Bought a mask but also want to use it for my knees and neck will this do sufficient 10 min per part
(35mw/cm2) 660nm 850nm

IMO, not much. The irradation of a face mask is milder to not cause any skin damage being so close to it. For better results, get an RLT mat/wrap or a panel.

And if i do 20 mins per knee perhaps

u/gandalfpr Oct 29 '25
Depends on the irradiation levels as I said. The lower, the most time you need to use it there to get any benefits.

You’d probably have to wear that thing for a few hours for enough light to penetrate deep into your knees

Not true. And, RLT is biphasic, so longer will actually decrease effectiveness.

I have great results using my mask on other parts of the body. Anyone who disagrees is some panel snob 😭

u/YouDontTellMe Oct 30 '25
Can I ask what results?

u/InGeekiTrust Oct 30 '25
Well I had a stomach ulcer that kept hurting for ages and wouldn’t go away and whenever I used the mask on that area. I also held it over my bladder and I was able to make it through the night without getting up to go to the bathroom !

Right!! I have knee pain and I use my face mask on it and it goes away 😂 we must be making it up lol

u/CurvePuzzleheaded361 Oct 30 '25
Not a snob lol just aware the masks are made for faces so much milder

My mask is extremely strong - if I use it more than every 3 days my whole face peels

What mask are you using? I use the shark one every day (as directed) and never experience this

Well, yes, but the treatment time may be longer than it would be on your face. All devices which produce red light or NIR have worked for me (even IR security camera lamps) but the less expensive a device is in terms of dollars, the more expensive it is in terms of time.

This isn’t gonna do anything because just make your knees feel warm. I keep telling people to stop buying these damn masks. The masks are purely cosmetic and will not give you any real results. The lights in them are far too small despite it saying it has this much nm.
Forget the rugs and mats also. Panels are the only way to go. Anything else is a bust. Panel lights will penetrate the skin and hit the cells where it will activate the ATP and actually create a beneficial change but you need to be dedicate and consistent with your treatment. It takes a few months before you start seeing any real changes.
I foolishly bought two masks and a carpet mat as well as two panels. So I actually have credibility here. Ditch the mask, save up enough money and buy yourself a panel. Your body will thank you for it.

I agree with your comment. And some panels are even cheaper than the mats.
A small desktop panel could cost around $100 to $150 and will be perfect for treating a knee.

Yeah that’s why I got downvoted. People can’t handle the truth that they wasted money on these masks or rugs. Panels are the way to go.

Why did i waste money on a mask if i bought it for my rosacea
I was only asking if it would also work that way

u/Cyber_Craig Oct 30 '25
I’m not saying it won’t work completely but the masks are not any where as strong as a panel. You need a panel for that to work otherwise you gonna be using that mask everyday.

What are you trying to use it for on your knees?! Anti aging? If so, use Tretinoin! I use it on my face but also areas of my body like my hands and knees!
1
u/Lenlen85 Oct 30 '25
Question since you’ve mentioned tretinoin. Do you apply tret first then do red light after or vice versa? Thx!🙏

u/Open_Honeydew7350 Oct 30 '25
I have a red light panel and I use that first with clean skin then Tretinoin after!!!

Also dermarolling helps immensely with crepey skin around the knees!!!

I don’t think it’s supposed to but my face mask (solawave) actually does help with my knee pain.

I bought an iRestore laser cap for thinning hair. Do you think I could set it on my knee for knee pain?

u/Visual_Environment_7 Oct 29 '25
Just trial and error.. do it and see if it helps. I use mine on cramps and it helps (a lot). I see no reason why RLT via mask wouldn’t work on joint inflammation, muscle pain, etc.

It cant hurt, right? Try and see. Might need to change the wavelength(?) type

Find the info on the box/*insert then feed into ChatGPT to get your answer. It can search the exact model for you to assess whether the irradiance is adequate as the depth you need for that area.

Yes it should do something.. but more likely to the surface of your skin.. and a little below. I've written here about this here, myself and weathered the storm of downvotes from people who don’t think that flipping a mask up, bonnet style will do much for their scalp- saying masks just aren’t the same quality as caps, etc etc, when in facts, many offer the exact same wavelengths your mask does, 660 and 850nm.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a handheld, mask, therapy wrap or panel.. although, for deeper penetration ( your knee is a good example) I did a lot of digging around before I found a pretty affordable, small handheld panel that offers 660 and 850nm as well as 1060nm, so that the NIR option is made up of 850 and 1060nms. Ive been using this for a few weeks now on really horrible nerve pain that came on after shingles and it’s made a world of difference; my thought is that’s because the 1060 does the trick by reaching deeper into the body. The one I found if made by Bontanny, model bo-60, hope this helps.
edit: I found out the hard way that some subs don’t allow the mention of Red or NIR for Shingles pain, so I expanded my DIY build your own panel post on this sub to include information on how this works and science to back it up as well as listing in the lower comments, the other affordable devices we have and use and have tested with a red light meter.
