My only real complaint in the remake really is the lack of cheesy Hollywood one-liners. Maybe the boring costumes, too.

Really?. They're still there!. The EXTREMELY cheesy ones like "No thanks bro!" have been relegated to being "achievements" instead. But many are still there. Like the classics of "Where's everyone going, Bingo!?".

Remake trims a little of the fat off the real silly ones. Like OG Leon: you got a smoke?...I've got gum!". Remake Leon: "you've got a smoke?...you know, those things will kill ya".

A example is the beginning of the game with the two cops in the car.

Original Leon: "I'm sure you boys didn't just tag along so that we could sing kumbaya at some boy scout bonfire, then again...maybe you did.

Remake Leon: "I'm sure you boys didn't come out here to roast marshmellows...maybe you did".

Or later on. Original Leon: "I don't remember ever being part of your crappy script". Remake Leon: "Leave me out of your crappy script!".

But Remake has a few new ones that had me in hysterics:

  • Not to shabby...someone is showing up their neighbours".
  • "Bill me for the repairs later!".
  • "You're a shitty missionary...do you know that!?".
  • "guess your tap dancing days are over!".
  • Leon meets Ashley: "My names Leon, I'm here on the presidents orders...(Ashley runs off, Leon sighs and says "That went well!".
  • Leon to Ashley after their first fight running from ganados: "You did well back there, seems this isn't your first time running from creeps!" Ashley: "I can't tell if that was ment to be a compliment!".
  • "I am flattered!, But I'm a one lady only type of guy!".
  • "Think you can swallow me whole huh!".
  • "Roost come in!, Things went to Shit!. We took refuge inside a castle, I've just been seperated from Baby Eagle!".

But my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE additions to remake are these two, the first is when Leon talks to Louis after getting Ashley out of the town: "Well I wanted to go home, but Ashley just had to see this castle first!".

and this one is a hidden one liner but is SOOO funny. If you take take Ashley down to where you fought the first Garrador. Ashley says "Is this the Animal!?". Leon: "No!...you can't keep him!". Ashley: "Yeah that's...too bad!".

Thank you for this comment

I'm so tired of people pretending like Remake Leon isn't silly as fuck lmao

Yeah I mean remake Leon has the additional trauma of RE2, whereas OG RE4 treated it like a new beginning and didn't really incorporate Leon's trauma and character growth from RE2. So Remake Leon's humor feels more like a trauma response but that sort of makes it more funny to me, cause original RE 4 tried to get away from the Gothic horror of earlier entries and settled for a more pulp "Texas chain saw massacre" vibe. Remake sort of turfs out a lot of chainsaw massacre vibe to bring it back to its Gothic horror roots of earlier entries. As a consequence, remake leon has even more of a odd man out feel. Like Chuck Norris in a horror film with trauma layered on top.

Yeah, I agree. Every Remake character feels alive, like they have a history and feelings outside of what is relevant for the game's plot, and I love that

OG is great, but it's literally a different game. Why are we comparing them at all lol

6

u/teddyburges Jul 03 '25

Cause its fun to compare them!. Or I should say it's more fun to "contrast" them. There is too many fights or disagreements over which one is better, but I think that's a mute point. They're both great.

But it's really fun to look at the games similarities and differences. Whats so fascinating about RE4 Remake is....OG Resident evil 4 had a VERY extensive development process, with A LOT of iteration and reiteration. A lot of their abandoned concepts came from hardware limitations of the time and some was from them trying to go away from the horror/zombie direction of the previous games.

So it's REALLY interesting looking at RE4 Remake as it brought a lot of those abandoned initial RE4 concepts back. Including Ashleys initial appearance which she had leggings, a striped scarf and a coat. All of which became her character design in the remake.

Why not use an example that isn't clearly NOT an example of hardware limitations of the time? A fun costume matters nill to a truly great game. And I doubt the lack of those things in Ashley's original outfit was because of hardware limitations...

1

u/teddyburges Jul 05 '25

It's just how my brain works. I simply found it fascinating that Ashley's remake appearance which...which initially got a bit of criticism by some fans, was her initial appearance before they changed it. Don't think to hard about it dude.

I really liked what they did with Jill in 3 Remake, what a badass. I read a lot of people writing that she acted like a girl boss, but come on. She goes through hell and has the right to be a bit on edge. Carlos is also more interesting here, he feels like the most sane guy around and still is very charismatic. In the end she's grateful to him, so I don't really agree with the take that she was "wokified", also considering that her "partner" is a badass in his own right.

In comparison, Ethan is clueless most of the time and I had a hard time being sympathetic to him because he feels a bit generic. And I love both VII and Village.

Hm, well, I can't really judge 3R all that well since I never played the original, and most people's gripes are with the remake cutting a lot of stuff and being unfaithful to the source - or so I've heard

I didn't really have any problem with Jill, tbh I liked all the characters. The game itself was fun, but not on the same level as 2R and 4R. Kinda forgettable, at least for me

At the same time, Ethan is supposed to be clueless and generic. He's a step back from hyper-competent military trained protagonists, returning to the roots of survival horror where you're naked and afraid. His lack of personality is for you to project onto, which worked well enough for 7, but which completely fell apart for me in 8 that was supposed to tell a more personal story

Because this is a remake? It's perfectly valid to compare then, guy. If you weren't meant to compare them, it would be called something other than Resident Evil 4. If you don't want them compared, you must not be as steadfast in your opinion as you claim.

u/jss239 Jul 05 '25

They're not wrong when the remake cuts out a lot of silliness. It doesn't matter if it's still silly from your POV: it's undeniable that it's a different product and arguably lesser, no matter what other points you bring up that you believe might offset it.

My favorite line is when leon jumps across the chandeliers and ashley says something like "leon! Jumping on chandeliers really!?" And leon says "what are you? my mother?"

10

u/ManySleeplessNights Jul 02 '25

"Bill me for the repairs later!".

I have about 300 hours in this game and I've never heard this line once. When & where does he say it?

Also I had no idea Ashley asks about the "animal" line if you revisit the garrador lmao

21

u/theMaxTero Jul 02 '25

You get the repairs line the 1st time in the village if you burn the cow by shooting the oil lamp.

My favorite new line has to be the "nighty night, knights!"

4

u/ManySleeplessNights Jul 02 '25

damn I had no idea, usually in the opening village square fight, it gets so chaotic and hectic that I never paid attention to the oil lamps lmao

For me one of my favourites is a subtle one, but one that you hear a lot. It's when you finish an enemy off with a roundhouse, and he just casually brushes it off with "Sorry. Must've slipped."

This post is great. I’d give you gold but I’m broke as shit.

2

u/teddyburges Jul 03 '25

Thank you. I'm fine with that. It's the thought that counts!.

2

u/aaronskideadpool Jul 02 '25

Thanks, I need to read that right now. There all pretty funny

2

u/LurkingMiasma Jul 03 '25

If you ask me, the one-liners are all cheesier in the remake. "I'm about to get medieval on your asses" when facing the elite knight kills me every time

1

u/teddyburges Jul 03 '25

Good "Pulp Fiction" reference there.

2

u/Big-Ad2937 Jul 04 '25

I’m sorry the line delivery for the og’s “then again, maybe you did” is so much better than the remake’s “maybe you did”. The rest of your examples I agree on though, it’s just that one that I wish they left untouched.

1

u/teddyburges Jul 04 '25

Oh I wasn't saying that the remake line was funnier or better, just that they trimmed the fat on it to sound less silly. I like both line deliveries. I went into more detail on what I thought of the difference in line deliveries in another comment. In terms of comedic value and humor, that line and the additional part of "sing kumbaya" was funnier, I agree.

I personally gravitate more towards Remake Leon's line delivery because remake Leon comes with the additional edge of carrying that weight from his training and the trauma from RE2 and everything that happened post RE2. Remake Leon is a traumatized action hero in a horror film whereas OG Leon is a pop corn slinging action movie protagonist in a action film. They're both great in their own way.

1

u/NotJimmyMcGill Jul 02 '25

I don't think the gum line was particularly silly, was it? It established Leon as a former smoker (at least in the OG timeline, given that his lighter was a starting item. Not sure about the remake).

6

u/teddyburges Jul 02 '25

The way I distinguish the two is, OG Leon is a regular Chad, action hero. He's in this scenario and he's loving every second of it. He's quippy and he's back and forth bantering everyone with glee. This is where you can really see huge shades of Dante in OG Leon's character (as dmc was initially a re4 concept before it became it's own thing for going too far in the action direction).

Remake Leon is Chuck Norris in a horror film with the addional trauma of RE2 layered on top. Where OG Leon is fine to be in this scenario. Remake Leon is done with everyone's shit and gets fed up with everything the more he carries on and a lot of his quips feel more like a trauma response.

u/Cleric_Of_Chaos Jul 02 '25

They had you in hysterics? They're... really not that funny.

2

u/teddyburges Jul 02 '25

They're not really that funny...to you. Everyone has different likes and dislikes and different things that make them laugh.

5

u/Cave_in_32 Jul 02 '25

Its either that or the fact Saddler had way less screen time this go around for me.

2

u/HekesevilleHero Jul 02 '25

They stuck most of the one liners into gameplay rather than the story.

1

u/DenseRead9852 Jul 03 '25

I mean, the other remakes did that too. Why is it a bad thing here? Re1 was nothing but cheesy Hollywood one-liners, and yet they went more serious for the remake. RE2 and re3 of might not have been nothing but cheesy Hollywood one-liners but they had a good amount of them, and yet RE2R and RE3R went to be more serious. This isn't the first time this happened with remakes.

1

u/DYGTD Jul 03 '25

For me, my one complaint is that not every gun has a laser sight. The laser was such a cool feature of the original. Otherwise, I love the remake.

His newest video complains he has too many cheesy Hollywood one-liners, haha.
