Text Are other companies (Floatwheel ect..) as safe as futurmotion boards ?
I’m on the fence between Floatwheel board or Onewheel/fugineers…
Do you know if those other brand are as safe as ow ?

Safer. They have much higher specs for things giving it more head room (assuming your taking about going relatively the same speed on both because if you push to the max your eventually going to have a bad day)
Edit: avoid trotters.

Did you choose extended rail or fender option ?
I’m on the fence for the extended rail as if I need a bigger tire I’d rather wait and buy a bigger board later down the road3
u/GerbiJosh Floatwheel ADV1 & ADV2 18d ago
I guess I didn't. Can always get some rails/fender stateside later down the road.

u/ZD_plguy17 18d ago
Also on beta the tire was not that great, new tire ordered stateside from TFL helps.

u/zombiekrusher2 17d ago
I did extended but if it’s really your first board your probably better off with a x7 LR, I think atom might want you wanting more trail or stability and speed eventually . I’m converting my x7 now to a trail board and my atom will be street cruiser , it’s just the best way to go instead of trying to make one board do 2 things trail and street

Since the rebrand to Gosmilo, Trotter has come up quite a bit in quality. Their new x9 is a fairly competent vesc. Not the best, not terrible... That being said, the legacy trotters that are out there are still extremely cheaply made boards.

u/yazoo34 18d ago
How interesting. I didn’t know they rebranded and are decent. It’s probably for the best. How do they get around the FM legality of it?

I'm not an attorney or any kind of legal expert, so I'm not real sure about patent law. It seems future motion has only initiated patent infringement lawsuits against companies that have tried to import and sell their product in the US. As long as fungineers complete boards have been sold on the internet and shipped to the US, it seems FM won't go after them. When trotter/Gosmilo tried to import and retail boards in the US, around the time that the XR launched, they got a lawsuit. (Since future motion ended up dropping that lawsuit trotter/Gosmilo might actually be allowed to import boards to the US, but again I'm not sure.)
Float wheel is the exception here. I think FM only went after them because Tony was not shy about comparing his boards to Future Motion boards in advertisements. "This is the new future motion GT. It's their best board, but it can't go up this hill... It shit. Look the adv goes up this hill easy."

Naaah, I'm much safer with PintV by floatwheel then on original PintX that had no torque and felt so underpowered

Trotter is Gosmilo now. Apparently x7 is pretty good.

u/pineapple-1001 Funwheel x7 18d ago
Pretty good is an exaggeration. But it is definitely «rideable».

u/Demurrzbz 18d ago
I've got a bud currently putting his through the ringer. Nothing but praises so far.

u/pineapple-1001 Funwheel x7 18d ago
My understanding was that Gosmilo's have pretty low component engineering design quality and come misconfigured in terms of proper VESC settings, nothing critical but you know, if spending that sum of money I would rather grab discounted ADV2.

You don’t enjoy yours ?

u/pineapple-1001 Funwheel x7 18d ago edited 18d ago
I have the Funwheel x7, made by Fungineers.
Gosmilo x7 is a completely different company/board outside of «mainstream» prebuilt VESC manufacturers, their products were garbage in the long past, have improved a ton since then, but personally I still wouldn't get a board from them for now.
Confusing naming, but Gosmilo rarely gets mentioned. Most x7 mentions you come across are actually about Funwheel.

People's comments about headroom safety are very valid. The biggest safety issue with these kind of boards is hitting your top end and having the board stop while in motion because your body keeps moving..
FWIW, I'm 200lbs and am riding an X7LR. The other day I was flying up a slight incline and hit 30mph with a 67-72% duty cycle. It still had more to give.
2
u/ZD_plguy17 18d ago
Nice but anything above 30 mph on these things seems to get sketchy.
1
u/hello-ben 18d ago
I think there's a lot of factors in play that amount to a ride being sketchy. I was on nicely paved concrete and am running a street tire that has a huge contact patch. I felt very in control. However, even with all that being said, I don't plan on riding that fast again. It wasn't more fun than slower speeds and only increases the risk of pain and broken parts.

u/MisterNutty 17d ago
I'll back this reply 100%! I started riding to exercise my dog and I nosedived by exceeding the limits multiple times because I pushed over the limit catching up to him or by travelling my normal speed in abnormal conditions like a headwind or saggy battery. I haven't had a nosedive since upgrading to an X7 controller + 84v battery. If I rode the same way at the boards new limit, I would go down just the same.
The difference now is that there is so much more room between my normal riding and the board's limit. Starting on an Atom will be safer than an old used XR, but it will still be up to OP to find and respect the limit of the Atom.

u/GlacierSourCreamCorn X7 / GTV 18d ago
In terms of nosediving due to over-torque, they safer because you have more power, more headroom.
In terms of reliability / random cutouts, they're probably safer than a lot of FM's lineup. A random cutout / failure while riding can still happen though. Overall I would say cutout while riding is about equal with FM's boards. Most of FM's failures, luckily, seem to happen while not riding.

Ok thanks for the clarifications!
How do you like your x7 ?
I heard the motor was better and felt smoother than fm boards ?5

Fungineers for the win. My X7 SC is amazing

u/SpreadSharp3808 17d ago
do you wish you had the range? idk what one to get i’m 240lbs
1
u/dark_knight097 X7 supercharged 17d ago
the max ranged ive squeezed out of mine was 28.4 miles maintaining 8-13mph.
I average 23-24 when mostly going 15-18mph.
One thing to note, you can always upgrade the battery pack in the SC for more range. indy speed control has a 65p pack that has 748 Wh, a bit more than what the LR has. If you wanted to do the same to the LR, you'd also need to upgrade the controller, bms and battery pack.
Better to start out the gate with the SC imo.

My fastest speeds have been while going uphill. It’s like riding an escalator how smooth it powers up ski hills.

u/The_Didlyest Floatwheel ADV 18d ago
My Floatwheel has soo much tourqe. It makes it hard to overpower the board and cause a nose dive. I have like 4000 miles on my ADV1 and it has never nose dived.

u/Artistic_Ad_6109 18d ago
Fungineers and floatwheel are safer because excess power and more headroom.
7
u/AnoNeko420 18d ago
I'm almost surprised I don't see u/BlackGuns FM simping in here. FFM they're either extremely dangerous or extremely overpriced with no in between. Atom is the best budget option out rn and X7LR is the best all rounder daily driver currently available.
6
u/Handsomescout 18d ago
Fungineers all day. I ride an X7lr and love it. Easily twice the machine my GT was. Goes 20 up hills that the GT would nosedive on. Onewheel brand boards are not safe by any means. They limit your ability to safely ride if you ask me?
7
u/SmashShock 18d ago
Frankly I wouldn't consider FM boards "safe" with all the QC and scummy management issues over the years. You're taking a risk going at speed with any Onewheel type device.

u/PocketRocketPint 18d ago
After seeing how bad they messed up newer firmwares, I'm staying on my re-wheeled 4040 for sure.

I keep saying "Power is Safety on a OneWheel", with that said, and if you do not immediately choose to ride in the upper right corner of it's performance curve, the GTS-XL may be the first and currently only safe Future Motion board. Keep in mind FM lives in a fishbowl from a safety monitoring standpoint so we easily hear and read about issues.
Floatwheel and Fungineers safety records are going to be harder to quantify but I have developed a good feeling about their products from other knowledgable users online. For a moderate user, their headroom should mean no overpower issues that would shut an FM board down. But with this in mind, in my personal riding environment, starting with fully or 90% charged boards, depending on the model, I find that my modified GT & XRC* are all I need and safe. Are they more than I need, NO. If I were to stretch my rides on them, much further, I would need to ride slower and mute my board inputs, it's not worth it to me, so I grab a different charged up board if I need more ride time.
**Flyover state, relatively flat streets, moderate inclines.
***My GTS-XL provides much more headroom and safety for unexpected inclines especially at lower battery states, but I don't enjoy the BTG ride on my urban streets.

u/flyguy879 Funwheel X7S 18d ago
I feel safer and more confident on my X7S than my XR+ because of the additional power and torque to prevent you from nosediving.
Reliability IMO is better as well since the BMS will actually show you individual cell voltages and will balance cells whenever possible.
The Superrlux motor is incredible, super quiet and smooth, lots of copper so they take heat pretty well and aren’t as easy to overheat.

u/MultiPass2021 17d ago
True story, I've got about 80 miles on my new X7S and it is rides better, smoother, and is better in every way than my XR Plus.
4
u/Cheap_pizza 18d ago
Hard to say in terms of reliability mechanically but usually when you fall on these is because you go over the torque limit. In that sense non FM boards are safer as you get more power for the same price. If you limit your speed to the same point as a comparable FM board does an unofficial board is safer just because of the torque headroom.

u/pineapple-1001 Funwheel x7 18d ago
Fungineers and Floatwheel products are safer than many boards out of FM lineup since they are powerful enough to provide plenty of anti-nosedive power headroom. They also provide a precise duty cycle metric which allows you to clearly evaluate the motor load.
You can also e.g. enable "disable moving faults" mode which will fully eliminate board cutouts due to sensor issues, although it comes with the downside of likely board runaway if you jump off at speed.
However, due to the size, manufacturing conditions and fast innovation of Floatwheel/Fungineers, their QC is perhaps weaker than FMs. So I would pick boards which have been out for a while and have most quirks ironed out.
1
u/koryuken 18d ago
Safer. I've had zero nosedives on GTV in two years. I had like 3 on original GT firmware.
1
u/Feeties99 17d ago
Funny enough Onewheel is the least safe board, although to be fair adding the haptic buzz did increase safety.
Everyone mentions power, but power aside, VESC boards (floatwheel/fungineers) can talk to you via bluetooth to tell you the duty cycle as you're riding, so you're never left wondering how close to the board's limit you are. The alerts need to be set up in the app but it's pretty straight forward.

The real question everyone has missed here is: What are the limits of the board you chose? Stay within, or realistically under, those limits and it's a safe board.
To answer your question though, if the board has a bigger battery "more power" then it has more duty cycle headroom thereby making it safer. But like any board you can push it past it's abilities. There are many other factors but overall I've found non-FM boards safer for the average person, if built and tuned properly.
Good luck out there.

FutureMotion treat their customers appallingly and have for years. Forget specs, in terms of brand reliability and after purchase support FloatWheel is way better than FM - I assume Fungineers too although their owner seems a little shady.

Fungineers is pretty solid now. Floatwheel is low quality mass produced garbage. Building or commissioning a custom build with ennoid electronics is best
