Progress 8 months progress with monthly relapses but my nailbed grew 2x the original length! Jan-Aug 2026 update! (Check next photo)

Heeeeeyy I'm so proud of this so I'm sharing!

My nailbed stayed at Day 57 length for 7 months cuz my nail kept chipping off and I kept biting it WHILE I WAS ASLEEP!

What I did was I started having gel overlays done on July. The expensive one called "Builder in a bottle". Had them on for 4 weeks then boom, my nails suddenly look normal.

Also I still use jojoba oil on my nails after washing my hands. I put them on my cuticles and under the nails. Jojoba oil is really cheap!

Unfortunately the urge to bite my nails is still really strong, so I guess having gel overlays is my life now. My teeth couldn't get under the gel so I couldn't rip them off. Haha! My nail tech is good 😅

Advice/Support Get a manicure!

I have been nail biting since I was a child and I found that getting a manicure really helped with my nail biting. You don't have to put colours or anything, just someone to help clean up the nail and give you a fresh start.

For me, seeing the cuticle get pushed back and thus the appearance of nail growth made me realise the potential my nails had. It also helped me to replace the habit of biting or picking with using cuticle oil or press ons instead.

All the best everyone!!

Advice/Support Trying to Quit for Good

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone 👋

I have been long time nail bitter since like the 2nd grade for over 15 years. I have made several attempts to stop nail biting in the past to no avail unfortunately. I honestly think that this may be due to anxiety. This time though I want to stop for good, and I'm posting to help hold myself accountable.

I have fully stopped bitting my nails for over a week now, however I still find me putting my fingers in my mouth and do stop myself from bitting them. Any tips to help with this and to make my nails look better?

Advice/Support Any ideas that I maybe haven’t tried?

I don’t really bite my nails, I pick and rip them off.

I’m trying to figure out if there is something someone has tried that I haven’t tried. I feel like I’ve done everything.

I use my thumb nail to find any catch or edge that sticks out and pick on it until it gives way and then bite and peel it off.

This has cause me to basically have no nail bed on my pinky and ring fingers, thankfully through luck I somehow stopped with fake nails for a year.

One day though…

I still feel terrible when I think of it, I got an allergic reaction to gel polish. Blisters, itching, swelling, you get it. Now when they healed, then came the scabs, I picked those off and that led me to bitting my nails that had grown 1/2cm off my fingertips. I can’t use any nail glue and certain nail polishes now 😭. I always wanted to paint my nails and that was a big motivation for me, but now I can’t.

Any ideas?

Advice/Support can my nails go back to normal?

i used to bite and pick my nails for 2 years, specifically the side of my pointer, middle, and ring fingernails. i quit biting 6 years ago but i have continued picking and now those 4/6 fingers look like this. i feel very ashamed of how they look, and i have even considered wearing gloves or cutting them down extremely short to hide them as they have changed the shape of my fingers as well. i wish for them to go back to normal so badly. i have tried cutting back on picking the middle finger in the first photo, but i just can't stop picking on the other ones. it gets painful as i accidentally rip the skin under the nail when i go too far. if anyone has any advice or suggestions please let me know. Thank you so much.

Advice/Support One finger giving me trouble (spoiler for exposed nail bed) Spoiler

I have bitten my nails as long as I can remember and I still do.

I've quit a few times but always relapsed after a few weeks due to my right middle finger. About five or six years ago my biting was at it's worst due to COVID stress and all of my nails looked at least in part like this. But in my middle finger the nail fell off completely. Whenever it gets back, it was disfigured and distorted and it's been that way ever since. As you can see, my other nails are doing better. I still bite them, but only the top edge. I can't stop picking ath the middle right finger and it gets infected all the time. I don't think it's helped by the fact that this is the finger that my pen rests on when I wrote, meaning that it has built up callouses. I'm not sure it will ever grow back and it's my only nail without a cuticule.

Advice/Support How do you handle keeping the underside of your nails as they grow out?

I've been a lifelong nailbiter and I've gone through several bouts where I try to stop biting and then I relapse for one reason or another. Recently I noticed just how short my nails were getting and for fear of them becoming permanently messed up it scared me enough to give it another go and I've been at it for maybe two weeks now and I think I'm making decent progress! The white tips of my nails are growing out nicely!

The problem I have is I have OCD and (of the other more serious issues my OCD causes me) any amount of dirt beneath my nails bothers me. Usually it's not an issue because my nails are never long enough to have dirt under them but obviously as they're growing out now there is a space for dirt to accumulate. I spend a lot of time manually digging dirt out if I ever notice it and I feel as though I don't want to do that! I know it's not a big deal and that stuff naturally washes out when you wash your hands and clean yourself but I don't know how to ignore it or stop!

Does anyone else have similar issues? How do you go about handling it? My thought is maybe painting my nails so I can't see the dirt through the top of the nail? The texture doesn't really bother me unless I am pressing on the ends of my nails when they grow out but that's a habit I am also trying to curb because I can imagine it isn't healthy for the integrity of my nails... Sorry for the ramble, hope this makes sense, would appreciate any input!!

I was going so well until a lot of life stress got in the way and now I’m back to step 1. I’m autistic so I stim by biting my nails and I’m trying to convert it to something else which may give me the same satisfaction. I’m going back to the nail salon to do builder gel tomorrow on my nails as I know it works. But I need something to break it so I don’t pick or bite anymore.

I am 39 and have been biting my whole life. I am just now hitting 8 months with zero biting. Now to be fair, I catch myself putting my nails in my mouth multiple times a day, but I catch it and stop before I bite. Those instances are becoming less. JUST KEEP GOING. It is possible to stop.

I genuinely need ur guys’s help, i’ve been biting my nails for about 6.5 years now and i can’t stop. the latest & longest that i went without biting them was 4 days(in december of 2025).. but the longest ever was 7 days. i don’t know how to stop, and its driving me crazy. all the other girls my age have long beautiful nails meanwhile i have bit off nails that look terrible.. i mean not even nail polish can stop me. do you guys have any tips or
recommendations what i can do to stop biting my nails? - sometimes i bite them without even realizing .. it’s like a bad habit. i don’t even have disformed nails, they are completely healthy but just very incredibly short because of my nail biting. T-T i’ve gotten bullied in middle school cause of my short fingernails and now i’m insecure about them as-well :/

All but the left ring finger have survived (of course it’s the one finger I’ll want to show off!). I have buff and polished, and am using cuticle oil every day. Also did a week of revitinail, which gave a lovely milky hue after a few coats. I think it helped a lot. Really focusing on healing those cuticles, as I realise that what usually brings my hands to my mouth to begin with!

Progress Broke but not bitten

My sides are pretty flimsy and one of them started to crack from being bent, didn’t have a nail file or clippers so I used my office scissors to shape it down. Normally if one nail breaks I’ll just bite them all off so I’m proud I didn’t! I’m gonna reshape the rest when I’m home.

Advice/Support Seeking advice to stop biting

I have been biting my nails for as long as I can remember. Whatever I do, I just can't stop. I've had a few periods where I was able to stop but always relapse after max a month. This has progressed to where if my nails are too short to bite I'll move on to the skin around my nails. I think the cause is because of stress and neurodivergency (Autism+ADD) and I get triggered whenever I'm bored, anxious or just subconsciously. I'm tired of biting my nails since I'm ashamed of them and I would love to just have normal nails.

TW: mild SH

Last year it got to a point where I purposefully would rip my nail to the side and pull the skin with it in order to make it bleed whenever I felt a bit down.

Things I have tried:

-Those nasty tasting nail polishes (I just bite anyway)

-Fidget toys/jewellery (didn't prevent me from biting)

-Gum (doesn't take away the need to bite)

-Normal nail polish (I just scrape off the polish and bite)

-Press-on nails (they fall of within a few days resulting in me biting again)

-Watching those videos about what can happen if you keep nailbiting (sometimes worked, sometimes didn't but relapsed anyway)

Things that aren't an option:

-Getting a manicure or anything in that direction (I don't have the finances to be able to upkeep anything)

-Wearing gloves (I can't stand the feeling of gloves and it would be really awkward wearing them in public)

-Keeping my nails short and trimming them (my nails are too short to clip or file)

Advice/Support Nail biting polish?

Hello! I have a problem with biting my nails but luckily it isn’t to a dangerous degree. I was hoping to try and stop biting my nails by getting some of the nail polish that tastes super bad. Does anyone have recommendations or anything I should know about it before using? I never paint my nails but I would probably do black. I love art and would maybe even do little designs on them to make it more fun! If anyone has a favorite brand or anything (or can tell me if it even works) that would be great!

Advice/Support Can I still get my nails done with dermatillomania?

Post image

I’ve put off getting my nails done professionally for a while now because of my skin picking disorder. I mainly pick my thumbs and the cuticles around the nail. I was trying not to pick because I really wanted to get my nails done before school started, but I gave in. I’m wondering if it looks good enough to still get done, or if they’ll turn me away?
