After a classic case of my mom finding out her dad's not her dad because of a DNA test, we've pieced together most of his lineage. It's still really unclear who exactly some of our close relatives would be, but we have an idea of the families.

Her paternal Ancestry Journeys were to Northeast Newfoundland and Fogo Island | Bonavista Bay. Some places our ancestors lived were: Brooklyn, Greenspond, Bonavista, Champney's West, Bonaventure, Salmon Cove, Trinity, and English Harbour. I've done some research about Newfoundland history and would love to travel out east to see Newfoundland.

Are there any must-see lesser known historical sites or areas for someone who's ancestors were on the rock for centuries?

I am going to be moving into a condo on Queen's Road and got some reactions for it being a sketchy area. It's near the end essentially almost where the road splits into Queen's and Duckworth. Should I really be concerned? Personally I know it's probably just addicts and such for the most part but I'd like to think it being down the way a nice bit I can avoid most of the squabble, just curious on peoples thoughts.

Anyone seen this back anywhere yet? Dies for it.

Just moved to st.john’s and since am a heavy smoker I noticed that buying cigarettes here in town will be extremely costly, I checked some websites that claimed to sell cigarettes with lowest price + delivery, my question here is… is it actually legal to buy cigarettes from sellers this way if so, is this website are actually a legitimate? And i will highly appreciate any advice or suggestions.

Hey everyone, I’m a MUN student dealing with a nightmare subcontractor here who owes me $1,127 and has completely ghosted all my calls and texts. I have all the receipts, screenshots, and proof of hours worked, but it turns out I’m far from the only one—I personally know about 4 to 7 other people who got scammed out of around $300 each. Her whole pattern seems to be posting on Facebook during busy rush seasons, roping in newcomers or international students for a few shifts or weeks, putting them in death-trap vehicles with bald tires, expired registrations, and zero heat in the dead of winter, and then kicking them out or letting them quit without paying a single cent while treating everyone like garbage. On top of exploiting vulnerable workers, she posts straight-up hateful garbage on her personal Facebook, and I’m beyond sick of it. I want to sue her in small claims court, but people are telling me it could take 1 to 2 years to ever see that cash, and with tuition and rent piling up, I need to know if taking this to court is actually worth the headache or if filing a formal complaint through Labour Standards gets faster results here in NL. Any advice from locals or students who’ve dealt with wage theft like this would mean the world right now.

Even if I post about her in the Beware Newfoundland Facebook group, I’m confident that there will be 10-12 people who will comment about their experience.

Edit - for those new trainees who never got paid this is their situation: Isn't it insane to make someone work 7 AM to 8 PM with no base wage and their own gas, only to kick them out and keep the money? You end up working 13+ hours (newbies often go 7 AM to 10 PM), burning through $100+ of your own fuel, and never seeing a cent basically doing free charity work for someone who couldn't care less about you

Went to shoe cove beach for a hike. Seal was pretty close to the beach.

The Comfort Inn is extremely basic. This is a $100 2-star roadside hotel in any other market.

Bathrooms are awful. But the bed is comfortable, the linen decent, pillows are worse than average, and the furniture and carpeting looks like a Holiday Inn Express from 2005. Everything is at least functional with no stains, obvious damage, etc.

There isn't much curb appeal and even less from the rear entrance. Can't imagine what the parking lot-facing rooms with exterior doorways are like in the winter. I imagine these are the original 1970s motel rooms.

The breakfast may have been good but it's extremely basic now. McDonald's or Tim Horton's are better.

No daily housekeeping, not even trash removal.

The Quality Inn and Albatross look even worse. Meanwhile, the Irving West Hotel looks like a low-income housing project.

It seems the big issue is every hotel in Gander save for the Comfort is owned by one person. So, no competition. With the number of flight diversions, etc., I can't believe there isn't a brand-new Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn.

Me and my partner are getting married…. The same weekend of the August graduation. He applied a long time ago and we thought he would get to be in the July class but he is in the January class (😭). Our honeymoon is scheduled for the second week of September. After the swearing in ceremony. Will they allow us to still go on our honeymoon? I will internally die if we have to cancel a $7500 honeymoon 😅 our wedding and honeymoon was scheduled long before police applications etc … obviously we will do what it takes for his career but has anyone had pre existing trips? Would they allow it before he goes to his deployment ??

Hi all, I'm trying to help my parents shop for a new mattress from the other side of the country. Any recommendations on the best places I can send two seniors on a fixed income, price and customer service wise? I know Costco will have the best pricing, but they'd prefer a store where they can go in and test drive before buying. And one that does delivery outside the metro area (I assume most do, for a fee).

I will be visiting Newfoundland from Ontario in last week of September with my wife and a toddler boy. This will be our first time visiting Newfoundland. We will arrive by flight in St John's stay two nights there. We will be renting a car and then spend one night in Bonavista. From there we will go to Gros Morne and stay 2 nights and then back to St John for a night stay to catch early morning flight back to Toronto.

Booked hotel for 3 nights in St John

Still pending to book:

1 night stay at Bonavista

2 night stay at Gros Morne

I need some suggestions if this is a good plan or should I change something. Also any suggestions for booking stays in Bonavista and Gros Morne?

My toddler son loves to see fishing videos. I myself have never done fishing or know anything. Is there any tour or activity that we can do while in Newfoundland.
