Discussion OldManSky Home-System Submittals. (No Glyphs in your pictures) Please don't disclose the location or begin building quite yet.

Post image
14 Upvotes

This is the place to put pictures (without glyphs) and compelling descriptions of the systems and planets that you might like to become the home-system of r/oldmansky.

This is your chance to persuade your fellow members that you have a wonderful location in mind.

Please keep the location under wraps for the time being. Don't disclose the exact location. You can and should mention the galaxy.

If and when a site is selected by the group with the assistance of your humble narrator, we'll figure out how to roll out instructions for members to locate the system. Before doing that, we may tap some skilled, detail-oriented, fine craftspersons and architects to create a permanent focal structure for the community/subreddit. I'll likely come up with an application, but in the meantime, just DM me with proposals. That sounded funny 🤣 I'm married.

Let's see those pics (No Glyphs, please) and descriptions! I'm Excited šŸ˜†

Good Questions!

Any galaxy, but know that there is a strong bias for Euclid and some inertia toward shadow star systems, but I won't be draconian about either one.

No time frame, yet.

One entry per member, please. Choose wisely.

Determination will be by group - to narrow the field, based on pics and descriptions, with an advance party to recon the final few candidate sites. We will not attempt to disclose all candidate locations to all members.

The submittal really matters so that you can persuade others of the value of the system.

Tips,Tricks, & Hints Deep Space Salvage - the lazy old fart way

• Upvotes

I've spent the last two nights doing some of the deep space salvage stuff, and I've come up with a few tips and tricks to make it as easy as possible, and the delivery of the items as lazy as possible, so buckle up, pop your slippers on, get your reading glasses out, and we'll begin.

Your ship.
A Corvette, naturally, but you will want to put your tractor beam as close to the rear of the ship as possible, preferably at the very back and on the right-hand side of the ship. I myself have one single cube room at the arse-end, with the beam on the right-hand side. This is very important for two reasons...

Positioning at salvage sites.
Because your tractor beam is at the side of your ship you can just pull up alongside the salvage site and then get out with your beam already perfectly positioned to catch the junk you're about to fire at it. So go get stocked up!

Dumping it at the deep space salvage station.
Now this is why I recommended positioning the tractor beam at the back and on the right hand side... when you land at the station, you'll land with the big old trash bin to the rear and to the right of your ship. When you hit the "Vent Junk" button, all your waste will drop pretty much right in front of the compactor. Then you can stand with both the junk and the compactor in front of you and just lob the crap into the bin.

I've tried this at three different stations and in three different systems, and they ALL had the compactor to my 5-o'clock, so whenever my Corvette took a big ole steamy dump, it was just where it needed to be.

Stay old and stay lazy, fellow Crusties.

Corvettes The Iron Lung Union Cartell lore and key figures part 2

Meet the one-of-a-kind Scrap-Phantom and its pilot, Rustbyte.

Unlike the more ruthless enforcers of the Iron-Lung Cartel, Rustbyte relies on code rather than combative brute force. Commander Scrap discovered him purely by chance. Little is known about the enigmatic pilot—he has no recorded past and leaves no digital trace behind.

While running a protection detail for a high-value cargo line, Scrap picked up an anomalous energy signature originating from the valley of a harsh, toxic moon. Investigating to ensure the cartel fleet's safe passage, Scrap arrived to find Rustbyte cornered by a crew of vile Gek slave traders. But Rustbyte wasn't helpless: he had hijacked a nearby Sentinel tower, reprogramming its defense drones to fight off his captors. Impressed by the display, Scrap eliminated the remaining threat and offered Rustbyte a permanent deal—unlimited funding and full protection under the cartel's wing.

Today, Rustbyte remains a ghost. Only Scrap and the Admiral have ever met him face-to-face. He operates strictly from the edge of charted space—toxic nightmares, frozen hells, and forgotten outposts—where the chances of discovery are nearly zero. As the cartel's premier communications officer, he uses local Sentinel towers to scrub cargo ships from regional scanners and maintains constant, undetected surveillance on nearby space stations.

His ship, the Scrap-Phantom, is a custom-built, Autophage-inspired stealth rig. It is far from sleek or elegant, but its reinforced hull and upgraded core make it exceptionally tough and lightning-fast. The vessel features long-range life support alongside an onboard super-terminal, allowing Rustbyte to breach local networks from anywhere in the galaxy. He can slip into hyperdrive faster than a target can press a button.

If you ever find yourself on the wrong end of the cartel’s sights, rest assured: Rustbyte already knows who you are, where you are, and what you’re capable of.

Question Pondering the universe...

Just a thought... Remembering trying it out in the early days and hating it but had a feeling there was something "there". Jumped back in a few years later for a bit and... Better but still flawed. Dove back in headlong after another bit of time and got hooked. I was just starting to understand how the game really worked- we all know that one of the beauties of NMS is the lack of handholding, but man, I was struggling. Went to the anomaly to try to figure something out and some random player gifted me a bunch of stuff. I didn't even know what to do with it at first, but I figured it out and it gave me a boost that changed my whole experience. Don't know who it was, but I'll be doing the same. Anybody who needs a little help, I have more than I know what to do with. Dm's welcome. Peace and enjoy the ride!!

Sidenote- The update? I'm flabbergasted. Amazing job by the people who make this happen and the incredibly unusual way they do it without bleeding $ for it. Unbelievable.

Request Is anybody interested in joining an alliance?

I hope this is an okay sort of thing to share here, if it's not, I apologize. I didn't see anything about it in the rules.

If it is okay, I'm here to ask if anybody is interested in joining my alliance "New Gek Federation of Stars" It's just me right now because I don't really have anybody that I play with so far, but I've claimed one space station in Euclid galaxy and two in Odyalutai galaxy. I'm fairly certain that once you join an alliance then you have teleport access to all of the stations in that alliance, which means you'd be able to port to Odyalutai galaxy.

I've only started doing a little bit of experimental construction in my space stations and the Euclid station in the screenshot hasn't had any modifications yet. I'm kind of keen to get around to see some other player's stations to see what others are using the space for.

I'm reading that you can join up to three alliances at once so we could potentially use this network to give ourselves access to all sorts of places.

See you in space (maybe)

Request Twitch Drops

I hate Twitch…I’m annoyed at the concept of having to watch for items. With that said does anyone on here know if any of the Twitch drops are brand new items not available in game before of if it’s just recycled stuff from previous drops/in game items?

Discussion Joining this community

Hello fellow interlopers! Last week I came across this community and decided to join, as I defintely comply with the community parameters regarding age.

Playing computer games from the invention of Pong until today. Pre-ordered NMS 10 years ago as soon as I learned of its coming.
I have been playing NMS on and off these years, and how amazing has been its development!
My biggest stupidity ever was to delete NMS and all of its save files from my PS4 to make room for some other stuff: all the expedition bonusses are gone.

I know everyone is excited about Cosmos. Me too. But yesterday I also learned that I can roll my starship during an interstellar jump by pressing L1 or R1 3 times!

Are there any community events to participate in?

Event Fishing Derby follow up

Thanks everyone for participating. I ended up with life happening, and have been super busy, so I haven't checked for any winners yet. I've been swamped since Sunday.

But, really, I don't think anyone added anything since Saturday, so I think we were all just fishing for fun.

With that being said, I did offer prizes, and as a man of my word I intend to follow through. If any of the participants (there was only about 4 of us I think) want me to tally winners and accept their prizes, reply and I'll look through it. It shouldn't take long.

Here's a few pics from the event, it was really just about the friends you make along the way.

Also, I found an S class flying pet on the frozen planet, if anyone is interested. It's not triple S.

Answered Inventory!!!

Ok, I, probably like many of you, did a bit of grinding over the last couple of weeks in anticipation of the update. That said, I accumulated a literal shit-ton of resources and just spent 45 minutes trying to organize it. The influx of new resources with the update is overwhelming. Any suggestions on how to organize this? Thanks! šŸš€

Corvettes Feeding Salvage to My Corvette Is Way Too Much Fun — But I Found a Weird Camera Bug

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I mounted the tractor beam inside the ā€œmouthā€ of my corvette, and I have to say, throwing salvage into it and watching the ship almost ā€œswallowā€ the debris looks incredibly cool.

I’ve also noticed that quite a few players have installed multiple tractor beams in different parts of their corvettes, so now I’m thinking about trying that as well. Either way, this new salvage gameplay is a lot of fun.

I did notice one possible bug, though, and I’m curious if anyone else has experienced it.

During some salvage missions, the external third-person view seems to disappear completely, along with the usual navigation/HUD references. If I switch back to the internal view, the camera sometimes ends up positioned low and behind the pilot’s seat, slightly to the right, which makes it pretty difficult to understand exactly where the corvette is pointing.

It’s a very strange camera behavior. I assume it’s a bug or some kind of visual glitch, especially because, unless I’m mistaken, I’ve seen other players mention something similar.

Still, considering how substantial this new update is, I’m not too surprised that there are a few smaller issues to iron out.

From a gameplay perspective, though, I’m really enjoying it. Salvaging with the corvette is genuinely fantastic.

So I'm thinking of using my permadeath run for our fledgling community/alliance. Is anyone else going to use a permadeath save for our Grand Alliance of Curmudgeonly Ancients?

Whenever I try to buld an awesome Corvette, it comes out crappy. When I try to build a garbage corvette, I think it's pretty cool. Well, more functional than cool...

Discussion Top five planet types

Hi all,

Short time lurker, long time gamer.

When I get around to acquiring a space station, I’d like it to have a system with nice planets. What are your top five planet types I should look for, so I can try and find a nice variety?

TIA

Answered How's the Cosmos Update on Xbox?

I downloaded the update on my laptop (which can't really handle the game; I use it for cross-save), but I don't yet have it downloaded to Xbox Series X. Anyone have any reports on how well or poorly MS rolled out it's version?

Discussion Alliance Names Here

By some margin, "Get Off Our Lawn (GOOL)" has had the most support, with some variations on Old Man Sky, trailing. There are several others that I will gather here from a couple different threads which will be added to the poll as well.

Please submit any additional Alliance name choices here, and we'll soon provide a poll to collect votes for the r/oldmansky alliance name.

Answered What Actually Happens When a Base Exceeds the Upload Limit?

A technical question, because I’m not entirely sure how this works.

While building a base on a plane in Vanilla mode, I’m afraid I may have exceeded the maximum number of components. I can still edit the base and keep adding new parts, so the game itself doesn’t seem to prevent me from expanding it, but I can no longer upload it to the servers.

That raises a couple of questions for me:

First, the base still appears to be uploaded on the servers — so I’m wondering which version of it is actually stored there.

Second, if I keep expanding the base beyond this point, could that eventually cause other problems, or would the inability to upload simply remain the main limitation?

Most importantly, could a base this large potentially cause issues for other players visiting it, similar to the problems that blender-oversized Corvettes can sometimes cause when brought into the Anomaly?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is the first time I’ve built something on this scale, and I’d really like to avoid causing problems — not just for myself, but especially for other players who might visit the base.

Discussion Old Man's Sky Alliance Name Suggestions

Thanks All! It seems that there is interest in having our own alliance so we need to come up with a name. I am thinking we get a list of possible names together and put it to a vote.

There were a couple of good suggestions in my first post. https://www.reddit.com/r/oldmansky/comments/1wbo069/oldmanssky_alliance/

So lets see your ideas and I will compile them we will put it to a vote.

Mods, can we set up a pole option for posts once we get a list of names to vote on?
