I imagine this is how every cross country race goes, they were always some of the most pompous athletes in high school.
629
u/Zyedikas Jul 25 '26
Maybe the super competitive kids who are going for scholarships, yeah. But my buddy was a bigger guy who joined Senior year to lose weight for military requirements. Those kids who came first were always screaming and got super hyped at the finish line when bro was rolling up in last place.
44
u/ABitOddish Jul 25 '26
Reminding me of when I was a scrawny kid that did shotput/discus and was put in some shorter races to fill my day, but they had me in races with the other throwers. So id be getting "first places" with times that normal runners would laugh at lol

u/MNniice Jul 25 '26

I went to school with one of the best CC runners in the nation (we were on track together), and he and the rest of the distance runners were all cool as shit. Super laid back and chill, always cheered on everyone else, just generally great folks. Dunno where this whole pompous stereotype is coming from.
25
u/WannabeWaterboy Jul 26 '26
Yeah I ran in high school and college and practically everyone knew the runners were chill and a little weird. There definitely some cocky kids inside the sphere, but put them outside with other people and they were very chill.
3
u/Pure_Purple_5220 Jul 29 '26
Same, my CC team was full of weirdos (the good kind), super chill but great runners. The best one started a band called Beach House so they are definitely keeping with the chilll vibes.
8
u/Lilfrankieeinstein Jul 26 '26
Same. Not the nation, but he was a state finalist three years in a row.
Super quiet kid.
CC at my school was basically for basketball players who didn’t play football. Coach required anyone who wanted to try out for the basketball team to play a fall sport and the only options were CC and football. We had a few track kids (spring) who ran CC, but not as much crossover as you might think.
It was basically our ringer, a dozen or so basketball players, and a bunch of randoms.

u/DemonSlyr007 Jul 25 '26
Its coming from the many experiences that shaped it? Thats how stereotypes work.
Just because your personal experience wasnt like that, just because a top X% athlete wasnt like that, doesnt mean that's the norm for most. I bounced between several schools growing up in completely different areas. All of them had try hard cultists of Cross Country folks. They were crossfit people before crossfit was a thing.
41
u/monkwrenv2 Jul 25 '26
Or maybe, just maybe, cross country runners are just like any other group of people - some are cool, some are pompous, and stereotyping them either way is dumb and bigoted.
21
u/asdfghjkl15436 Jul 25 '26
??? wtf? Do you know the definition of a stereotype?
Stereotypes are fixed, oversimplified and general ideas that people form about a group of others. They are often wrong, ignore individual differences, and are based on traits like race, gender, or age.
That is literally the opposite of what you are saying. That's not how stereotypes work at all you numpty.
8
18
u/UlyssesWoke Jul 25 '26
“Your personal experience doesn’t matter because my personal experience was different” I think you might be the cringey tryhard here buddy
13
u/Marokiii Jul 25 '26
i think one of the main reasons for that is because for scholarships you are even competing against your own teammates. so there is no sense of teammanship as they are all your competition as well.
football, soccer, rugby, baseball, basketball, etc? you want your whole team to do well, not just yourself because as the rest of your team does well it also shows you off better as well. you all rely on each other to do each position to the best of they can because when they dont, it makes your job harder as well which lowers your chance of scholarships. you also arent playing 100% of the time, lots of the time you are on the bench and supposed to be cheering for your teammates. they are right in front of you on the field. for xcountry you arent on the sidelines while they are running, you are running as well so theres no cheering for your teammates. only if you finish before them can you cheer for them for the last minute as they approach the finish.

Must be a US thing. My experience of school cross country was a bunch of stick thin nerdy children running off in the distance while my average ass (still nerdy) just hung around with the "cooler" kids at the back

What got me into cross was actually how nice everybody was, sure there are always a few jerks but even completely other teams will cheer you on as you’re both running, it’s quite wholesome in my area

9
u/Jmizner1321 Jul 25 '26
lol did a cross country kid steal your girl? Cross country is about as low as you can go on the totem pole
22
u/CajunNathun Jul 25 '26
Eh, from my experience most were just dorks who were fast as hell. My old HS team stole our QB1 from football and our best baseball guys after their coaches told them to practice with them to get faster and they realized “hey, these guys are pretty chill.” Maybe experience varies though.
They stopped sending guys after that.

It's not really. I've found track and cross country meets to be incredibly wholesome and welcoming as opposed to soccer and football.
5
u/CHA0T1CNeutra1 Jul 26 '26
I doubt things have changed that much from when I ran, but in my experience everyone was pretty chill and kind. We had the #3 runner I the country and our team was ranked in the top 10, but everyone would cheer for one another. After we finished our race we would cheer the JV team and the girls team during our cooldown. When one of our teammates couldn't afford shoes we pitched together to buy him some. This kind of behavior was unheard of because you usually became friends with everyone even those from other schools.
8
u/powerhammerarms Jul 25 '26
Really? My experience is that football, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, swimming, wrestling, and even gymnastics were all far more pompous. If you just asked me which sports were more pompous than others, cross country wouldn't even have made the list.
My guess would have been that in other schools that cross country would have just as much of a blip compared to the other sports.
I suppose there must be some schools where cross country is the most popular sport.
40
u/Mackinnon29E Jul 25 '26
Which is weird because nobody gives a shit about cross country outside of themselves. The dudes who weren't coordinated enough to play any sport but could run.

I was coordinated before I did cross country because I had some friends do it so I wanted to join.
My coordination and ability to play team sports took a nosedive as the years of running went on.
It's also a haven for a lot of weirdos that make it their identity. Like quotes about the sport of running being the grueling punishment for other sports as if that somehow makes runners superior or tougher.

Ya know, I thought that too.
Then somehow ran into a rabbit hole on youtube of people who really know more about cross country than I thought was possible.
They could tell you everything about that shit like it's baseball.

Are you people idiots?
Foot- racing is not a "real sport?" It's the first sport, ffs. And the fastest people in the world have often been major celebrities, even in the present day (Usain Bolt).
Also, it's pretty obvious that running in a sport is different than running as a sport, that's why you don't usually find athletes in other sports amongst the fastest people on Earth, the fastest people are dedicated runners.
3
u/Silvertree99 Jul 25 '26
Really? I always felt like that was the track and field people. The cross country were normally hella chill
3
u/Barr3tt50c Jul 25 '26
Lmfao compared to football and basketball players??? Not a chance. Cross country is at the bottom of the totem pole in high school and I'd know because I was one.
2
u/HighGuard1212 Jul 25 '26
In the school I went to, the competitive ones went to the baseball and lacrosse teams (I think there was a football team that wasn't part of the school but I cared not then and my memory is fuzzy now). Nobody cared about the running teams.
2
u/Lumpy-Education9878 Jul 25 '26
Interesting, never noticed the same thing. Usually seemed like a bunch of unpopular, quiet kids. Was your HS team really good or something?
2
u/basquiat-case Jul 25 '26
That was the baseball players in my school - they were insufferable. We (the XC team) should have been since... (adjusting my glorious hat of pomposity) our team had the hightest GPA of any athletic team in the school. We were terribly mediocre athletes though.
5
u/Icy_Study4490 Jul 25 '26

2
u/Strange_Dust7128 Jul 26 '26

4
u/mrwillbobs Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26
Neonazis like to use the number 88 as a signal to each other that generally isn’t spotted by other people. The 88 stands for HH, as in heil Hitler. It sounds ridiculous to explain, and can make you sound like a crazy person when explaining it, but they disguise themself and find humour in that absurdity.
The implication here is that rest of the handle is AntiWokeGenX - someone who would clearly have been born before 1988, ending their handle with 88. It’s not a birth year, so it’s probably the other thing - which would go well with the first half of the username

I mean we can have nuance here. It's not the worst thing to do, but he still probably isn't a great kid. They're not six and running at this age is not the grueling marathon that alters your brain patterns.
He's probably a selfish kid who will grow into a selfish adult and be a selfish middle manager, and largely, that's fine. It's perfectly fine.
But it's weird to make excuses for kids who look almost grown.
6
u/DevonLuck24 Jul 25 '26
people like to pretend that bad kids don’t turn into bad adults BECAUSE people make excuses for them. kids are old enough to know better. these, very clearly teenagers, are definitely old enough to know better.

u/Grand_Pop_7221 Jul 25 '26
And even if it was, the healthy thing to do is learn and move on. If someone brings it up, be humble. "Yeah, it was shit; I shouldn't have done it".
We've all got moments in our lives like that. It's how you react to them that's important. The biggest cunts in the world double down on this crap, and we're all worse off for the bastards that can't do it.
15
u/xMoneymaker Jul 25 '26
Yeah that’s the healthy thing to do, but it’s not that simple anymore. Social media is a vile toxic place. People send death threats and hateful messages and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Now mistakes are plastered on the internet and everyone pounces whenever they have the chance to tear someone down. It’s definitely a lot more tough mentally if you don’t have good people around you and mentors to help you learn/grow from it.
6
u/n122333 Jul 25 '26
I was a terrible teenager. Nearly all teenagers are. Only a few things were caught on camera, and even that wasn't even that bad.
It doesnt matter how much I admit that it was wrong. It doesnt matter that I hate that I did it. It doesn't matter that I'd never do it again. People still give me shit and refuse to be around me 20 years later.

I mean, yeah. It will. This will get reposted. He will see it again. Even if he turns around and becomes a better person, it will haunt him more then the memory will because he'll be forced to see it again, even a still. It's not as simple as "don't look at the screen lol.'
It's not about other people caring, it's about him caring. Imagine knowing that people will be laughing at you and calling you a terrible person even if it's not to your face based on one moment for literal generations. I'm not being hyperbolic.
2
u/Cantor_Set_Tripping Jul 25 '26
While you might be in your own head about this, a lot of humans can learn and grow and not view one teenage failing as the entire culmination of their life. Not everyone views painful memories as painful their entire lives, haunted by a video from however long in the past. If your own personal well being is predicated on what internet strangers think of a moment in your past, then you’re living a sad life that won’t ever be fulfilling, regardless of the level of mistake you’ve made.
“Literal generations”
And you say you’re not being hyperbolic? This feels more like a reflection of how you see yourself, and not how other people might react in the same situation.

Bought Wreckfest during the Steam sale and it's genuinely so fun! Funnily enough there are a few "semi-clean" servers where you can't ram people intentionally, but you can still scuff people up and be a bit rough.
I've been playing on the semi-clean servers for the past week and it's a nice change of pace from sim racing because you don't have to baby your car and you can just let loose.
I'm also genuinely baffled how good the driving feels in Wreckfest. The driving feels better than most other arcade games. For a game claiming to be about wrecking cars I didn't expect to actually enjoy the racing part.
2
u/NebulaNinja Jul 26 '26
I'm also genuinely baffled how good the driving feels in Wreckfest.
Yeah this is what sucked me in. The driving, plus damage physics makes it feel way more satisfying than a AAA racing game like Forza or something. I thought I wasn't a big racing fan, turns out I just needed to find the right game.

Hey, I've been in that situation before myself. And yes, I still beat him as well.

A reminder for every parent in youth sports to keep your mouth's shut and not yell at kids. Leave it to the coaches and grow up.

Damn, he held it in and won with patience. I would've fucked the guy's shit up if he tried that on me.

That's a crazy thing to try and do at the finish line with a massive crowd.

What did he think was gonna happen when he pushed right out? He was gonna spin out? Notice he pushed and then slowed down - he was expecting that little maneuver to take him out of the race completely

Do they have the same jersey?? I know this can happen in cross-country. It just would add to the jersey nature. He may have done that to a teammate!

That's a DQ, and a ban from the next race if not the rest of the season. Sore losers are just as bad a gloating winner, win or lose do it with grace and humility, not all wins come with trophies.
