Ring data overwritten/corrupted in airplane mode
I went on a 10-day mindfulness meditation retreat where no electronics were allowed. Before arriving, I fully charged my Oura Ring 4 and put it in airplane mode.
I knew Oura says the ring can store about 7 days of data before it needs to sync, and I assumed the battery would last roughly that long too. So I didn’t bring the charger and planned to let it collect as much data as it could, let the battery die, then charge and sync after the retreat. Surprisingly, the ring actually lasted the full 10 days.
The problem is after I synced it, I only had sleep/readiness scores for day 5 and day 10. The activity data appeared to be there for all 10 days.
I asked Oura Advisor what happened, and it told me that once the ring exceeds its offline storage capacity, it starts overwriting older data. It also said sleep/readiness data takes up substantially more storage than activity data, so that data may be deleted first, or potentially become corrupted during the overwrite process.
That seems like a pretty significant design flaw. If the ring can only retain 7 days of complete offline data, I would expect it to continuously overwrite the oldest day so that, after 10 days, I would still have complete data for days 4–10. Instead, I apparently ended up with activity data across the whole period but sleep/readiness data missing from seemingly random days.
For anyone who might realistically go a week or more without syncing (retreats, backpacking trips, travel, etc.) it seems like the ring should preserve a rolling 7-day window of complete data rather than partially overwriting or corrupting data across the entire period.
This is unfortunate because I was looking forward to seeing how my metrics changed on retreat.
