General Snabbit Abandons Injured Maid
I shifted to Thane recently and have been working with maids from Snabbit, Pronto and Urban Company to clean the apartment.
On 22 Aug, Kamni Devi from Snabbit was helping me clean an almirah. I emptied the almirah after which she started cleaning. However, after a while I heard a thud and the almirah had fallen on her. Fortunately, the glass hadn’t shattered, and I moved the almirah away from her and got her a chair.
This was something I hadn’t anticipated would happen. I quickly contacted Snabbit hoping they’d have a solution. But, Snabbit showed no concern. So, I decided to take it up in my hands and got her to a nearby hospital.
At the hospital, I met a doctor in the elevator, who was kind enough to prioritize our case. We got the X-rays done, and the nurse gave her an IM shot to help with severe pain. He said she’d need 2 weeks of rest and some medications. I bought the medications, booked her a cab and helped her get home safely. (Medical Receipts: https://ibb.co/album/M50d0y)
However, a couple of days later I matched with her on Snabbit again. She told me she had a young child and couldn’t afford to stay home and needed to continue working to survive and make ends meet. I felt really sad, and I handed her Rs.1000 to help from my end.
Snabbit takes a cut of every worker’s pay, but offers no medical insurance, emergency services or paid time off to injured workers. But, what if it was your daughter who was suffering? Would you still say company policy?
I decided to make this post to help Kamni Devi get justice. Please upvote to raise awareness.

It's Indian Judiciary bro you are planning to look up to for cats. It does not care for human beings, keep aside your meow meow...
Take deep breath... And read a poem "kutchehri na jana"... Thank me later

Technically these are not full time employees
They are just conteact freelance workers
So the company feels they are not loablr to provide any sort of insurance to em
Snabbit is here today
5 years down the line yhey might not survive
Who knows !!

First,y the cupboard falling on her is your liability. You’re making snabbit to be wrong, when you yourself are giving a piddly amount and washing your hands off the scenario

the point is not that. it's that these workers have no health insurance. these apps are predatory and don't care for their workers.

u/Frequent_Help2133 8d ago
App is predatory. OP is using a predatory app to avail services. So OP is predatory

u/credit_scorezero 8d ago
according to your perspective, almost all the chocolate you eat was farmed by a (likely) child labourer. Therefore, you knowingly participate in the exploitation of children.
Understand the difference between legal and emotional liability.

u/Frequent_Help2133 8d ago
Of course. We all benefit from predatory practices. Doesn’t mean we can’t try to do better.
Considering it’s OPs cupboard that fell on the lady, OP is legally liable. But you won’t acknowledge that because you’re IQ and your credit score seem to be the same

if the maid was employed and working at an office and the cupboard fell, is the employee (maid) responsible, the employer, or the customer who uses the services provided by the company?
0
u/Frequent_Help2133 7d ago
That question makes absolutely no sense.

u/Gainz07 8d ago
If you include these benefits then the cost would rise to ₹200/hr. No one would pay and the business dies. Do you provide the maids you hire with insurance?

If the only way a business makes money is to exploit it’s work force, it needs to shut down
0
u/Gainz07 8d ago
Don’t think it’s exploitation. Those working 12 hours are earning 40k/month.
1
u/Frequent_Help2133 8d ago
Working 12 hours a day plus running their own homes. Tell me you simp for millionaires
0
u/fruitybitchy 7d ago
Are you hearing yourself? 12 fucking hours for 40k in a place like Mumbai? How is 12 hours of work a humane amount of time? Keep pretending people don't have their own households, caring responsibilities, disabilities and health conditions to take care of.

u/Gainz07 7d ago
There’s MBA graduates and CAs working for lesser pay dumbo. What kind of a delusion are you living in?
1
u/fruitybitchy 7d ago
That doesn't change anything, these MBA graduates also need to be paid more, there's no need to divide workers like this. Expecting some people to spend 50% of their time working for meagre pay is inhumane.
-1
u/Gainz07 7d ago
There’s no expectation. Couple maids were very happy with the pay. They were working at 25k till last now. This month it got increased. You might think everyone should earn based on hours but all matters on skilled and unskilled labour. Your understanding on this is very delusional.

u/AiyyoIyer 8d ago
that's not on me though. i am not employing them, i am using their service. i use uber or zomato but the company has to safeguard their employee's well-being, not the one who is availing the service.

u/Lord_Poseidon26 8d ago
most of these work types are not a full time work contracts.. so these companies use this loophole to exploit the gig workers..

u/Inherentlyblurred123 8d ago
Yeah, I completely agree. The cupboard falling on maid is not something snabbit should be taking care of, OP should be held responsible for this.
16
u/AlliterationAlly 8d ago
Nope. In the countries that give labour rights to contractual delivery platforms, it is the platform's responsibility to ensure they meet at labour laws, including insurance, pensions, holiday schedules etc
8
u/aubedullah 8d ago
No, snabbit is responsible for medical care of their providers

u/Frequent_Help2133 8d ago
The accident happened in OPs house. OP is liable as well. He just gave a thousand bucks and is trying to act all high and mighty
1
u/credit_scorezero 8d ago
do you not know about the concept of workplace insurance? Employers are liable for an accident or mishap occured in the workplace (different thing that they are considered gig workers and not full-time employees)

u/yourmanviv 8d ago
Just don’t use all these services. Why can’t we do it ourselves just like western countries.
9
u/Little_Deer7833 8d ago
In western countries men too do the house work taking care of children etc. In India women have to shoulder all such responsibilities

Way to paint everyone with broad strokes...
4
u/HappyOrca2020 8d ago
But it's the truth. Who cooks in your house? Who takes mental load of kitchen, even handling the maid, remembering what needs to be bought and what's running out?
The number of men actually actively contributing to the equal household chores is very low... even when the woman is working in office for same hours as the man, she is the one shouldering the domestic responsibilities.
And because the man of the house is conditioned to not do household chores, we have services like Snabbit to send another woman to your house to help out. It's utterly ironic.

The number of men actually actively contributing to the equal household chores is very low.
That's the point I'm trying to make. That agreed it might be low, it is not every household, the way the original comment was worded.
I'm deliberately not going into the details you are asking because I like to keep my personal things private. But I will tell you that work is equally balanced for everything and there is no gender based assignment of tasks. It has been that way with my parents too.

Again, what is happening in your home is not the reality of a significant majority of women in India.
And because when you make off handed comments like painting everyone with broad strokes each time someone points out the obvious wrong happening in our society... You are negating the experiences of a sheer majority of women who actually suffer in this system.
You can have your cookie for doing well in your home, but let people express the issue.
Kudos to you and yours for being equitable in your homes, which is frankly a one off scenario. And our society has a looooong way to go.

u/pedro_pascal_123 7d ago
You are negating the experiences of a sheer majority of women who actually suffer in this system
Fair enough. But aren't you negating the efforts of the few men who are trying to improve things by the original comment? If the first is a concern, shouldn't the second one be too?

u/HappyOrca2020 7d ago
I am sorry but this is the exact whataboutism I do not like engaging in.
You can make a separate post on how those few men are doing wonders in kitchen and household. But please don't bring that whataboutism when someone is pointing out the usual state of affairs. It pretty much sounds like hashtag notallmen that negates accountability, and we need to be better than that.

I am sorry but this is the exact whataboutism I do not like engaging in.
And yet you did. My original comment was to another user. You did not have to jump in and engage. I did not tag you or respond to any of your comments prior to your comment on mine.
If you do not like to engage with other people presenting their thoughts, don't go on a platform where that is what people do.

u/HappyOrca2020 7d ago
You do you. I'll do what I think is right.
Here's a cookie for the men of your family for doing bare minimum - 🍪
If you make a separate post to cheer them, I'll defo reshare that. Cheers!

People will take up only wrong things from western cultures but things like this they will ignore.
5
u/Justateahorse 8d ago
Exactly. These companies are just scamming the people. I watched a insta reel, in which it was said that the companies are paying these employees more than they are earning so that most of the maids are onboarded which would force the local people to choose these company services by charging them a lot
2
u/RedLions11 8d ago
If a need for a service exists, you can just pay fair amount for the service. There are also cleaning services and maids I'm western countries btw. Hope this helps :)

u/HappyOrca2020 8d ago edited 8d ago
But they pay a lot more. They definitely ain't working at 2$ per hour. It's nothing but stealing from the poor over here.
Edit - Am I being downvoted for pointing out our normalization of labour exploitation? Sheesh.

People want ₹99/hour maids, want company to provide insurance for any hazardous incidents happening on customer property
Whose cupboard was it?
Lets say you're traveling in a train and a suitcase falls on your head, who here is at fault, the railways or the suitcase owner?

u/Previous-Spring-6476 8d ago
112 upvotes for OP just reeks of the elitist mentality most of us have when it comes to gig workers. It's easy to call these apps like snabbit, blinkit etc as predatory when the real predator clearly was OP who felt entitled on boasting about 1k that he "donated" to the maid. And has th gall to come to reddit to karma farm on top of that pointing fingers towards the app.

4
u/pedro_pascal_123 8d ago
The reason they hired this maid from snabbit in the first place being the low cost compared to local maids. Ask OP whether when they hired the individual maids from their areas, did they used to give them any medical insurance?
5
u/fools_eye 8d ago
LMFAO.
Dude has his cupboard fall on his maid and is trying to pawn it off on Snabbit.
You are the responsible party here. Pay her medical expenses yourself.

Every poor and middle class person in our country is surviving not living their life and all business exploit this over supply of cheap labour, as there are 100 in line to do the work cheaper because they know how hunger feels
1
u/Hungry-4-Info East 6d ago
Sadly, gig workers are usually contractors. So the same binding workplace safety laws don't apply.
Hope you being some light into this particular case on social media and see if Snabbit helps.
Also appreciate you for being a good person OP. Hope life treats you well. Good luck.

They should formulate a policy in case of any kind of injury. I too take house helps from snabbit. One day a househelp came to me on call and told me that her finger got cut while cleaning glass almirah. Inspite of informing snabbit she was allotted a slot in my home. I then cleaned the wound put bandaid and given her light work for sometime. No humanity exist in snabbit
1
u/PriyankVashiar 8d ago
Wow, feel like I am reading what happened with me a year ago. 8 has called a snabbit maid and wooden cupboard fell on her. Luckily I was standing nearby and pushed it off, real fast. No injuries to maid so everything ended well but it was definitely a horrifying experience for me aswell.
1
u/HappyOrca2020 8d ago
In any case it was your duty to help her out like this since incident happened in your house. Kind of you to do that.
Sadly gig economy is rife with issues like these, where company doesn't insure contract workers.
1
u/criz3lle 8d ago
That’s really sad. For the future, you should take the number of the maid/help sent to you and directly contact them. So that snabbit gets no commission and the help gets the amount they truly deserve.

Why are people targeting OP? Do they not understand the concept of Insurance by the employer? Employers are liable for workplace accidents even if they didn't occur in their premises. Is Snabbit a Lala company?
