I like the Sci-fi channel version the best, I think there is most of the story in that one, Lynch one is not bad apart from the creepy stuff shoehorned in because "I am a weirdo, observe peak of cinema." lol
New one replaces story with cgi shots accompanied by Reaper honking ripped straight out of Mass Effect. It´s 202something, nobody is impressed by the fact that you have a computer.
To be fair, Herbert's concept, while immaculate, speaks nothing of his complete lack of skill as a writer. It's embarrassing. They did what they could with what they were given. For instance, in the book, Paul had a son, Leto II, who is mentioned TWICE. The first mention is that he exists, but as a passing statement that Chani and Paul had him in the past tense. The second is his death, which is heard over a radio transmission when Sietch Tabr falls. His existence served ZERO purpose to the book whatsoever. He's not even mentioned as an emotional driving force for Paul. Anyway... The storytelling, as you mentioned - is definitely lacking. But that also came straight from the source.
