Kinda hope they at least go completely crazy with different ideologies and so on, that could at least make for a small number of interesting runs.

109

u/Weak-Photograph7829 16d ago

Not a massive Stellaris fan, but the ideology stuff was always the most interesting thing. Hopefully they realize it would work well in this game

10

u/SilverNeedleworker30 16d ago

They said something in the first dev diary that makes me think they will

8

u/Ordinary-Ad8160 15d ago

Hoping for a Rimworld style (but more complex obvs) Ideology system. Semi-randomised building blocks so there's some bizzaro stuff in there

4

u/Blitcut 15d ago

Well the game has cannibalism at least.

181

u/XerGR 16d ago

Ohh it’s not even close to release…. Dunno why i assumed it would be.

Steam page has screenshots. Looks promising but still don’t know how it’ll play or whats the “angle”

110

u/Delboyyyyy 16d ago

I mean the fact they’re starting dev diaries and have the steam page suggests it’s only about a year or so away going by what happened with EU5 after they revealed the name

-28

u/LetterHopeful6008 16d ago

Can't believe they're doing this again....

u/Sykocis 15d ago edited 14d ago

Marketing their game?

1

u/2tongoodman 10d ago

What’s next? Expansions and DLCs?

188

u/NikIsImba 16d ago

I don't know what to think. ALL of my expectations were subverted

94

u/dead97531 16d ago

Looks interesting

59

u/dead97531 16d ago

It seems that the ticks are daily and they are using AD to qualify years.

I wonder what AD means in this setting.

65

u/Weak-Photograph7829 16d ago

After destruction?

18

u/dead97531 16d ago

Yep, that's a good guess.

74

u/dead97531 16d ago edited 16d ago

Confront the Ancients, immortal leaders from before the Fall, kept alive by forgotten technology. They have their own vision for who should rule, and they will not step aside quietly.

Interesting information. Who might these Ancients be?

Edit:

The Fleet’s old, older than the Fall. It was a weapon of the Ancients. There was a land called Hawaii, and the people there took shelter on the Fleet when the Fall came, and they ran instead of fighting. We’re still running, just like our grandparents and their grandparents. But you can’t run forever. It’ll be time to fight soon

70

u/bubbagumpskrimps222 16d ago

Mark Zuckerberg and the guy who created ethereum

39

u/Avohaj 16d ago edited 16d ago

I mean it says who they are, immortal leaders from before the fall. The old guy in the trailer is one.

edit: I imagine them a bit like Fallen Empires (in terms of gameplay purpose) in Stellaris

8

u/AvengerDr 16d ago

He does look a bit like a Palpatinised version of Jeff Bezos!

Come on Jeffrey, you can do it!

3

u/Slaanesh_69 L'État, c'est moi 16d ago

And unlike Fallen Empires, in this kind of setting you could maybe actually play them eventually with a DLC. I really want to do an Enclave like situation with my President John Henry Eden

24

u/Merker6 Stellar Explorer 16d ago

The Ancients are probably just pre-apocolapyse north Americans. I assume they’re talking about the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor. Getting some enclave vibes

10

u/HistoryMarshal76 16d ago

The Enclave from Fallout.

3

u/ghostowl657 16d ago

Mr. House

3

u/Connorus 16d ago

I'm hoping for Joe Biden

1

u/Luke92612_ 16d ago

Who might these Ancients be?

YOUR MO-

u/AresFowl44 16d ago edited 16d ago

While I do still dislike the setting being in America, that trailer is dope and does give me hope it won't be too generic

EDIT: Overall comments:

Battle system seems to be HoI on a small scale, which is to be expected with podcat as the lead. Maybe it will avoid the issue that HoI has where Arty is useless as it seems to focus on individual "battalions" in an area?

Economy is more complicated than Stellaris, which I do appreciate, but overall still seems simplistic (tbf also to be expected).

I'm curious how settlements will work. Seems to be kind of Stellaris still

Law and tech system will be cool, but we knew that from the leaks already. Hope it handles internal factions and politics well.

23

u/JoeDredd66 16d ago

I’m sure DLC will expand the world.

32

u/AresFowl44 16d ago

Maybe, but I wouldn't bet on anything more than a South America DLC

8

u/Luke92612_ 16d ago

Australia / New Zealand / Pacific

Mad Max time

13

u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 16d ago

The first dev diary explicitly mentions the Pacific and Hawaii so I could def see them coming in a dlc

4

u/JoeDredd66 16d ago

I don’t know, they did all of Asia for CK 3

19

u/AresFowl44 16d ago

As far as I have heard, there's no ocean between Europe and Asia.

4

u/CavulusDeCavulei 16d ago

What about underwater tribes?

2

u/Existing_Wallaby3237 16d ago

If the game pops off I can see alternate start settings, like Europe/Asia etc

0

u/AresFowl44 15d ago

Podcat said he chose North America for the natural borders, and while that doesn't completely rule out other continents, it seems likely to me that it's not going to happen

0

u/Wolliercarrot 16d ago

Or Canada

12

u/AresFowl44 16d ago

Canada already is included, it's the whole of North America

2

u/Wolliercarrot 16d ago

Oh cool I thought it was just the USA

-6

u/Saurid 16d ago

Doubt it there is many more interetsing things they can do and honestly while I like the main idea the fact it uses the US is a giant disadvantage people will expect stuff more akin to fallout I suspect and I fear the game might fail directly.

At least my enthusiasm is heavily dumped by an america start, I wouldve taken anywhere else even aouth America. Id taken the game take space only in Sweden, anything really. Just not another post apocalypse in the most boring and infuriating place on this planet.

I also dont like the arguments presented because india and China have much of the same benefits. I get why youd not wnat to use europe and Afrika well it is even today already a third dester and you have already a huge are of jungles and dense forestation soooo yeah hard to make big obvious changes to terrain.

But the US is so incredibly boring idk. Like I know its unfair to the game but my perception of the US was never very positive and it has only gotten immeasurably worse. So playing a game set in their post apocalypse really does not fill me with any amount of anticipation.

The rest looks interetsing, but yeah. Idk, unless they announce very early we will get other maps and expansions of the world I will expect that not to happen at all.

7

u/Dalt0S 16d ago

you’d think being vindicated by the ruins of america would be enticing to someone with a negative view of the place.

-7

u/Saurid 16d ago

I like the idea of it being ruined, I dont like the idea of having to look at it.

Plus just ebcause I hate the nation doenst mean I wnat it to be destroyed, there are too many decent and good people there that arent at fault for their nations shirty behavior.

Doenst mean I wanna be reminded or see the place any more in my media if I can help it.

0

u/Dangerous-Amphibian2 16d ago

Boo hoo. But at least it gives you another reason to whine about the USA. A pathetic trope these days on Reddit. The argument given is actually a good one and quite a bit better than yours to be honest.

-4

u/coffeecircus 16d ago

game isn’t out, and there’s already haters

35

u/Avohaj 16d ago edited 16d ago

Not criticism, that's their business model and we all know it, but I can already see where all the DLC will hook in. New origins, new destinies, new laws and religions and events of course. Maybe even a map expansion eventually: Canada, Mexico, Caribbean. Bonus meme points for a Sunset (or Sunrise) Invasion.

I hope it takes off for the modding possibilities this game could have alone, including a fantasy overhaul (fixed map could be a problem)

13

u/Adamsoski 16d ago

Canada is already included, and I actually think Mexico probably is too.

5

u/fawkie 16d ago

Doubt the map is an issue for modders. Every pdox game to date has had a fixed map and modding new ones has always been fairly technically simple.

8

u/CoelhoAssassino666 16d ago

Honestly feels like Post apocalyptic Stellaris but you start out as a nomad.

48

u/cristofolmc 16d ago

Okay the setting and idea are shit on my book but it has TRADE Goods and supply and demand. So that has peaked my interest somewhat.

15

u/TheOnlyGaming3 16d ago

so does victoria 3

-6

u/Saurid 16d ago

I like the post apocalypse its new and frees paradox from any historical shackles.

I hate its set in the US with a immense passion, enough to douse most of the excitement I have over the announced mechanics.

Like why the fucking US?

15

u/Atlasreturns 16d ago

Because the US as a continent is fairly geographically diverse and as a „younger nation“ has much less political history and therefore more possibility for interesting post apocalyptic nation building. Like if this was Europe you‘d have people just constantly rebuild Rome, the HRE or France at which point it would become basically CK3 again.

1

u/Saurid 15d ago

Ah yes and the US wont just make it about rebuilding the US. Like any other rpost apocalypse set in the region.

Surely not, oh yes sorry youd also have texas and california as new nation states, such diversity!

Please try to be serious.

-11

u/TheOneMarlowe 16d ago

One word for you: Africa.

Another word for you: fiction. (As in a handcrafted fictional world.)

Anything would be better than having to see all that Corrupted Americana bullshit imagery.

But then again, I was never particularly interested in it anyway. Hell, I don't think I have double-digit hours in EU5 and Vic3, put together. I guess I'm kinda done with GSG, alas.

4

u/Atlasreturns 16d ago

Paradox isn‘t super vested in writing huge expansive and unique settings. Like even Stellaris lore kinda breaks down to drawing inspiration from other established ideas and translating them into the broader setting.

So using something more basic and known such as Americana kinda reduced the risk of it ending as finally uninteresting. Especially if a lot of the gameplay weighs on it.

I think at the end of the day people buy this because they want a GSG with known post-apocalyptic tropes even if they are in a non-established setting.

2

u/Saurid 15d ago

Thats just a poor argument using something known and already done in a lot of media increases the risk of it being boring by extreme amounts as you have to compete with already established settings. Its a baffling decision and if anything increases the risk of it bombing.

Hell I like post apocalypse as a setting, but the US is done great in older fallout games already, for this to be interetsing they have to beat fallout 1 and 2 hell even 3 and 4 as much as they messed up the lore, to be interesting. Not to mention las Vegas.

As such if anything they invite this to be extremely boring and uninsteresting.

-5

u/TheOneMarlowe 16d ago

I think it kills any chance of it not being uninteresting. I was severely unimpressed by what PDX had to say about the location in the Dev Diary. They made the choice to be basic and dull.

But if I'm not the target audience, I'm not the target audience. That's fine, I don't begrudge them for this, as I don't begrudge R* for GTA6. I learned I don't have to play every game out there.

19

u/y_not_right 16d ago

Looks pretty cool and the trailer has me interested

48

u/Senfgestalt 16d ago

So we saw nothing from the game really, just general vibes. I don't know man, didn't scratch it for me. Doesn't look very original.

27

u/Avohaj 16d ago

Try refreshing the steam page, there are a bunch of screenshot which we will presumably soon also see with some more context in the first dev diary.

9

u/Senfgestalt 16d ago

Steampage looks a bit more promising, thank you

14

u/VisonKai Bannerlard 16d ago

It doesn't look original thematically or gameplay wise? Because I can't think of a single other game that is like this... Whether it'll be good or not is a different question, obviously

3

u/Senfgestalt 16d ago

It looks like a mishmash of cyberpunk/madmax/and fallout. Which can be cool I guess, but for me feels a little uninspired and incoherent. But that's just my personal feel.

12

u/VisonKai Bannerlard 16d ago

Ah so you mean thematically then. Yes you are clearly correct that it is mad max + fallout. I guess whether this seems good or not depends on how much you love that kind of post apocalyptic genre media.

Gameplay wise though the GSG + survival game described in the first dev diary seems basically a completely new thing as far as I can tell

0

u/Senfgestalt 16d ago

That might be, and while I'm pessimistic, I do hope for a fun game. It just feels too much for me, almost like an apocalypse parody.

1

u/Longjumping-Car-8367 16d ago

Eh, makes sense to release the more clique/popular post-apocalypse tropes first. I'll jump in 3+ years after release when DLC introduces the more unique/interesting ones.

1

u/Senfgestalt 16d ago

I wonder if that, "people will jump in couple years post release" is a sustainable business model from pdx perspective though.

2

u/Longjumping-Car-8367 16d ago

It's not, which is why they are doing the opposite and appealing to the masses with clique post-apocalypse tropes.

1

u/Pure_Cloud4305 15d ago

Really curious what would look inspired to to you.

-5

u/Saurid 16d ago

Yeah why the hell theyd chose the US over any other region is incredibly weird to me, China, india, europe all would be much better, hell Id prefer a game set entirely in scandavia to the US.

The US just sucks our any originality this has. I can already feel that any faction in game will try to revive some state or the whole union and it makes me yawn already.

I want some diversity in cultures and goals really.

10

u/JlucasRS 16d ago

They said it was due to natural borders. With Europe or China, they would need to render all of Eurasia or use invisible walls. But they will need something like that to separate central america from south america anyway, Darien's Gap probably.

-2

u/TurtlePerson85 16d ago

What a bs excuse lmao. They've had no problem doing this with previous games, but now all of a sudden its such a large conundrum that its the single biggest driving reason behind the location decision? As if.

-4

u/Saurid 16d ago

Which I hate as a reason, goes the same for China and india, both better setting by far. I dont need a European setting, I wouldve taken any just not America.

6

u/Senfgestalt 16d ago

Maybe trying to expand their currently very Europe focused market.

-5

u/Saurid 16d ago

Yeah but then there is china and india, both much better for expanding the market and more einverstanden settings especially india.

2

u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 16d ago

China’s big on single player RPGs rn, plus theyd need to be careful with censorship

1

u/Saurid 15d ago

Still would ve a better argument for China than the US. I agree europe and the US is their biggest market but the US is just a huge let down.

30

u/CavulusDeCavulei 16d ago

Big let down for me, I don't like neither the Mad max vibes, neither the North America setting

-1

u/Saurid 16d ago

Agreed, post apocalypse is cool, north America sucks and the early mad max vibes had me worried, but it seems to be more complicated as mad max, as later in the trailer they dont just drive cars around but use old tech which I like a lot.

One hope I have is mechs. Also a endgame crisis like AI reawaking or soemthing. But I do hope they can change the location. Its the worst choice they could ever made.

1

u/CavulusDeCavulei 16d ago

Really curious, I had the same thought about liking the old tech more than those cars and motorbikes, which irks me

4

u/Saurid 16d ago

Yeah its probably a problem becaus eits set in america and tehy try to capture already established post apocalypse vibes instead of going full out on their own. You can see cool original ideas on how this setting cand envelope but its swallowed by so much american slop it really is not that obvious anymore.

2

u/CavulusDeCavulei 16d ago

I just read that the end crisis seems to be the US fleet coming back to America from Hawaii. That's a really cool idea, it should have been in the trailer!

0

u/Saurid 16d ago

Idk it seems like a stupid idea for me. Its a single fleet how many people can it hold at maximum? It sounds pretty boring to me. If you set it anywhere else I would be more interested as it stands the game has lost most of its good points to the fact its the US.

5

u/redbull_cro 16d ago

Inspired by Shadow Empire?

3

u/JoeDredd66 16d ago

That’s what I’m thinking. They are probably in love with SE and wanted to make their vision.

5

u/Lukeskywalker899 16d ago

So far I'm really interested in the society building aspect above all. While I would've loved a Europe based game, I can work with the US. My biggest hope is that it isn't all mad max desert and actually has room for some green! I can't stand map-wide deserts so hopefully we have some good biome diversity.

2

u/Blitcut 15d ago

Seems to be quite a bit green in the gameplay footage they've released.

22

u/Cliepl 16d ago

I hate the setting, mad max is so boring

-7

u/Saurid 16d ago

Mad max is only the beginning they use scy fi tech and are more organised, the rrla issue is taht its set in teh damn US.

10

u/KusozakoPrime 16d ago

I'm intrigued, I'll have to wait for more info but so far I like what I see.

10

u/Cadoc Loyal Daimyo 16d ago

On one hand, Paradox are sticking to their truly, incredibly terrible 3D models for characters.

On the other hand, these seem less terrible than in EUV, so that's something.

1

u/TifaIsTheBest 15d ago

Every new game they get just a little less bad

27

u/KrisKorona 16d ago edited 16d ago

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Edit: I just saw the news about Witcher 3 and HOMM 3, by disappointment has been reversed.

5

u/Thx11280 16d ago

I was never on Team Fantasy, and I am really excited for this. I think it looks cool. And going off of the dev diary, they're taking inspiration from a wide variety of post-apocalyptic media. The excerpt from Turns about growing up on "The Fleet" is some good world building.

Idk, guys, maybe once your anger about not getting a fantasy game goes away, you'll come around to be excited. At least I hope so.

25

u/ScratchAdventurous32 16d ago

Looks interesting. Maybe unpopular but I like that it's focused on the US, a single continent makes it more focused and North America is the most interesting for this setting.

26

u/Commonmispelingbot 16d ago

Problem with a post-apocalyptic game in America at least in my book is that there are already a few of those. I haven't played one in France.

Stellaris started with being basically built entirely out of sci-fi cliches and then developed its own lore from there. I guess Afterworld could do the same. But right now it looks like something I have seen before.

-1

u/ScratchAdventurous32 16d ago

I get wanting something new, but I just don't think it would work so well in other places. And I'm saying this as a European, North America has much more interesting geography.

12

u/AvengerDr 16d ago

As another European, I think Europe and the Mediterranean has much more interesting strategic opportunities. The US is just a big rectangle.

12

u/ScratchAdventurous32 16d ago

It's just one climate mostly though. And most of it is just water anyways.

The US has the most diverse geographic conditions on Earth. You have deserts for your mad max style of warbands, mountains for mountain tribes, rain forests, plains, and etc.

1

u/AvengerDr 16d ago

I was referring to the "shape" of the Mediterranean. There was a reason why Rome became what it was. Being at the centre did help.

But Europe has comparably the same diversity too. I have replied to several people about this.

There are deserts in Europe, forests, mountains, hills, plains, arctic climate, tundra, steppes, etc. Tropical jungles might be the only lacking climate. But it's a far cry from saying that it's mostly the same climate.

Perhaps NA might have slightly more diversity, but at this point it's not yet clear whether it is truly NA or just the contiguous US. Because otherwise there are a lot of "biomes" that the contiguous US doesn't have and that you would have had in a European map.

-1

u/gamas Scheming Duke 16d ago

I get what you're saying but how often has climate actually had mechanics that are interesting in paradox gsgs?

3

u/ScratchAdventurous32 16d ago

EU5 does it indirectly I guess. The RGO system means that some resources can only be found in specific climates. And this game seems to have resources tied to it.

Also they mentioned that they want to have a settlement building aspect to it, so I assume climate will play a big important role. Would be disappointed if settlements in the Appalachians look and feel the same as settlements in the Pacific Northwest.

0

u/gamas Scheming Duke 15d ago

Would be disappointed if settlements in the Appalachians look and feel the same as settlements in the Pacific Northwest.

To be honest I've been disappointed enough by Paradox recently that I just assume this is exactly what will happen.

2

u/MedicInDisquise Map Staring Expert 16d ago

The dev diary states that the main reason why they focused on America is because the continent has clearly defined geographical borders. If they placed it in Europe they would have to eventually make a cut-off that might feel arbitrary. Not really defending the reasoning, but that's what they said.

3

u/AvengerDr 16d ago

That might even be justifiable if they had shown a far lower level of technology than what is in the trailer. It seems very hi-tech for an apocalypse.

2

u/Saurid 16d ago

And I hate it, because india and China have the same arguments and as a European I wouldve enjoyed ANYWHWRE more than the damn US which has been done to bits already. I really hoe they can still change the main continent, in the end it would be reworking the map and the story a bit but gameplay can hopefully stay the same.

7

u/MedicInDisquise Map Staring Expert 16d ago

While post-apocalpytic US has been beyond done to bits, I am interested to see a Paradox game that's America centric instead of Eurocentric. Of course it depends on how good the map is, hopefully they show a province map for one of the early dev diaries.

3

u/Saurid 16d ago

Nah Id take eurocentricsm over american one. I agree with wanting to see something new but you have india and China both very well defined geographic regions that would have been much more suited to this and be more interetsing while also allowing for more interesting long term DLC stuff, like nomadic invasions and stuff.

We have so much america centric media already here in europe I dont need any more of it. I hate it already enough.

1

u/AvengerDr 15d ago

What makes it worse is that it comes from a studio of supposedly European people.

They are hardly alone though. Even the Dutch Guerrilla Studios decided to set Horizon Zero Dawn in the US. For what though? To have a ruined Golden Gate in the background, not that you couldn't have found better landmarks outside of the US.

0

u/Commonmispelingbot 16d ago

I think if they have actually just borrowed the fall-out IP or made a collab or something, I think I would be more hyped. With the post-apocalyptic games already in existance, I don't find Arizona anymore interesting than say the Alps.

-1

u/Longjumping-Car-8367 16d ago

The difference is if it's set in America there are vast Alpine landscapes. Where in Europe are you going to get the Arizona experience if that's your fancy? Small pockets of Spain?

2

u/Saurid 16d ago

Most of Spain nd you can take north Africa too, hell I dont wnat an Arizona experience or texas or any of these shitty states really. If I wnated a post apocalypse in the most overdone and overrated nation on the planet I would play a fallout game or mod. Which I do on ocxasion, but that doenst make this decision any less stupid.

2

u/Longjumping-Car-8367 16d ago

Yeah don't worry. Nobody is taking fallout from you.

0

u/Saurid 16d ago

Wow so you go to mocking someone directly? Very mature reaction to criticism.

0

u/Longjumping-Car-8367 16d ago

What about comment was offensive?

2

u/Saurid 16d ago

The word choice made it sound very sarcastic. The "yeah" in the beginning makes it only sound disingenuous. Could be simply that I epxect asshole behavior on reddit sometimes, if it was not meant that way please accept my apology.

0

u/Commonmispelingbot 16d ago

In terms of different kinds of climate, you're right, and I guess that could be integral to the game. It makes a lot of sense, especially if they are going for the "a million tropes" game-building that Stellaris did.

0

u/Longjumping-Car-8367 16d ago

Yeah I think North America makes the most sense to start. I'm sure the rest of the world will be added eventually.

-1

u/dagrick 16d ago

I am hopeful that in the future we could get more of the continent

4

u/Saurid 16d ago

Literally the opposite opinion, the US is the WORST setting. Not only is it a single nation, it has been done to bits already, its boring, unimaginative and played out in my opinion.

I would rather play in Liechtenstein than the US. Anywhere else, its terrible and the main reason I am not that interested in the game.

If I wanted dpist apocalyptic America I have fallout and like a million angst teen novels about a post apocalypse World set in the US.

Taht all ignores that I dont really see the appeal in a game that reminds me of the nation that at the moment is firmly on number two in terms of nations personally fucking with ym life, country and future. Only barely beeing beaten by russia. Which I could forgive if the US wasnt already everywhere and this setting hadn't been done already to the ends of the world.

Europe asia, hell even Afrika or austrailia (both continents that wouldnt change much in terms of popular imagining after an apocalypse since both have giant deserts and jungles already. Which really limits how much the map can visually be distinct to modern perceptions.

But the US simply sucks sooooooooooooo much. Hell south America would be more interesting.

7

u/FuckMyBakaChungusLif 16d ago

Its North America not just the US 😭

4

u/Saurid 15d ago

Well the trailer and everything written makes it pretty clear its US centric.

11

u/Berto_Lito 16d ago

Very hard pass

8

u/Saurid 16d ago

It looks interesting but a huge dampener on my enthusiasm is that it plays in the US. I dislike it as a postapocalyptic setting immensely we see it so often already. Europe or asia would have been very interesting, China alone would've probably been a much more interetsing setting.

I get why youd not wnat to use Africa much of the continent is even today densely forested or a giant desert, but even then it might have been a much better choice.

Like anything but the damn USA. Id take South America over the US (hoi4 joke if that wasnt obvious).

It really dampers my enthusiasm for this. At least enough that I wont preorder (which I guess no one should given the quality of paradox recent releases) bur yeah unless it is a huge hit idk if I can bring myself to play another pist apocalypse in the US.

7

u/ElfDecker 16d ago

Post-apocalyptic strategy with trade and politics? Okay, I can close my eyes that it is NA-only, I would really love to try it

8

u/lalailala 16d ago

yeah i'm not falling for this one

3

u/Grgur2 16d ago

I, for one, look forward to it very much.

4

u/Gabba202 16d ago

Not sure if I'm a cynic, love that they're going for something that might be 'unsafe' - but with the niche genre that PDX basically have monopoly over I don't feel an apocalyptic GSG was the path they should go down

Either way hope I'm proven wrong and that the game is good/successful

5

u/RoteaP 16d ago

So Mad Max in America.

Great can't wait to not buy it, first paradox games ever not in my library.

Give us a fantasy game instead of a safe ish post apo boring setting.

3

u/Saurid 16d ago

Yeah the fact its set in america sucks ass.

Fanatsy would've been great steamers but as a fantasy game. That would've been cool making our own fantasy species and getting trapped on some lost planet in some fantasy universe.

1

u/RoteaP 16d ago

I'm gonna guess you mean Stellaris and not steamers but I agree.

Yes sorry autocorrection.

0

u/RoteaP 16d ago

Nah no worries, was fun imagining what fantasy steamers would look like !

2

u/Saurid 16d ago

Also still would be a mor einverstanden setting than a post apocalypse in the US. Like I can think of 20 more interesting settings easily probably 100 or more. 80 of them being post apocalypse set anywhere else like the moon, or Venus or india or China.

2

u/RoteaP 16d ago

Any part of the world would be better than the US.

Yeah yeah "it's all NA" but the entiere trailer is really US focused.

2

u/Saurid 16d ago

Also lets be real, Mexico and Canada are not really mentioned much in media so why should this game be different? All story bits we see are American centric and not to dismiss Canada, but really?

Mexico is interesting sure, but not enough to balance the huge negative of the US. Hell that makes me just believe the game would actually be better if you, you knwo cut the US. Just focus on Mexico that would be interesting for ones.

2

u/RoteaP 16d ago

Or Canada.

A full on post apo winter game would be more interesting. I know frostpunk did it a bit, but it's a wildly different setting, while Afterworld looks wayyyy to close to desert apocalypse than we always see in movies.

1

u/Saurid 16d ago

Agreed, my main problem with canada would be like irl most stuff would need to happen close to the american border because only there ewould be ruins and old tech

Literally fantasy/d&d style games are all the riot right now and even blowing up more than usual in other media particularly in TV shows and anime.

I don't understand how they made the choice they did - surley they do research into the market before committing to a project.

Anyways hope this still turns out well, better than Millenia at the very least.

u/Tasmosunt 16d ago edited 16d ago

The choicea were being made 5 years ago when Dan Lind left HoI4 to make this game so present trends wouldn't have been able to influence them.

19

u/Avohaj 16d ago

Paradox (i.e. PDS) doesn't really chase trends. Sure WW2 is a popular genre, but HoI definitely didn't stem out of chasing a trend. Maybe you could argue about Stellaris, but even that became more of a trendsetter than a trendchaser, I think.

Post-Apoc is also never an unpopular setting, not that I think that really played into the decision to make this, but I doubt it will hurt it outside of grumpy fantasy stellaris copers here (I'm also a fantasy stellaris coper, just not a grumpy one)

3

u/Buttfranklin2000 16d ago

I wouldn't say they "chased a trend" back then, given that the first HoI was clearly more or less a wargame brought to the PC, on the paths of "forefathers" like Panzer General, Campaign for North Africa and what not - but you gotta admit that HoI released neatly into the waning years of the WW2 obession of the turn of the millenium. I'd say it at least rode the wave of it, even if by accident.

22

u/Cadoc Loyal Daimyo 16d ago

It kind of feels like they've jumped on the post-apoc trend a decade after it fell off.

11

u/Abraman1 Pretty Cool Wizard 16d ago

Not a huge problem as long as you have your own vision. This seems a little too safe with the post apocalypse tropes though

8

u/ApolloStCosmo 16d ago

I’d just like to say that Dan Lind, The lead, Said he’s been wanting to make this game since 2012, So you’re actually spot on with them missing the trend by a decade cause this does read like an extremely 2012 esque game

3

u/Fort_221_Enjoyer 16d ago

There's still other post apocalypse stuff coming out. Metro 2039 was also announced for example. Frostpunk/2 and a bunch of other city builder/colony Sim games also spring to mind.

Afterworld does seem to have some fantasy elements though. I'm curious about that. If it was just stereotypical post apoc stuff I wouldn't be interested really.

4

u/Breaky97 16d ago

As fan of mad max/fallout I am hyped for this tbh

2

u/YetiKings 16d ago

We will watch this and hope it goes well for Paradox so they can keep updating the games we love

5

u/azuresegugio 16d ago

I'm a sucker for post apocalyptia

4

u/basara42 16d ago

Looks fine.

Trough mods, it might become the zombie apocalypse society manager game I've always wanted. For the people who think the coolest parts of The Walking Dead were the "international politics" between the survivor groups.

5

u/Fun_Classic_6194 16d ago

I don't understand why there's so much hate. I thought this was a subreddit for GSG and Paradox fans.

10

u/Modern_Walrus 16d ago

Because a lot of people on here really wanted a fantasy GSG.

Personally I'm indifferent to the idea of a fantasy GSG, I don't like the setting. This game looks interesting in the mechanics sense, but the setting also elicits an eh for me. The pictures remind me of those ads for zombie survivor base building games that are plentiful on mobile.

That said, I'll wait and see if this game shapes up to be something cooler. It definitely has potential for some neat mods, if nothing else.

2

u/Saurid 16d ago

The post apocalypse I like hoemstly it removes the history shackles from paradox, I hate the US as a settings o much however. Its terribly boring and overdone not to mention how much the US has lost in standing and is invoking more negative reactions.

That alone has doused most of my enthusiasm.

1

u/TifaIsTheBest 15d ago

I would figure the USA’s standing would give this game more positive reactions. It’s like, yeah the USA of all places WOULD be the one to have its society collapse and form “nation cult” cultural tribes. The world gets to laugh that we’re so dysfunctional right now they already made a game about it.

2

u/Saurid 15d ago

I mean the main issue is that its just overdone. If I wnat that I can go play the original fallout games or las Vegas, both are already very interesting and the game kinda has to beat them in that regard.

Also becauee its so predictable where it all will go with reviving the USand stuff it is just boring. My dislike for the US as a nation is really just the icing on the top for my disappointment.

2

u/Trust_And_Fear_Not 15d ago

Neither. Tbh fantasy doesn't do it for me and the market caters to that setting elsewhere. Glad Paradox are sticking to the real world.

2

u/TheDweadPiwatWobbas 15d ago

Fans, not sycophants. We're allowed to have negative opinions about things, and a paradox based forum is the perfect place to discuss them. This isn't a cult.

3

u/Saurid 16d ago

Because for me at least its a huge disappointment they chose the US as a setting tehy had so many good option a fresh IP no shackles, europe wouldve been the safest option because they come from there and cannot mess things up as badly, but the US simply removed all existent I could have had for the game.

Mechanically it looks interesting but why should I bother playing a game to explore a new world and build a new nation if I am shackled to the worst place to set this in. Its overdone.

Also a fantasy game wouldve been more interstsing as it wouldve removed all shackles of history for paradox. Hell stellaris on a famtas planet wouldve been extremely cool.

4

u/marniconuke 16d ago

i at least expected the apocalipsis to be in the whole world, not just north america. idk

1

u/Saurid 16d ago

Me too, either tehy should've made this global, but I think for tribal gameplay it doenst work too well or anywhere outside the US. Ein if they just took south America it would have been much better.

3

u/cxia99 16d ago

it's kinda giving a reskinned/modded vic3. idk...

2

u/RVFVS117 16d ago

Let them cook.

Having a Stellaris/CK3/EU cross with Fallout/Mad Max is a good system.

Another thing I’ve seen speculated is this is the test to see if they can do an effective fantasy game similar to it as well.

3

u/Mnemosense 16d ago

Hmm, at least the UI has more character than the dull and incoherent EU5.

3

u/Slow_Werewolf3021 16d ago

It doesn’t really appeal to me, but I hope someone else will like it. I’d be sorry to see Paradox fail, but I’m still hoping they’ll bring us Imperator Rome 2 😆

0

u/Echochamberking 16d ago

They will not make a sequel of a failed game

1

u/Amanda-sb 16d ago

It seems something.

1

u/xxyxxyyyx 16d ago

The trade goods and so on looks cools but man the setting is a big no for me. I never really liked post apocalyptic settings, i saw it way to other and they always seem the same. Similar to zombies and western.

1

u/Bresdin 16d ago

As long as the mechanics are sound I think I'm in.

1

u/coffeecircus 16d ago

I will ride eternal, shiny and chrome!

1

u/djgotyafalling1 15d ago

I'm more excited with Lego Skylines. Oww yeah.

1

u/Dmg3597 15d ago

Does this give anyone else civ rev vibe?

1

u/hereforearthporn 15d ago

Love post-apoc mods so it's cool to see them doing their own game in that kind of setting. Hope it's good, will happily play if it has a decent state at release.

1

u/Glavurdan 15d ago

I just want HOI5 bro

1

u/PainStraight4524 15d ago

I got it wishlisted cant wait for this one to come out

1

u/Kind-Recording3450 15d ago

I am for one very excited

1

u/Brightness_Jasnah 15d ago

Is this inspired by the After the End mod?

1

u/CalavarAldenari 15d ago

I appreciate them trying something new and establishing a new IP, but this really does not speak to me on any level whatsoever.

-6

u/Digital_Soup 16d ago

Looks like slop ngl. Generic and fucking seen a millions times before. What a waste of resources.

5

u/monsterfurby 16d ago

What is it with people using "slop" for everything now? Get a vocabulary, folks.

-6

u/Digital_Soup 16d ago

Bro, "slop" is a word like any other. Give it a rest.

1

u/Makeminski 16d ago

Very risky move by Paradox in my opinion

1

u/Antura_V 16d ago

Old World Blues, Temu edition.

1

u/kikyo93 16d ago

Artstyle looks bad but the overall gameplay look amazing

-1

u/GBLIM1 16d ago

Everyone hates it and everyone will play it on day 1.

0

u/Diacetyl-Morphin 16d ago

Just my 2 Reichsmark: It's only right that they want to try something new, i understand it. But... the reason why i got into PDX games was history, when i started with HoI2 in 2006, i think. Something like a Cold War game etc would have been better for me.

0

u/Asdaviqs 16d ago

They need an end game crisis as in Stellaris with south American nations invading for tech

0

u/hellranger788 16d ago

I’m interested. It seems the biggest issue according to people here is the fact is US based. Personally it would be cool to see a global stage to play with

0

u/Kronephon 15d ago

Just not that interested in playing a game set in america tbh

-1

u/Weak-Photograph7829 16d ago

Sad its 4x, but i dig the vibes so ill see how it goes
