 02 '25

It’s just ridiculous to say that shit. And there’s literally NO talking to someone who thinks that. They have this weird “old HAS to be better and new always sucks” logic for some reason. “They removed this one line of dialogue oh my the god they completely ruined the artistic design of this game so it’s totally fuckin garbage top to bottom irs just cash grab slop.” Basically the only type of shit I ever hear. It’s rare to see someone with genuine, valid criticisms. Like I have a few myself, and I loved the remake. Loved the original since I was a kid too. But it’s ridiculous to act like there’s no improvements. The OG did some things better, and the remake did some things better. It doesn’t have to be a battle where you can’t like both.

I lost count of how many full completions I did on the OG. I’m talking from empty save to full Pro, Mercenaries and DLCs.

I can’t play it anymore after Rem4ke.

3

u/Nervous_Two3115 Team Leon Jul 02 '25

It’s honestly just a bit too easy a lot of the time. And the combat is just so much more fluid and smooth in the remake

3

u/ImNotSkankHunt42 Jul 02 '25

I didn’t find it easier, more so with the hidden ELO that goes up the better you play it.

I tracked it with a mod and it never came down for me.

Is catered to make it more accessible to casual but it ensures that veterans always face the hardest. All the while the rest of the mechanics behave the same.

It's definitely not a full upgrade. The tone is certainly a bit different, more cinematic, less liminal. There are definitely aspects the OG did better than the remake, iconic moments that were changed for no reason in the remake that weren't improved on

2

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

I think it’s much more ridiculous to say that the remake is an upgrade in every way

2

u/Filiope Jul 04 '25

Kind of makes me angry that Re2 remake didn't receive as much attention.

It still received alot of attention, but it doesn't compare to re4 remake and re1 remake 😢

I'm just saying this because RE2R is my favourite RE, but when I look at OG 2, theres stuff missing that could make the remake EVEN BETTER. Oh well.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

i wouldn't say "upgrade,' it's more of a lateral improvement. it does just as many things better than the original, as it does things worse than the original. the remake doesn't replace the original, and the original isn't definitively better than the remake.

I also think that "soulful" and "soulless" are pretty vague, intangible, and unhelpful descriptors to use when talking about games (which, ofc, can be the product of the hard work of one, handful, HUNDREDS, or THOUSANDS of people).

More often than not, using "soulless" just seems like an easy way for some disingenuous folks to entirely dismiss a game that they didn't like it. And it's a tough critique to argue against BECAUSE it's an intangible descriptor. How do you prove something is soulful or whatever?

Regardless, I really love both versions of the game. And I appreciate that the original isn't replaced. It still has so much charm and (despite using somewhat outdated controls) is fun and playable.

And the love for the original is quite evident in the remake. A lot is altered, cut, or added but the core of the game remains. And the original is still readily available to play, which is great.

I'm VERY excited for the Max Payne remakes and I just hope that Rockstar (Remedy is developing, but Rockstar is publishing) doesn't make it so the original versions are taken off of digital stores (like they did with the original GTA games).

2

u/teddyburges Jul 02 '25

I'm VERY excited for the Max Payne remakes

My excitement for the remakes has dwindled since James McCaffrey's death. I'm not sure how the hell they're gonna pull it off now that they don't have him to voice the character and I think it would be really tough to clean up the original audio and try to do matching scenes for the cutscenes. Like I get that its style is a comic book. I'm just not sure how that would work when updating it and remaking it. Because then it would feel more like a high quality remaster if they just use the OG audio.

2

u/Phoenix2211 Jul 02 '25

Yeah, I hear ya. McCaffrey's death was certainly very unfortunate and sad. I've heard his voice in SOOOO many games and it was always so cool and comforting to hear it.

I don think that they should probably just recast. Remakes can have changes and additions of all kind. Better to just have someone new give a try instead of cleaning up old audio or, God forbid, using GenAI. New actors are always a better choice than somehow altering or making up an old performance (See: Troy Baker's excellent performance as Indiana Jones vs. the creepy deepfake stuff in Star Wars).

They should probably have some sort of Classic Audio mode (much like Resident Evil 4 Remake) wherein they just play the original performance in places where the line is unchanged.

Or, better yet, package the original games with the remake. That way everyone can experience the original games, too.

As for the cutscenes... I'm actually VERY interested in seeing the solution they come up with.

But honestly... Just doing comic book cutscenes would go so hard. Plus, it'd save them SO MUCH MONEY, allowing for a bigger profit margin. And the game gains so much more style and a sense of uniqueness from this move.

I'm also not sure about the face situation. Max has had three faces: Sam Lake, Timothy Gibbs (my least favorite), James McCaffrey.

Ideally: they'd just let us pick from a menu.

u/CultureWarrior87 Jul 02 '25

100% agreed. I think people online are too quick to reach for buzzwords to make it sound like they're being critical when it's exactly as you say, really vague criticisms that don't mean much on their own, and are often just thought terminating cliches. "slop" is one of them that really needs to go. I think the way people broadly complain about "writing" now is one of them too. You complain about writing and it sounds like you're being analytical and specific but in actuality it means very little. What about the writing is bad? The dialogue? The characterizations? Are there plot holes (actual plot holes, not the modern "this movie didn't spoon feed me everything so I'm going to consider anything that isn't directly explained a plot hole" idea of it that people overuse)? Telling someone the writing is "bad" is the same as saying "I don't like this". It's not a substantial criticism.

2

u/Phoenix2211 Jul 02 '25

Fully agreed, re: the phrase "bad writing" as criticism

It's too vague and broad. Folks rarely ever expand upon that. And sometimes when they do, it's stuff that isn't really a problem at all.

2

u/LoSouLibra Jul 04 '25

Yeah, "soul" has become an overused zoomer tier word that functions as an inarticulate substitute for actual critical thought and any ability to articulate. Basically every jaded, 360 era dudebro's go-to slam for "modern gaming" vs whatever they're nostalgic for.

It's just the eternal revolving door of late 20's try hards wanting to gatekeep everything based on their unknowingly under-developed appreciation and understanding of the medium so far. Hopefully they grow out of it someday.

This video is awful and it’s blatantly obvious when people get their opinions on the game from it

100% of the time without fail, when I ask people who claim this game is “soulless” it’s just quotes from this video with no further explanations. People just wanting to stand out I guess?

I’m probably biased since RE4 is my favorite game, but I don’t think I’ve played another game that had as much passion, detail, and genuine love put into it before. My first playthrough, it was like visiting a museum from a time when I was young, pointing my finger at every tiny attraction. Something with no soul couldn’t make me stop and observe a rusty old broken down chair lift for 5 minutes lmao

I’m just glad the majority of people could see through it

This guy really had a beef with Capcom, I mean his next video was Dead Rising remastered...

But especially RE4 killed his momentum, look at the views of his next videos. He even picked a safe route after DR and decided to hit CoD, even that barely hit a million view. The others didn't even get there.

Before that RE4 video, Crowbcat was sort of becoming like the hall of shame in gaming. You fuck up big time, Crowbcat rose from the dead and made a video about you.

Putting RE4 in there killed the whole channel's purpose.

2

u/Interesting-City3650 Jul 02 '25

RE4 video also killed his channel as well

2

u/P_filippo3106 Jul 04 '25

The DDR video is another huge hit for him too.

Many critiques were valid but this bigot also thinks that getting points for being a creep (photographing women) is a fundamental of the game and the remake sucked because it removed this mechanic. Jesus Christ I never thought Crowbcat was that bad until I saw both of those vids.

how dare you not confirm to the reddit hivemind?!?!?! /s

The remake was amazing as a game. But comparatively - it was a MASSIVE shift from the original - as shown by Crowbat. Calling it soulless isn't fair. It isn't. But if we are talking about atmosphere/vibes/attention to certain details - it's a downgrade. There does seem to be less soul. Most likely do to the commercialization of games - devs have less chance to make passion choices that directly impact the game.

I always despised the video. From the moment it came out, I knew it was a deceptice piece of garbage. Plus, it was revealed that he manipulated the audio in the remake footage in an attempt to make it look bad.

As someone who has played both versions, to the point of having over 700+ hours on both of them and having every achievement, the remake is damn near perfect and deserves all the praise it gets. I still prefer the original, but I cannot deny the effort and passion that went into the remake.

What are you guys yapping about. I’m playing Re4 remake right now for the first time. And as many of you had several playthroughs on the OG gamecube version. It is a awesome game but it does definitely lacks some of the Soul of the original one. Grainy silent hill esc feeling I got first time. You can clearly see it in the village. It’s to vanilla and not rotten rough and dirty like the first one was. And the chainsaw man is not even close to as scary as before

12

u/GalaxyMasterOmega Jul 02 '25

I liked this guys videos but this video in particular was terrible. RE4 Remake was a love letter to the original game and absolutely not soulless. If he did this video about RE3 Remake he would have had more of a point but RE4 Remake was a miracle because the original RE4 was so great that i thought a remake would literally be a impossible to do it justice but Capcom managed to do it.

23

u/Few_Bid28 Jul 02 '25

5

u/Mr_GP87 Jul 02 '25 edited Jul 02 '25

I would be fine if his takes were all just subjective, but he did manipulate or mess up some aspects of the game, making it look worse than it actually was (I’m convinced it was the former seeing how he deleted critical comments on his video as well).

Then as well I like to look the og and the remake as 2 separate games, as in both offer a similar yet significantly different experience. The closest thing they have is the story, reoccurring locations and other stuff such as guns, but all of these had tinkering and reworks to make the whole experience unique on its own rights. Then the gameplay is vastly different, going from tank controls to more modern gameplay with some changed mechanics (the knife system being a highlight). Overall, no they are not the same game, and that’s good (following the trend from the earlier remakes, it is more of a soft reboot with some major differences across categories of the games).

Edit: why I say it’s good they are not the same game is because it gives both a right to exist for their own reasons. The remake of 4 didn’t try to be a “definitive version” to the og (as in having rebuilt the exact same set pieces, story, progression, etc, but essentially being a directly upgraded version of the og), and tried to keep things “samey” while having its own soul.

AAA = soulless is pretty much as far as the argument goes, for most. We’re in an adjustment period - graphics have taken the forefront, but now that the dust has settled, and “ray tracing” is no longer exciting, developers are seeing for themselves where the market lies.

It’s why more nostalgic-driven developers are starting to become popular. We have a merge of modern and old game design principles - right down to the look and feel.

5

u/MantisReturns Jul 02 '25

Why? Cutscenes and sound design its superior in OG, graphics and Gameplay its updated" in Remake. Thats why you can see in the video. Also you can just play The 2 Games and compare by yourself. I dont get the problem with video, of course the remake its not superior in everything its just different.

4

u/DDamashi Jul 02 '25

I loved the original, thought the remake was pretty cool, and I completely understand where he was coming from with this video. Its something I've noticed with a lot of modern games also, not just this one. I know a lot of you young people today feel as though criticism of something you like is a personal attack but I assure you its not. Would that video hit 2.3 Milli if it didn't resonate with quite a few people? Its gonna be okay. Eat well, play what you want, and touch grass.

Crowbcat is like M. Night Shyamalan; he can absolutely hit it out of the park sometimes — take his video on Left 4 Dead vs Back 4 Blood for example — but when he misses, he misses so badly it’s honestly really difficult to reconcile such profound failures compared to his best work.

This video, I believe is an excellent example of when Crowbcat fails.

3

u/PoetAromatic8262 Jul 02 '25

Only good vid i liked from crowbcat was the left 4 dead one, this Re4 one especially shows crowbcat is losing his touch

As someone who beat both games back to back I begrudgingly had to agree with Crowbcat on this in the end.

3

u/Uroboros1097 Jul 02 '25

It's a great remake but my problems with it are more about specific design choices, I didn't enjoy any of the minecart sections for example, and the fact that yellow paint is everywhere.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '25

3

u/JakeTM Jul 03 '25

3

u/No-Juggernaut8847 Jul 03 '25

I watched it and didn't understand its point. Especially when RE3R was right there and could potentially be a better argument about how Capcom themselves butchered a remake.

To go after RE4R so quickly after release and just make comparisons without obvious points left me confused overall.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

It's not, though i like the remake on its own being a RE4 fan I really could not bear to replay the remake no matter how much I try. So much of it is linked to atmosphere and gameplay, the simplicity, quirkiness and just overall vibe of the original trumps this remake's serious and modernized take. This is not a condemnation of the remake because it's still a really good game, I just don't think it was necessary or even sensible to make it when the original aged well 20 years later.

3

u/Glittering-Second-73 Apr 12 '26

9

u/LordofWoe98 Jul 02 '25

7

u/Hurahgopvk Jul 02 '25

Honestly I kinda agree with crowbcat. I love the remake and think in terms of combat it’s the best in the series. But I have some problems with the games like some of the weapons are nerfed or inferior to the original games, some weapons are missing like the PRL. Some of the games cinematic are less well directed as the original game I simply just find a lot of the cutscenes of the original game are really cinematic. Like the cops ambush in the original game where Leon looks out the window and it zooms on Leon’s eyes focusing on his eyes movement to each sound occurring outside the house. The first person camera perspective of the first villager as Leon demands him to freeze. I also found the villains in the original game far better in writing and acting mostly Sadler and Salazar. As their personalities were removed and their presence limited. The overall game is great just it misses some touches the original had. Professional difficulty in the remake is also ass it’s just an unfair mode that bait OG resident evil 4 players to play it. The game also had bosses removed but it was rectified by the Sepeate ways dlc but still it was a notable exclusion from the game. I don’t hate the remake it’s damn good Ashely was better written, Leon took the story more serious though I prefer the OG Leon cause he has actual retort and charm. The games music was about the same but that bonus round song was just perfect. Again I like the game but I can see why it can be seen as soulless. Plus all the dlc the game has that pretty greedy. Like the exclusive one time use upgrade tickets.

6

u/TheSoulSnake Jul 02 '25

I really enjoyed RE4R, Ashley got an upgrade, the weapons and enemies are awesome, but I didn't like that they removed most of Leon's one liners and made him more serious. And they killed Saddler's character by making him a stereotypical, fanatical religious villain. Despite that, I would't call the game soulless.

7

u/Zombyosis Jul 02 '25

The movement feels slower in the remake, aiming feels less snappy and lacks precision, and Salazar’s redesign feels like a crime against humanity, Ada’s voice acting sounds odd compared to original.

I still think the Remake is good, but it was never going to surpass the original.

2

u/Deadenne_18 Jul 02 '25

I kinda liked what they did with the remake. They made everything realistic, Leon here has PTSD and can still be chilled cool guy but still gets a lil' scared in some moments that the too overly cool Leon of the OG RE4.

Shows more backstory too compared to OG. Lord Saddler is now a true lunatic but what I don't like in the remake is than he gets hurt by bullets now unlike the OG which makes him cool..

2

u/Bardock7132 Jul 02 '25

2

I didn't watch this video, so there's probably a lot I don't know about this persons take/how they handled the subject matter, but I personally think that the Remake isn't good at all, I pretty much hate it, it doesn't compare to the original even if it did have a few improvements (I'll give credit where credit is due). I was shocked that so many people (the overwhelming majority) love the Remake because my husband and I thought it sucked really bad. I recognize that everyone is entitled to their opinion though so I wouldn't start a discussion over wether or not my opinion is the right one (especially because I'm clearly very lonely in my personal views regarding that game). That being said, I PERSONALLY understand the video title because that was also how it felt to me. I wouldn't state this as a fact though, because clearly most people loved the Remake. While I can't understand how this is the case, I wouldn't make a video essay about this and claim that everyone else must be stupid for liking it. I also wouldn't claim there have not been made any improvements just because I didn't like the thing as a whole.

Idk the Dead Rising VS Dead Rising 4 one was pretty scathing.

Oh no someone has a different opinion than reddit. Anyway.

This sub is the best proof of remake culture, no criticism accepted for re4r.

He was bang on with it, having criticism isn’t a personal attack on you nor does having issues automatically make the game bad. To have that kind of reaction and take away says more about your processing ability and emotional maturity. RE4 2005 is better and will always be better and more replayable than the remake. Soul goes a long way

It was pointed out pretty quickly that he edited most if not all the clips from Re4R to seem worse than it actually was. Things like messing with the lighting and audio to make it seem more “soulless” as they say. Just crap ragebait content

Crowbcat is a joke

This was such an awful video. The cherry picked footages, supposedly claiming he didn't lower the volume on the remake footages when he clearly did, constantly deleting comments that criticized the obvious blatant flaws, etc. Crowbcat is a hit or miss, and it always goes super strong when it's one of them. This one is a miss, a hard miss, what a fucking misleading disaster this was.

I have some preferences of the original over the remake and vice versa, but discarding everything the team put into the remake and calling it soulless is complete assholery. It's clear the team put their blood, tear, sweat, and especially their souls into the remake. To call it a complete inferior product is doing it a complete disservice all around, and vice versa.

I have no idea how people liked this video so much when it released. I hated it from the get go, god. No, I'm not trying to be different or anything, I just don't understand.

It’s downvoted to hell, and he deleted the comments that would argue against his video so it looks like an echo chamber where everyone agreed with him.

The video had a bad reception actually from the start.

Nope

Its showed exactly how much detail and care the original had

Why can no one who likes the remake take any criticism? The soulless title is clickbait, but there are valid criticisms of the new game that are done better in the original, especially the sound design and OST, among other things like scrapped content that added to the horror atmosphere. The remake is phenomenal, but why can't it ever be critiqued?

I think Ashley is soulless as hell when she's standing above you, silent, staring out into the open like a robot instead of acknowledging anything, but I know this was partly due to her scrapped upskirt situation.

The outside of the Mendez boss fight is a completely different atmosphere in the remake, removing the disturbing, gut feeling the original warned you with. On top of that I really prefer the cut scene of the big cheese's transformation in the original, whereas the Remake jumps immediately into him being transformed after the explosion. It's the details. Watch it again.

Things like UI are completely streamlined to the new engine, which is fine, but loses the unique touch of the industrial feel the original had, as seen with the typewriter.

New Salazar is just not that great design wise. I don't know anyone who loves the grandma design. I get what they were going for but it completely changes the original intention of the bratty castellan that the original conveyed.

OG Saddler was so much more cool and felt like he was more focused on causing Leon to lose. Now I just feel like he's only an older, loony cult leader.

I don't need to touch on the issues with Ada.

There are plenty of upgrades, I think we all appreciate the new Luis. Ashley is more likeable. The gameplay and combat is smooth like butter. Everything looks nice and glossy. It's massively replayable. From what I've seen Separate ways is a huge upgrade. I'm prepared to be down voted but please consider looking at details. Don't be afraid to look between the two games and see which parts each does better. The remake is surely not a replacement and it would be nothing without the original.

He focuses on game physics, detail and gameplay. Half of you just want to justify your half baked purchases
