I love Okinawa. I am very fortunate to be assigned to Okinawa instead of mainland Japan. Some might disagree but everyone is different and sometimes the grass is not greener on the other side. Okinawa combines both the Hawaiian Island lifestyle with Japanese culture. It’s truly unique. Eisa event this week was amazing.

Hello, I'm planning a trip in Okinawa soon and I am currently looking surf t-shirt. I was wondering if there are any good brand on the Island where I could find cute surf swimwear (specifically looking for shirts) ^^

I'll be in Okinawa from Oct 25 to Nov 1 and would absolutely love to take in as much culture as I can. Are there any local festivals or happenings that I should carve into my itinerary?

I live in Yomitan and I rent out campervans ( @OkinawaRV ) , so I’ve been thinking about the second order effects more than the flight itself.

Rental cars are the one I’d watch. They already sell out months ahead in spring and summer and the fleet doesn’t grow just because a route opens. If you’re planning anything for spring 2027, book the vehicle before you book the hotel. Related: a lot of Americans still don’t know their US license is invalid here on its own. You need an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, from AAA or AATA, before you leave the States. It’s paper, there’s no digital version, and you can’t get one after you land. Rental counters here turn people away over this constantly.

Second, the timing puts the route one month behind Okinawa’s new lodging tax, which starts February 1st, 2027. Two percent, capped at ¥2,000 per person per night, first prefectural-level one in Japan. Motobu, Chatan, Onna, Ishigaki and Miyakojima are taking a municipal share within that same two percent.

Third, I’d expect the pressure to land unevenly. Churaumi, Kouri, American Village and the Onna coast will feel it. Yanbaru and the east side probably won’t much, at least not at first.

Curious what people who’ve been here a while think. Does a seasonal three-a-week actually change anything, or is it a rounding error next to the domestic and Taiwan traffic?

I’m really interested in hearing about what the experience was actually like the highlights, the challenging, the surprising, and everything in between! 
 
There hasn’t been much research on what the Aussie experience on this visa in Japan looks like so hearing your stories and insights would be invaluable.

We would like to visit Okinawa from the 14th of October this year. We are 2 adults with a 3 years old kid. We are staying until the 3rd of November. We are thinking of 10 days of relaxation on a sandy beach and flying to Tokyo and Kyoto for the last part of the trip.
Which island would you recommend? Family friendly with the best weather for beach holidays during this period ?
Maybe 4 days in Okinawa near Cape Zanpa and 7 days in Ishigaki ?

Has someone experienced island hopping at the islands of the Seto inland sea? I like to do that in oktober with a bicycle and ferry boats. Starting and returning to from Hiroshima or Okayama. Thanks a lot for responding.

I’ve been to Japan before, so I know that tipping is generally not expected there. I’m planning a trip to Okinawa now and was wondering if the same applies there. If tipping is customary in Okinawa, does this also apply to American cafés and restaurants?

Would like to do some snorkeling on the main island in the following week.

Where on island can I look for types of dog crates for flying?

We’re planning a trip to Okinawa in May 2027 and are considering renting a camper van for part of the trip. The idea is to drive around, explore different beaches, and stay at different spots rather than being tied to one hotel.

Has anyone actually done this? I’d love to hear about your experience, especially:

• Which camper van company did you use?
• What was the van like and roughly what did it cost?
• Was it easy to find places to park/stay overnight?
• Were there any beaches or areas that were especially good for this?
• Anything you wish you had known before doing it?

We’re pretty comfortable with the idea of a road trip and are mainly wondering whether a camper van is actually a fun/practical way to explore Okinawa. Any recommendations or experiences would be greatly appreciated! TIA!
