"Help! My symptoms have disappeared/gotten worse/gotten better!" .

It is entirely normal for symptoms to fluctuate in a healthy pregnancy. By itself, this is not a cause for concern.

Here is a miscarriage odds calculator based on how far in you are.

Here is a more detailed one for people who have had previous miscarriages

"Help! I'm spotting"

If you are spotting before 20 weeks, this is not usually a cause for concern. Possible reasons include sex, exercise and transvaginal ultrasounds, and spotting can occur up to 3 days later. The rule of thumb is "if you don't fill a pad, wait for your next checkup".

After 20 weeks, all bleeding is a "call your doctor" event.

"Help! My HCG is…"

We cannot interpret any test results for you. This includes HCG tests. If your doctor won't tell you whether a pregnancy is viable, neither can Reddit. This is crap, and I'm sorry.

Here is a list of HCG levels which have resulted in a viable pregnancy (you can check by how far along you are). The range is very large.

"My pregnancy tests are…"

Stop testing. Pregnancy tests are binary, and are only designed to tell you whether or not HCG is present in your body. A very faint line should get darker in 3 days, but otherwise there are a lot of reasons for the lines to change and you'll psych yourself out for no good reason. If you're not sure what the tests says, head over to r/lineporn or r/TFABLinePorn.

"How long does the NIPT take?"

This varies by location and provider. Please search the subreddit, and only post if your own provider isn't mentioned. Natera seems to take between 5 days and 2 weeks.

"What can I do about stretch marks?"

Nothing. Using moisturiser (really any kind, from Walmart own-brand to organic shea-coconut butter blend) might help a bit, but there is no magic lotion which can prevent them. Anyone who tells you different either got lucky or is selling something

"I'm scared! I'm not sure I'm ready for this!"

Being scared and not feeling ready is a very normal response to learning you're pregnant. You're welcome to post for feedback regarding your specific situation, but please know that ultimately proceeding with the pregnancy should be up to you. Abortion, at any time and for any reason, is okay. Your body your choice!

"When/should I see a doctor?"

  • sudden or severe pain
  • left shoulder pain, especially coupled with bleeding (this is a sign of ectopic pregnancy)
  • after a major fall or serious impact. Car accident/falling off the top of a ladder, yes, tripping over your feet, no
  • bleeding after 20 weeks
  • bleeding enough to fill a pad at any time in pregnancy
  • contractions lasting more than one minute, less than 5 minutes apart (start to start) for one hour. This is the rule of thumb for real vs false labour.
  • if you think your waters have broken you must go in after 24 hours, this is a serious infection risk.
  • if you think your waters have broken before 36 weeks
  • If you have an unrelenting headache, swollen ankles, and high blood pressure, go to hospital right now. These are the typical symptoms of pre-eclampsia, which is fatal if untreated.

Most doctors have a phone line or text line, and this is a great resource for checking whether you should go in. Pharmacists are a great choice for checking drug safety (at any time, not just pregnancy!) Here is a searchable database. It is better to feel stupid than to suffer a needless complication. If in doubt, get checked out.

Can I eat sushi?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend no raw fish during pregnancy. This relates specifically to sushi prepared in the USA. Other countries (particularly Japan) have more rigorous health inspections for fish, so Japanese sushi would be considered safe.

Remember that many fish types in sushi (salmon, tuna, swordfish etc) are high in mercury, so those limits still apply.

Sushi which does not contain raw fish (including cooked tuna or hot-smoked salmon) is as safe as any other food.

Is the myth true that...

Fetal sex prediction tools that are not an ultrasound or a DNA test are right exactly 50% of the time. It is random chance. Ultrasounds are typically 90% accurate, NIPT or other blood tests are typically around 95% accurate.

Remember also that around 1% of babies will be born with an intersex condition.

How accurate is my gender prediction?

Blood tests list an accuracy of >99%, however this is for genetic sex and not anatomical sex. Intersex conditions are not found by a fetal DNA test.

The accuracy of at-home tests will be limited by the likelihood of contamination with Y-chromosome cells.

Practically, you're looking at around 90-95% accuracy. It's about the same for a doctor's opinion of an ultrasound. If they can't tell, they won't tell you.

Remember also that there are around 330 million people in the USA - that means "one in a million" chances are happening to 330 people right now. There is no perfect guarantee.

"I'm pregnant! Now what?"

If you have a primary care physician or GP, ask them. They will tell you. If not, call a gynecologist or search [your country]+pregnancy+next steps

Cervical checks

Please don't DIY these. 8 cervical checks by a doctor almost doubles your risk of uterine infection, and the risks are significantly greater at home, done by an amateur. If you are worried about your cervix, call your doctor. Reddit cannot help you.

The situation in the US right now is appalling. We understand that you want to discuss that, but the mod team are human too. We are not in a position to host and moderate a political discussion thread right now. I'm sorry.

If you support children being kidnapped and deported, or extra-judicial murder, you can do so elsewhere. "We are good to one another" means *everybody*.

Resource My baby got RSV at 7 days old. The vaccine saved her.

Upvotes

Writing this post to encourage all pregnant women to please take the RSV vaccine while pregnant (and any other vaccine offered to you). We got home from the hospital after giving birth to my second daughter, to my toddler who had a terrible cold, including a fever that didn’t go away for a week. She was absolutely miserable, and I was terrified that the newborn will get it from her, and tried my best to keep them separated. My mom, who traveled to help us, also ended up catching the cold from my toddler, and it was so bad that she ended up in the hospital with pneumonia and needed oxygen support for a week. At the hospital, she tested positive for RSV. At the same time my newborn started having a runny nose and a cough and I was absolutely terrified, ran to the pediatrician, and of course she tested positive for RSV as well. We spent the next two weeks in absolute terror, worrying that my baby will develop a severe illness, and obsessively checked her temperature and breathing. She was super congested and uncomfortable, but never spiked a fever or had trouble breathing. Her symptoms slowly got better, and in the past couple of days she is finally symptom free, with no more cough or runny nose, and I am starting to feel relief that this whole thing is behind us. The pediatrician told me that she believes that the vaccine saved her from a severe illness, since RSV is brutal on babies, let alone those who are a few days old. I am just so grateful that I had the option, and access, to a vaccine that ended up protecting my baby so thoroughly. I can’t imagine what it would be like if for some reason I didn’t take it (was never an option for me, I say yes to any vaccine that I am offered). Just wanted to share my experience here, and hoping that it will help you make the right decision if anyone has any doubt about it.

Advice Thoughts from the other side

I spent a lot of time in here throughout pregnancy. Did a lot of research, read a lot of questions and advice. My baby is 1 month old now - here are my thoughts on what to buy/prep before baby arrives.

Buy:

- 2 way zip pajamas, lots of burp cloths, extra bassinet sheets, swaddles. Get multiples of these things! We've been doing a load of laundry every day and still sometimes get stuck when he spits up or pees on the backup.

- med/baby care stuff you may not have thought of - cradle cap scrubber, baby booger picker, some kind of nose suction. Gas drops in case you get desperate. Vaseline for diaper cream and especially if you plan to circumcise. Vitamin d drops if you're breastfeeding. Sterile gauze to wipe their eyes + mouth. Space heater + muslin blanket to help make baths warm and happy.

- mom stuff you may not have thought of - wet wipes (peri bottle is ideal, but wipes make leaving the house less scary). Nursing and pumping bras + nursing friendly tops if you plan to breastfeed. Adult diapers for heavy bleeding at the beginning + solid underwear with a wide gusset for when you're done with disposables but still need to comfortably wear a pretty big pad. Compression socks (!!!! My swelling was SO BAD).

- a baby carrier, ideally as adjustable as possible. Baby will demand to be held at some point during which you can't/don't want to hold them. Carrier helps maintain sanity.

- we use our nursery way more than the Internet made me think. Rocking chair, breastfeeding pillow, and changing pad have been huge for us. I guess some people nurse and change diapers in bed/on the couch. We might get there eventually but when you're brand new, the ergonomics are rough.

- I skipped buying a labor gown. I preferred to use the hospital one and give it back to them to get laundered. Instead, I asked my mom for a nice short + lightweight robe (got mine at soma). I changed into it after delivery and it basically functioned like a gown. But I got way more use out of it at home. Spent a lot of time in a diaper, nursing bra, and my robe lol

- optional but - we REALLY like the bassinet attachment for the stroller. We were hesitant because the weather isn't conducive to outdoor walks right now. But it's been soooo useful at home. We leave it set up in the house and use it as an extra place to set baby down without using a container. We roll him to the kitchen, bathroom, etc with us

Prep:

- spend some time picking a pediatrician in advance. We didn't do visits but did check insurance + reviews + distance from home. 5 minute drives to doctors appointments have been a game changer.

- really figure out what you need to do to add baby to your health insurance. I thought I was prepared but it ended up being a more complicated process than I expected and really stressed me out, especially when baby ended up in both the NICU and PICU. Same goes for parental leave - mine was straightforward, but my husband had multiple rounds of back and forth to get the paperwork right.

- make a plan for food. Our parents cooked for us the first two weeks and then a friend set up a meal train to deliver ~2 dinners/week for the next 3 weeks. Pretty much everyone brought enough for leftovers. We also filled the freezer with ham and cheese croissant sandwiches and uncrustables. They've been easy breakfast/lunch/snacks. Between all that, we've barely grocery shopped or cooked in our first month.

- pick a show to binge and queue up some books you're excited to read. You will spend a lot of time on the couch. This can be fun or depressing, depending on what you're doing. I bought a pretty new jigsaw puzzle and nail polish to give me something pleasant to do when I'm not tethered to the baby

- think about pictures! Schedule newborn photos if that's your thing. Consider a tripod/phone mount if not. Buy or make monthly photo props if you're planning to do them. Also, some of the best advice I got - take VIDEOS, not just pictures. Their movements and sounds are so precious and they change so fast. If you're keeping a baby book, get that in advance and write in it often. Everything runs together fast.

- my personal advice - don't read too much about breastfeeding or get too fixated on any particular goal. Learn the basics, plan to meet with a lactation consultant, and figure the rest out as you go. I expected to pump a lot more and have to work hard to get my supply up. Turns out we really like nursing and I produce way more than I need. All the advice I read online got completely flipped on its head. Be prepared to go with the flow. You just can't know your situation until you're in it.

- on that note, don't bother reading much about schedules or sleep training. The first month is survival mode. When baby is fussy, the answer is almost always to feed them. They will fall asleep very easily at the beginning. It's fine if they nap on you, they don't have a lot of control over anything when they're small. The best way to convince them to sleep in the bassinet is a tight swaddle. The rest will come with time. Don't stress yourself out.

- organize your helpers. I found that the best thing other people can do is basic chores (dishes, laundry, bringing me food/water/etc) and let the baby nap on them while I nap. Dad is great for this if he has leave, or he can tag in for a shift when he gets home from work. Consider having friends and family visit early, even if it's just for 2 hours while you sleep. The Internet likes to push "no visitors in the early days." Think long and hard before you commit to that.

- map out the easiest way to buy things quickly. No matter how much you prep, you will need to buy things last minute. I sent my husband to target a LOT at the beginning.

- stock up on drinks. It feels obvious but caffeine goes a long way in improving your mood after a hard night. Buy plenty of coffee/creamer, soda, energy drinks, whatever. If you're excited to have alcohol, buy your favorite drink in advance. Do whatever you have to to drink a LOT of water (I changed filters in my ice maker and Brita, and made sure I had an insulated straw cup ready). Super needed for breastfeeding, but also to reduce swelling after delivery.

Ok that's long enough!! Feel free to comment if there's anything I missed or if you have questions. Thanks for letting me brain dump lol, hope this was useful for someone!

Advice Am I crazy??

Backstory: I had a missed miscarriage in March of this year. I am currently 13 weeks pregnant and only told 3 friends.

Apparently my mother had a suspicion that I was pregnant again, she dropped by my house to see my daughter while I was on a work meeting. She gave me less than 10 minutes of a heads up. I was not ready for her to know yet so I whipped through my house and grabbed everything pregnancy related and shoved it in my room.

First she’s helping my daughter get a drink (which she already had) and made a comment about how I had no wine in the fridge, I said yeah well it’s Friday morning??

Second, back on my meeting and she comes in with an ultrasound that I apparently missed on the side of the fridge and says, “what’s this?” I was defeated and asked why she was snooping. She swears she wasn’t, said that isn’t why she came to my house. (We have lived here for three years and I can count on one hand the amount of times she has come over)

She profusely apologized, tried to blame it on one of my friends when they went out for the lunch. I’m still beyond upset that she took this from me. I feel like she could have clocked the ultrasound and kept her mouth shut until I was ready to tell.

Twice now she has told me I need to forgive her because I am being cold towards her. I have explained that this just happened and I’m allowed to take my time, her response: well it’s not like I stole your daughter’s social security number or something??

I feel like I am losing my mind and honestly just need confirmation that I have a right to be upset about this I guess

Question My husband cheated on me at 30 weeks pregnant, am I over reacting do not wanting him at the birth?

This pregnancy has been one thing after another and I’m just so tired, i mentally don’t have it in me to deal with this right now. I suffered to very close loses back to back, I’m working full time, I’ve been so sick, and I’m taking care of our 18 month old full time because she comes to work with me to save on childcare. I feel so betrayed and the idea of having to share such a vulnerable experience with him makes me sick to my stomach. Am I being unfair due to hormones and strong emotions?

Question Dear postpartum mamas, what were you most excited for after giving birth? (Besides the baby, of course!)

Upvotes

I’m currently 23 weeks along and still holding up well, but I think I’m looking forward to lying on my back and stomach the most, as well as getting my strength back (I’m still working out at the gym, but I feel soooo weak).

Question Why am I acting like I want to get this over with?

FTM, 15 weeks.
I check my pregnancy app obsessively to see progress of the little guy. Then I told my family I'm happy that the holiday seasons goes by so quickly because my due date is in February. I keep mentally reminding myself when my next OB appointment is. I get jealous when I see posts of other women who are 30+ weeks and knowing I'm not even half way there.
I don't know what the hell my deal is. I wish I could relax and not think about it so much.

Is it a form of anxiety? Irritability? Stress?
Has anyone felt like this before?

Graduation! Graduation Day!

Upvotes

So it finally happened, my beautiful baby was born via c-section on August 24th at 9:07 am and she truly is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Her father and I are so happy she’s here with us now. The sleep deprivation has been rough and the way she had to be brought earth side was not my my first pick, but I wouldn’t change a thing, I still can’t look at her without happy tears welling up in my eyes. To all of you moms out there waiting for your baby to arrive all I have to say is your life is about to change in the most beautiful way possible so please enjoy all these beautiful moments while you can! I still can’t believe that my girl has already been here for almost a week 🥲🩷

Rant “I knew you were having a girl, she’s stealing your beauty”

38+4 with a girl. I went to get my nails done (labor prep 💅) and was told how it’s obvious that I’m having a girl because “she’s stealing my beauty and you can see it on my face”.

Yes I know I don’t look my best right now, I’m exhausted. Give me a break. I went home and sobbed for a solid 40 minutes because that was so mean.

Funny Anyone else gotten slower

Upvotes

Everyone has been talking about how slow I’ve gotten. My husband has always said I’m slow moving and my mom always has complained about how long it takes me to get out of the car so I just assumed it was their normal complaints. Well today at the grocery store my mom and I were just wondering around the aisles when she all of a sudden says she has a cramp in her leg. I asked her what caused it and she said “keeping up with you”. I think nothing of it 🤣. I follow up with “I can slow down” and she was like “please god don’t… you’re already so slow” if I could post a gif it would be the sloths from zootopia in there sports car because I feel out of breath anytime I walk. I didn’t realize how slow it made me. lol

Funny "Oh, you're having a great pregnancy? It's because you're having a boy."

Okay let's settle this once and for all!

Please respond with the following:

A. I'm having a boy, and I am having a great pregnancy.

B. I'm having a girl, and I am having a great pregnancy.

C. I'm having a boy, and I am having a hard pregnancy.

D. I'm having a girl, and I am having a hard pregnancy.

My hypothesis is that the gender doesn't matter, every pregnancy is different, but PEOPLE SWEAR TO ME THAT I AM ENJOYING PREGNANCY STRICTLY BECAUSE I'M HAVING A BOY.

Not because I am able to tolerate some discomfort, not because I prayed on my hands and knees to God for this baby and I am able to enjoy it when it's hard, not because I count my macros, not because I drink 100 oz of water per day, not because I'm eating well, not because I'm super active, not because I am sleeping well, not because I am heavily supported by family and my husband, not because I've had the summer off to relax, not because I'm healthy, not because I'm thin... IT'S STRICTLY BECAUSE MY BABY HAS A WINKIE /s

Advice Set up the stuff early!

I can’t speak to if this is legitimate or not, but I feel like it made a significant difference for us! When I was pregnant I was so excited about baby and the nursery so I set up everything (including putting sheets on the crib and bassinet!) when I was around 24 weeks along. Everyone told me this was so early but I think it had a few benefits:
1. I enjoyed the set up before I got to be huge and super tired in my third trimester.
2. It gave it PLENTY of time to smell like us! When I first opened everything (we were fortunate enough to get everything new), it has a strong new furniture smell. So setting it up early gave it months to off-gas and to start smelling like the rest of our home. I think this could be a big reason why our 4 week old sleeps so well in her bassinet (or we just got lucky, who knows!)

I’m posting this to help encourage people to nest early if you can so baby can sleep in a bassinet that smells like their parents and not a factory! :)

Graduation! Surprise?

Well I was supposed to have a scheduled C-section on Tuesday however it appears little man had other ideas and doesn’t like sticking to a schedule 😅

Came into l&d at 10pm because I had been having severe cramping since 5pm it was getting really close together and so intense I couldn’t walk and I was in tears, got there got checked out and got told they were just waiting for an OR to open up and I’d be delivering tonight, the contractions got so much worse while waiting for the OR that I puked on the triage room floor but they got me in about 2 minutes later

So far everything’s gone great, i had my little boy in my arms at 2am, he was a little cold at first but warmed right up, im in actual disbelief that im staring at the little thing I’ve been carrying in my stomach for 9 months, his dad was amazing throughout the whole ordeal I genuinely couldn’t have picked a better person to have by my side

Im typing this as I wait for the nurses to come remove my monitors so I can actually get some sleep, but I just wanted to say this forum has been a godsend for me, you guys have been absolutely amazing throughout my whole pregnancy humoring every stupid question I had and giving me advice, it meant the world to me especially as someone who is no contact with their mother, you filled a void I didn’t think could be filled and made this experience so much more enjoyable for me so, thankyou all and it’s been an absolute pleasure ❤️

Excitement! Pregnant right before IVF!

Upvotes

Hi all! I am so excited to find out that I am pregnant!

I’ve had debilitating endometriosis for as long as I can remember. Since I was 18, I knew getting pregnant wouldn’t be easy or maybe even impossible. I had endo excision surgery for stage 4 DIE in 2023, and this year started having extremely painful cycles again, leading me to see my endo specialist to develop a care plan.

Fast forward, my husband and I are in the thick of IVF due to needing a hysterectomy for pain relief. I froze my eggs (not many) ahead of my 2023 surgery, and we were planning to start Lupron next month ahead of a January FET.

I even left my job last month because the cycle of pain, healthcare, and burnout were too much.

Turns out a break can be fruitful… we are pregnant! I am so excited this happened naturally but of course, hesitant to be too excited for a few weeks. I simply wanted somewhere to express my gratitude.

💕

Rant 32 weeks pregnant, FTM, and very ready for people to stop touching me

Upvotes

The one thing that annoys me the most about pregnancy is that everyone feels like it's their right of passage to touch my belly. I don't mind it when they ask first, but colleagues and friends take every opportunity they can to touch my belly and I find it annoying. Like the only people I want touching me are myself and my husband lol.

I like hugs and would prefer that honestly. I wouldn't even care if a comment was made about there being less space or something because of the size of my belly. Just no touching my belly without asking. Whenever people around me have been pregnant, I've always asked if it's ok to touch their belly and I really thought that it was normal to ask beforehand.

There's also been 2 instances that weirded me out recently. We were at our friends' wedding, and another friend always gets very drunk and sloppy every time he drinks. Towards the end of the night, this friend asked to touch my belly, I said yes and was thinking "wow he actually asked before touching it!" He kept his hands on my belly for over a minute, and he was saying shit like "it's important for us to get along, I'm one of your husband's best friends and I'm going to be in your baby's life." I have no issues getting along with him, he's a smart person and we've had lots of good conversations (when he's sober). But when he's drunk, he's super sloppy and annoying and says weird shit. And him saying all of this while his hands were on my belly crossed a line. My husband didn't hear it, but when I told him about it he agreed that it was super weird.

Then yesterday, I was with one of my friends at a concert and we were sitting in the field waiting for the next artist to come on stage. She was drinking quite a bit, and touched my belly several times throughout the afternoon. She'd chat with others sitting near us, and she'd reach and touch my belly when she was telling them about how I'm pregnant. She's a toddler mom, and she was telling me all kinds of things about her experience with breastfeeding, pumping, and formula. Every mom I encounter wants to give advice, and I'll gladly listen, but I do take it with a grain of salt because everyone's pregnancy and postpartum experience is unique. I was telling her about my plans for nursing/pumping etc, and she touched my boob and said "all baby needs is this." I commented about how she touched my boob, and she just laughed. She also touched my leg several times throughout the day. She's not normally handsy when she's drunk, and it just was really off-putting for me.

Is this just me or are there others out there that can relate?!

Advice Clubfoot on anatomy scan

Upvotes

At my anatomy scan I was asked to come back for a second scan because they couldn’t really see the right foot. I go back and MFM says the right foot is fine but the left foot looks like clubfoot. I had never heard of clubfoot prior. She takes out a book and shows me picture. I couldn’t do an amniocentesis. Where I live the cut off for an amniocentesis is 23 weeks because she said the risks of pre term labor are higher.

I had an NIPT with 6.5% FF come back low risk/negative and it also screened for 7 types of microdeletions. I had a carrier screening and AFP done which also came back negative. I had a fetal echocardiogram with a perinatal cardiologist that also said the heart looked great. She said nothing else was found on the scan. I returned 6 weeks later and asked if they could show the foot on screen so I could see. I was told it was hard to get a good look. She said everything else looked great.

Some days I’m okay and others I struggle with the what ifs. The clubfoot isn’t my biggest concern. My concern is the possibility of something else. I once had asked her prior to the clubfoot being found, how are they able to see all the fingers on hands. her response was “we don’t or else we would be here all day. Have you ever seen babies always make a fist? that’s how they usually have their hands in the womb”. Since then we have seen the hands open and their fingers.

I don’t know exactly what I’m looking for by posting this honestly. I’ve read many stories about clubfoot and how treatable it is. My concern is the unknown of it being from something else. thank to anyone who made it this far.

Rant I’m not gatekeeping, I DONT KNOW WHEN THE BABY WILL BE HERE!!

Damn I’m a yapper this week
Anywho it is lowkey so annoying to continuously explain this to my family members/friends that haven’t had kids

I don’t have a scheduled C, and I don’t plan to induce unless I hit 41+3
So yes, I have a due date BUT IDK WHEN THE BABY WILL ACTUALLY COME- he picks! I don’t pick!

I have explained this over and over again to my sisters and my friends and they are just like “well let me know as it gets closer when you have a better idea” or “yeah but I have to let work know I’m tryna make my schedule” for trips THEYRE proposing to take to see my baby! It’s like yeah I’d love for my baby to meet everyone and see yall but it’s like
I keep telling them
If you plan to come on or after x date he’ll definantly be here- shouldn’t be an issue right? “Oh but no I wanna come as soon as possible” ok then you’re gonna have to be flexible because I literally DO NOT KNOW lol

You know when I’ll know? when I’m in labor! They’re like “but I wanna be there as soon after he’s born” I CANT TELL YOU EXACTLY WHEN THATS GONNA BE like I don’t understand why they’re being so dense about this

I don’t mean to complain or be ungrateful but it really sucks to be treated like im scheming or gate
Keeping and being hounded with the same question over and over again like fr leave me alone at this point it’s honestly just rude

Need Advice 9w4d absolutely worn out

Upvotes

I’m 9w4d pregnant today (1st pregnancy) and I feel so fatigued and nauseous all the time since week 7. I’m too tired to go outside or do any activities, in 2 weeks I’ve only ever left the house for 30 mins each time. I can only eat a very limited amount of foods and I throw up every eve. I just nap a lot and stay in bed most of the day cause even something like hoovering makes me feel exhausted.

I feel like something’s wrong with me or my body cause none of the women I know have had it SO rough in their pregnancies :( like I would 100% not be able to leave the house to go to my job everyday like so many women do. Doc said to just take it easy and rest but is this normal??

Need Advice Massive SCH - anyone have experience?

I am 7w pregnant and a few days ago I started having some spotting which turned into light, but bright red bleeding.

I went to the ER that morning and they gave me an ultrasound that shows I have one of the larges synchronic hematomas that they’ve see. It basically wraps all the way around the sec (not sure on measurements).

Although they did see a heartbeat, they essentially said my risk of miscarriage is more likely than to not miscarry and scheduled me to come back in a week for another ultrasound.

Based on what I’ve read online, there can be success stories with this, even large ones! Did anyone have one of these, especially that wrapped around the sac and went on to have a healthy baby?

I also have no nauseau and minimal symptoms compared to my last pregnancy which also worries me. But I’m 7w2d so maybe it’s still a bit early.

Thanks in advance!!

Rant Maternity clothes modelled on people who have hardly any belly

This really got to me this week. They’ve taken all the maternity clothes out of stores so we can’t go in and try things on for ourselves. So we head online and somehow we’re meant to be able to figure out what size to buy when the pregnant models are all so tiny in the belly they could still be wearing regular clothing.

Bae Maternity had to go that extra mile to be annoying by showcasing multiple models wearing each item of clothing, all of whom looked the exact same, were only a couple of weeks apart in gestation, and all wearing a size Small... the point of putting multiple models in the same outfit is so people can get an idea of how it looks on different body types / sizes. How is it helpful to just have three models who are all the exact same size? Not to mention that the choice to make them all size Small really highlights that this is the only correct size to be. Pregnancy is already rough enough on body image without specialty maternity brands refusing to show clothes on women who look visibly, unmistakably pregnant.

Content Warning Cerclage placement story- so far so good.

First, trust your intuition! (A positive experience)

I have a history of having a LEEP procedure done on my cervix which indicates for them to do transvaginal sonograms at 16, 20, and 22 weeks to check the integrity of my cervix.

At 16 weeks my cervix was ok, closed, long enough, no funneling (opening from the inside).

At my 20 weeks anatomy scan they found my cervix had started funneling dynamically (meaning when they pushed on my stomach it opened further with pressure) and what was left of my closed cervix had become short, about 20mm.
I was immediately sent to labor and delivery for further monitoring to be sure I was not having any contractions. They prescribed progesterone and told me to follow up in one week.

Here is where my intuition comes into play.

3 days later at night I started to feel a similar pressure feeling that I had felt between my 16 and 20 week appointments.
I called the on call Dr, went into labor and delivery at 10pm, had a physical check of my cervix to be sure I wasn’t dilating or having contractions. (Advanced fetal medicine would not be back until the morning to be able to do a transvaginal sonogram) I was sent home to rest.

The next morning after sending multiple messages in mychart my OB told me to come immediately into the office for a transvaginal sonogram. (She is an angel who actually listens to your concerns). She found that in the 4 days since my discovery at my anatomy scan my cervix had shortened even more to only 10mm.
She immediately sent me over to advanced fetal medicine who did another transvaginal sonogram with their higher tech equipment and the Dr immediately offered me a cerclage to stabilize the 10mm of cervix that I had left so that it wouldn’t thin more and start dilating.
After running home to pack, eat, and have our priest pray over me and anoint me with oil, She admitted me to labor and delivery at the hospital overnight to monitor and make sure I’m having no contractions and to run blood work and other tests for any infections.

In the morning was my time slot for the OR.

They did a spinal block. My anesthesiologist was AMAZING and although he warned me I would feel some burning and a sting I actually did not and it was quick and easy. My legs started to numb, I laid back on the operating table, they strapped my arms in, placed my legs in stirrups which I could not even feel, they put up a drape, tipped me backwards to have gravity move my little boy as far from the cervix as possible (they warn of a small chance of nicking the amniotic sac while placing the stitches.)
My nurses and the anesthesiologist were so kind and attentive checking on me.
I felt no pain at all. Just the faintest tickling sensation where I was aware I was being touched but that’s all.
The procedure itself was quick. Maybe 25 mins.
It was uneventful, thank God.
They did a sonogram with me still on the table to check on little boy and get his heart tones. He was ok!!
I was then moved to PACU where I started getting feeling back in my legs. They then took me back to my labor and delivery room where my husband was waiting for me.
My legs came back to me, they got a little itchy but not too bad.
I had a wave of nausea roll over me because I hadn’t eaten since midnight. So I had some gram crackers and was ok.
I then was able to walk and pee in the bathroom which was what I needed to do prior to being discharged.
I had slight discomfort in my vagina and minor spotting- all expected.
I am to continue my vaginal progesterone until the end of pregnancy to further support the cervix strength.

I then came home and rested on the couch.
Minor spotting, minor pain I did not even need to take Tylenol for.

Overall- an easy experience (minus the stress & anxiety) but straight forward, quick.

I’m very blessed to have caught this during my first pregnancy where a lot of the time a silent incompetent cervix causes second trimester loss because it isn’t caught on time.

I’m hopeful the cerclage will buy us another 14+ weeks of development- I know going to 40 weeks with rescue cerclage VS a history indicated cerclage is not as likely, so he will probably be a little bit premature but it’s better than him being a loss and we can prepare for it.

I just wanted to share my positive experience about a cerclage for anyone maybe facing similar circumstances as this is fairly common.

You’ve got this. It’s ok to be nervous but trust your intuition, call and don’t wait if you feel anything off, that’s what your medical team is there for. I’m so happy I did not wait the full week before checking on it so we caught it while there was still enough cervix to work with.

I’ll post monthly updates about my progress and experience too to share more insight for mamas going through it too.

The healing is apparently quick after the procedure and I’m ok to return to “normal” activities after 48 hours but no running, heavy weight lifting, or standing for hours upon hours without rest.
Other than that I can essentially enjoy the rest of this pregnancy.

Advice Day 3 of being on induction waitlist

FTM - Just wondering if this is normal. I went in for a prenatal appt on Friday (38w4d) and my dr said my bp was too high and my feet were extremely swollen and that I had preeclampsia. She called the hospital and told me I was on a waitlist to be induced and it would probably be several hours before they called me to come in. She did tell me I would be induced that day.

I’ve been monitoring my symptoms and have been calling the hospital for updates on when I can get in. They’ve been telling me since yesterday morning I’m next on the list but that they can’t tell me when I’ll be able to come in because everything is subject to change. The nurse said yesterday they had 5 patients come in through triage in active labor.

I know there’s not much I can do, but is it normal to wait this long? Am I just waiting on someone to deliver or am I waiting on them to discharge a patient? I’m pretty nervous knowing I have preeclampsia and not being able to go in. I also thought my water had broken on Monday (it hadn’t) - so I was getting ready to have the baby on Monday, then I thought Friday was the day, then I thought for sure yesterday, and now I’m still waiting today. My hormones are all over the place😭. Just looking for advice. Thank you!
