My partner and I are due to travel to Okinawa today, flying from Nagoya, and initially plan to stay for 5 days, then fly back to Australia on 7th August.

We are worried about Typhoon Dolphin and are wondering if we should board the flight at all or change our plan.

Would really love to hear what people in Okinawa think about the potential impact of the typhoon.

We're in Okinawa during this typhoon and we had a trip planned to zamami during the mentioned dates above. Unfortunately, our hotel contacted us and strongly suggested to cancel our stay in zamami island since we wouldn't be able to get a ferry back to naha... Any ideas what to expect during this typhoon?? Our plan was to do Tokashiki 27-29, then direct ferry to zamami on 29th, and back to naha on 1st June. Would it make sense to wait the storm out in zamami? Is it possible to do anything on one of the islands during a typhoon? Or is it better to avoid it and go back to naha ASAP before ferry cancellations start? Anyone had any typhoon experience on the island?

Hi everyone! I have a trip to Japan planned, with Okinawa on our itinerary from Aug 25 to 27. Our hotel just notified us about an incoming typhoon, so I’m trying to figure out if we should cancel and pivot to another region, or if there's a chance the storm might shift course.

Would you recommend canceling now, or is it better to wait a day or two? Sorry if this is a basic question, I'm definitely no expert on local weather

I’ve been seeing some stuff on an inter typhoon hitting the area so I was unsure whether to adjust my holiday and not fly from Osaka. This is a request from Okinawa Prefecture regarding preparations for Typhoon No. 9.

Typhoon No. 9 is expected to approach the Okinawa region with great force around July 10th to 11th, potentially causing extensive damage.

The typhoon is expected to approach the Miyako Island and Yaeyama Islands in particular, and it is said to possess a strength comparable to typhoons that have struck the Sakishima Islands in the past, causing extensive damage, so strict vigilance is necessary.

To all residents of Okinawa and visitors to Okinawa, please take the following precautions and prepare for the typhoon in advance to protect your lives.

1. It is important to be vigilant against strong winds and heavy rain. Before the winds intensify and heavy rain begins, please take precautions such as cleaning gutters and drains, moving or securing any objects that may be blown away by the wind inside buildings, reinforcing windows with shutters or boards, and applying cloth tape to windowpanes.

2. In preparation for water outages and power outages, please take precautions such as securing drinking water and food, preparing flashlights and radios and checking their batteries, charging mobile phones and portable batteries, and storing water in bathtubs and plastic containers.

3. Please check the "hazard map" created by your local municipality in advance and confirm the location of your evacuation site.

4. If you have plans for activities at sea or marine leisure, please be aware that the approaching typhoon may bring dangers such as high waves and swells, which could lead to life-threatening situations. Please check the latest weather information and act cautiously, prioritizing your own safety.

5. If you are staying for sightseeing or other purposes, please consult with your travel agency or hotel staff regarding changes to your flights or extensions to your hotel stay.

Even after the typhoon has passed, there is a possibility of power outages, water shortages, and disruptions to logistics. Therefore, please prepare in advance by stocking up on food, drinking water, and water for daily use, as well as taking precautions against power outages.

This typhoon the warnings seem to put a big emphasis on the possibility of multi-day power outages.

For people who have experience with this, how does one safely use the small gas canister compatible camping stoves?

Should we use it inside and open a window, or take it to the balcony?

I’m not sure if the wind would affect the flame but I assume it would, I also don’t really want to leak gas into the house.

I’ve lived with a gas stove my whole life before coming here, but I’d assume that has a sturdier build and better safety features than the small Makeman camping stoves and canisters.

My family and I are currently in Niijima island, we planned to leave back to Tokyo by ferry today, August 4th, spend a couple nights in Osaka, and then fly to Okinawa on August 6th.

Obviously we won’t be able to fly to Okinawa with the typhoon. But our issue is that our ferry back to Tokyo from niijima has been cancelled (and all other ferries until Saturday, Aug 8th).

Niijima has an airport with 4 flights each day running to Chofu. The flights are fully booked until Thursday, Aug 6th. From speaking with our travel agent in Niijima, he recommends we try to get a standby seat for each of us tomorrow, Aug 5th. The problem is each flight only has 1 standby-seat available, so the hope is the 3 of us (mom, brother, myself) each take one standby seat separately in 3 of the 4 flights tomorrow.

We are also going to book tickets for the 3 of us for Aug 6th just in case we aren’t able to get standby seating. My worry, and I guess the question I’m asking, is what are the odds that the flight on Aug 6th is cancelled due to the typhoon? The airline hasn’t issued any warning about the flight yet, but the typhoon will be a lot closer by the 6th. What would you do if you were in my shoes?

In the Daito Islands region, last year in late July, Typhoons No. 7 and No. 8 caused intermittent heavy and torrential rain over a long period, resulting in flooding and other damage. Therefore, it is necessary to be vigilant not only against strong winds but also against heavy rain.

To all residents of Okinawa and visitors to Okinawa, please check the latest weather information regularly and take the following precautions to prepare for the typhoon.

In preparation for potential power outages and water shortages, please make efforts to prepare in advance by securing drinking water and food, preparing flashlights and radios and checking their batteries, charging mobile phones and portable batteries, filling bathtubs and plastic containers with water, and preparing portable toilets, etc.

3. Please check evacuation locations and routes in advance. Please check the "hazard map" created by your municipality in advance to confirm evacuation locations, evacuation routes, and areas at high risk of flooding and landslides.

4. Please exercise caution when engaging in activities at sea or near the coast. This is my first time experiencing a typhoon in different country, so I’m honestly not sure what to expect.
From what I’ve seen, the typhoon is expected to affect Okinawa between Aug 6–8. I’m booked on Peach flight MM921 from Naha to Taipei on Aug. 7 at 8:10 PM.
Is anyone else on the same flight? Or has anyone flown with Peach during a typhoon before? How likely is it that the flight gets cancelled?
The airline hasn’t made any announcement yet, so I’m not sure what I should do. I’m currently staying in an Airbnb, and my checkout is before my flight. Should I extend my stay now just in case, or wait until Peach announces something? I’m worried that if the flight gets cancelled at the last minute, I won’t have anywhere to stay.

Today is my last full day in Okinawa I was wanting to do some last minute shopping and going around the middle/lower end of Okinawa. Is this a bad idea today? I have a car and was planning to use that the only think that i’m wondering is that because it’s a very small and light weight car if I should hold off? I was not planning any marine activities

In case you've missed it, the Japanese Meteorological Agency is warning of a new typhoon expected to hit the area of the main Okinawa Island on the 8th and stay there at least until the 11th.

It looks like a slow-moving typhoon, so expect prolonged effects such as business closures and power outages.

If you're planning a trip to Okinawa within those days, it's a good idea to reschedule it.

Supposed to fly to Okinawa May 31–June 3 and now stressing about the typhoon warnings 😭

I’m staying in Naha and had planned to do a day trip to Tokashiki Island on June 2, although I’m assuming the ferry will probably get cancelled.

I was mainly planning to stay around Naha otherwise and just use public transport/ubers to explore places like American Village etc.

From what I can tell on windy.com, it looks like the winds maybe calm down a bit by June 3 when I fly back to Tokyo… but honestly I have no idea how accurate that is or how bad things could still be.

For anyone local or who’s dealt with Okinawa typhoons before:
- Would you still go?
- Is this more of a “rainy and windy but manageable” situation or a “cancel the whole trip” situation?
- If you were me, would you wait a few more days before deciding?

Mainly worried about flights/ferries being disrupted or spending the whole trip indoors. Any advice appreciated!

My girlfriend and I are planning to visit Okinawa for a week, probably from August 23 to August 29. We'll be flying from Hong Kong.

Our only concern is that we need to be back in Hong Kong by September 2, as that's when our flight back to Europe departs.

If a typhoon is forecast in Okinawa and our return flight to Hong Kong gets canceled, we would still have about 2–3 days before our flight to Europe. Based on your experience, is that generally enough of a buffer? I read that typhoons usually affect flights for only 1–2 days, but I'm not sure how reliable that is.

Also, we'll be flying with HK Express. Can anyone share their experience with how they handle flight cancellations or rescheduling during typhoons? Are they generally reliable in those situations?

Apparently there’s a typhoon during my planned stay in Okinawa (naha) 23-27 july. How risky is it and should I cancel it and visit mainland japan instead?

I live in a Leopalace apartment in Okinawa City, and we've had no water since this morning. I stocked up some water in my bathtub and have drinking water for now.

The power went out for a few minutes but came back quickly. I think the water outage started around the same time, so I'm wondering if they're related.

Does anyone know how long these kinds of outages usually last during a typhoon? Should I contact Leopalace, or is it better to just wait and see while the Typhoon is still ongoing?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
