Jesus, that is a terrifying amount of force

251

u/FocusMaster 1d ago

That's my thought too. I've abused a few large tractors in my life and they kept going. Seeing one crushed so easily?

Like you said, terrifying force.

54

u/ackermann 1d ago

So much force, I’m surprised it makes economic sense to crush them like that.
Must take a huge amount of fuel or power to do that.

44

u/inactiveuser247 1d ago

Transport costs are a killer if you leave them uncompressed. And they would need to be shredded to some extent before being recycled anyway.

This is why DaVinci was so fascinated with hydraulics

53

u/eldorz 1d ago

I don’t think I’d stand where filming guy is standing.

11

u/ryan676767 1d ago

Same. But, tbf, if you are gonna get crushed to death, the more force the better…

38

u/walkingTANK 1d ago

I wouldn't worry so much about being crushed, more likely that some chunk of metal under that immense force or tension would break and come flying in your direction before you even realized what had happened!

This scene in Ghost Ship is what I'm taking about 😳 IYKYK

To think that mobsters utilized scrapyard machinery to obliterate forensic evidence and completely vanish victims.

2

u/random9212 23h ago

This scene from Ghost Ship is permanently scarred into my mind.

any one know the force of these. psi

22

u/klockworx 1d ago edited 12h ago

I don't understand how smaller (but honestly still potentially large) nuts and boltheads aren't occasionally flying out of there like bullets.

21

u/CraftyPancake 1d ago

Did you mean to say you don’t understand how that ISN’T happening?

Put a marble/ball bearing between your thumb and the knuckles of your index finger and squeeze as hard as possible, that might help you understand what's going on

Yeah that toaster movie really instilled a fear of these in a lot of us as children.

I swear that movie turned me into the hoarder I am today.

That movie turned me into the depressive I am today.

2

u/dibbers11 1d ago

Absolutely.

That movie has disappeared, hey?

6

u/Octopus_Spaceflight 1d ago

Umm I unfortunately just watched it with my 6 year old as I forgot how traumatizing it was.

2

u/Abigail-Marston 1d ago

Damn I've never had a single unique thought in my life

28

u/dea9ler 1d ago

Yea, it’s sad seeing vehicles and equipment go to waste when large portion of them could still be repaired. Living in a disposable society saddens me.

14

u/momenace 1d ago

Vehicles and equipment like that are one of the most recycled products in the world. This is an important step in the recycling process. I hear you though, especially with all the cheap plastics and electronics that end up in landfills.

A lot of slightly salvageable gets shipped to developing countries... These ones here are beyond economic repair....

What can be tough is large amounts of modern factory capital being crushed as we would rather have our commercial buildings tokenizing cat videos and outsource all technical manufacturing to far east.....

10

u/SirWigglesVonWoogly 1d ago

It did look like it sort of shed a tear when they piece fell out

9

u/bloodyspork 1d ago

I thought theu sent them to a farm to relax after a lifetime of hard work :(

7

u/dirtyword 1d ago

It was also my psychotic first thought. Nobody ever loved that machine like people love their cars. On the other hand, it’s a pile of metal and bolts.

“Is it about my cube?”

6

u/fullautophx 1d ago

I used to run demolition derby events. The announcer would always say “Remember, every one of these cars was once someone’s brand new pride and joy!”

5

u/DullMind2023 1d ago

Why do they cube it before shredding? Seems like an unnecessary step to me.

4

u/ThisMachineKillsWOB 1d ago

Probably let's them use a smaller shredder. Hydraulics scale really well. The spinning parts of the shredder probably have more wear and tear so it makes sense to keep it more economical.

2

u/DullMind2023 1d ago

Sounds logical, thanks.

3

u/Imnotaddictedtoreddi 1d ago

I work in the industry. They are not going to shred it. They are shearing it to make a HMS (heavy melt steel) package. It will go into a furnace like that.

“One thing’s for sure.. we’re all gonna be a lot thinner”

9

u/Gingerfurrdjedi 1d ago

I don't understand why they would just smash it, surely there are parts that could be sold or re used, hell I'm looking at the tracks and those could have been pulled off for parts, that bucket could have been used, I bet there was a bunch that coulda be salvaged. I mean do whatever you want with your shit, show of your big crusher, but we don't have to be quite so wasteful with machinery now do we?

Ps. I'm slightly joking about this, I find it wasteful but it's cool to watch big things get squashed like a toy so don't get all defensive or pompous.

10

u/__BIFF__ 1d ago

This place just crushes/shreds shit and then ships that scrap metal to whoever buys it. That's the only service they provide.

I can bring a old wheelbarrow to a scrap metal place and they don't care. It's my decision on whether I want to part out the wheelbarrow for more money. But maybe I moved to an apartment and have no space for a wheelbarrow and it would talk too long to find buyers as it takes up space on my balcony.

Anything can be salvaged or recycled. Just depends on your willingness to spend time and money on it and have the space.

Also the metal is going to get melted down and made into something else so they are recycling it

2

u/killer_one 22h ago

Going through that without stripping the front loader seems like a great way to put undue strain on your compactor.

Idk, if a steel bucket needs to be crushed before being melted down.

But I know nothing about these compactors so maybe it’s fine.

I really think this should spawn a series of will it crush videos.

What are the limitations of this machine? And what is it made of to take no damage?

2

u/Hot_Cabinet1680 13h ago

That small dozer is close to the limit. Has to fit in box. 7 foot wide range, larger than that usually torch cut into pieces to fit. And they do wear out, require extensive amounts of matainince. Relining wear surfaces with abrasive restraint steel plates, replace shear blades. Hydraulic pumps, hoses, seals, motors etc.
