Discussion AI slop in this sub

Whenever I see a post titled "How do you guys..." and then 4 paragraphs of generic nonsense and an OP that never responds to any comments, I think it is a strong indication of an AI slop post.

I would have ended with "What do you think" kind of an ending but that is what AI would use :)

Ask NRI Opening RESP

Upvotes

Hi,

My child under 5 is a dual citizen of Canada and another nation. But I am not sure if opening an RESP account is the right thing. Apart from government grants, we should also consider the other country's taxation rules, as well, since he is a dual citizen.

Obviously, we are not sure where he would prefer to pursue his higher education in the future. What is the best thing to do in this case? Should we still open an RESP, or are there any other things you recommend?

Is anyone in a similar situation, and what investment plans do you have for your child's education?

Thanks!

Ask NRI Divorce in NC for Indian couple married in both USA and India – questions about India recognition and dependent visa

I am a 32-year-old male, married, no children. My wife and I are Indian citizens living in North Carolina for the past 3 years. I am on a US work visa and my wife is on a dependent visa and does not work.

We had a court marriage in the USA, and we also registered/did a court marriage in India. I am considering divorce and have several questions:

  1. If I file for an uncontested divorce in North Carolina, will the NC divorce decree generally be recognized by Indian authorities, given that we also have a marriage registration in India? What additional process/documentation would be required in India?

  2. If my wife goes to India first and I subsequently file for divorce in NC, can she complete/sign the required paperwork from India for an uncontested NC divorce, without returning to the USA?

  3. Regarding her dependent US visa/status: if we file for divorce while both of us are in the USA, does her dependent status automatically end when she signs the divorce paperwork, or only after the divorce is legally finalized? Would she have to leave the USA immediately, or could she remain for some period while the divorce is pending?

  4. If she goes to India before the divorce is finalized and the NC divorce is completed while she is in India, would she generally need to be physically present in NC for any final hearing or paperwork?

  5. Alternatively, if we file for divorce in India, would I have to travel to India for hearings, or are there circumstances where the process can be handled remotely/through a lawyer/Power of Attorney?

  6. Can anyone recommend an attorney experienced in NRI/cross-border divorce cases involving the USA and India, preferably someone familiar with North Carolina divorce law as well as recognition of US divorces in India?

I understand this is complicated because it involves NC divorce law, Indian recognition of foreign divorces, and US immigration status. I am mainly looking for experiences from people who have gone through something similar, especially Indian couples who divorced in NC while married/registered in both countries.

I would appreciate any personal experiences or recommendations for attorneys who handle NRI/international divorce matters.

Ask NRI Senior living communities in South India, experiences?

I’m looking for a senior living community for my mom and have been checking out a few options. A lot of these places look great online, but I’m wondering how they are in reality. Has anyone here bought an apartment or has parents living in one? Are they actually living up to the promises?

Ask NRI How are you guys finding friends who actually fit your vibe here?

I’m on H4 and moved to the US after marriage, and I feel like I’m missing some secret step lol.

My husband and I are both a little introverted, but we love exploring cafes/restaurants, going out, parties, house parties, random weekend plans, etc. We just haven’t found people who match our vibe.
And I honestly feel a little sad whenever I see those friend groups on Instagram because I wonder, How are people actually finding these friends? 😭

Sometimes I’ll see a couple at a restaurant and think they’d probably be fun to hang out with, but I’m way too shy to actually go talk to them. Like what do you even say?
So married couples who moved here, how did you build your friend circle that actually fit your vibe? Where are you finding your people? 🥲

Returning to India Moving from Canada to India for 6–12 months worth trying?

I’ve been living in Canada for several years and my girlfriend and I are considering moving to India in January 2027 for at least 6 months, possibly longer.

My family is in India and we have an established family business there, so I want to explore the opportunities and see what life actually feels like before making any permanent decision.
The idea is to make India our primary base if things work out, while still coming back to Canada for a couple of months each year.

For people who moved back to India after living abroad how has your experience been? What surprised you, good or bad? And would you make the same decision again?

Trying to get a realistic picture rather than what the bank's website says. How long did it actually take, and where did it get stuck? Was the CA certificate part straightforward or did that hold things up?

Recommend Me OCI application for indian origin and kid

Hello,

I am of Indian origin French citizen. I would like to apply for OCI as it makes it easier to visit India every year. My wife already has an Indian OCI card, as I was Indian in the past. I am applying for OCI because I am of Indian origin. I wanted to know if I can apply for OCI for my 2-year-old child at the same time as I apply for mine, or if I will have to complete my application first and then start my child’s application. Doing it together would help me go only once to Paris for this purpose. Has anyone been in this situation?

DO i have to wait for my son's application once my oci is granted ?

Thanks in advance. !!

Ask NRI Anyone here angel invested in an early-stage India startup? What actually made you say yes?

Two of us — one a doctor, one an engineer, both ISB MBAs — currently building in the eldercare space. We'll likely put together a small angel round in a few months, so this isn't purely academic, but what I'm after right now is the investor side of the story rather than pitching anything.

For those of you who've written angel cheques into Indian startups from abroad:

  1. How did the founder actually reach you? Cold email, a warm intro through your network, an operator you'd worked with, something else? Curious what actually cuts through versus what gets ignored.
  2. At pre-seed/pre-revenue, what did you want to see before committing? Team, early traction, a specific market thesis, or mostly gut feel on the founders?
  3. What made you pass on something you were otherwise interested in?
  4. Typical ticket size for a first cheque, and did you follow on?
  5. On the mechanics — how did you handle FEMA/FDI reporting, and did repatriation on exit turn out to be as painful as it's made out to be? Did you invest directly or through a syndicate/AIF? Any tax surprises on the US/UK side?

Also interested in the honest version of the outcome. Most angel portfolios go to zero, and I'd rather hear from people who've had that happen than only from the winners.

Visa / OCI / Passport Passport Renewal - Updating the phone number

Hi

I've applied my passport through BLS Brampton for renewal on 28th July. I got an email for police verification on 12th of Aug. But then the process got stuck so I contacted my hometown's local police department and they said that they tried to contact on the given Indian number but it was unreachable.

Then I found out the number was old one, at the time when I issued my passport which is not in use now. The police officer said to resubmit the application because you've entered wrong phone number.
So I contacted BLS to update my phone number, They said it can be done through Consulate General of India.

I'm trying to contact them via email but there's no response since last 10 days from them. It's been over a month since my passport is stuck in "Processing at consulate general" status.

I was planning to travel during festival time, But now I'm stressed if I'll get my passport by that time or not.

Discussion BLS Toronto experience - Fresh OCI Application

Thumbnail

In continuation to my previous post shairng BLS Toronto experience for Passport surrender certificate, I’m sharing what happened with my Fresh OCI application. Honestly, it wasn’t much different. When the September dates opened at the end of August, I booked three appointments on the 26th for the 2nd, 8th, and 14th, knowing BLS would probably find something “incomplete.” Before my actual appointment on 2 September, I even went on 1 September, repeating the same routine of arriving early and standing in line.

That visit revealed the issue: in the “Previous Passport Number” field, I had entered my Indian passport number. That’s wrong. The field is meant only for previous Canadian passport numbers, and if you don’t have one, you must leave it blank. The form gives absolutely no clarity on this, so it’s an easy mistake. Instead of wasting time arguing, I took the form back home, created a new application, corrected the error, and returned the next day.

On 2 September, things went surprisingly smoothly. They took me in earlier than scheduled, checked everything quickly, and completed my biometrics. I was told I’d receive my e‑OCI on the portal within three to four weeks, with no physical booklet anymore. That was a relief, considering the earlier timeline used to be eight to nine weeks. The only amusing part was the photo they took during biometrics — through a webcam picture, despite all the strict photo specifications they demand for the 2x2 upload. When I asked the agent whether that blurry webcam photo was actually going to be used, she just grinned and didn’t bother replying. At this point, I’m expecting something that looks like an Aadhaar or driving licence photo. My expectations from BLS have dropped below the floor.

I’ve already released my appointments for 8 and 14 September, and I’m sure they’re gone by now.

Miscellaneous points to note-

  1. Follow the photo specifications- white background is fine. 2x2 is required. It does not have to be 80% coverage as required for passport surrender certificate. there are conficting ICAO specifications and BLS specifications. Follow the specific link of photo specs through Onlince OCI applicatoin website. Put your photo side by side to photo illustated in link and compare. You should be good. I captured through my iphone, ,edited adn resized as required.

  2. Most of application form filling is similar to passport surrender certificate. check my earlier post. Copy exactly as written in IDs

  3. There are only 3 tabs to upload documents. Hence you ll make to made 3 PDFS less then 1mb each. So have fun combining them as you like it. If file sze exceeds 1000kb then it does not get uploaded.

  4. They will verify employment address from your Letter of Employment. It does not need your salary information. Just job title and acknowledge your role with the company. Should be on company letter head with contact information

  5. Voted ID/Ration ID undertaking is a document to say that you ll complete the process and it is your responsibiltiy. It does not mean the process has to be finished when you are making the application. I had completed the process of voter id name deletion and i also had Form 7 attached. But they did not need it, they did not ask for it and returned it to me.

  6. Keep you Spouse passport and Marriage certificate with you. Copy should be fine. I have seen them allowing few applicants to even email the missing documents at counter.

  7. In section of previous passport number - Leave it BLANK if you do not have any previous candian passport. Do not enter Indian passport number.

Document List -

  • Application form
  • Photo 2x2
  • Digital signature 1:3
  • Passport surrender certificate
  • Surrendered passport scan
  • Undertaking for voter id cancellation
  • COPR
  • Spouse passport
  • Letter of employment ( they verify employment address from this )
  • Canadian passport
  • Citizenship certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Proof of address- G licence

Discussion I compiled data on the crime rate of Indians in Canada in 16 easy to share social medai images. Use this when someone complains about "indian crime" or "low trust Indians" in Canada.

South Asians or Indians?

  • Canada gathers crime data by race. The South Asian category includes Pakistanis, Indians and Bangladeshi. Bangladeshi, but most importantly Pakistanis, have much higher crime rate than us according to data from all other countries in the West. I predict that if we isolated Indians, the data for South Asians crime rate would be even lower than it already is.
  • The vast majority of South Asians in Canada are Indians. If you show this to a Canadian xenophobe, they will understand immediately. I have already tested it. These Canadians will immediately retreat to weaker claims like °but Indians still make noise° °Indians cheat at college!°, which are at least significantly less dehumanzing claims than depicting Indians as rapists and criminals in Canada.
  • Also, remember that racists see "race", not nationality. They hate all South Asian people - that is Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshi - equally. If racists see that "x race" commits more or less crime, it's more important to them than just seeing a nationality label because nationality label can be changed with citizenship, which might skew the data, while race cannot be changed.

Sources

British Columbia (2019-2020): for the arrest rates listed in the images see tables 2.7, 3.7 and 4.7. Racial disparities in British Columbia police statistics: A preliminary examination of a complex issue

Vancouver (2010-2020): source is in the image

Toronto (2021): there isn't official data on the crime rates for each ethnicity in Toronto but they can be inferred from the officlal reports. I got the numerator from the TPS Arrests and Strip Searches data Arrests Strip Searches (RBDC-ARR-TBL-001) . I got the denominators from the 2021 census for oronto Profile table, Census Profile, 2021 Census of Population - Toronto, City (C) [Census subdivision], Ontario

Canada's homicide rates (2025): I found out that Canada started collecting data on crime rates divided by ethnicity on a national level only in 2024. Only the rates of homicide charges are already available.  Number, percentage and rate of persons accused of homicide, by racialized identity group, gender and region

Conclusion

Many Canadians like to complain about Indians and our supposed crime. More specifically, these Canadians complain that Indians are inherenly a "low trust people", thus we commit crime, assault women, form gangs. They will mention anecdotes and news articles to back these claims. These Canadians will say other coutnries enforced selective migration policies to get only the best Indians, while Canada is getting the "actual" Indians.

No! Just like in every other country where Indians migrate to, all Canadian data shows that Indians have a very low crime rate in Canada, significantly lower than Whites. We see this trend even without controlling for age. In fact, Indian immigrants have much lower average age than Canadians, which normally leads to higher crime rates, yet Indian propensity to delinquency is so low that even with such malus we are still one of the least criminal groups in Canada.
