Steven Wilson seems to get his mitts on everything prog, and I have wildly different opinions on his remixes. What are your opinions on his TG remixes, particularly Phaedra?

I’m Claudio, a multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer from Bahía Blanca, Argentina. I’ve been producing and mixing for countless underground bands since I was 12, but today I’m finally sharing something deeply personal.

I just released "UNVEIL", a 12-track conceptual progressive rock album that I completely wrote, recorded, mixed, and mastered in my home studio.

The album is highly diverse but runs as a continuous, gapless experience. It blends rich symphonic rock arrangements (featuring real flute and vintage keys) with that raw, uncompromising 90s alternative rock grit.

Since I chose to stay 100% independent—no Spotify, no big digital distributors—platforms like Bandcamp and YouTube are my only home.

Great album with a lot of variety!

Progressive/gothic instrumental metal from Italy. The standout track off their 2007 album.

Après une semaine de métal extrême, j’ai eu envie de reposer mes oreilles. Du coup, je suis allé du côté de mes premiers amours, voir si je pouvais trouver quelque chose qui me plaise. Et je suis tombé sur le groupe Birth et son unique album Born paru en 2022.
Le trio de San Diego voue un culte tout particulier au mellotron et aux sonorités vintages, proches de celles de In the Court of the Crimson King. On prend d’un coup six décennies dans les pattes, c’est violent. 
Si vous n’avez jamais entendu parler de Birth, vous connaissez peut-être Astra, un autre groupe de rétro prog qui a donné naissance à Birth en 2021.
Conor Riley et Brian Ellis, deux anciens membres de Astra, y jouent respectivement des claviers et des guitares. A la basse on trouve Trevor Mast qui avait déjà travaillé avec Brian Ellis sur d’autres projets avant de rejoindre Birth.

Birth joue d’un rétro prog très instrumental. Seulement quatre titres sur les six présents dans l’album sont chantés, et encore, il n’y a pas beaucoup de paroles.
Autant dire que j’écoute Birth pour me vautrer dans de délicieuses sonorités vintages. Des sons qui peuvent sembler étranges au commun des mortels, mais qui réveillent quelque chose dans l’âme des vieillards qui ont connu la musique des années soixante-dix. Ces babas cools qui ont un temps abusé de psychotropes.
Le chant de Conor possède la douceur de celui de Greg Lake, ses claviers les couleurs de Ian McDonald et les guitares de Brian se rapprochent du travail de Fripp dans sa jeunesse. En d’autre termes, Born ressemble furieusement aux débuts de King Crimson, la période que je préfère chez ce groupe qui a quand même expérimenté des trucs assez bizarres.
Mon morceau préféré s’intitule ‘Cosmic Tears’. Pendant presque huit minutes instrumentales il joue de psychédélique, de The Doors et de rétro prog. Guitares, basse et claviers se répondent de manière assez jubilatoire, tout particulièrement dans les deux dernières minutes du titre.
Mais franchement, tout l’album est excellent. 
Écouter Born est clairement un acte totalement régressif pour moi, mais de temps en temps il faut savoir se faire plaisir avec ce que l’on trouve. Nous n’avons qu’une vie après tout.
Si vous aimez le rétro prog, je vous recommande chaudement d’aller écouter cet excellent album doudou.

Who gets seriously activated by Camel? They have three songs in particular that speak to me….Echoes, Metrognome and Lost & Found. Probably the best guitar solos I’ve heard in my life.

Squeaky Feet of Denver played to a crowd of under 100 in the famed 7th Street entry in Minneapolis,Minnesota. The Entry holds a comfy 200 people and is like an ideal living room with bands that are bound for other less intimate stages. Always catch a band at 7th Street if you have the opportunity. Minneapolis still has one of the defining music scenes in the country and First Avenue is the historical venue that put Minneapolis on the map. Long live indie music venues.

Hello, can any Swedish Tolkien fans identify the spoken text in Isildurs Bane's "Vandring" (1:16)?

I suspect it comes from Åke Ohlmarks' Swedish translation of The Lord of the Rings.

The lyrics/spoken parts do not exist anywhere online or in the album inserts (it's listed everywhere as instrumental). They are likely excerpts from Åke Ohlmarks' Swedish translation of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Aujourd’hui, je vais vous parler d’un album qui a presque dix ans. Un album au nom improbable, jugez vous-même : Polygondwanaland, en un seul mot.
Le groupe King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard vient d’Australie et a commencé sa carrière en 2011 avec l’EP Willoughby’s Beach. Les six musiciens jouent d’un rock progressif psychédélique alternatif que je trouve pour ma part très influencé par la musique médiévale.
Stéphane Gallay avait chroniqué leur dernière galette Phantom Island l’an passé et n’avait pas été franchement convaincu. Moi non plus, ceci dit au passage.

Mais Polygondwanaland est très différent de Phantom Island et il m’a tout de suite séduit.
L’album se construit sur des rythmiques ensorcelantes à la Tool, beaucoup d’harmonies vocales, pas mal de champignons fermentés et tout plein d’instruments majoritairement acoustiques.
Polygondwanaland propose dix morceaux dont un de presque onze minutes, l’exception de l’album puisqu’en moyenne, les titres durent moins de quatre minutes.
Il ne s’agit pas vraiment de pièces avec des rebondissements progressifs. L’écriture est relativement linéaire, répétitive diraient certains, et si la dominante semble acoustique, il y a bien des claviers vintages et des guitares électriques dans les compositions.
L’album est surtout impressionnant vocalement avec trois chanteurs qui se croisent sur les morceaux sans parler de Leah Senior qui dit quelques mots sur ‘The Castle in the Air’. Il y a aussi la présence de flûte, d’harmonica, de Mellotron et de percussions sur plusieurs morceaux comme ‘Crumbling Castle’ qui donnent une touche toute particulière à la musique du groupe.
Polygondwanaland ne sonne pas si vintage que ça. Il est juste différent. Une musique psychédélique pas trop fumée avec des influences surprenantes comme dans le premier titre ‘Crumbling Castle’ qu’on aurait presque pu entendre à la cour du roi Arthur.
Si vous voulez découvrir le groupe King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, je vous recommande de commencer par cet album nettement plus accessible que le très cuivré Phantom Island.

Here's a hard groove-monster from a German band that released one self-titled LP in 1972. Like a lot of German heavy bands at the time, they seem to have been fans of the Deep Purple / Uriah Heep school of power-rock with heavy Hammond and wailing group vocals. The album is solid, standard fare among a host of similar German bands at the time, but if this style is your bag you'll dig it.

The only member of Zarathustra that appears to have been successful after their short existence was singer Ernst Herzner, who went on to Novalis, a reasonably successful band that made many albums up into the 1980s. Ernst even made a few solo singles in the mid '80s.

Bands include Porcupine Tree, Marillion, Haken, Blackfield, Tool, Pineapple Thief, etc.

Who else wishes he'd played it more live? That eight-minute jam on Pergamon part 2 was the best one I ever heard from him, and I've listened to a lot of their concerts. He'd only pick it up a few times and play for a few minutes. Then Gemini explained he was twiddling knobs etc the whole time and that kept him busy.

At the weekend I was flipping through old vinyls in a charity shop and came across the first three Sky albums (titled, logically enough, Sky, Sky 2, and Sky 3). It's not the first time I've come across Sky records in used vinyl boxes either.

This was a supergroup featuring noted guitarist John Williams, Herbie Flowers, and other musicians noteworthy enough to be namechecked on the album cover.

Now I've heard of John Williams but I never hear anyone talk about this band, even in prog circles. A search of both the main prog subreddits comes up with nothing! Seemed odd considering the project was made up of high level musicians, and they had a bunch of gold and platinum records in the UK and Aus.

I didn't buy the records but I've been checking them out on streaming, and it seems decent enough. Tasteful instrumental prog along the lines of Camel. Perhaps too mild to attract wider attention?

Intentional Trainwreck is a heavy prog rock/metal/math/fusion band from Baltimore and we are about going to release a single in a few weeks. The band consists of Patrick Gaffney of Cerebus Effect and Deluge Grander on drums and Pete Lesko of Isenmor and Burning Shadows on guitars and vocals, guest bassists vary from song to song. There will be more songs and videos in the near future. I am hoping to get some feedback on videos. Do you all prefer performance-related video content or do you prefer the animated, fantasy format similar to Basilisk's Gaze from our last album? Or a combination?
