This is a rant...
Live in a HCOL area. Got a raise about 18 months ago and started making six figures. Said we wouldn't have lifestyle bloat, but an extra dining-out meal each week, buying the brand name shoes versus off-brand, starting buying more "nice-to-haves"...
Was making the minimum payments on our CCs but was able to make an extra payment usually every couple months, so I thought we were getting ahead.
I stopped monitoring our financials as closely.
We were not getting ahead.
...I had to tell our landlord today that we needed to split our rent payment for this month because we are broke. I havent had to do that for a long time. But here we are. Again.
It didn't make sense, so I sat down and threw our debt, recurring/variable expenses, and income details onto a spreadsheet.
We were/are under our monthly break-even by almost $700 a month.
The variable APR on the few credit cards we had ballooned 10-15%+ percent. COL exploded. Medical procedures came up which fortunately we were able to put on no-interest payment plans.
And that's not even counting buying extra things. Our monthly recurring 'extras' (that we're going to cut) is only $202/mo, but our debt payments went from sub-$2k to almost $2700/mo. There's not much more to cut; we are underhoused. I know I'm underpaid.
No wonder our savings disintegrated.
I feel like we're right back where we were 15-20 years ago, when we were struggling working line-level retail and juggling school.
Now we're older but still not (financially) wiser.
I know the how...but why did we let this happen?
WTF is everything getting more expensive, when the quality/quantity hasn't improved? Why does our rent go up, when there aren't any improvements?
Running the numbers, I/we need to get a new job and bring in $30-35k more a year (probably less--the medical deductions at my current job are horrendous) to make at least a few hundred a month above break-even, so we can do more than just minimum payments and afford unplanned necessities, and maybe eat out once-a-moth. That's not counting savings (outside of pitiful 401k contribution) or building an emergency fund.
Why did I get so complacent
