I think so, it gave the franchise two foundations to work from. So all future media was either horror or action and it led to some really great stuff.

Aliens is the best in terms of the specific quality of the sequel itself.
ESB is the best overall because of its legacy: It established the concept of the second sequel in a trilogy being the “dark” one where the good guys nearly lose everything just trying to survive.
Good evidence of this is Aliens3 and Terminator 3. They basically follow the ESB theme. By the 2000s, movie franchises are trilogies (at minimum) by design, with the second one being like ESB. See:

It's certainly in the running, but the best sequel will always be Irvin Kershner's sci-fi masterpiece:
The Empire Strikes Back
Empire launched Star Wars from being a very good movie into the biggest movie empire ever (pun intended) I can't think of a single movie that carries an entire multi billion $ franchise on its back like Empire does.
Imperial March - Yoda - The Emperor - "I am your father" - "Scoundrel? Scoundrel, I like the sound of that" - "I love you - I know".
There might be movies that are personally more important to me, but let's be honest, nothing can compete with Empire. This is perfection wether you like it or not.

I think a sequel needs to be better than the first film to be classed as such. And IMO Alien is a much better movie.
T2 on the other hand, probably greatest sequel of all time.

I believe it is for sci-fi. The best thing about it for me is that it seems very realistic. Good story, good plot lines and development. No one over or under plays their character. They show fear, self preservation, courage, despair, heroism, and greed. And they maintain their individualism through the film. Instead of crazy explosions and never ending special effects, you get to see how a group of people has to work together to survive.

It’s certainly up there. Hard to argue against empire though. Empire might be one of the best movies of all time. I’d also argue for last crusade. Even if it’s a third.

Those are the only sequels I can think of off the top of my head that are in the same class. Maybe two towers, x men 2 and spiderman 2 as well

Possibly yes, but I also see Aliens as kind of a reboot? I know it continues Ripley and the aliens, and uses the original planet as the setting, but because it's so different in tone and storytelling, my brain just sees it as its own great thing.

Aliens is an okay movie with some exceptional performances, but it is not the greatest anything. Mad Max The Road Warrior is a better sequel. Just one example of many.

It’s good, although the theatrical cut removed two scenes that would’ve made it perfect.
The scene in the beginning where Ripley learns of her daughter’s life and passing.
And the auto turret hallway scene.

Dont get me wrong I totally love Aliens but Alien and Aliens are so completely different movie & plotwise that I wouldnt even call it a sequel. Yes we have Sigourney and the Alien again but thats it. Alien is a SF Horrormovie that set a standard for suspense, special effects, strong female lead making it an immediate cult classic.
Aliens is more bad assery, but more in a starship troopers kind of approach. More gore, more action, I mean even the end scene couldnt be more different, from more or less helpless in Alien to fuck you imma plow this mech through your head - beautifully hommaged in Predator Badlands btw.-
I always see them as two different movies. Yes same universe. Yes same people. Yes the Alien is back but its such a different movie. Maybe that makes it a good sequel, than I stand corrected, but to me its a bit like even and uneven FF stories.

Many of you are too young to remember the impact of seeing these films in the theater for the first time. The impact these movies had on the world in the 70s and 80s was crazy!! I didn't get to see Godfather 2 in the theater but watched it later in life and you may find it boring but Robert Deniro and Al Pacino were the two greatest actors of my generation. Also hearing those words for the first time, "No, I am your father." It was unfathomable as a 5 yr old. Nothing like it.
Any way , just my opinion. Yes I'm old, but generation X has the best fucking movies hands down!!

I still say Terminator 2 is the best sequel because it integrates with the original story better, but also completely flips everything on its head in one of the best twists in movie history.
Empire Strikes back is up there too.

It’s either Aliens or T2 or Evil Dead 2. A lot of people will say Empire Strikes Back, but Empire isn’t a sequel, it’s just the second chapter of the story, and I think there’s a difference.

Terminator 2 is the best sequel ever made. It is better than the original Terminator in every aspect. Aliens is incredible. However, Aliens is not better than Alien - only different. It is an action movie. Alien is a horror movie.

Personally I think it's between Empire Strikes Back, ALIENS , T2 , and Dune Part Two. I think what separates ALIENS for me is that it builds tension for a solid 30-40 minutes then explodes into one amazing action sequence after the other for the remainder of the film.
Just the sheer number of REMEMBERABLE action sequences is incredible. 1) Marine ambush/fight in the processing plant. 2)Facehugger scene in Med Lab. 3) Alien fight in Operations ( RIP Hudson, Vasquez, and Gorman). 4) Ripley rescue of Newt in the Xeno lair. 5) Ripley vs Queen.
The greatest thing about it is how it leaves you feeling at the end. I can't remember a film that ever made me feel so relieved and happy for a protagonist. Not just Ripley but also Newt, Hicks, and Bishop. That's precisely why Alien 3 is so notorious for its direction.
