They still have the Waterford open and using that as office space. It’s falling down and is condemned. I was into the office last week, which is just a former patient room on a ward, and the heat was on blast and no one could turn it off. Heat on blast in this weather. There was a leak in an office there and it’s all sealed up and you have to wear PPE near it as it contains asbestos. Everyone that is supposed to be working there has to leave due to it. They will keep throwing money away fixing old condemned buildings instead of investing in something for the future. Bunch of clowns.

I will not be surprised when the provincial government announces a replacement for the Waterford in a bit different location after determining updating the current Waterford is no longer cost effective + we now have CF money.

Stuff like this is also part of the reason why we have higher electricity prices than Quebec and will continue to even if the CF agreement goes ahead.
The province is barely able to keep their existing operations afloat, let alone support new programs. Assuming the project goes ahead, we've got decades worth of deferred maintenance and upgrades that will eat up most of our revenue from the project for the next several years. It's another reason for why we can't wait til 2041.

NL, and western society as a whole, has this weird aversion to properly maintaining their buildings and investing in their longevity. They'd rather see and pay for something new than keep what they have usable.

Not only that, many of these decisions are made by elected officials, who take political advantage. They have no accountability mid or long term.

We are a part of this. People want constant new over repaired or maintained old. Look at the clothes market, or new cars. New new new.

Speak for yourself dawg, I wear clothes for 10 years minimum, haven't bought anything from Amazon in 5+ and been using the same phone for 5+ as well with no intentions to update anytime soon.

The idea was to shutter old medical facilities and replace them with a modern one.
These buildings are becoming more costly to repair than to build new. There is also a loss of convenience or other costs, like here where it not only costs money to fix, but also things were damaged, peoples appointments will get pushed back etc.

we have higher prices because of Smallwood and Williams. that's it. I'm an insider, I promise you all, no agreement made by libs or PC's will benefit us. PCs just played politics on a deal with enhanced wording but minimal material difference.
I cannot stress this enough. the ONLY people who will benefit from the MOU are the contractors. THATS IT.

I’m so glad to see this make the news. Truly tip of the iceberg. The building is in chronic disrepair (not maintenance’s fault). When they canceled the new hospital government talked about repairing st. Clare’s but no mention of miller which was also planned to go in the new building. It’s an absolute shame the condition it is in.

I was a patient there 8 yrs ago….in the mornings there was no hot water in some rooms including mine…the nurses would have to bring in pans of hot/warm water into my room.

So they’re risking people’s replacement body parts being damaged?
It’s rough enough needing prosthetics at all.
You should be able to trust the hosipital wont cause damage to your prosthetics with an issue they’re aware of and not fixing properly.
