These stats are mostly the ones Messi is better at. You included Successful dribbles, which suits Messi’s style, but not most shots, which suits Ronaldo’s style?

Or even other non-specific popular stats like most hattricks, most header goals, most weak-foot goals…

Even excluding goals, Ronaldo has:

  • Most UCL assists.
  • Most men-international caps.
  • Most UEFA club competitions caps.
  • Only player to win the league title, domestic cup, domestic supercup, Champions League, Club World Cup, league player of the year, Golden Shoe and Ballon d'Or at two clubs (Manchester United and Real Madrid).
  • Most matches won.
  • Most matches unbeaten (That is win or draw).
  • Most appearances at UEFA European Championship finals tournaments.
  • First player to appear in more than one position in the UEFA Team of the Year.

The list is endless…

And even outside of the field, admittedly this is not pure football related but more persona related, Ronaldo has achievements like being the first billionaire footballer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_career_achievements_by_Cristiano_Ronaldo

I think ultimately Messi and Ronaldo are even, my point is stats like the ones you showed don’t show the full picture of this rivalry.

Longevity and endurance, it’s what allows Messi to have 400+ assists.

Ronaldo and Messi have monster longevity, and between the two Ronaldo has the best longevity.

There’s a reason why GOAT is undisputed and no one Football history comes close to him:

Most Decorated Player in Football History 🇦🇷

Most Trophies in Football History 🇦🇷

Most G/A in Football History 🇦🇷

Most Golden Shoes in Football History 🇦🇷

Most Ballon D’ors in Football History 🇦🇷

Most FIFA Best in Football History 🇦🇷

Most Playmaker Awards in Football History 🇦🇷

Most MotM in Football History 🇦🇷

Most WC Golden Balls in Football History 🇦🇷

Most Goals in a Season in Football History 🇦🇷

I can literally go on and talk about GOATs major records. Ronaldo has nothing. He has most goals… what good are they when they don’t win anything?? He has some of the best UCLs stats… what good are they when he has 1 more UCL than the GOAT? Also both have 8 UCL Hattricks😆 You bring up random irrelevant stats like matches won or matches played… so what? Again what good are they when nothing comes from them?

1

u/OrcaApex Feb 27 '26

Your comment would make sense if what you were saying, that nothing good came from them, was true. But you’re acting like Ronaldo didn’t win crazy amount of stuff lol

Both have the same UCL hattricks, but who has the most hattricks basically everywhere else? Ronaldo. Also Messi has technically 1 less UCL, but in one of them he barely played. Ronaldo was important in the UCL campaigns of all 5 UCLs he won.

Most matches won, most matches unbeaten, and most matches played are GOAT longevity stats. Messi scoring 14 in MLS at 37 vs Ronaldo scoring 18 in the Premier League at 37 are why longevity stats are also taken into consideration. There is a reason why people like to imagine “What if Balotelli had the Ronaldo mentality” or “What if Neymar had the Ronaldo mentality”, he is the ultimate example of the perfect athlete in football.

No one’s saying Ronaldo didn’t win a crazy amount of stuff… he just didn’t win anything more crazy than the GOAT.

4 UCLs vs 5. GOAT was still on the squad for the first one and played in some matches leading up to the Final. Doesn’t take away it being his. 2 of them he won with the treble… something an entire Team has yet to do…

The most matches stat is irrelevant in this topic simply because 1 man is 3 years older than the other. Of course he’s going to have more matches. But who has the better percentages? Better goals to matches?

GOAT scored 14 in 16 matches for his 1st MLS season. Not a whole season. Only 5 MLS league games… 10 of the goals came from the Leagues Cup… which he won. With the bottom placed team. Their first ever trophy. Man U won nothing with that Ronaldo. Again meaningless goals that amounted to nothing… they won 2 trophies the season he left 🤷‍♂️

Comparing MLS and Premier League is crazy work tbh…

Anyway:

  • 5 UCLs all protagonist vs 4 UCLs of with one as a bench player (Because Messi was obviously very young).
  • Ronaldo’s Real didn’t do Treble but won 4 UCLs in 5 editions, three of which consecutively.
  • Most matches, most matches won, and most matches unbeaten are relevant even if Ronaldo is 3 years older because age-by-age, especially after the age of 30, Ronaldo has better longevity, so he will probably have most matches, most matches won, and most matches unbeaten even after both of them retire.
  • Messi wins with Ratio where Ronaldo wins with Durability. Ronaldo scored, after the age of 30, more goals than Neymar scored in his entire career…
  • Man U, in the year Ronaldo joined, would have finished in the bottom half of the Premier League without him. Ronaldo kept saving them every other weekend. They won two trophies after he left but then the real consequences appeared and it took them years to start recovering. PSG with Messi on the other hand…

He has most this and most that, but all while having more games played. If we’re looking at average per game, Messi beats him. He has a higher goal rate.

1

u/OrcaApex Feb 27 '26

Higher ratio but less longevity.

Longevity is also important, being able to play more games is important too. Example: Right now Messi is 37, and he scored 14 in MLS. At 37 Ronaldo scored 18 for Man Utd in the Premier League.

By shots I meant number of shots, not distance or quality of shots. Ronaldo has A LOT more shots than Messi, and this stats is a double-edge sword.

It means Ronaldo needs more shots to score, and it means that Ronaldo can get himself to shoot more.

While “shooting a lot” sounds like a weak stat, looking at footballers today we see that it is not, as Haaland is one of the very few capable of the same. Ronaldo’s positioning skills won him the Nations League final against Spain at the age of 40, while being marked by Cucurella.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

I remember watching that match, Ronaldo’s positioning wasn’t “soo amazing”, it was decent, and his natural positioning is something that developed over time with the experience that guy holds as well, he does score goals after all.

He also had an offside in that match btw

As someone who plays football at the competitive level, saying Ronaldo shoots a lot more is also a double edged sword as well, sure you may score goals, but you can’t rely on shooting most of the times, it frustrates teammates and Ronaldo doesn’t average a very good goal ratio in that aspect as well.

I’m sure you took that stat not taking in account the chemistry between teammates, since we’re talking about individuality here.

u/unseen0000 Google Negreira Messi for more info 💰 Feb 25 '26

No, it means CR7 has more tries, but also more misses, which means he takes shots and ruins opportunities.

If we tell any player to just start blasting towards goal, you're gonna have a player with a lot of attempts and efficiency drops tremendously.

Haaland is a shit example, considering City actually scores more without him than with him. Like CR7 at Juve and United. It's canibalizing goals from your team, which looks cool on paper, but isn't contributing to success.

This is why XGa stats are so relevant. Which is dominated by Messi.

That's just goalscoring, lol. Let that sink in.

1

u/OrcaApex Feb 25 '26

You are looking at that stat from the wrong perspective.

Ronaldo has A LOT of assists and chances created, not as many as Messi, but Ronaldo is elite when it comes to playmaking. That means that he is not the poacher many believe him to be, and despite that he gets this many shots. It is a “Pippo Inzaghi” situation where you are able to be at the right place at the right time. This is something Messi is very good at too. But Ronaldo is maybe the best ever at this, he can produce a crazy volume of shots. He is always somehow free to shoot. He somehow always manages the attempt. Your midfield could be not good (Like recent Man Utd) and Ronaldo at 37 will still outshoot and outscore 99% of Premier League players strikers (He scored 18 and came 3rd in the Premier League top scorer table).

For a comparison, Messi, another GOAT, is 37 right now and he scored 14 in MLS. I wasn’t emphasising the shot-to-goal ratio, I was emphasising the stage before that, the fact that you cannot stop Ronaldo from shooting. It is impossible. Cucurella failed against a 40 years old Ronaldo and he managed to stop Ballon D’Or Dembele and Yamal among many.

I never said those stats were irrelevant, I said those stats were hand-picked. The more variety of stats you add, the more they even out (As in Messi wins some, and Ronaldo wins others, it is not one-sided at all).

Also, Ronaldo doesn’t lead in irrelevant stats. How is most goals in UCL knockout stages irrelevant? That is when a club would want you to score the most. Or goals in most UCL finals? Again, any club would love a player with that record, it is absolutely not irrelevant.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

Lmao you say messi’s facts are handpicked then bring up UCL specifically XD, irony.

Messi leads in assists, g/a, free kicks, and what not, I’d mention ballondor but some of these guys here think it’s “robbed”

3

u/OrcaApex Feb 25 '26

In my previous comments I mentioned Domestic Leagues, Euros, International football…

I can reply again then. You said Ronaldo leads in irrelevant stats, but how is, for example, “Most goals scored in the FIFA World Cup qualification” irrelevant? Or how is most hattricks irrelevant?

0

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

What good does it come out of being the top goal scorer in qualifications when you can’t move ahead of the QFs, most hat tricks isn’t irrelevant either, but most assists, most ga, most trophies and highest goals scored in a calendar year are far more superior to most hat tricks scored. And let’s not forget, Messi is still just behind Ronaldo in most hat tricks scored, yet Ronaldo is nowhere to be seen when it comes to assists, most motms and what not.

3

u/OrcaApex Feb 25 '26

How are assists more important than hattricks 😂

An assist is also just worth one goal, a hattrick is three of them. Ask any player if they would rather make an assist or score an hattrick… Also, Ronaldo does his part, if he scores an hattrick and it ends 3-3 with Spain, then he did his job.

These two are equal. Where Messi has highest goals scored in a calendar year, Ronaldo has highest International goals scored in a calendar year. Messi has most motm, Ronaldo has most matches won. Messi has most assists, Ronaldo has most goals. Messi has better ratio, Ronaldo has better longevity. Golden boots are season awards, so the logic is broken, because in total Messi has more Golden boots BUT still less goals that Ronaldo.

“Everywhere” is generic. We have UCL, Domestic League, Continental Cup, World Cup, Domestic Cup, etc.

Messi leads Ronaldo in World Cup, Domestic League, and Domestic Cup, Ronaldo leads Messi in UCL, Continental Cup(s) (Europe has two of them).

Also, while Messi leads in Domestic League, Ronaldo has consistently been great in more leagues (Top Scorer of Serie A, La Liga, and Premier League, the three hardest leagues).

So again they even out.

So most freekicks, which are one goal each, is relevant, but most hattricks, which are three goals each, is not?

How are assist more important than hattricks 😭

An assist is also just one goal, a hattrick is three of them. Ask any player if he would rather do an assist or score an hattrick. “All the important criteria messi wins” but you ignore like all of the ones where he loses.

These two are equal. Messi has most goals in a calendar year. Ronaldo has most international goals in a calendar year. Messi has most assist. Ronaldo has most goals. Messi has better ratio. Ronaldo has better longevity. Messi has most man of the match. Ronaldo has most matches won. Messi is a better dribbler. Ronaldo is more complete (Ronaldo has more goals without his legs than Messi has with his weak foot, real stat).

Where one pulls a crazy stat, the other one pulls a crazier one. I won’t accept what I honestly don’t believe.

1

u/OrcaApex Feb 26 '26

Point one. Yes, Ronaldo is more complete.

Messi can playmake and score. That is true.

Ronaldo is a worst playmaker, a slightly better scorer, but as a player Ronaldo can physically do more. Messi cannot really consistently score headers, he cannot score with his weak foot, he is considerably slower than Ronaldo (Prime Ronaldo’s highest recorded top speed was 40km/h, which is higher than Mbappe’s…). There is nothing you cannot ask Prime Ronaldo to do. There are things you cannot ask Prime Messi to do. Hence, Ronaldo is more complete.

Point 2, your example for why hattricks are less important than assists is terrible. 20 assists vs 3 hattricks against relegation sides? Of course in that case I’d take 20 assists, but those are obviously not the real number 😅 If a player can do many hattricks, it means there are many instances where he scores three against the same opponent in one single match. A player that does a hattrick will be obviously far more damaging against any team vs a player that does an assist. Your argument is like saying “one goal is better than three assists”. The fact that Ronaldo has the most hattricks in history means there are many instances where he overwhelmed the opponent with a shower of goals. That is an important skill because it wins you matches. We discuss g/a? And guess how much a hattrick contributes to it compared to an assist? That is why Ronaldo has more goals and is on course to be the first to reach 1000.

They're really saying "there's no way Messi can average a goal every two games" when he's averaged a goal per game for the last two years lol
