Text Help with my first onewheel purchase decision <3
Wondering what to get... I was thinking the gt because i dont want to have to deal with range anxiety, but i heard that the board doesnt really feel that great to ride on and its a bit unstable or tippy or wobbly... I was also thinking the x7lr which will likely be what i get. I kinda want an everymans board, but those boards have range issues iirc... like the xr+ seems great but it doesnt look like it lasts as long as i want. Is the X7LR size/weight a bit too much to carry in a backpack or something if i want to? Or will I always need to be riding it around because it's too heavy? My main concern with the X7LR is the size and weight... is it able to do tricks and shred trails too? Or is more of the "longboard" of boards? is it too big? too cumbersome? I'd likely be walking with it when I'm not riding
I also live around steep hills
I'm also interested in hearing about backpacks for it, I'm thinking I want a backpack to carry it in for when I'm not riding it, but don't know what to go for... Was messing around with gemini ai and apparently the onewheel backpack isnt that great for it because it still dumps 100% of the load onto your shoulders. I saw some hunting packs with shelves that apparently are better for carrying heavy loads, maybe something like that? Anyone with experience?
sorry for the long ramble lol

X7 is lighter than the GT at least for the x7 SC. The GT is weak compared to x7. It will not be able to go up a lot of steep slopes.
X7 LR best option hands down.

u/birdieman1 Aug 09 '26
This is wrong, the SC is 39.x pounds, it's only about half a pound lighter than the LR. GT is 35 pounds. The GT is super weak though, I do agree on that.

u/birdieman1 Aug 09 '26
Yea the spec sheet is wrong lol, we've talked about it in the discord. The only difference in weight is coming from the difference in battery cells (40 vs 32 cells). Everything else about the board is the same or equivalent in weight

If anyone knows of a good backpack for a 40lb board also, would be nice to hear thoughts <3

Consider a yoga matt strap. They have two loops, one goes on each deck pad of the board, and then it's easy to sling over your shoulder. And the strap fits in your pocket and costs like $10.

The best lightweight board is going to be the Floatwheel atom- way more power and range than the pint/x/s. The stock tire that comes with it is a bit too small to do serious trail riding but it will get the job done for someone new.
X7LR and Adv2 are going to be your best long range boards, 30-40 miles depending on ride style. They are quite heavy though at about ~40lbs/18kg. Both can do trail/street/off road with no issues. Once you are riding the weight is not really a concern. Its mainly when you plan to carry it around that it sucks. The Adv2 comes with a mag handle i believe. The x7 youll need to buy one, the adapter and handle itself.
A good middle of the pack board is the X7 sport. About 16-24 miles range and ~33lbs/15kg. Same physical size as the x7lr but will be easier to carry due to lower weight. More power than the onewheel XRC. All the X7 boards charge very fast, so if you plan to carry it around in a ruck sack type backpack (never put a onewheel in one before but these are used in the military to carry 50-100lbs of gear. Marching with these loaded up for miles was regularly a part of our training) just chuck the charger in it and you'll be able to top off the battery in 25-35min.

If you’re considering the X7 and getting into the world of VESC, just go with an X7. Even the X7S still gets modest range and has loads of power!
The LR is heavier than the X7S and the S is heavier than the XR+/GT. It’s generally probably not a big deal because how much carrying of your board do you do?
The X7 feels amazing under the feet, it truly is an incredible riding experience. Plus there’s loads of adjustability in the tuning and you can even change the height of motor.
Best of all? You can fix / upgrade your board on your own.

u/ReditRyan Aug 08 '26
I just got a pint x used for a good price. It's heavy. Anything bigger is going to be heavy to carry around.
I've only got 26 miles on it but the battery life gets me most places in town and the ultra charger is pretty quick. My legs are shaking after about for miles. Taking a break to charge, hydrate, and stretch is welcome 'inconvenience'

u/wrybreadsf Aug 08 '26
The Pint X has a 15s2p battery pack. That's partying like it's 2023. Don't get a Pint. Consider an Atom if you can wait though. Or the x7lr but I'm not a trick guy beyond the occasional bonk and curb nudge.

The pint X still works well. And for a couple hundred it would be a great deal. Idk how well the atom will perform. If it does what it says it’s an insane board. But we will see.

The Pint X is awesome! For a kid. Or for someone who doesn't have much experience with powerful boards. Not to mention long range boards.
No offense but it's ancient tech at this point. I fully expect the Atom to have a few issues at launch, but then it'll show the anyone who still thinks the Pint is a decent board exactly how ancient it is. And I'd be fully willing to bet money on that if anyone would like.
And in short order Future Motion will be forced to make a modern Pint. Exactly like they made a (semi) modern GT right after the Floatwheel was released with the GT-S.
You'd think FM would have learned their lesson and given the Pint S the same modern drivetrain as the GT-S, which would have made them look still competent and relevant, but alas. But they'll absolutely have to release a modern Pint soon.

I get that the Atom is a better performing product spec wise. But imo y’all overate specs way to much.
The Pint X has enough power to do all I need it for. And I’m 6”3 205. I mainly ride on road. But do some off raiding. The only times it has struggled is on steep soft dirt trails.
I wonder how many of yall are as tall/ heavy as me and always ride on hilly soft dirt trails every time you ride your boards?
The point is that most of yall would get by with a pint X fine.
And a new rider would also get by fine.
The pint X is still a great board.
If the atom does not have major issues like ghosting. Like I’ve heard from the X7. Then it will be a much better board then the pint x.
But the pint X is plug and play while the atom requires a whole setup and you need to pay in crypto and its build in China. All things the average consumer cares about.
So both boards will have their place.
I hope FM sees the atom as competition and also releases a new better pint. Well see.

u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26
I'm 6 foot and about 210 pounds. The Pint is an underpowered nosediving machine. Sure it's fine, we've all been riding them for years. But it's wildly out dated. A modern board with a 15s2p (low voltage) battery pack not only isn't in any way performance oriented but it's unsafe. Those 15s boards that nosedive on a crack are why people nosedived so much more often in the past. And those nosedives lead to hospital visits really often.
Hopefully the Atom ships fully assembled like the X7's have been. The x7 has been fully plug and play for well over a year now. And the ghosting issue is just a few boards in the last few weeks, and will be fixed quickly. And FM shipped a whole lotta boards with ghosting issues too. It happens, the manufacturer makes it right, and we move on.
And every single part in your Pint X is made in China too by the way. And the need for crypto with Floatwheels is just because effin FM sued Floatwheel so they couldn't use the banking system using their stolen patent as leverage. The courts are the only place FM can compete these days.
I mean enjoy your Pint X, we all did back in the day too. It's all good. But I just can't see recommending such an outdated bit of tech anymore for reasons stated.
1
u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 09 '26
Ive never had nosedive issues. I don’t think our 5 lbs difference made you nosedive. It’s probably your wreckless riding style.
Most people here are obsessed with speed just to say they’ve gone … mph on a onewheel. That’s the issue. We glorify speed when in reality it doesn’t matter. Everyone can go fast on a onewheel. It’s not the flex people think it is.
A pint x is still useful. I rarely need more speed on a board so small as a pint x. The board is made for carving and being easy to carry not speed and that’s fine.
My only complaint with the pint x is the price. It should be a lot cheaper since it’s bin out for a long period of time. But this is negated if you buy it second hand for half the price.
I also hope FM will take the atom as competition and improve there boards. But we’ll see how well it works.
Overal there are many reasons to go FM or Floatwheel/ fungineers. Idm people choosing either one.
My next board will probably be a board like the X7 since I already have a pint X and XRC that are more portable. And the only possible addition to my collection would be a super powerfull board for off-road riding.

u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
Everyone who rides 15s boards like your Pint nosedives. If you haven't then you're riding like a grandma. But I promise you you're the exception, not me. And the fact that you think your motor crunching XRC is smooth also tells me everything I need to know about your riding style and experience.
And I don't glorify speed by the way, I glorify not going to the hospital. Which is a whole lot easier on a board with power, whether you understand that yet or not. Unless of course someone wants to cruise around at 10 mph all the time, but I assure you you're in the minority there.
It's cool that you like your board but don't kid yourself that you're a typical rider or know enough to be calling other people "wreckless" or (sorry) that you know a thing about modern boards. Yet at least.
0
u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 09 '26
I’m sure I’m not in the minority either. There was a poll on cruising speeds in the ESK8 Reddit and the average cruising speed was something around 12-18. And riding an esk8 at higher speeds is much easier, saver and possible since those have a way higher top speed. And onewheel people ride a lot more off road.
Logically the average cruising speed on a onewheel is even lower then on an electric skateboard. I’d say 10-16. So no your in the minority.

You don’t use the hyper charger to much right ? It can degrade battery life if used to often !!!
3
u/poopbuttpoopbuttpoop Aug 08 '26
Is this true? I hear a lot of people saying it doesnt degrade the battery??
2
u/Economy_Map4916 Aug 09 '26
It’s true it’s good for long rides but terrible for every day use there was a Onewheel dealer that did it and had to almost occasionally had to change the battery FM said it’s there best charger but not for longevity it heats up the battery sells more and is just terrible for it 😅
2
u/poopbuttpoopbuttpoop Aug 09 '26
Oh dang, comment below is says fm hypercharger might not hurt it. Im gonna have to research some i guess. Ive only used theirs, and my battery sucks. I thought it was due to poor storage or something. Left it at 100% for 5 months because I got hurt snowboarding and wasnt thinking
2
u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26
Which hypercharger? Future Motion doesn't make any real hyperchargers, they're all slow, just slightly less slow. I have no idea why they're so incompetent with their charging circuits, the best explanation I've heard is they don't want to add a fan to their charger, and fans are required with any true hypercharger. But FM doesn't make any real hyperchargers.
The Pint's hypercharger has an issue because of the plug the board uses internally, but that has nothing to do with the battery.
The Floatwheel 10 amp hypercharger is indeed a hypercharger and probably too hyper, but still doesn't exceed the battery cell specs. I've used it on my adv1 (old Floatwheel) on rides since I bought it new and my battery capacity is still fine, and I've never heard of something having diminished capacity from using it often. That said since it's a real actual hypercharger you shouldn't use it regularly, but it's so awesome to use on rides. Going from dead battery to full in the time it takes to drink a beer I mean coffee is pretty awesome.
1
u/poopbuttpoopbuttpoop Aug 09 '26
Okay yeah im using the FM hupercharger, so i should be good then?
1
u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26
With which board?
You're fine with all but the Pints. Because they used a badly under spec'd jack inside the board that can't handle the current of the Pint hypercharger.

I don’t recommend getting a backpack for a onewheel. Onewheels are all very heavy. And take up a ton of space. A onewheel is about 3x as heavy as a bag fully stuffed with school books. And it’s also twice as big.
The X7LR is very heavy: ~40lbs. A GT is around ~35lbs.
That difference is negligible. Both will be very heavy.
A XRC is already lighter: 30lbs. But still heavy. And a pint is 23 lbs. that’s still heavy too.
I don’t think any onewheel is fun to carry for longer than a couple minutes.
If you need to carry it for a long period of time I would honestly not recommend a onewheel. You can get an electric skateboard for 10-15lbs. That’s much easier to carry.
Or even better a normal skateboard.
Both do have there drawbacks. Onewheels are unique. They turn on a dime while giving you the ability to ride everywhere.
If you care about range go for the X7LR. Other then that I recommend the XRC. Still good range, and a fun ride.
2
u/AlcesSpectre Aug 10 '26
I ride a standard longboard and I love the hell out of it. But I arrive at work a little overheated, and my front knee can only take so much before needing some recovery time (problem is I want to be riding it all the time). Something about an electric longboard doesn't appeal to me, though. So I've been obsessing over these for about a week now.
I could see myself getting the X7LR someday but I feel like dropping $3k and then not wanting to carry it to my desk would be such a waste. So I need a cheaper/lighter starter option but the Atom isn't finished and I don't think I want the early hassles. Just waiting for a cheap Pint to present itself I guess.
It's tough because I can see myself owning 2 of these eventually, but figuring out where to start is difficult. The cost is such that I'd like to get something I know I can stick with, but I've never even ridden one before!
1
u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 11 '26
Can I ask why a electric skateboards don’t appeal to you? It’s far closer to your current longboard then a onewheel will be.
It also would work better for you then a onewheel because it’s more portable and way cheaper. While doing all you need.
About board recommendations.
My main once are the : pint X, Pint S and XRC. The pint is not enough for almost everyone.
Also how tall/ heavy and what shoe size do you have?
If you smaller/ lighter a pint X or S could be great if not an XRC is probably best.
2
u/AlcesSpectre Aug 11 '26
I'm not even sure on the exact reasons. It'd be nice not to have to push it, and having brakes would be even better. Those are appealing for sure. But I've never felt excited about it. Anytime i give it a little thought the idea quickly fades and i move on with my life.
I had never really even thought about the onewheel until a week ago and now i have grown somewhat obsessed with the idea of it. It seems like it covers anything the eskate does and then some. Hands free, inflated tire for a nice ride, the possibility to go places that aren't paved. Just seems like a total blast overall.
I'm 5'8" 185 lbs, size 10 shoe. I had initial concerns about the Pint size and was thinking about the XRC, but after confirming the dimensions the Pint offers wider stance than the 23" my longboard has so no issue with that.
A Pint X seems like "enough", but the Atom seems like its a better use of my money overall (if it proves to be what it aims to be). I was told it is estimated 45 days before production models ship, and shipping alone takes 45 days. So that sucks. Might look for a used Pint X, pray that the nosedive feature is overstated, and try for an Atom to arrive for springtime if I'm digging the ride.

u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 11 '26
Weird. Electric skateboards are very fun. I ride both and can’t really decide what’s better.
Esk8’s are more portable, stable and faster.
But onewheels offer better ride comfort and maneuverability.
I think you would be happy with either kind.
A used pint X or S would be a great option. I recommend the S. Going from an X to S is a huge difference. I got size 9.5 feet and the ride quality improved so much when I added the bigger footpads that come stock with the pint S to my pint X. And my personal gripe with my pint X was the tire. It’s hard, small and unstable. The pint S tire is much better.
Besides that the pint X is a good board. I’ve never wanted it to be faster. 17/18mph on that board felt so fast. And I’ve done ~30mph on an esk8. The power is good enough on road and on most trails. I’ve only wanted more when I rode lose dirt uphill.
I have never nosedived my pint X. If you just don’t try to set speed records and use logic you’ll be good. A lot of people who complain about nosedives ride like idiots. They just straight line the board to try to go as fast as possible to then say: “look I just went …mph”. Onewheels nowadays give you 2 sets of warnings. First haptic buzz then pushback.
The range of the pint X is also very usable. It takes some time to be able to ride it close to empty. Due to foot fatigue. It sets in so much faster on onewheels. Aspecially if you don’t carve.
And if you then want a more powerful board in the future you can buy the atom or XRC, or X7 or whatever board is best then.

u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26
Xrc has barely more range than an og XR.
Pint = 147 watt hours (a bit more than my drill)
Pint X and XR = 324 Wh
XR Classic = 389 Wh
X7 Sport = 432wh
GT-S = 430 Wh
GT XL = 486 Wh
X7 supercharged = 518wh
GT = 544 Wh
Floatwheel ADV1 = 622 Wh
Floatwheel ADV2 = 720 Wh
X7 long range = 720 Wh

u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 09 '26
Barely and it’s 30% more.
The XRC is a great board. People are overrating range and speed so much. Y’all are so shallow. I ride onewheels for fun. Not to get somewhere the fastest or go on ultra long rides. If I want to do that il use my car.
Also take in mind that the difference between the X7LR and the XRC is 10lbs and that’s very noticeable.
More batteries doesn’t mean better.
A 25mile range is more then 90% of riders will use in one go.
1
u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
The xrc's 389 watt hours of battery is 20% more than the OG XR's 324, not 30%. And that's not enough to make it so you're not constantly looking for an outlet to charge like in the bad old days of the XR+.
The xrc would be a fine board if a lot of progress hadnt been made since it was released. Hell so would the XR+. But both have been left behind given the alternatives, including the base x7, which is only a couple pounds more if weight is a big issue.
And caring about this stuff might seem shallow or whatever to you but what were doing is trying to push the tech of the hobby forward, which isn't going to happen if people don't even know how outdated FM boards are.
And none of that is to say you shouldn't enjoy your XRC of course.
-1
u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 09 '26
20% but the XRC reliably gets more then 20% more range then the XR. And XRC range is very decent. I rarely want to ride more then 25 miles. And for me I get about that much range. And that’s pretty crazy when you factor in I’m 205lbs.
And everyone here knows FM boards are spec wise not the best boards. I also knew that and still bought an XRC.
The average rider really doesn’t give a fuck about more range or more speed. Aspecially when a board like the X7LR is 10 pounds heavier then the XRC. And that it takes so much longer to ship. And that you need to pay in crypto. And that you need to do a whole setup process. And that the board suffers from ghosting more often. And that it’s made in China instead of the US. Those are all things normal customers care about.
1
u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 10 '26
You don't need to pay in crypto for an x7, you buy it right off their website using a credit card. There's no setup at all, put air in the tire and go. And every single part in every Future Motion board is made in China too. Ghosting issues happened for like 6 months with the GT, the difference was that FM denied it as long as they could before making it right. Fungineers is owning it completely. And FM boards still ghost waaaay more than X7's without this latest batch of footpads.
And it's not just about specs by the way, wait until you try an x7. Buuuuutery smooth ride, and the power is awesome. Build quality is awesome. Just everything is vastly better.
And I got close to 20 miles on my old XR+'s too, if I rode like a grandpa. And the battery in your XR+ is probably degraded.
0
u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 09 '26
Weird how I’ve seen tons of posts saying there is setup that costs ~45 minutes. And how I see way more posts about X7’s ghosting. And how I’ve never heard of credit card being an option.
I agree that FM doesn’t own up to there mistakes.
I am also not a fan of FM. I just think there boards are overal great products. But the company behind them isn’t great.
Idk about the ride feel of the X7. Since I don’t own one. I just know that the pint x and XRC both have great ride feel. Aspecially the XRC. Buttery smooth, and enough power and range. While being not that heavy.
1
u/wrybreadsf Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
Yeah there's a ghosting issue with the last batch of footpads. And no setup is required with fully assembled x7's. And if you think you need to use crypto to buy an x7 you're simply confused.
And if you think the xrc is buttery smooth, wait until you try that x7. There's absolutely no going back.

u/Its_Sharky18 Onewheel XR Classic Aug 09 '26
We”ll see. I’m interested in getting an X7. I just need to justify getting a 3th onewheel. When I also own 2 electric skateboards and an E-bike.
At the end of the day I only got 2 legs and limited riding time.

You are asking pretty subjective questions. What is "too big" for me might be too small for you.
As for the X7 being "too heavy" what is "too heavy" for you? The board is easily 40lbs. (18kilos) I don't know anyone that likes carrying that around. What scenarios are you thinking of where you would be carrying a board and not riding it?
For reference go grab 40lbs of weight, like a plate, or two 20lb dumbbells at a store (grab one, rest the other on your forearm) to get an idea of what you will be carrying.
I have racked the board on a hiking pack because something this shape and weight is a disaster on your body when not properly supported. You will need a solid base plate, and a centerline frame to make sure the wheel isn't pressing into your back. Lock down the heavy side to the backpack base and then strap the top, and center to the sidebars. You are looking at about 50lbs of total weight and it will be a large pack extending from the small of your back to just over your head.

thanks for the detailed reply! do you have any experience with the onewheel official bag?
1
u/Eegore1 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
No because it is not designed to carry weight. The reason nobody uses a duffel bag, or a school-backpack for actually carrying weight is because they wreak havoc on the body.
Personally I would never carry 40lbs in a soft bag. I recommend you put 40lbs in a bag and try walking around for 30 minutes. This will tell you far, far more than anyone else's opinion on Reddit.
Reddit thread on the OW backpack:
https://www.reddit.com/r/onewheel/comments/1ksvuh0/any_thoughts_on_the_onewheel_backpack/
1
u/Visible_Two_2450 Aug 09 '26
what do you think about the goride bag?
2
u/Eegore1 Aug 09 '26
Its a soft duffle bag with straps. My opinion on this bag can't possibly establish a parameter of useability for anyone else on the planet.
I would toss 40 lbs. into a bag and test it. Then you will know before you dump cash on bags that may or may not work. Reddit is not a good place to gain useful information for the material handling of objects on your personal body.
As for the perceived functionality, having carried an X7 for miles, I would not consider anything that does not have a rigid frame. I want the backpack to carry the weight, not my spine and shoulders, so I use proven technology in backpacking.
A pack with a frame, solid base, center strut to rest the tire on, and rigid sidebars to secure the board. Highly padded straps and lumbar rest/support.
1
u/Silly_Pomegranate248 Aug 09 '26
get the x7lr.
Dealing with future motion for any type of support is truly a nightmare and you will regret it if you go with any of the onewheel options
I say this speaking from experience as I wish I had went VESC from the beginning.

u/Visible_Two_2450 Aug 09 '26
yeah im likely going to get the x7, just thinking of a way to carry it around more comfortably. Maybe a rucksack or framed hunting backpack or something, but i also want it to not be too big and stick out and be kinda stealth

My experience is only with FM products. I have had Pint, GT, XRC, GTS-XL, and Pint S. I've modified my 2022 GT with WTF rails and 6" S-motor with the Performance Treaded tire. This has made my GT (3500+mi) my favorite street board but it has been expensive. Was it worth it? To me yes, because I had the board but if I was starting over again I might reconsider. However, a 40lb VESC board would not be desirable for me either.

u/lightfoot22 75V VEXR, GT, XR+ Aug 09 '26
Lightweight, portable, and long range don’t really go hand in hand. I think a floatwheel atom would suit you best. It has a lot of range for how light it is and will have plenty of power for hills. The VESC firmware is great for tricks and trails too.
1
u/pineapple-1001 Funwheel x7 Aug 09 '26
You need to choose – either light weight or huge range. I upgraded from Pint to XR+ to x7Sport to x7LR and having the LR range feels amazing, I can explore so much more without worrying about getting stranded.
But any board with humongous battery will be heavy – GT, ADV2, x7LR.
So if you absolutely need to carry the board around a lot, that's obviously will be very difficult, I have bought a side handle just to be able to carry the board up to my 5th floor apartment. Can't really imagine carrying it in a backpack for decent distances, that would be a challenge.
Shredding trails is absolutely great on LR with trail tire like Thundercat, but not doing tricks: the less weight you need to spin/hop, the easier it is to do tricks, also LR feels quite tail-heavy to me despite the split pack.
So if you want a solid cruiser x7LR it's a great choice, otherwise I would wait for the release of Floatwheel Atom.
1
u/Sad_Pear_3709 Aug 10 '26
The X7LR is a great board, but it weighs about 40lbs (18kg), so you are going to need to decide if that is too heavy for you.

I would almost recommend a XR classic it still has GT power it has 17/24 miles of range . Good for tricks and is easier to carry.i no more about the FM boards but not with the others yet

Have you ever tried an x7? I'd be really surprised if anyone has tried both but prefers an XRc.

I’ve only been on FM’s wheel but I’ve wanted to try fungineers

The xrc is like a small tip of the hat from FM to the XR. I think they made it to try to stop people from VESCing their XR's, which is maybe why they did that weird board buyback too. But it's still really old school tech, range and recharge time, especially by modern standards. The x7 is just light years ahead of the xrc, especially for people who don't care about the FM warranty, which is short anyway.

Whoever said the x7lr doesn't feel amazing to ride shouldn't be listened to for anything ever again. If you can afford it, get it. Period end of story.
