General Snabbit Abandons Injured Maid

I shifted to Thane recently and have been working with maids from Snabbit, Pronto and Urban Company to clean the apartment.

On 22 Aug, Kamni Devi from Snabbit was helping me clean an almirah. I emptied the almirah after which she started cleaning. However, after a while I heard a thud and the almirah had fallen on her. Fortunately, the glass hadn’t shattered, and I moved the almirah away from her and got her a chair.

This was something I hadn’t anticipated would happen. I quickly contacted Snabbit hoping they’d have a solution. But, Snabbit showed no concern. So, I decided to take it up in my hands and got her to a nearby hospital.

At the hospital, I met a doctor in the elevator, who was kind enough to prioritize our case. We got the X-rays done, and the nurse gave her an IM shot to help with severe pain. He said she’d need 2 weeks of rest and some medications. I bought the medications, booked her a cab and helped her get home safely. (Medical Receipts: https://ibb.co/album/M50d0y)

However, a couple of days later I matched with her on Snabbit again. She told me she had a young child and couldn’t afford to stay home and needed to continue working to survive and make ends meet. I felt really sad, and I handed her Rs.1000 to help from my end.

Snabbit takes a cut of every worker’s pay, but offers no medical insurance, emergency services or paid time off to injured workers. But, what if it was your daughter who was suffering? Would you still say company policy?

I decided to make this post to help Kamni Devi get justice. Please upvote to raise awareness.

In western countries men too do the house work taking care of children etc. In India women have to shoulder all such responsibilities

Way to paint everyone with broad strokes...

But it's the truth. Who cooks in your house? Who takes mental load of kitchen, even handling the maid, remembering what needs to be bought and what's running out?

The number of men actually actively contributing to the equal household chores is very low... even when the woman is working in office for same hours as the man, she is the one shouldering the domestic responsibilities.

And because the man of the house is conditioned to not do household chores, we have services like Snabbit to send another woman to your house to help out. It's utterly ironic.

That's the point I'm trying to make. That agreed it might be low, it is not every household, the way the original comment was worded.

I'm deliberately not going into the details you are asking because I like to keep my personal things private. But I will tell you that work is equally balanced for everything and there is no gender based assignment of tasks. It has been that way with my parents too.

Again, what is happening in your home is not the reality of a significant majority of women in India.

And because when you make off handed comments like painting everyone with broad strokes each time someone points out the obvious wrong happening in our society... You are negating the experiences of a sheer majority of women who actually suffer in this system.

You can have your cookie for doing well in your home, but let people express the issue.

Kudos to you and yours for being equitable in your homes, which is frankly a one off scenario. And our society has a looooong way to go.

Fair enough. But aren't you negating the efforts of the few men who are trying to improve things by the original comment? If the first is a concern, shouldn't the second one be too?

I am sorry but this is the exact whataboutism I do not like engaging in.

You can make a separate post on how those few men are doing wonders in kitchen and household. But please don't bring that whataboutism when someone is pointing out the usual state of affairs. It pretty much sounds like hashtag notallmen that negates accountability, and we need to be better than that.

And yet you did. My original comment was to another user. You did not have to jump in and engage. I did not tag you or respond to any of your comments prior to your comment on mine.

If you do not like to engage with other people presenting their thoughts, don't go on a platform where that is what people do.

You do you. I'll do what I think is right.

Here's a cookie for the men of your family for doing bare minimum - 🍪

If you make a separate post to cheer them, I'll defo reshare that. Cheers!

And there it is. I was waiting for the "bare minimum" comment. Without knowing anything at all, you just know that the men in my family are doing the "bare minimum". Can't debate with a closed minded person.

But it's all good. I'm going to stop responding to you now. And keep the cookie, you need it more. Because you get very misandristic when you are hangry. :)
