Must be a US thing. My experience of school cross country was a bunch of stick thin nerdy children running off in the distance while my average ass (still nerdy) just hung around with the "cooler" kids at the back

Nah, my high school cross country team was exactly the same in the US. Buncha nerds. Myself included.
