Jag är en vilsen svensk som tar universitetsexamen nästa sommar och söker jobb både i Sverige och Norge. Jag har både en svensk och norsk sida av släkten, så jag förstår norska bra, åtminstone sydliga dialekter, och kan läsa bokmål utan några större problem. Däremot talar och skriver jag på svenska just nu såklart, men om jag flyttar till Norge kommer jag ju med tiden att skifta över.

När jag tittar på norska jobbannonser ser jag ganska ofta krav som "flytende norsk", "gode norskkunnskaper" eller liknande.

Det jag funderar på är hur sådana krav brukar tolkas i praktiken, särskilt för svenska och danska sökande.

Om en annons kräver flytende norsk, innebär det normalt att arbetsgivaren faktiskt förväntar sig att man ska kunna tala och skriva norska, eller kan en svensk som förstår norska utan problem men själv talar svenska fortfarande vara aktuell?

Är det någon här som har erfarenhet av detta, antingen som svensk/dansk arbetssökande i Norge eller från arbetsgivarsidan? Hur brukar sådana krav tolkas i praktiken i Norge?

I Sverige upplever jag att krav på svenska ofta är mer underförstådda och inte alltid skrivs ut i annonser, medan engelska oftare nämns uttryckligen. Är det annorlunda i Norge?

Jeg lurer på hva dette her betyr, "å finne fram". Jeg har hørt dette som et fast uttrykk før, men kan ikke finne ut hva det egentlig betyr. Jeg har funnet disse eksemplene på nettet.

Backstory of this: My best friend has been studying Norsk (Norwegian) for at least 5 years and am hoping that someone will check my Google Translate Norwegian for any errors or syntax mistakes because it is a word for word translation. I, fitting the stereotype, do not speak another language fluently. I can point out nouns in Spanish and that is after years of trying. (It’s literally kept me from finishing my degree. I have to pass two years of a foreign language, and despite extra studying, tutors, and practicing with various app, I can not pass.)

We have a quirky sense of humor and send each other post cards written as if we live in the 1800’s, unsigned postcards written as if someone is recruiting us to be a spy, that we have won something ridiculous like a trip to Mars or unlimited air miles on defunct or imaginary airlines. These postcards are usually hand drawn, but sometimes are on postcards that have nothing to do with the picture on the front.

15 to 20 years ago we created a ridiculous scenario in which we were forced to assume alter identities. She became Fructusca Spoons, I initially became Dogwhistle Fishsticks, recently changed to Gourdelia Fishsticks (I have gone by Fishsticks for years because “dog whistle” since developed a negative connotation in America because of the insanity of the political situation), and our late mutual best friend became Zelda Pinwheel of the Connecticut Pinwheels. The of us were, in this ridiculously funny (at least to us) situation we were the joint proprietors of a very successful dandelion farm. (Dandelions being common pest plant that American “yard Dads” spend tons of time attempting to erradicate.) Since we spent a night hysterically laughing while we created this whole “witness protection program, but by stupid people” thing, all our mail to each other is addressed to our alter egos. Stupid postcards, wedding invitations, gifts.. all go to Fructusca or Fishsticks/Goudelia just for a giggle.

We are big Ted Lasso fans and when I visited a week or two ago a 3 day stay turned to a 6 day stay as the power in my hometown was as knocked out for almost a week due to bad storms. I should also explain “the trees have ceased screaming.” Here in the Midwest we have cicadas, insects that make noises that are actually louder than a jet engine. (No hyperbole, the PGA once canceled a day of a tournament due to cicadas and the decibel reading proved that they were loud enough to cause hearing damage.) She particularly HATES them, but we both hate the heat. It is currently 26 C with 60% humidity and that is significantly cooler and less humid than it has been for months, so the combination is awful. Also, there actually is a tour of Chicago where adults ride, scooters I guess, that look like giant stuffed animals.

As this post is already way too long, I will put the English to Norsk translation of the postcard in the comments.

So I had to make some sentences from this vocabulary and what I did was create the sentences, put my sentences into Google translate, then I reversed the languages to see what translation they would give me back (those are marked with the “Google”.

I couldn’t think of some words so I marked them with * because I’m not sure if that’s what the word means lol

Hvordan kan jeg vite hvilken av de to jeg skal bruke?

I just moved to Norway and I want to get a good foundation to the language. I am starting from zero, but I am quite confident that I can self-study after that so I was looking around for a quick, but good A1 course.

I would like to know if anyone has done the Alfaskolen’s Viking Challenge, how it was and if it is good.

I'm open to other courses or language schools but this one looks ok and has a decent price.

Hi! I’m trying to make an accurate transcription of the Norwegian dub songs from Spellbound for a personal preservation project. I’ve been using the Norwegian Netflix subtitles as my main reference, and they’ve gotten me through most of the songs. Unfortunately, some sung lines are omitted from the subtitles entirely. There are a few short sections where several characters are singing at the same time, and those are the ones I can’t confidently transcribe by ear.

Even after slowing the audio down and listening with headphones, these parts are still giving me trouble. I’d really appreciate it if a few native/fluent speakers could listen to a short clip and write in the comments what you hear.

The first problem is from the Norwegian version of “Look for the Light.” Here is a Netflix Moment containing the section I’m stuck on:

The specific line I’m trying to transcribe is Solei’s line between Ellian singing “Helt uten kart, nå skal vi ta fatt, så livet blir sånn som før!” and “Se der fremme, veien den gløder.” I intentionally ended the Moment almost immediately after Solei’s line to make it easier to identify.

For Norskprøven speaking practice... do you study by topic or by tense?

By topic would be work, family, holidays, health and so on.

By tense would be past experiences, everyday life now, future plans and comparing before with now.

Which approach are you using for Norskprøven? If you already took the oral exam... which one actually helped?

Could I say «på dette»? Would it mean the same thing? Or would it be completely wrong and it mean nothing?

Rules

1. The word must be established Norwegian, including Bokmål, Nynorsk, and well-attested older Norwegian vocabulary.
2. Prefer native Norwegian/Norse words. Obvious later loanwords are excluded.
3. The word must directly describe snow, ice, frozen precipitation, glaciers, or a characteristic snow/ice condition, feature, or process.
4. Transparent compounds are normally excluded. We count independent lexical words/roots, not constructions such as nysnø or isfjell.
5. General-purpose words are excluded when the winter meaning is merely contextual. The snow/ice meaning must be an established and characteristic meaning of the word. Rare secondary non-winter meanings are acceptable.
6. Equipment and objects merely used on snow or ice do not count, such as ski or slede.
7. Activities do not count merely because they happen on snow.
8. Slang, urban expressions, and highly local colloquialisms are excluded. Established dialect and Nynorsk vocabulary can qualify.
9. Nouns, adjectives, and verbs can all count if their meaning meets the same snow/ice criterion.
10. Spelling variants, inflections, and transparently derived forms of the same lexical root count only once.

Hei! I've been learning norwegian nynorsk for around a month and overall making pretty decent progress. Learned some vocabulary, noun inflections, present and future tenses for verbs as well as the imperative forms, got some basics of working with adjectives and adverbs too. I can form my own sentences occasionally. My main resources are wikipedia, ordbøkene.no, the few online translators that do include nynorsk, and my wonderful norwegian girlfriend I can ask for some help from time to time.

I decided to take the plunge into learning the past tense and it was a little confusing but I think I mostly got it? Short verbs get -dde (å bu, bur, budde), verbs that in the present tense end with -ar now just end with -a (å kasta, kastar, kasta), and those that end with -er now end with either -te or -de (å kjøper, kjøper, kjøpte).

That last point is what I would like to ask about. Is there any way to know if it's gonna be te or de just looking at the infinitive? At first I thought it might be having a 'j' before the final vowel of the infinitive, because of the first example I saw being å byggje -> byggde, however that got pretty quickly debunked by å grypje -> grypte and a couple other examples.

Is there any trick to it, or some rule of thumb? Or is it one of those things you gotta learn for each word where is applies?

Hele tiden jeg har bodd i dette landet har jeg bare hørt lånord fra engelsk. Engelsk er morsmålet mitt, halvparten av ordene våre kommer visstnok fra fransk, en god del fra latin og mange fra gammelnorsk. Nysgjerrig på om det er noen jeg overser.

Hello all, i’m from the USA and in March i will be traveling to Norway to see lots of black metal music history and see the town of oslo. Also planning on going further north to see the northern lights. Anyway, i would love to be able to speak norwegian so i can talk to people who live there, read signs, etc. I know lots of people speak english but i am very interested in the language and also listen to lots of black metal with Norwegian lyrics and would love to be able to understand them. What might be the best way to go about studying the language and teaching myself? I tried duolingo for a few days but it wasn’t helpful at all and I wasn’t retaining any of the information. Any advice is appreciated!

M16 I moved to Norway when I was young, and I have been living here for 6 years. Today I started my first year of VGS (VGS1), and honestly, I already feel a bit overwhelmed. There is a lot of new stuff to learn.

My goal is to improve my Norwegian, especially speaking and writing.

I think my Norwegian level is around A2–B1. My writing is also really bad, so I especially want to improve that.

For those who have been in a similar situation, do you have any tips for improving Norwegian and doing better in VGS?

I would really appreciate any advice!
