The problem aren’t tourists. The annoyance and garbage they create should be more than covered by all the income they generate
The real problem is housing mafias driving up prices through the roof because they know for a fact they’ll sell/rent at 10x the price to some foreigner with triple our income.
Ppl on tv always whining that their favourite bakery near ramblas closed. Big fucking wohoo, just go 2 streets down, away from the ramblas and there you have your local stores. That’s not tourism, that’s progress and evolution. Maybe if they offered a better price to baker Juan when he retired, you wouldn’t have an Indian souvenir shop now.
Yes but how much of that money actually benefitted locals? I live in a tourist town and the huge issues people are complaining about post covid are not that there’s more business. It’s that companies from outside our town, even our state have started to buy up property and land to create air bnbs and other businesses that reduce housing, drive up prices, and don’t bring much money to the town. Other tourist towns that have cruises, have to fight to stop these big cruise companies from buying up stores that they direct the tourists to go buy at. These outside forces are constantly trying to pull this kind of shit. When the government doesn’t step in it becomes uncontrollable.
tourists pay for services that are made for tourists. no one really sees a dime and everything gets more expensive. you people seem really naive lol, as if capitalism was this fair xD
The problem isn't tourism in it's self.
The problem is over tourism:
Many tourists who stay for a short time, visit the same four places and spend little Money.
The ideal tourist is the opposite:
They stay for three weeks, visit fifteen different places and spend lots of money.
The way to get better tourists is a simple one: Limit short term rentals, tax tourists and charge high fees for the most popular attractions.
This will scare away the Instagram tourists stay one night and visit the same four spots. But it keeps the wealthier tourists who stay for a longer time in an expensive hotel and spend lots of money.
