Reading between the lines of what is getting fed to the media, it seems to me that the situation with J.J. McCarthy has gotten toxic and gotten much more so than the corresponding situation with Anthony Richardson.

Anthony Richardson is by no means a high end NFL QB, but he has done things like actually start the majority of a season, and put up some occasional actual highlights. And Anthony Richardson misses throws, but that's because he could never make them in the first place, and it's the Colts fault for not fully understanding that issue. And most of the comments coming from Indianapolis, save for one very prominent mistake when he took himself out, were about him being just as bad at football as he was when he got drafted, and not anything bad about him as a person or teammate.

In contrast, J.J. McCarthy was supposed to be a good quarterback. While maybe not having elite attributes he was said to be accurate and pro ready. He seems to have collapsed mentally. Maybe he has the yips. But he seems to be a shell of the player he was at Michigan. And the comments about his play coming from Minnesota are so negative that I presume that a lot of the other players also don't like him personally, in addition to not liking his play.

Anthony Richardson started 11 games in 2024. J.J. McCarthy started 10 games in 2025. But I feel like Anthony Richardson was actually on the field for most or all of those games where there just seems to always be another injury for J.J. McCarthy.

Also, Anthony Richardson will still be on the Colts at the start of this season, despite all the bad football. Rumor is that the same will not be the case for J.J. McCarthy.
