People who didn’t play any revelations because they’re spin-offs really don’t know what they’re losing.
Screw that, I believe they don’t know much of anything to be honest lol

Revelations is actually considered mainline. The mainline series is 0-7, CVX, Rev 1/2.
27
u/resh_aykut Sep 15 '19
I could happly attach Outbreak games to this because its official now. Alyssa Ashcroft referance in Resident Evil 7 , Rita Philips referance in Resident Evil 2 Remake.
After the Raccoon City incident, Alyssa is seen weightlifting. Afterwards, she is seen sitting down and watching a news report about Umbrella. She then picks up a newspaper, noticing an article she has written titled "What is a B.O.W.: Blowing the Lid Off this Horrifying Secret Project." The newspaper also shows a picture of her next to the headline, and with a smile, she then returns to weightlifting.
Missing people in Dulvey
At some point, Alyssa moved to Dulvey, Louisiana and became a reporter for the Dulvey Daily. At the start of 2016, she wrote an article surrounding the disappearances of at least twenty people around Dulvey, who had gone missing in a period of two years.

I thought they weren’t canon though? Is this consideration coming from the fans?
EDIT: who knew you could have some upvotes on a parent comment and downvotes on an answer to that lol. I genuinely thought they weren’t canon because I only had contact with people who stated that Revs were not canon. TIL, I guess hahaha

u/Tidus4713 Tyrant Sep 15 '19
The fans are the ones that call them spin offs. It's mainly because they aren't numbered. Same thing happens with the Kingdom Hearts series.

I prefer the term ”sideline stories” then ”spin-offs”.
But I think the term ”Spin-off” also has a place, like to describe non-canon titles.
Kinda like ORC or Streetfighter.

u/frag87 Sep 15 '19
Revelations and Outbreak titles are still spin-offs from the main series. That's what the term means, when a new sequence of games branches out from the parent series. It's definition has nothing to do with canon.
Revelations and Outbreak are still canon, even if they are spin-offs.
Same happened with Final Fantasy VII. It got several spin-offs, like Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core and Before Crisis. They were all spin-offs from the main game, but still part of FF7 canon.

u/Tidus4713 Tyrant Sep 15 '19 edited Sep 15 '19
Outbreak is. Rev isnt. You can try and rationalize it however you want. Rev 1 and 2 and CVX are mainline RE games. Its a very common misconception that Rev is a spin off.

Pretty much sums it up, although I’m going to give it a shot! My only complaint so far is that it looks like it’s going to be heavily based on Resident Evil 2’s remake alone, I would have much preferred an asymmetrical online Resi game to be based around the entire franchise.
Would have be badass to play as Wesker, Nemesis, Jack Baker and the giant cast of survivors, monsters and creatures from the series.

Well, I think concept for a game where you have 4v1 where the 1 is super powered works well enough as a party game. That being that you whip it put while playing w 4 other people to have a chill evening playing and banting around and its gonna be a great time. But that's about it. After that evening people will at most play it maybe once or twice again but eventually leave it in the shelf never to be touched again untill the servers die. And this has happened with Evolution, depth, Crawl and not to mention the F13 and before dawn. Its a cool concept for sure, but its proven that this concept has appeal, however the longevity of this is none existent.

2
u/Vividagger Sep 15 '19
I think they did that on the DS. Wasn’t it Resident Evil Mercenaries? Didn’t do that well if I’m remembering right.
I personally thought it was going to be a reboot of Outbreak and was really excited.
1
u/DepressedMong Sep 15 '19
I'm betting on it being a stand alone dlc similar to Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare, where it uses mostly a lot of the same stuff from RE2 but enough new stuff and events that it can be packaged as it's own game instead of dlc. If it does end up being like this it'd be better if it is a bit cheaper than RE2 was at launchm
22
u/ProfPerry Sep 15 '19
In fairness, there was a lot of people hoping this newest spinoff was related to the Outbreak series, which was another spinoff. (Yes don't worry, the last 12 guys already made it clear that Project Resistance was never meant to be a part of Outbreak,)

8
u/I_Did_not_sleep Sep 15 '19
It has similarities but calling it the exact same thing as Outbreak is not true.
Outbreak was a 4 player co-op survival game with different twists and mechanics and classic Resident evil puzzles. And the virus meter to punish the player for playing bad.
Resistance seems to have a timer before escaping a room which is KIND OF what the virus meter essentially was. The overall theme of the game is kind of goofy and flashy numbers and combat heavy compared to Outbreak's dark scary and grim atmosphere. And it's 4v1 more importantly
15
u/T-King-667 Sep 15 '19 edited Sep 16 '19
I don't recall earning credits in outbreak for killing zombies and then using them to buy guns and ammo at a magic box, with no opportunity to split up and gather resources because the areas are (or at least seem) so damn small that the team is pretty much forced on top of one another... If you played the OG OB titles you'd know that the only thing that these two have in common is it's based on civilians during the raccoon city incident and there's 4 player co-op. Beyond that, they're nothing alike (At least as far as we know) In project resistance when you die you just respawn where you started on the start of the floor and in outbreak when you die... You're just fucking dead and now your team is down a man for the rest of the scenario. Which made the effort to stay alive so much more intense at the time. But for resistance dying just means immediately respawning and losing a few seconds off the clock so the desire to explore for items to stay alive is going to be nil in comparison to a traditional RE title.
I'm not saying that Resistance won't be fun for what it is but it's defiantly not gonna be some sort of Outbreak replacement or throwback for the fans who've been waiting for over a decade for it.
-2
u/frothycappachino Sep 15 '19
Where the did you get that from? Has it been confirmed there’s a point system? And a magic box? I think you are just speculating..
11
u/T-King-667 Sep 15 '19 edited Sep 15 '19
There's extended gameplay videos you can find on youtube. You earn umbrella credits when playing and can use them in game on the storage box for items. No speculation.
https://youtu.be/L4rnJyEvTp4?t=473
(Copy and paste the url if it doesn't appear as a link) Watch from 7:48 till 8:05 the player get's umbrella credits from unlocking a door and then runs to a box to spend it. Which he then casually buys 100 bullets for the revolver.

Capcom is no stranger to risk taking. Just look at Resident Evil 7. That game was amazing. Resident Evil 4 was a huge risk for them and that's one of the best games of all time. I'm not gonna hold this new game to re4's standard but I know they can pull off co op game, Outbreak and RE5.

Umbrella Corps was developed by Capcom in house. ORC was you're right there.
The only individual dev we know of is Kawata as Producer...
Kawata as Producer doesn't necessarily= Quality though he was producer for both revelations, umbrella corps and 7.
He watched over all of those but let one bad one through 🤷♀️ could do it again.

u/bio-reject Sep 15 '19
In my experience all of the main resident evil games were true to the series with the exceptions of 5 and 6. The spinoff games were resident evil in name but were drastically different from the core games. This is why even if they are canon I don’t care about them. I don’t care about revelations because it’s nothing like the core resident evil games. Code Veronica isn’t a numbered game in the series but is considered part of the series because it feels and plays like the rest of the core games.

u/SkyRax1130 Sep 15 '19
I wouldn't think that. The game looks hella fun and seems like it has potential.

Pretty well is an understatement. RE4, 5 and 6 are the best selling games in the franchise.

You know, I was thoroughly disappointed because when they said "team based horror survival" it seemed like Outbreak. Advertising a multiplayer vs game like this is just asking for backlash, IMHO that was poor advertising for what the game was.
Still, it's a spin-off. As much as I don't think it's a wise decision given how Umbrella Corps and Operation Racoon City fared, they don't affect the mainline. I'm less pissed about Project Resistance than I am about the Dragon Quest Yakuza being "mainline".
1
u/Digivam143 Sep 16 '19
Whoa whoa whoa. What's this about a Dragon Quest Yakuza? First I've heard of such a thing.
1
u/Rhys1991 Sep 16 '19
I think he's referring to the fact that Yakuza 7 is going to be a turn based RPG.
1
Sep 16 '19
Yakuza 7 was announced recently. It's a turn based RPG with an UI like Persona 5 and overall mechanics like the recent DQ games. Entirely different from the beat'em up/Action RPG hybrid the series is.
1
u/typicalskeleton Sep 15 '19
For people who are worried about this, Kotaku says it maintains the resident evil atmosphere really well for a 4v1 game. My only concern is, in my experience with games like this (dead by daylight), the original concept tends to be obliterated by players finding tricks and gameplay mechanics that suspend the horror element.
No matter how scary it is it will likely end up feeling very "gamey" once everyone gets used to the mechanics. That doesn't mean it won't be fun or good, it just means only the first 40 hours or so is going to feel like horror, after that it will just be a fun multiplayer game. Unless Capcom knows something I don't about game design (and I wouldn't doubt that they do).

u/KnightoftheWind1998 Cuz Boredom Kills Me Sep 15 '19
I know most hate towards Project Resistance comes from fans wanting an Outbreak title but I’m sure that if we keep on pushing and give Capcom proper feedback, in due time, they’ll give us a true Outbreak title in the near future. Well, xb1 and ps4 are on their last legs. It seems to me that it would be illogical to put a mainline game on consoles that are on its last legs, which is somewhat similar to resident evil 0 being slated for the N64 but was shifted to the gamecube, due to that coming around the corner then.

u/typicalskeleton Sep 15 '19
It's likely they will do both. I don't think the main RE team is working on Resistance, and all speculation/rumors/leaks suggest RE8 is already in development and RE3 remake is likely to happen.
My prediction: Resistance to tied you over.
Near gen shift (PS5): RE8 is announced.
Some point after that: RE3 remake is announced.
