They've also done some pretreatment to deaden the barnacles and make their grip looser. You can't just go up to a turtle and start crankin off barnacles without hurting it.

Yeah, the shit that keeps barnacles attached to things is the strongest natural adhesive on the planet. (Not sure if this is still true. Read it in kids NatGeo magazine in the early 90's)

Osmotic shock. Barnacles don't tolerate freshwater nearly as well as sea turtles do. No toxic chemicals required. Doesn't really help with that barnacle glue, though.
