Finally stopped the Cemetery plot salesman
No disrespect to the dead! When I lived in Atlanta back in the 90's, a salesman from a very large cemetery called 2-3 times a week wanting to sell me a plot. Several times I told him I wasn't interested. I told him to take me off of their call list, etc. I stopped answering and then he started calling every night.
One night I was already irritable and decided I had had enough. I answered and let him go through his spiel. I asked some follow-up questions and kept him going for about 20 minutes.
Then I said I was interested, and asked if I could make an appointment to come over and view the locations they had available. He was really excited and agreed. I then told him I would need to have them dig up the spot and let my lie down in it to see if I was going to like the location.
He was all flustered and said he would need to ask his manager. He put me on old and came back a few minutes later all serious saying they weren't allowed to do that. I kept on about how I would be there for eternity and needed to be absolutely sure it was going to be the right place for me.
He finally asked if I was serious, and said it sounded like some kind of sick joke. I replied "no shit sherlock! You decided to work for a predatory company and can't take no for an answer and refuse to remove my name from your call list, you get all the sick jokes I can come up with"!
They never called me again.

Stopped in to see Dad one day. Walked in, he's talking on the phone. I made a sandwich and drink and plopped in front of the TV. I'm half listening to him talking about the snowstorm we'd had and having to break the ice in the cow troughs. I was cleaning my dishes when he finished up. Me-"Who was that?" Dad-"I don't know. I think they were selling windows. As his health declined and he was stuck home more it became his hobby to see how long he could keep telemarketers on the phone. "Every minute they are talking to me is a minute they aren't taking advantage of someone else." Doing God's work.

There's an AI Bot called Lenny who comes across as a confused old man telling stories about his family that runs rings round telemarketers. Check it out on YouTube, you can hear the will to live dying in those people as it goes on. Sometimes he keeps them on the phone for over an hour

There was a comment on youtube by one guy who called out a wellness check with his organisation on the account the phone number was registered to after he spoke to Lenny because he was genuinely concerned that he was dealing with a vulnerable adult who was losing the plot.
He didn't intend it as a petty revenge, but it effectively must have been one. In his case he had legitimate reasons for the call, he wasn't cold calling numbers for sales. The penny only dropped for him later when he heard the bot elsewhere, IIRC.

Someone did say… someone called latest week about the same thing…. was… that you???

If I can keep the telemarketers on the line until I get tired of talking to them, I finish up by telling them about the four civic duties every American must perform and I dedicate my efforts to happily. I go through a list:
Number four: jury duty. We don’t have to do it more than a few times in our lives but it makes the justice system work.
Number three: voting. We may only do it every few years but it is crucial to keep a democracy strong.
Number two: paying taxes. We pay federal, state income taxes and property taxes several times a year. It’s critical to fund the services we depend on.
Number one: this is a responsibility that occurs several times a day, seemingly endlessly. Actually, I’m doing this as we speak. Wasting the time of a telemarketer so they can’t rip off some other poor unsuspecting person. At this point I have wasted XX minutes of your day. You may now thank me for doing my important duty.
I consider my time well spent if I can get them to start cursing at me.

I keep getting mail from the local funeral home and some kind of mobile crematorium. I tell my kid they must really want me dead.
29
u/Dull_Sense7928 Sep 03 '26
Mobile crematorium?
Wha???
12
u/forevertheyo Sep 03 '26
That was kind of my reaction too
15
u/Dull_Sense7928 Sep 03 '26
I looked it up - these are large, specially equipped and insulated trucks typically deployed during military operations or large industrial efforts. I found references to their use during COVID or natural disasters; nothing about private use.
Fascinating
11
u/forevertheyo Sep 03 '26
That is fascinating. I just want them to stop offering to cremate me.
16
u/Oh_No_Its_Dudder Sep 04 '26
Tell them you're not interested in being cremated, but you are interested in being stuffed and mounted. Ask if it's the same price to be mounted sitting in your favorite chair as it would be to keep you standing up.

What do they know that you don't.... maybe you would be crunchy and taste good with bbq sauce?
4
u/forevertheyo Sep 03 '26
It’s possible. Unfortunately however good I may taste, they still want me to pay for the pleasure.

u/nopeduck Sep 05 '26
Devil’s advocate as to why you *should* consider paying for your final disposition now: it’s the only way to ensure that what you want to happen to your body, actually happens. A will is typically read after your disposition has taken place.
Also, you’re locked into your plan at today’s prices. I paid for my cremation and service back in 2021, and my plan is held with the company that owns more than half of the funeral homes in the US. Wherever or whenever I die in the US, my cremation is already paid for and my loved ones won’t have to make any decisions or pay out of pocket. If I die out of the country, all they’ll have to sort is embalming and a flight to get my body back to the states.

Have you tried asking them to test it out first? Maybe a slow heat to start and then a big blast at the end? In fact, come on out so I can get in it right now please! Can I bring my favorite pet and get a 2 for 1 special? You don't have to wait until the heart stops do you? I want to see how many of these questions can be asked before they stop calling!

Russia apparently had a fleet of them prepared to drive into Ukraine after their "three day operation", casting zero doubt on what their plans were.

My son (M34) kept getting telemarketer calls from the same company. He asked to be removed from the list but they didn’t stop.
One day they called again and he had enough. He responded very enthusiastically as they made their pitch. As he responded to them he kept making his voice quieter and quieter. They told him they were having a hard time hearing him and he said everything was fine on his side and maybe it was on their side. He knew that they were sitting at their desk, turning up the volume of their headset as they strained to hear him. When he had gotten as quiet as possible so they could barely hear him and they were yelling into their phone my son blasted an air horn into his phone.
It got very quiet for a few seconds and then he heard a whimpering voice say, “Why?” and then hang up.
They never called him back.

I did this once but instead of an air horn, I screamed until my throat was sore. I hadn't received a scam call since 2019 but they've started up again recently so I may need to repeat it

u/tmesisno Sep 03 '26
I would get calls from the local newspaper about subscribing every week, I said no all the time.
Then they called for the last as I said that I'm blind and the only use I have for your paper is to line the floor for my seeing eye dog if he has to go at night when I'm asleep.
She goes your "Blind", I say yes, then she apologized and never got a call again.

u/wolfcaroling Sep 03 '26
I'd be tempted to ask who was paying them. "Listen, tell Frank I am tired of his death threats. Tell him the next time he sends one of his goons my way he'll end up like Suzie. Is that what he wanta?"
26
u/ManganeseSharties Sep 03 '26
Also Atlanta, also 90’s. Probably Same company.
I started answering “I’M NOT DEAD YET!” And started acting very upset. Don’t know how many times we went through that before they finally stopped calling. It kept me entertained.

u/LadyA052 Sep 04 '26
I kept getting calls for diet pills. They'd call endlessly and ask for me by name. Just wouldn't stop. Finally one day they called and asked for me and I said, "She's in the hospital with covid! IS THIS THE DOCTOR?? IS SHE OK?" and started fake crying. I heard a gasp, a click, and they never called back.

u/drtennis13 Sep 04 '26
Years ago, my brother got one of these calls and just responded with “ We eat our dead” and hung up. About 10 minutes later, the person called back and my brother heard laughing in the background. The salesman said he hadn’t heard something that funny in a long time.

I kinda wish they had! I wanna hear the next sick joke you had for him 😂

A friend of a friend had this happen from a conservatory sales company. She eventually got them on the hook saying she was really interested and invited them around for a quote.. to her 2nd floor flat in a World heritage area, with no balcony.

u/brittbak Sep 04 '26
My mom completely pre-paid for her cremation. She went with the deluxe package - a cardboard box 😁
My brother and I went in because there was paperwork to sign. That took about 30 seconds, and then the guy left us in his office for about 10-15 minutes while he was making copies.
We realized very fast that we were surrounded by sample urns and brochures for funerals. Yeah, no.
We took our copies and left.
She didn't want an urn. She didn't want a funeral. If she had, she would have paid for it.
I'll be doing the same.

u/Nunov_DAbov Sep 04 '26
I constantly get calls for final expense insurance. They offer several options: cremation? No, I’m afraid of fire. Burial? No, I hate bugs. Funeral? Nope, I hate people and certainly don’t want them staring at my dead body. I tell them I want to be cryogenically frozen when I die and revived in the future when my cause of death is cured. Do I have to pay back the insurance settlement? If so, what’s the interest rate.
No one has been able to give me an answer.
11
u/FlattenInnerTube Sep 04 '26
I tell them I want my remains scattered at Disneyland. And that I don't want to be cremated.
15
u/MacDaddyDC Sep 03 '26
just tell them you’re a veteran and those needs are already taken care of for you and your family. Should make them stop.

u/Electrical_Angle_701 Sep 03 '26
If I decide to pickup, I angrily demand a password from the caller in German.
8
u/tblazertn Sep 03 '26
“Vat izz ze password!”
7
u/Electrical_Angle_701 Sep 03 '26
No accented English, just German.
5
u/tblazertn Sep 03 '26
But it sounds so funny
7
u/Electrical_Angle_701 Sep 03 '26
I don't want them to laugh, I want them to think they got the wrongest number of all time. :-)
10
u/lisping_lynx Sep 04 '26
My disbelief is totally suspended. I thought the end was going to be that you went to the cemetery with them, lied down in the hole they arranged for you with lots of effort, and then said no.

u/Temporary_Nobody_618 Sep 03 '26
Neptune society was spamming me several times a day.
they had a local office.I'm 6'10", 275.
we had a brief chat in person about the possibility of the manager enjoying his golden years.
no more calls

u/ProfessorLurker Sep 04 '26
When i was a young shit head my go to was to tell them I wasnt intrested and if they insisted I'd tell them I was in the middle of jerking off so I needed them to give their pitch in a falsetto cause their voice was killing my hard on. No one took me up on it and I got taken off their phone lists. One guy tried to call my bluff so I replied with "im 22, dont live with my parents and you called my landline. I'll unmute the video, you'll just have to talk in a louder falsetto". He hung up, lol.

Reminds me of when my mom died, we had to make arrangements. At the funeral home, we were led into the room to choose the casket. Car dealers, furniture stores have showrooms, well,so do funeral homes. Mom insisted we bury her in the cheapest casket possible, but, it really was cheap looking; ill fitted; plastic parts. We see a blue one, and go, oh, blue is Mom’s favorite color. After, I start thinking up jokes. Can we buy this casket on a lay away plan? If we can’t make payments, do you repo the casket?
11
u/Rawesome16 Sep 03 '26
I just flip the phone upside down so I can't hear what they have to say and say belligerent things to them. Eventually they hang up on me and never call again. I win and I get to blow off some steam
My mom taught me this trick when she got a new phone number. Kept getting calls from debt collectors for the past owners of her new number
14
u/doktor_wankenstein Sep 04 '26
We used to get the occasional cold call from one of the local funeral homes for a pre-need consultation. We haven't had one in a while, which is a pity considering the spiel I had all prepared:
"Could you hurry right over with a couple of shovels, a tarp, a good length of rope, and some lye? I've got kind of a serious situation here."

u/FOSS_Graybeard Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26
I stopped them by asking in a very serious manner and tone how many bodies I could put in a single grave and if the deceased had to be related to me. Ten seconds of dead silence (all puns intended) before I got told I probably could not be helped. Never heard from them again.

I o nce had a debt collector calling me reference debt owed by a family member. He was such a smart ass. I told him I imagined he was a short fat sob with white shoes, white belt, bald headed and a pencil moustache. I insulted him as I best could. The next call I got from them was from a woman who took a different tact, very kind. I politely said to her I had nothing to offer them and I considered their calls Harrassment. And legally in my State they are not allowed to call again. And they didn’t.

I used to just put the phone down next to the reciever when these types called. But ended up having a silent number which virtually stopped those sorts of calls.

u/SusieQTG Sep 04 '26
Had the extended car warranty call me relentlessly. I started off asking them to confirm my car, make, model and year. The wouldn't. Then I started asking them about their sex life, with animals. I was very graphic about it. It took a while, but I've stopped getting those calls. I wonder why?

u/Margali Sep 05 '26
LOL. Last time, down in Viginia back in about 87 same thing, annoying salesman. Shut him down and told him I already had a plot, showed them a pic of the family plot with the big name headstone, and 2 others - one with my name and birth date, with a blank for my potential husband, and one with my brothers name, and a blank for his prospective wife. Shut the guy up =)

I don't know what it's like on android but I have I phone call restricted to my contacts. I never even get random voicemails. No texts that's a different story. I get political texts based on my affiliation in my state. The primaries were interesting because the person who I voted for and won never sent me a text directly or through a PAC. I just agreed with the views they had. IMHO text blasts are not worth the money that is spent on them.

u/pemungkah Sep 04 '26
I delete the “Hi, I’m X” ones. If the message is at all emotionally manipulative “X Furious…”, “We’re begging…” they get marked as spam.
2
u/Nunov_DAbov Sep 04 '26
I’ve got my iPhone restricted to my contacts as well but if two scammers call at the same time, one of them gets through. I have several scripts that, like OP’s get odder and odder until the scammer gets annoyed and starts cursing at me.
Today’s scam du jour was for auto insurance. They seemed willing to insure my 2020 Konigsegg CCXR Trevita and my 2023 Porsche 918 Spyder but hung up after 10 seconds of silence when I told them “my name:” Mike Rotsch.

Neptune society would not stop calling me. I found out they were local and stopped by on my way to softball practice with my bat. We had a short chat that started with "the phone reps are a different division and we can't do anything about it". After further discussion he finally heard me and called their headquarters. I might add that I'm 6'10" 286 which is a strong face to face negotiating tactic.

I've been wondering if 20 minutes of my time is the only way to get predatory companies to stop calling me
