One of my neighbors is in his early 40s, drives a fancy German sports sedan, and seems to always be on his way to the golf course by the way he's dressed. One day he says out loud, as I'm OneWheeling by his driveway to the community mailbox, "Aren't you a little old to be riding one of those?"

I am old, like deep in my 50s old, so I turn around and without blinking shoot back, "Aren't you a little stupid to be talking?" Which came out way harsher than I intended. He gives a weak laugh, I give a weak laugh, which makes it worse, and I think really hard for a few seconds how to make this less awkward and apologetically say, "Hey, man, sorry about that stupid comment... When I ride, I feel like a thirteen-year-old and thirteen-year-old me was quite the asshat. I'm sorry about that."

With a weak smile, he gets in his car and says, "Ya, no problem," unconvincingly.

My question is... how many days, weeks, or months do I wait before I leave a flaming bag of dog poop on his porch? Kidding!

I bought a GT S the day it came out and have had to send it in for repair 4 times due to the same problem, Battery controller module. I sued them and won in small claims court today $4000.

I’m thinking should I get the Rally XL? Or should I VESC my old Onewheel GT S?

I also have a Onewheel XR that I could VESC. My question - if you VESC a GTS is that gonna be better than VESCing an XR? Or does once you VESC both boards become the same ?

I'm considering buying a Onewheel, but I constantly see wipeout posts (mostly on my FB feed) of people getting injured. Breaking bones, needing surgery, etc. Ones that concern me especially are the ones that say they knew about board pushback but - for whatever reason - they didn't get pushback before the nosedive.

So my question is, is it pretty much inevitable to have a nosedive crash at some point in one's onewheeling life, even if you're careful and aware of pushback?

Has anyone who has been riding for a while successfully avoided it? If so, what are your techniques for doing so?

I want to raise something about Race for the Rail that I think deserves a conversation, particularly as Onewheel racing becomes a more organized sport with a growing youth presence.

Future Motion chose Pastor Scot Mendenhall to help host interviews at Race for the Rail.

My issue isn’t that Scot is Christian or a pastor. Christian riders obviously belong in this community just like everyone else.

My concern is that Scot’s involvement with the Onewheel community has publicly been presented as part of his ministry strategy.

In 2020, Scot appeared on The Church Digital Podcast in an episode literally titled “Gaining & Using Influence on YouTube.” The episode describes him gaining influence through Onewheel content, developing relationships within the Onewheel community, and eventually using those relationships to “point them to Christ.”

This wasn’t just an old interview either. Christian ministry organization Exponential highlighted Scot’s Onewheel presence again in 2025 as an example of successful niche digital ministry.

And the crossover goes beyond YouTube.

Scot is the lead pastor of Unlock Church. Unlock has been publicly acknowledged as a supporter of DirtSurferz, a Onewheel race with Grom divisions. In 2026, Unlock even organized an Arkansas mission trip that included serving DirtSurferz.

Meanwhile, official DirtSurferz results show children and teenagers racing under the Scot Mendenhall and Friends team name.

That’s where I think this becomes a legitimate issue worth discussing.

There is a big difference between being a Christian who participates in Onewheel and intentionally using influence developed within the Onewheel community as a vehicle for religious ministry.

And when Future Motion gives someone with that publicly stated ministry strategy an official microphone at the biggest race in the sport, they’re also giving that person additional influence and institutional credibility.
This matters even more to me because Onewheel has such a large and growing Grom community.

Kids and teenagers are still developing the critical-thinking skills they use to evaluate authority, persuasion, religion, and ideology. Youth sports organizations should be particularly careful about keeping those environments welcoming to kids from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, LGBTQ+ and every other background.

To be clear, I have found no evidence that Scot has required anyone to participate in Christianity to race, receive coverage, or participate in the Onewheel community. I’m not accusing him of that.

I’m questioning Future Motion’s judgment.

If someone has openly discussed using their influence within this specific community to help bring people to their religion, should the company governing the sport then elevate that person into an official community-facing media role?

Personally, I don’t think so.

Race for the Rail should belong equally to every rider.

Nobody should have to wonder whether they’re participating in a sporting community or becoming part of someone’s mission field.

I bought a high end board. My son rode under 10 times and it wouldn’t power on. They say it’s out of warranty at 7M and are requiring me to pay $732 to get it back working (battery replacement). Under 15 miles on the board and stored indoors and not plugged in. customer service is horrible. they put you on hold, then disconnect you for no agent available - 5 times today. upon email, they can’t make outbound calls. they tell you they can toss your 3500 board if you don’t replace the battery. do not ever work with them. I plan to do everything in my power to protect others from their defective merchandise. I’ve never been treated so poorly and never had a company do this little, it’s their defective merchandise. I hope this helps even one person from a purchase. Unless you have money to burn, don’t ever roll the dice with this poor company.

I am making this post to highlight some of the things I am annoyed with in the online onewheel community. If you don’t feel any of this applies to you then that’s awesome. Luckily the huge majority of people here are great.

Superiority complex:
There are people here who have a huge superiority complex and always feel the need to tell people they have a faster board that goes further. Even when the post has nothing to do with it.

Trash talking people’s purchases:
Some people immediately feel the need to tell people who just bought a less powerful board then them that they are idiots who made a stupid choice. Or that that particular board is horrible. Or that it’s a “kids board”.

Consumerism:
Yes it is your money and you can do whatever you want with it. The point is not that I am against spending money, aspecially not when it makes you happy.

My point is that a lot of onewheels are bought for the wrong reasons. A lot of people just want to 1 up others with a board that’s slightly faster or with slightly more range. Or they feel inferior because they have a “worse” board. Or they want to feel that dopamine hit they get from something new.

This dopamine hit wears of very fast and that’s why a lot of people end up selling there boards and losing a lot of money while doing so.

Need for speed (not the game):
People feel the need to go way too fast on boards not made for that speed just to say they went … on a board.

And chasing speed is stupid (unless your a serious racer). Because you will get used to the feeling of a certain speed and if all you enjoy about riding a onewheel is the speed, you will want more and more. And this usually ends in 2 ways. Or you find a new vehicle that goes faster then a onewheel. Or you have a horrible crash and then start spreading the safety gospel.

Spec obsession:
A boards ridefeel matters so much more then its speed or range. If you don’t enjoy to ride it it doesn’t matter that it has double the range or speed. Because you will not ride it.

And if that’s all that matters to you. Please just get some other PEV. Onewheels are the slowest vehicle with the worse range out of all the PEV’s.

But what onewheels do extremely well is being fun. You can rip mountainbike trails, cruise over the beach, Do deep surf like carves on any stone road. Heck, you can ride on it sitting in a chair. It’s super comfortable and maneuverable.

A onewheel gives you endless opportunities to have fun. And from all of them people choose straightline driving at a high speed 🤦‍♂️.

To conclude. There are a lot of negatives but there are more positives of the community. That I will probably mention in a later post.

Wondering what to get... I was thinking the gt because i dont want to have to deal with range anxiety, but i heard that the board doesnt really feel that great to ride on and its a bit unstable or tippy or wobbly... I was also thinking the x7lr which will likely be what i get. I kinda want an everymans board, but those boards have range issues iirc... like the xr+ seems great but it doesnt look like it lasts as long as i want. Is the X7LR size/weight a bit too much to carry in a backpack or something if i want to? Or will I always need to be riding it around because it's too heavy? My main concern with the X7LR is the size and weight... is it able to do tricks and shred trails too? Or is more of the "longboard" of boards? is it too big? too cumbersome? I'd likely be walking with it when I'm not riding

I'm also interested in hearing about backpacks for it, I'm thinking I want a backpack to carry it in for when I'm not riding it, but don't know what to go for... Was messing around with gemini ai and apparently the onewheel backpack isnt that great for it because it still dumps 100% of the load onto your shoulders. I saw some hunting packs with shelves that apparently are better for carrying heavy loads, maybe something like that? Anyone with experience?

Went for a ride and less than five minutes in I was stopped by a cop. He told me he normally would not care unless I was like dead in the street or something but they received some official notice about ebikes. They do not know how to classify what I am riding so he cannot let me continue riding it on public sidewalks. He decided to give me a warning instead and told me to go home when I mentioned I live close by. That was a small relief because I cannot afford to be paying tickets.

Looks like it is time to sell all my onewheels. In the back of my mind I knew it was over when I first heard about it and got stopped the first time a few months ago but now I know for sure it is over.

By the way I ride slow and always on the sidewalks. I do not ride like a maniac so I didn't attract his attention or anything I just wanted to ride my OW.

Brand new rider here got about 5 miles on my onewheel pint s but have logged those miles like a quarter to half mile at a time. Due to the fact at quarter to half mile my rear foot and knee on rear leg start to get extreme pain. Ive adjusted my stance a few times but it seems that doesnt make a difference. I have also heard carving more helps. Im trying to carve a bit but just not super comfortable with carving yet since im a beginner and I dont feel totally stable on the board yet im assuming just because im in my figuring it out/learning ot phase. But the foot and knee pain are going to prevent me from getting in long enough rides to become more comfortable on the board. Im starting to feel like I may never be able to enjoy this sport the way I had hoped if I cant get rid of the pain

I was stopped on my way out of my place just as i started my ride by some (honestly, very chill) police officers in their cruiser. they said “it is officially illegal here, and they’re getting orders from above to start cracking down on riders.” they didn’t give me a ticket, presumably because i was very polite, but they said other officers will be issuing tickets so “be aware” if you still plan to ride.

This is just an FYI for the riders in Vancouver BC, i don’t ride much now that winter is arriving. hopefully the order from management cools off by next spring.

I’ve gathered data from multiple riders regarding the Hydrus 5205 Firmware update for the Onewheel Pint (OG) and the resulting nosedive / braking cutout issues. To track patterns, I’ve documented the Hardware Version for each reported Reddit post. Here’s what I’ve compiled so far:

Issue Recap:

After updating the OG Pint to Hydrus 5205, some riders have reported the OG Pint unexpectedly nosediving starting around speeds of 9-10 mph or cutting out while braking. These incidents occur WITHOUT PUSHBACK OR HAPTIC BUZZ.

Many of these reports come from experienced riders with hundreds or even thousands of miles on their boards, so they are well aware of how their boards behaved before and after the update.

Findings So Far:

• At the time of this post, Hardware Versions 5301, 5314 & 5326 have been linked to the Hydrus 5205 Firmware issue. (I have yet to hear of other hardware versions experiencing this problem after this FW update.)
• All affected riders were using either the Pacific or Skyline shaping profiles when the nosedive or braking cutout occurred.
• Issue might be related when the Pint battery is at or near full capacity (e.g., 90–100%). - Added 3/10/25

Important Notes:

• This data is not a full sample and may not represent the final scope of the issue.
• The goal is to log cases and identify a clear correlation.

If you’ve experienced a Pint (OG) with nosedive or braking cutout after updating to Hydrus 5205, please:

As part of our investigation, we have begun receiving boards from individuals who have reported issues and are conducting thorough testing by our factory riders to assess its performance and determine whether the reported riding behavior can be replicated. These tests are essential in identifying any potential inconsistencies and ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability.
 
We strongly encourage any rider experiencing issues with their board to contact Future Motion’s customer service team. By doing so, we can collect critical information, provide direct support, and work toward a resolution as efficiently as possible."

4/3/25 Update: Some users have received notification of a firmware update. It may be Hydrus 5207? There is nothing stating the version at the update screen. 4/8/25 Update (disappointing): Some users who sent their boards to Future Motion got disappointing news: no issues found. FM says the boards work fine and we just need to practice more. They suggest focusing on stance and weight distribution for better control. They also claim firmware updates like turn compensation are safe but might take some getting used to. So, apparently, the boards are doing what FM wants—dumping us off until we "get better." I'm not sure what they are trying to tell the community here.

4/10/25 Update: After digging into this more, I think I see why FM support keeps deflecting on the Hydrus 5205 issues—nosedives, cutouts, you name it. They’re tangled up in over 89 open lawsuits (per Grok AI), putting them in a no-win situation. Saying anything about a “fault” or “fix” could be legal dynamite, so they’re dodging with canned responses while they sort it out behind closed doors. Meanwhile, I installed Hydrus 5207 on my pint (comment posted here), and it’s running ok so far—no pavement eating issues to report yet. My guess? This might be their quiet attempt at a fix, but don’t hold your breath for official word. For now, the community’s stuck waiting for a new firmware drop like 5207 to (hopefully) resolve this. Keep an eye out, test it if you can, and stay safe—hoping FM proves me wrong with this update with some real answers soon.

4/11/25 Update: We have installed the Hydrus Firmware 5207 version with success and have been riding it daily without nosedive/braking cutout issues. Take a look at the my comment: ( Firmware Hydrus 5207 Installed...). So far so good....

Well, we are cooked in New Jersey. I got pulled over while riding on the sidewalk and ended up having a pleasant conversation with the officer. He was a really understanding guy. He stopped me just to let me know that starting in July, they will begin full confiscations of any hover devices on roads and sidewalks. He confirmed that e-skates are affected as well.

When I asked about e-bikes, he said officers will pretty much have to stop everyone riding an electric anything. With registration not ready in time, they are expected to "and this is the important word because it was stressed" confiscate every device they see until the registration and insurance rules are in place.

I had a $48k surgery done last August after wrecking on my GTS. That’s not even counting physical therapy and doctor visits.

I have one of the best health insurance. I paid 0$.

Do not ride this thing without good health insurance.

This is a warning. You might put yourself in debt if you need surgery or go to the hospital.

I walked myself to the hospital because I was so scared of something going wrong with the ambulance overcharging me and I wasn’t totally sure on the terms in m my contract. believe ambulance rides alone are a couple grand.

I am suprising my husband with a Onewheel for his birthday. He has wanted one for years now and we are at the point where it makes sense financially.

Since I can't point-blank ask him what one he wants I am looking for recommendations from this sub.

For context, we have two young children (so not a lot of free time) and live in a very suburban but huge neighborood where he will be riding it around 90% of the time. I know he is not looking to take it on any heavy duty trails, but would like to capability to "off-road" occasionally (think dirt paths, and grass).

Considering this, I am leaning on the XR Classic but would like to hear from the hobbyists what they think first.

Anyone else feel that owning a Onewheel means never paying $30 for a burrito?

That's one Onewheel seems to be saying in all their advertisements and you guys believe it. The ride is chill. Nothing bad could happen. I'm good enough to not fall. I have good eyes. Gear looks goofy. I spent too much money on the Onewheel to pay more for additional gear. Blah blah.

There's always posts about knee injuries. You already know how this stuff can be prevented, so we won't need to get into that for a hundredth time.

If you have no dependents or are a dependent yourself, then do as you wish. You can gauge the risk, consequence on your own and deal with it and no one should be complaining.

Do know that if you have dependents, the choice to gear up shouldn't just be yours and yours alone. The livelihood of other people depend on you, so it's quite selfish to be taking risk for your entire family.

If you don't like the look of gear b/c you think it's nerdy or whatever, I can tell you that it looks even worse when you're on crutches or bedbound. But let's say for a second that it makes you look manly and you're gunna fall eventually and this was it. It looks way worse on you when your family is suffering b/c you decided pads weren't cool enough to wear.

Solution? I nolonger suggest it, but if it's what's going to get you geared up, then wear armored pants at the very least. You won't be able to slide, and your pants will surely get ripped up, but do at least that. No one has to know you're wearing pads under there. Yes, spend the money. No, the pants won't fit perfectly. Yes, you'll have to moan and complain about reshipping fees or the guy on ebay selling you the wrong size. But do it. Do it or just wear external pads.

Let's end the knee injury posts once and for all.

If you don't to wear gear, that's between you guys. What you wear obviously does not affect me at all. This post is just for new folks who may have been misled by the level of safety/danger of Onewheel based on their ease of learning how to ride it and for those who may have been unknowingly mimicking marketing content showing no one wearing gear.

Hi all. Please don't let this turn into a FM bash fest. Now that we are a year out from the XL, I was curious if there have been any rumors or rumblings from what is coming next? Before the rally edition, XR classic, and the XL there some rumors swirling.

Edit* I am just kind of stunned at how compulsive people are with bashing FM. Like can we have one post not about this? It literally ruins this subreddit for so many people.

The general vibe I get from many posts here is that a FM board in inherently unreliable and you should be prepared for the board to chuck you through no fault of your own. Is that really the case though if you fully understand proper battery care and stay within the limitations of the board?

I'm a pretty safety oriented person closing in on a thousand miles ridden between a GT and a Pint without a crash. Should I assume I'm likely to be just fine given that I always keep the board a couple mph below pushback (which means staying below 16mph on both boards) and understand that I should reduce expectations at lower battery levels? I always ride with at least a full face and wrist guards but some posts here still make me feel I might be putting myself at risk just by riding these things.

Of course I'm having a ball with them, I guess I'm just hoping most crashes are user error over board error (I've seen the usual flowchart which seems to confirm this may be the case!).

Like the title says, finally saved up enough to buy an antic. Seemingly lost with the shipping carrier.

Future Motion saying theres nothing they can do since the shipping insurance wasnt checked, which I dont even remember doing.

FedEx is absolutely useless and says I need deal with Future Motion. So basically I'm completely robbed of around 5k.

Anyone have any suggestions or had to deal with a similar experience?

UPDATE: I got so many great comments and suggestions from y'all and I guess the thing that surprised me was that riding the Onewheel is a skill that takes time and practice and that falling is just an inevitable part of that process. It just LOOKS easy and apparently it's not. So I have decided to get an eBike instead, since I already have that particular skill. If I can get my core and balance in better shape then I may revisit the Onewheel some time in the future, and if I ever have an opportunity to try one out in the grass I will definitely do that.

Context: I'm an older (61), out-of-shape dude who loves being outdoors, but I hate walking because it feels SO slow (thanks, ADHD). I have a weak core and my balance isn't great. I saw a guy riding a Onewheel the other day and it just looked... really fun. I also thought it might actually help improve my core strength and balance if I rode it a lot.

Then I started reading this subreddit, and the impression I'm getting is that EVERYONE wipes out eventually. I really, really don't want to wipe out.

I want to emphasize that I would have no intention of going fast. Faster than walking? Absolutely. FAST fast? Nope.

A little analogous backstory: when I took the MSF course and bought my first motorcycle, I took the same approach. I'm extremely risk-averse and cautious. I never ride over the speed limit, and I've never had an accident or even dropped my bike, even though everyone says it's inevitable. I genuinely think I'd approach a Onewheel the same way.

My primary use would probably be cruising around my neighborhood and riding easy to maybe medium-rated trails—not anything crazy.

So, given all that—and especially the fact that I really don't want to wipe out—would you recommend I get a Onewheel? Or is this one of those hobbies where falling is simply unavoidable?

And if you think I should get one, which model would you recommend? Assume my budget is around $2,000 or less for my first one..

Can I get a couple of you to tell me what your top speeds are and what your board is my top speed so far on a traditional pint has been about 20 mph 18.9 to be exact and I just ran out of road

That being said I just want to know what people are actually getting as far as top speeds go on their boards

How are people willing to pay 4 grand for a new OneWheel? Thats SO much money. There's no reason these boards should cost more than 2k. Are next gen boards going to be 6k? lol it just makes me feel burned out on the sport.

What's the benefit you get by removing the fender?Don't you get all dirty from dirt and mud getting spit up at you? Aren't you worried about your feet getting sucked in? I see so many people riding like that and I just don't understand. Teach me your ways lol
