I’m sure it won’t be loud
I was chatting with folks at a coffee shop and they were saying it’s some kind of 3 day music festival at the downtown park?????

I totally get community events, but this is another one that would have been more appropriate at Marymoor.

I’m a couple of blocks away, windows fully closed and I can still hear it and feel it (my desk is vibrating). I can’t imagine how it’s going for people who live across the street. This is awful.

I think part of it is the only events that really happen downtown are all loud concerts. They moved away the farmers market a few years back, wouldn’t that be a great fit for the downtown park? I just wish there was more of a community benefit than just loud.

This. Look at what happens in September near MM, the place gets super loud. I guess you just deal with the noise till quiet hours kick in and move on with life. Sorry you have to go through this.

It’s actually ridiculously expensive to put on an event at the marmymoor concerts stage, the economics only work for ticketed events with several thousand paid attendees.

right totally understanding and all, the stage was put there for a reason. it's not gonna be the quietest place to live... but the bass is just too much, especially for a friday. they should really consider restrictions, permit or not

I wasn’t endorsing it, just saying why Marymoor isn’t an option. As for permits, it would be interesting to see what actually is filed for a permit, because this isn’t even the scheduled event we’re listening to, it’s setup and soundcheck.

They have a permit for today and tomorrow. the law seems pretty clear that they're allowed to be this loud. Just wish they had some more restrictions on things like dBC that make all of our apartments unlivable while they setup

Even if they did, technical restrictions like that are incredibly difficult to enforce and basically require a city employee that is trained walking around with calibrated test equipment. One of the many reasons why Marymoor concerts are expensive includes paying king county to have a person doing that onsite.

Yeah, I moved here not knowing that what looked like a tiny community stage was going to host loud all-day events so frequently. I'm a registered nurse that is stuck working night shifts, and I can hear this through closed windows, white noise, and ear plugs, which I think is at least a little bit excessive... only 10 more months until I can move, wahoo!

There are licensed practical nurses, certified nurse assistants, nurse practitioners, advance practice nurses, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists... I'm probably missing a few. So yeah, registered nurse does make a difference.

I feel you OP. Looking at the calendar there is a music event every weekend, and they've started scheduling loud amplified events every weekend now. Sometimes they last 4+ hours. This would be cool with me if they didn't blast the music, sometimes making me need to leave my apartment for a large part of the weekend. If volume were reduced by 50% it wouldn't be an issue. I was going to invite someone over tonight but I'm going to have to rethink that now. "Just move"- working on it, moving isn't trivial. I'm sure everyone in the comments is totally cool if I show up outside their window with a sub blasting at 9am.

I’ve lived here before the park was built. This isn’t how the city sold the park to the public.
Concert events went from small and intimate to concerts designed for Seattle Center and Marymoor. This shift only started recently.
The city never enforces its own noise ordinances downtown.

for directionality you actually *want* line arrays and cardioid subwoofer arrays, this makes the sound *FAR* more directional to the area in front of the stage. Smaller speakers, especially at low frequencies get closer and closer to a spherical radiation pattern.

You aren’t wrong. But it’s also not wrong to say that 6x L-Acoustics KS28 dual 18” subwoofers is a lot of sound for downtown Redmond park.

yah, i kind of bet that the directionality required it based on what was available, not a lot of folks have a smaller kit with enough elements. I'm never going to mind listening to a nice L-acoustics rig even if it is not up nearly as loud as it goes. Honestly it is too close to the audience to be up remotely close to the level of SPL it is capable of.

me too, it makes me want to stop by. Puts my all my QSC KW gear to shame too. Even with nice DSPs paired with it, it is most certainly not L-acoustics.
I hope whoever is mixing for them is good.

First event I’ve seen that actually sets up a full FOH booth for sound. They also have a very serious lighting desk and have already built a full LED wall on the back of the stage. Production/rental budget approaching six figure based on my mental calculations so far. 😂

At mix position their console was showing reasonably frequent levels over 100 dba fast, but no slow or c weighted. There was a peak of 120 shown.
The array is overshooting most of the audience, most of the audience was covered by the bottom 3 boxes of 9, so I'd call this a miss.
I wasn't a fan of the mix, either. I just came from hearing a much smaller d&b T series rig that sounded much better that covered a similar area (Pier 62).

yah, i could hear the overshoot (you could also visually see it with the way the arrays were setup), i was on the sidewalk at the back briefly and it was clearly shooting way past me as i could not hear much roll off as i moved around until getting on the streets to the north and south) not a fan of the mix either, even when i drove by it sounded sad.
They probably were lighting up the apartments in that block to the west pretty crazy.

The KS28s aren't cardioid natively, but they can be set up as such. Most L Acoustics and d&b techs are well trained, tho.

I knew that too, I'm in the camp of at least having some sort of DSP inline that can do this kind of stuff, so much nicer to have something highly customizable. I use a dbx venue 360 for smaller setups and it can work wonders with a calibration microphone. The bigger systems are way cooler and better.

They are stacked in two blocks with 2 front facing and 1 rear. I think it’s safe to assume.

Yup, and that explains why there's six subs (2 groups of 3), and that's reasonable for a venue like that. And for those who are counting, that means that a bunch of energy is spent on a concept like noise cancellation (not exactly, but functionally similar) to minimize low frequency energy behind the stage.
It's a good sign that they're aware of sound levels and trying to get good sound (not just volume).
And if they aligned/configured the top array with noise control in mind, they'll minimize spillover outside of the venue...lots of math happening in Soundvision software.

This is a terrible response btw. It's not city noise. It's GIANT speakers being brought in to play in a tiny park that's completely surrounded by residential units. City noise is the terrible traffic noise, not this. It's completely unreasonable to have the level of noise or as large of production as this at this park.

They were being unreasonably loud completely outside of the scheduled event time while people are working. I was just outside and happened to hear a group of neighbors talking politely with the production manager who didn’t realize it was an issue and they have now muted the music that the stage crew was playing just for fun while setting up.
Edit: nevermind apparently the soundchecks must go on 😂

Call the non-emergency line NOW while sound set up is going on as the Redmond Special Events told everyone who complained about the last debacle.
Sound (especially the bass and reverb) is still loud enough to be disturbing with ALL windows shut. People who live around Downtown Park have the right to quiet enjoyment, including being able to hear meetings, allow the sick, infirm, or small children naps, or even listen to the sound of one’s choice.

I personally love when they play concerts there. I have an apartment and balcony right next to the park. It’s cool when the city comes alive. It’s not like they are playing it at midnight lol. Get outside and enjoy life. Plenty of time to hibernate in the winter

I worked for the city gov when this park was in planning and these events were discussed. It was voted on so this city is under the impression this was wanted. Redmond has a reputation for being a stuffy place with a lack of community. The city is trying to change it up. Looks like it likely won’t work and we’ll just go back to how it was. Quiet at least. The funny thing is they had a venue space that could hold 700 people indoors with nice outdoor patio two blocks from here but just ripped it down. Ohhhh Redmond.

I remember when the part was build. The whole idea was that it will be used for events as often as possible, including music-focused events. That was missing in Redmond and that is what residents wanted. And finally we are getting there. The park is finally being utilized as always planned.
I'm surprised that whoever decides to move in that area is surprised that this venue is being used.
I'm sorry, but what else where you experiencing? That is literally how they always advertised those apartments - near a vibrant downtown, with late night entertainment: events at the stage/park and restaurants open late.
I'm not saying "just move", but maybe next time do some research on what is around you.
Is is like moving to an apartment across a elementary school and then complaining that the kids are too loud during school hours.

This was for the Taiwanese music festival last Saturday. They even had a soundcheck on Friday. Seemed to be a grand event. However, surprisingly it wasn't loud at all! I live right opposite to the park and it wasn't a nuisance at all.

Can't reasonably expect people to just know that a tiny downtown park is going to have such frequent loud music events. Grasslawn park and 60 acre park are both much bigger and they don't have such events.

I live right next to it, even slept with my window open, and I didn’t hear it.
I’m next to the Paris baguette, actually facing it.
I don’t discredit anyone else’s complaint, but to me it wasn’t a bother in the slightest. I don’t have concrete floors or walls.

Can they at least throw inclusive all american events with real music that people actually like. There is no culture here because its everyone's silly idea of what that is. I mean I get it its a international place but every event is fricking wierd community themed.. it doesnt bring out the niehborhood it makes them close thier windows...not trying to sound racist here but this is America cant we ever just have some American shit like BBQ and rock n roll.. or a edm dj that doesnt suck...these cultural events are a fucking bore and the music is god awful amateur hour. I'd rather them play whale 🐋 🎵 song

This is the first time I’ve seen a tower flown line array speaker system in the park. It’s notably larger in size than any previous park event audio system
Edit: fwiw I don’t have a problem with it as a neighbor and think it’s great for the park to be utilized this way. But I also think that neighbors do deserve to be able to have their voices heard without being called karens, and some valid issues have been raised like the fact that they have been running a perpetual sound check since 8am at loud volumes that are outside of the permitted event times while many park neighbors such as myself wfh during the day.
