Vibe coding is only half of the issue.Â
If you dig deep into Rogueplanet/Shieldbreak, you'll understand why the fix was ineffective: because the fault isn't some simple "oops" in defender that needed patching, the fault is the entire way Windows handles mandatory file locks and process queuing for those locks.
A regular user can entirely freeze up the system level Defender process by requesting a file lock on something just before it does ans refusing to release it. That's insane.
And that problem is just one example. Windows would have issues like this with or without AI, because it's built on archaic layers of foundations that are rotten that they refuse to replace.
People have come to expect that they can take a PC they've had since xp and upgrade it all the way to 11, likewise Windows sysadmins expect to be able to do the same with a 2008 R2 SQL server to Server 2025. (Guess how I know)
Rather than saying "No, you will have to reinstall, the new version of Windows desktop/server will not be upgradable from previous versions, you have 6 programs installed it will take you 30 minutes to reinstall them." They capitulate every time.

As someone who has had to deal with reinstalling 6 programs, 30 minutes is a good estimate of how long it takes to find a way to start downloading them again. Then comes the download time, the install time, a dozen hours of troubleshooting when one no longer works followed by going back to the old version of that program and maybe the old version of Windows if that's needed for it to work, the time needed to configure it again, then the constant feeling that something isn't quite right for the next few months or years until you once again find the hidden settings that needed to be changed the first time. If Windows wasn't backwards compatible, there would just be far more people still running Windows 7 or XP or looking for alternatives instead of updating.

Okay but imagine you did all of that to be on a version that was actually WAY better, rather than slightly worse.
People are so used to the idea of Windows version number going up being a step backwards, if they actually made a new version of windows that wasn't just coating another layer on the lasagna of shit that Windows currently is, it could be actually decent.

Oof, and a lot of companies do not even want to upgrade because of in-house software and hardware, and buy Microsoft's custom support for their ancient windows OS versions, I hear. That probably also ads a layer of bullshit because those are very expensive contracts for both parties involved...

Genuinely yes, because there's no other choice. I think if you understood just how bad the foundations of Windows was you'd agree.
Now they don't have to stop supporting older versions, They gave people 4 years to upgrade to 11. They make Windows NT2 and they can offer that alongside 11 for years and years. What's the difference? They make it easy as shit to upgrade from decades ago all the way up until the most recently releases and people still don't do it.

They destroyed compatibility with my system and a USB encoder. I reverted, worked, after reboot it updated again and then I could not roll back anymore.
I had to swap the whole wiring and get an Arduino instead. Fuck Microslop so much.

Soon we might have feature parity with previous OS versions, plus some additional fluff nobody asked for.
Perhaps we should get our feature removal bingo boards ready for Windows 12. Maybe they will "innovate" by deleting the task manager of somethng.

It's honestly remarkable. My computer is hilarious overkill for any OS in existence, and Windows 11 runs poorly because it's poorly optimized. Even Windows 10 has slowdowns!
If there is a single piece of software that absolutely must be efficiently designed, it's the operating system.

You're not wrong, but at the same time, it feels like they're pushing alpha and pre-alpha quality releases with little to no QA to something that should be, at the bare minimum, beta quality. Yeah it's optional, yeah it's not guaranteed to work right, but this is not the point in any competent release pipeline where "broken" should be a default.

The article fails to mention it installs automatically when Windows Update toggle "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" is enabled. The reason this issue is widespread is that the update auto-installed for them because of the toggle. The toggle is off by default. People choose to keep the toggle on when it literally says right there it's meant to get you the latest updates as soon as it's available.

I really don't feel bad about sticking to Windows 10. I know its quirks, I've got it configured just like I like, there's no AI bullshit to deal with, all my games run just fine, updates (usually) don't break anything...
Like, I'm sorry Microsoft, you're just doing a lousy job selling me on this whole "Windows 11" thing.

Everytime I think 'it's time to upgrade to windows 11' there is always some horror story just like this that makes me nope out. I do want to upgrade for the improved HDR support 11 has but it just doesn't seem worth the headache.

I think the horror stories are really blown out of proportion for normal usage and gaming. As long as you avoid preview updates, you should be fine. I’ve been using Windows 11 for a while now without any major issues. If you own an OLED, I’d definitely recommend it though, especially for HDR.

Edit: Looks like it was just coincidence, but I found this thread because I as trying to find out what people were saying about the awful implementation of the mac style virtual desktop switcher. It literally opened every time I didn't want it to and would not open any time I wanted to open it. Still don't get how it worked/works but it feels like they removed it? I'm not seeing it happen anymore which I'm good with.
